Yeah there are alot of WRXs in all the classes they compete in. It's probably the single most popular car in autocross across the country right now. It's hard to find an unmodded one too. They usually go into SM because of boost control changes. There are a couple of them that are competitive. I expect the Conebasher car to do fairly well this year, it's going to go through some changes and will have more power than before. The guy who drove the 2nd place ESP EVO at nationals drove SPD Tuning's SM car and did pretty well in it. That car has a Kaaz gearset w/Kaaz LSDs, I can't remember what turbo it's running though. Has a rebuilt engine that runs 8.5:1 compression ratio if my memory serves me correctly. It's a fairly well prepped car, but it's still running a 2L motor.

It will always be a battle between light nimble cars with moderate HP versus heavier cars with lots of HP. The E36 M3 right now just happens to be the best balance of both, and the suspension and tuning possibilities for that car are infinite. Not to mention the best tuner (Bimmerhaus) is run by an autocross guy. I haven't really seen SM get that much faster over the last couple years. Tunnell alone is responsible for the huge increase in PAX this year. I think the participation is down because people are scared off. I hope that doesn't continue. I think Jason Tipple was going to join SM in his Civic but bought a 240sx w/SR20 DET swap instead. I think he plans on racing that in SM this year as well as doing the SCCA drift competitions. There are alot of Sciroccos running in SM, whereas they used to go into FSP. Taka Aono, who has been the best in FSP by quite a bit recently, would have done well in SM with his AE86. However, he still would have been well behind Bob Tunnell.

I hadn't heard about Tipple buying a 240... I run SM in OVR so he's around a lot. He's a good driver, but IIRC I've seen him in a couple rear drive cars and he wasn't nearly as quick as he is in a little CSP/STS hatch. My WRX is marginally illegal for SM because of some of the weight I've taken out of it, but I run a roll bar which adds at least as much of the (illegal) weight I've taken out of the car. I also run A032R H-compound which isn't exaclty competitive. I use the car at Mid Ohio which I like a lot better than autocross. My main competition this year was a guy in a 3.2 liter M3 prepped by Kline. I think IIRC I won 2 events out of about 7 I ran. And he won 5 or 6 with a couple wins being events I wasn't at. I'll probably go back and forth between the WRX and S this year. If Tipple bitches about my car then I'll just run it in Prepared or run the S2000. I just like running in SM because we're always close.

Actually I got my STS civic guys mixed up. Chris Shenefield was the one buying the 240.

It's fun to talk about being competetive at the national level, but I have no such pipe dream. I'm simply building my car to fit my needs and in it's current state SM is where it falls-plain and simple. Will it be a fast car that I can take to the track, rallyx or autox in- yes. Will it be a car that is competetive locally- that is my hope. Do I have any expectations that I will be national competetive w/ it- notta.
I certainly do appreciate the talent, dedication and innovativeness that it takes to compete nationally and to all that do- my hat is off to you:)

I guess I'll get DEQ'd in Atlanta for no roof rails... go figure. But I am not putting them back on, so. I don't even know what class that puts me into (?).

SubieGal has to keep the roof racks on her Rally car ... corporate imagery I guess ... even though I believe some countries ... Canada ? ... offer the wagon without roof racks.
Just like the WRC Suby cars keep their non-functioning huge hood scoops on ... (although I believe [some] early WRC Impreza's used the hood scoop for their engine air intake?)
No roof rack ... sounds like that sizable advantage should put you in SM ..

I am already running in SM. The only car that I know of other than the TS wagon in Canada w/o roof rails is the 2001 STi wagon- hence why mine are gone. I'll run in whatever class it puts me in, I am not buying more rails to put on.
