Carbon Part interest? (V limited lip!)

OK, I have a friend that fixes boats, and he is a carbon fiber guru... I have asked him if he could make carbon car parts for people. He said it wouldn't be that hard if he had a piece to make a mold from, and if someone where to organize the whole thing as he always had people that wanted one of soemthing which is too much of a pain. He said if I could organize at least 5 if not 10 or more of a part he would do it... So Let me know what people would want...
I'm thinking the V limited lip would work though!
So basically this post is to gauge interest as to what people would want made from carbon. Post what you want, and also what you would be willing to pay, and or what you think is should cost in carbon.

If you can make an exact copy of the V-Limited lip (read: good fit and functional, like the real one) in carbon, I will buy one.
I think it's safe to say that we won't pay $500, like the real one. I guess start throwing numbers out that are below that, until we can all come to an agreement. I have a feeling that this would be a popular item on here.

im game! im actually in the process of decieding if i want to push the "buy" button for a v-limited rite now, i may hold off, if this becomes live instead of vaporware...
the sti version 1 lip in cf was $200 less then the real sti version, should we expect the same in terms of price for a v-limited in cf?
this should be a well profound project because it actually will work and it is very sublte yet aggressive demeanor is outstanding!

Not sure if this will work then... I was talking with my CF guy and he was hesitant about goving me a quote without seeing the part. I'm going to bring him some pictures of a v limited today to see what he thinks. I doubt it will be a lot cheaper than regular though as it's a $500 part right now, and it's a big piece so making it out of carbon plus his labor plus the materials, plus buying a real V limited for a mold will all add up a bit. It does seem like there is interest at this point to at least get some more realistic calculations on the cost/price. I'll see what I can do for today, and let everyone know when I know more. This is the major busy season for his boat building business (including 12 days until he is to have mine done) so this will take at least a month for the first one even if we said we want 10 today, so don't get too excited or hold your breath yet. If we can all agree on a price it will happen though.

Which is crap, because these threads have to start somewhere. If someone wants to see if there is interest in a product he should be able to post a thread. If he starts asking for money that is a different story. People want a CF V-limited front lip. If any of the mods closes this down, there would be no way to organize it, and that sucks for everybody.

This doesn't resemble a group buy, there is no company or vendor to speak of. It's a guy who wants to make something and wants to know if anyone else would want it while he was making it. You guys are way too anal retentive sometimes, I think a lot of you would do well in the military.

Yeah, as for the group buy aspect, if this works out, and my CF guy thinks he can do it and we work out a number that everyone can agree to, THEN I will repost a new thread in the Vendor section (after becomming a vendor) with X product at Y price, bt as said, I am gauging interest for the part first, and also trying to get a feel for what the market might bear in terms of price in order to know if the products can be made under these parameters... Only once all thse details are sorted out can we be sure that I should bother withh all the other details in selling them, never mind making them...

Well, like I said it 'resembles' a group buy. I never said it was one or that this thread would be locked. Only one person really mentioned that Subie Gal might not look at it as a GB. I see it just as something that gauges interest since there is no list of names or payments being requested. So I think you need to watch saying 'you guys' and quoting me as I just answered his question. If you look up some you will see I already posted stating I had interest in this as well.

FYI boys 'n girls, you can get the "real deal" for around $450 from a couple of importers. I should be VERY surprised if it can be made domestically for less. I won't bore you with the reasons this is so....... perhaps the real issue is availability. The STi one is hard to come by and folks often have to wait months if they don't tag one when the importers' periodic orders come in. Availability IS worth something.

being made in the US doesnt make a difference, sorry ben, your a cool cat, i just dont agree with that though.... japanese fbg is top notch to begin with, a lot of cf available is usaully real as well, it usaully consist of a cf sheet embosed on top of a usual fbg mold. i really do want to see this become of fruition, and i do see this being a popular item just like the cf sti ver 1 lip avalable for the pre-gda\b\c cars, lets hope the price wont be soo much, esp since it is just a lip.... its not as big as a chargespeed full bumper or a burn-up wrc bumper...
i supose time will tell, i'll defintely back this up, cause i am deeply interested if the price is right, if it exceeds the actual sti version then im afraid to say i'd rather have the real deal....

Yes it does, but I wasn't refering to quality... (which is high both ways) but to labor rates...
Time will tell. I showed him the pictures last night and he was interested. Now he just needs to see the piece... I might be ordering one from somewhere now so he can see it in person. If he can do it we will do at least one (for me and to see what it will cost) and then play it by ear after that.
Does ANYONE in RI (or close by) have this lip so my guy can see one in person to see if this is possible? If not I will have to take one for the team and buy the part myself...

add me to the list please with 2 details:
a) must be under $250.00
b) must be all CF. if not, then an underlayer of FG is ok as long as the price reflects the materials discount.
what kind of timeframe can we expect from conception to completion? btw - thanks for managing this.

For timeframe, I'm thinking a month or so due to the fact it is THE SEASON for boat stuff, so he is overbooked with stuff to do (including for me), but once he gets slow and needs work, he is really looking forward to this as a project. He did say, if he had nothing else on his plate that it will only take a day or 2 from receiving the donor piece to making the first one, and then after that they will be relatively simple... Oh, and no problem doing this... I enjoy making (and helping in this case) things, especially out of glass or CF. You should se what we are turning my boat into one season at a time. He just added a new CF beam to my boat that weights about a pound (maybe) and stiffened up the deck by like 400%... Uses to fles with 100 pounds on it and now a 220 pound gorilla (Me) can jump up and down on it...

if you order from japanparts.. the final cost was +575. So.. I just got mine from Myles. They're damn sheshy. The front exterior part wouldn't be too hard to mold, but its the underneath part thats pretty complex. If you fudge the underneath part it'll really suck because that's how it mounts to the bumper. My STi piece fit picture perfect. ~15 minutes to install.
Don
p.s. Good luck with this. if the CF version does ever come out, I'd probably pick it up.
p.p.s. how are you gonna get a shiny uber-cool sti sticker?

Well, I think the original is way over-priced. Also, the total material cost for a duplicate part in carbon would be $20, maybe. So basically you're paying for time, labor, and whatever other material he ends up using to create the mold (note that the mold is often more expensive material-wise than the final piece).
Still, I think something in the $300-$400 range with OEM quality is a good deal. Hopeully he will be vacuum sealing and possibly autoclaving the pieces.

supposedly a CF authentic V-limited front lip is ~1200. That's just a number I've heard floating out there. The original is expensive, but its also a genuine STi part, with supposedly some wind-tunnel R&D. Fit and finish was absolutely perfect. I was hesitant when buying it, but now that its all said and done, I'm 100% happy. It puts a nice subtle touch on the car.

No doubt it's a GREAT piece - I love the look mine gives, and especially on a java black. BUT with my pink springs I've scraped this thing more times than I care to remember, and while the plastic has "bounced" back amazingly well I'd be TERRIFIED to spend $4-500 on a CF piece that wouldn't be as pliable.
Now.....having said all that it'd be a really, really nice addition in CF if it were executed well. I have a CF wing en route and that would balance out the look really nicely. I will keep an eye on the thread. :)

im game! im actually in the process of decieding if i want to push the "buy" button for a v-limited rite now, i may hold off, if this becomes live instead of vaporware...
the sti version 1 lip in cf was $200 less then the real sti version, should we expect the same in terms of price for a v-limited in cf?
this should be a well profound project because it actually will work and it is very sublte yet aggressive demeanor is outstanding!
A CF V1 lip from Gruppe-S is around $300 bucks shipped to your door...
How about smaller one off CF parts? Id take some CF interior bits...

Like I said up top... enough interest and he will make anything. He can also make just one but it will be very expensive (or half as expensive if I want one too ;) )
Well, I think the original is way over-priced.
That is exactally the problem. We have to buy one that is overpriced to make sure that it is the same in CF. We also have to make a mold, that will not be cheap to make. These things all have to ammortized (sp?) over the cost of several of these pieces. This is why I'm trying to see what people will be willing to pay to see if it is worth it, and also to see if we can afford to make it for that price. I'm pretty sure there is more than $20 of carbon in this thing, and then there is resin too, and on top of those there is the labor that you mentioned. FYI these will be Vacuum bagged for sure, and maybe autoclaved. His shop is in the back yard of hall spars who is making a new VERY LONG autoclave for masts for LARGE sailboats, so maybe we can sneak them in there, but it will have a bit of a mini clave anyways as he likes to heat the room while things cure, but not as well and an autoclave... Anyway the mold, and original piece cost as well as materials and labor all have to be factored in here, and then the fact that he and are need to be paid for our time. (my payment will probably just be the parts for my car).

FYI - Japanparts.com has the real V-Limited lip for $367 US, which is a killer deal. For that kind of money I just might get the real one, but I'd honestly rather have it in CF.

Wrong, follow the shipping and insurance costs to the end and it costs over $600 to get it.

If wistful bought his months ago when they were brand new the price was higher and it was $549 shipped now they go for $509 shipped from Racecomp Engineering.

i am going to order a lip and get the ball rolling on this. the company that will be doing the carbon work does dry carbon body panels for audi and porsche race cars, as well as ferrari and other big race teams. i think its going to take probably about 2 months to make. Carbon costs a lot more than 20 in materials. i have worked with it before. our company will get the ball rolling on this asap.

No it does not. See here. Of course it depends on the quality and weight, but it wouldn't take a whole yard to make one lip. I'm not sure where you got your materials from, but you got ripped off.
Now dry carbon, that's a whoel 'nuther ball of wax. I haven't priced it out before, but being that it comes pre-preg and you have to keep it refrigerated before use, i'm sure it's not terribly cheap. ;)
If these guys can produce a viable dry carbon part, it should be very nice.

a lip spoiler would take more than 1 yard, if you use more than 1 layer of carbon and use no fiberglass backing and make the entire thing out of carbon. once the lip comes in they are going to look at it and decide wether or not to do a honeycomb structure or how they want to approach it.

i ordered the lip yest from myles and it will be here june 15th so then we'll get the ball rolling on this. carbon v limited will exist!

CF bling?? You will see teh hotness when I mount my neon lights along the bottom of my CF lip you posuer :disco: (j/k)
I really don't think the CF on that lip is too much bling. But since it will just be a CF overwrap (that is correct isn't it, a FG piece with a CF top layer?) I can see where some would complain it isn't realy CF so don't pretend. I think I will have to photochop a silver version to match my STi and see what I think of the lip painted.
