Clearing 04 headlights part 1

fast03WRX 06-22-2003 09:20 PM

Clearing 04 headlights
Is there any way to clear the 04 headlights on your own??
I know that you can buy the JDM ones for like $600, but its there any DIY kinda mod?
thankz
LYHTSPD 06-22-2003 11:05 PM

I am going to take one of mine out this week (if I get a chance) and see if I can get the amber reflectors out. I will take pics and what-not if I get a chance.
fast03WRX 06-23-2003 11:46 AM

cool, make sure you post those pics:)
the headlights jus look ugly with all that orange.
Focus4 06-23-2003 01:33 PM

you're going to have to heat up the housing w/ either a heat gun or by putting them in the oven. Probably be easier to put them in the oven and then pry the housing apart. Then take out reflectors, put back in housing to melt glue again, put back together, and for added saftey put silicone around the edging so the headlights won't fog up. This is a good free mod...
LYHTSPD 06-23-2003 07:13 PM

I am not sure that will be necessary for the 04s. It looks like they have several small screws that hold the lens to the headlamp assembly, and a small gasket to keep the elements out.
fast03WRX 06-24-2003 12:51 PM

so heating them and trying to take it apart might not work?
I wanna get some JDM clears, but the only ones out are friggin $600:mad:

He's saying they might just have lock tabs to get them apart so you won't have to heat them to unseal it like you do on the previous models. I'll check mine out tonight as i wanna do this as well.
Scoobie Newbie 06-24-2003 04:47 PM

I'd be very interested to know if the 04 lights just unscrew. That would be a great piece of mind vs putting them in the oven.

i really hope this is true, that would be great if you didn't have to heat em... a couple of screws could be all that is keeping me from orangeness!

I'm going to do it tomorrow night for sure. I would be doing it now but for some reason my 10mm socket has gone and disappeared. I'm heading to the store tomorrow at lunch to pick one up.

Just from visually inspecting it, it definitely looks like it'll just screw apart. There are a number of horizontal screws on the top of the light that appear to be holding it together.

It also appears that the orange lenses are held in by just a few push tabs... looks easy to remove.

I looked through the service manual and there's no description of taking the lights apart, just taking the whole assembly out and changing the bulbs. So i guess we'll have to find out the hard way...
Scoobie Newbie 06-25-2003 01:24 AM

Your efforts (and possible pics) will be greatly appreciated.

Can you guys tell me how to remove the headlamp assembly from the car? I got the two 10mm bolts off... and it almost seems like it wants to come out. What else is holding it in?
Brahmzy 06-25-2003 06:44 PM

Just read your owners manual.

I'm doing this right now-I'll post in a bit.

You need to pop the grille off. There's 4 tabs that you press down to release right on top of the grille, then two on each side that you stick a screwdriver down through the little cut out to release. Then you'll see there is a white piece of plastic also with a 10mm bolt holding it down.

I'm going to take pics of the whole process tonight or tomorrow if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Awaiting Brahmzy's report. =]

LYHTSPD 06-25-2003 10:54 PM

Well, I did it!!! I did not get a lot of pictrues because the process is exactly like the headlight mod for the 02-03 cars. The only difference is the number of screws you have to take out before you bake it.

I like the cleaned out look a lot! I do have a pic or two of the finished product, but my buddy took the digi cam home with him. I will get them from him tomorrow.

Anyone know where to get the sliver coated bulbs? I would like to keep the amber turn signals...

Nice, you beat me too it. I wasn't prepared for the silicon sealent, so i'm gonna do it later. I've got a ton of shots of how to get it all apart though, so once i do i'll do a nice write up. Maybe tomorrow night if i get ancy.

So the bulbs underneath the orange reflectors are amber?

The headlightless WRX:

LYHTSPD 06-25-2003 11:21 PM

All the bulbs are clear. I want to keep the amber turn signals, but dont want the amber color in the headlight (i just spent 2 hours getting the amber out!!)
skivvie 06-25-2003 11:26 PM

I hear ya. Cool. Thanks for being the geinea (sp?) pig. I'm gonna do mine tomorrow i guess... i just gotta beat the dark after i get off of work, no garage dammit!
LYHTSPD 06-25-2003 11:59 PM

Yeah, I do not have a garage either. It took me about 2.5 hours to get them out, prep, bake, seperate, clear out, re-bake, put back together and get them back in the car... It really does help to have a friend to hold the lights as you pry them apart after baking.
Scoobie Newbie 06-26-2003 12:07 AM

I'm sad to hear that you have to bake them still.
Brahmzy 06-26-2003 01:05 AM

Man you guys are fast. I just went to see a movie with a buddy, tore out a headlight, only to find what you guys did. This sucks. I don't have time tonite to finish these. Gonna have to wait 'til the weekend.

For those with experience 'clearing' the '02/'03s, do your light get any condensation?

And what's the baking procedure? I've got 3M clear bra on mine-will it melt it off?

Good work fellas.

Good work fellas.
You might want to use the hair dryer method to soften the sealant mentioned on Scoobymods.com description of clearing the lights. Might take a little longer, but you wouldn't have to worry as much about the 3M clear bra.
LYHTSPD 06-26-2003 07:55 AM

I used the baking time and temps on scoobymods. 225 degree F for 22 minutes. Since this is such a low temp, I am not sure if it would effect the 3M film or not.

Scoobie Newbie: Baking them is really not that bad once you do one. There is no discoloration or warping. After I baked my first one, I was looking at the chromed plastic in the housing and noticed that it looked a little splotchy. I thought I had ruined them until I went out to put it back on the car and compared the old with the new. It turns out that the chrome parts in the untouched light are the same way! Looks pretty cheesy if you take a good up close look at it. I am already thinking about painting some of the chromed plastic to match the body color.

Have fun guys and gals! Make sure you take a picture of the headlight in the oven. Man that looks weird! My wife came home right as I was putting the second one in the oven and she about freaked! Her exact words: "You are putting the new headlight, taken from our brand new car, that cost about 26 thousand dollars, into the oven because you dont like the color of the reflectors??!! I dont even want to see this happening!!"

I was laughing so hard I nearly burnt myself on the oven!
speedbuggy67 06-26-2003 09:54 AM

I did a set yesterday on an 04 wrx i have been doing a bunch of local guys 02-03 wrx's so nowi did the 04. Yeah its more involved than the 02-03 but no prob the come out with two top screws and one on the while plastic then unclip the harness. they have to be heated in oven, i lucked out it was 95deg and engine was hot so they came apart without oven. don't drip sweat in lenses though hehe, and i popped in in. I also did it on a 04 black rex as seen above. Awesome change and cheaper than the JDM's. Pm me if you want more info.

fast03WRX 06-26-2003 03:14 PM

nice job guys. One question though, where do u get those bulbs that appear clear but blink orange?
Kooldino 06-26-2003 04:42 PM

We want pics!
metoo 06-26-2003 06:18 PM

You can go to an auto parts store. They carry LED clusters that fit in the factory locations.

Or you can do what I did. I bought orange bulbs and lightly spray painted them silver. The bulb is silver when unpowered and a nice bright orange when on power. Sounds ghetto, but looks good and works great.

Philips also makes a bulb that has a more shiny silver look and illuminates orange. I think they are called Silvertones

Are you married to my wife???

That exact reaction is why I probably won't do my lamps...

Oh yeah, congrats and pix pls!!!

excellent! cant wait to see the pics of the finished product. I'm thinking about somehow tinting the chromoe just a tad bit too so they look a little grayer. I'm just afraid it might not bas as easy as I think. congrats guys. you might have just saved me $600!!!

I hope this works...this would be the first time I've done this. Hopefully no red Xs.

Lemme know if they're showin' up-sorry 'bout the crappy pics.

It looks a lot better in person and I chose to leave the park light orange bulb cover in. You can also take that out as well. As long as you get the 2 main ungly amber plates out of there.
Brahmzy 06-28-2003 12:48 PM

I'm probably gonna use an amber bulb for the blinker just like the WRC car I took pictures of yesterday. In the front on pic it looks very orange only because the camera flash is lighting up that whole portion of the reflector.
Gee wiz my car looks stock-I need to do something about that. I've got some nice 17s-Flik Artics on the way. And I hope to order some Prodrive springs soon.
fast03WRX 06-29-2003 12:57 AM

*bumpp, i would leave this thread alone, but there's no page 2 of this forum:confused:
Jay04WRX 06-29-2003 01:35 AM

Can someone please post detailed instructions on how to remove the orange fromt he 04 headlights. I have seen that a few people have done it and I would like to also instead of spending $600 on the JDM's. I am also going to buy the STI Hid kit and install that the same time as the headlight mod.

If anyone wants to actually spend the $600 and or pick up the STI Hid kit check out this link

Brahmzy 06-29-2003 02:47 PM

Bro, it's real easy. I don't really know if any instructions have been typed up yet.

1 Pull headlight(s) as per owners manual's instructions.

2 Take out all screws on the back lip or edge of headlight housing -EVERY ONE don't miss any-2 of 'em like to hide.

3 Place headlight in oven on 200 degrees for 10 minutes (I would think 20 mins is too long).

4 Remove headlight from oven and pry open the clear lens from the black headlight housing. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING INSIDE THE HEADLIGHT. Don't think, 'I'll just wash it off'-just don't touch the chrome or the inside of the lens(you don't have to)

5 Unscrew chrome trim from the clear lens (1 screw)

6 Remove orange plates from chrome trim with small jewelers flatblade screwdriver.

7 If you're gonna paint the trim ring, do that now.

8 Screw the trim ring back into the clear lens remember DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING INSIDE!

9 If you want to remove the orange parking light bulb cover too, pry that out of the headlight housing now (easy)

10 To ensure a proper reseal of the headlight, I bought a roll of 3M "strip caulk". It's the 1/4"-3/8" thick black sticky windshield caulk. Same stuff Subaru use for these headlights and windshields. The autoparts store should have some. Put a thinnish strip all the way around in the 'trough' of the headlight housing where the lens will 'sink' into.

11 Reinstall the lens into the headlight housing. This part is difficult. Be sure to get all of the locking tabs secured along the bottom edge of the headlight. I actually used pliers to squeeze certain areas of the two parts together. When you're satisfied things look lined up and together as possible without screwing the thing back together, place headlight in oven at 200 degrees for 15 minutes.

12 Remove headlight and squeeze headlight together some more and screw the two halves back together, watching the screws 'suck' the clear lens over the headlight housing.

13 Do one headlight at a time so you can see how the original unit looked before you started screwin' with it.

14 Install headlight back into car, or if desired replace bulb(s) while the headlight is easily accessable.

15 Repeat for other headlight.

I hope this helps homies.
skivvie 06-29-2003 07:07 PM

I'm doing it right now. I'll put up a complete how to with pictures and arrows and goodness when i get them back in the car..

Brahmzy's got it right. If he doesn't mind i might snag a few of his steps. =]

fast03WRX 06-30-2003 12:25 AM

Bahmzy i gotta question, after puttting the cleared lights back together and applying silicone around it, why put it back in the oven?? Doesn't that just melt the silicone more?

wrx junkie 03-17-2008 11:13 PM

im scared to put my heaflights in the oven = (
dougkmcse 03-18-2008 07:09 AM

When you go to put them back together. After clearing and or painting you reassemble the unit put the screws back in not really tight. Place it back in the oven. let it heat up again to make the black seallant pliable again. Then tighten the screws back up. I just kept retorquing them. The whole purpose of putting the headlight in the oven is to heat the sealant up so you can work with it. You can use silicone to seal the unit only after it is been heated and put together.
wrx junkie just follow the directions as stated earlier in the post. On my 04 I let it sit 15-20 min. at 200 degrees. You do not want to use high heat and you do not want to put the unit near the heating element. If you decide to do this you will be glad you did.... Good luck
