Pikeadon 04-17-2002 11:09 PM

Cypress doesn't start till Friday.

Even money Tommi stuffs it into a big rock, and that Petter gets so many punctures he's not even in contention... Either that or they demolish the entire field :)

Makinen
Burns
Solberg

Sainz

I hate to say it, but I'm getting the feeling Burns is going to be tough to beat this year. He is really taking to the Pug and he has been on or near the Podium at each race so far.

Just noticed SpeedChannel has a half hour of SCCA ProRally - SnoDrift - scheduled after the RallyXS show tonight 4/18 - no doubt with Mr. "I will be on EVERY SpeedChannel show!!" Ralph Sheheen...........sheeeesh!!!!!

anyway, cheers!

I have to go with jaybird, burnsy is just good on the dirt, and gotta keep Sainz in the top six, the guys to consistant.

I just hope Tommi doesn't go too fast.
Shik 04-18-2002 07:52 PM

As was mentioned before in another thread, this is Prodrive's first rally with the New Age STi Group N Impreza piloted by Toshi Arai, so good luck to him and the new car as well. An end to Lancer domination on WRC Group N rallies?

Tommi
Petter
McRae
Sainz
Burns
Gronholm
chmoorewrx 04-18-2002 08:52 PM

I'm looking for total Suby domination! Though Burns vs. Gronholm should be quite interesting. I hate to say it, but those guys are gonna be awfully hard to beat to the championship!
grimlock 04-19-2002 10:12 AM

Does anybody know what happened to Toshi's GrpN car on stage 1? That's a disappointment.

toerag 04-19-2002 10:19 AM

After stage 4 makikinen is 6th and solberg is about 3 minutes behind the pace due to read diff problems. He did however post fastest time on stage 4. McRae leads.

I too am very hopeful for a Subaru sweep, but I am VERY worried about the tires.

brainrally 04-19-2002 11:06 AM

I bet Provera is feeling happy.

1. Ford
2. PEUGEOT
3. Ford
4. Ford
5. Subaru

The Pugs are making a good showing, at least Gronholm is. Burns and Rovenpera are in the top ten. They're even ahead of Petter. Yes, Petter should eventually pull ahead of them, but consider why he fell behind in the first place. Mechanical failures. The Pugs aren't having nearly as bad a time of it. Their main concern was that the Pugs would be tough enough to withstand the rough rallies. Looks like the only thing that will slow them down now is driver error or tire problems.

Unfortunately for Mitsu this rally is proving really hard on their cars. Alister has suffered a broken driveshaft three times in one day. One of the other Mitsu's also suffered a broken driveshaft.

I want Subaru to win, but I don't wish ill on any of the competitors. I hope Tommi can get his rear suspension sorted for the next leg, and that Tommi and Petter suffer no mechanical problems or tire problems.
dwx 04-19-2002 11:07 AM

Solberg has been one of the fastest drivers, except that one stage, so he's back in 18th almost 4 minutes out. I think he can work his way back into the top 10. Makinen 5th, I don't think he's in a horrible position. What the heck did Ford do to the Focus?

I'm not surprised at all that McRae is leading but the other two Ford guys have done exceptionally well.

Ryouga 04-19-2002 12:49 PM

Stories like this make me think maybe this McRae guy isn't insufferable after all (from Autosport):

"Petter Solberg is another driver to struggle, a throttle problem on SS3 costing him four minutes. He was in tears as he arrived at service but McRae took his old team-mate aside and calmed him down sufficiently for Solberg to set fastest time on SS4."

He just has issues w/ a certain Brit driver.... :D
brainrally 04-19-2002 03:15 PM

The only Subaru retirement is Toshi Arai. Don't know the details, though.
shrieden 04-19-2002 05:26 PM

Arai apparently had fuel pump problems......

Kilika2k 04-20-2002 03:29 AM

Tommi is making a charge on SS9! Him and Petter are one two for that stage and Tommi is now 3rd with 26.4 seconds behind Colin McRae (He started the stage 47 seconds back).

Not even half of the rally is done and I think Tommi can push all the way to the win if he and the car keeps up with the pace.
pio!pio! 04-20-2002 06:39 AM

Man, Petter is consistently placing near the top of every stage and winning several stages! He is my new rally hero! :)

I'm watching Stage 11 rite now, Gronholm, McRae, and Sainz haven't finished the stage yet, but how the hell can Petter be 20 seconds ahead of the next closest guy?!?! Unless timing control messed up! 21 seconds ahead of Burns, 22 seconds ahead of Makinen.

I guess he has nothing to lose, but that is come crazy time!

-- edit --
Gronholm came in 25 seconds slower than Petter. Something must not be right. I mean, that differential is just too great

Maybe since Petter was first on the stage, some calamity made the stage more treacherous AFTER he went through?
pio!pio! 04-20-2002 07:41 AM

SS12,

Petter is still setting incredible times.

He chopped almost a minute of time from the leaders.
If he can chop another minute he would catch up to Tommi in third place!

And it might be possible since they are rerunning the stages that were run on SS11 and 12 which are the stages that Petter is dominating! GO PETTER GO

Check out the split times on wrc.com, excellent for seeing where drivers gain and lose time
dwx 04-20-2002 09:17 AM

I think Makinen is a bit too far back at this point to really make a charge at McRae. He needs to push though to try and hold off Burns. Too bad they cancelled SS14 but I guess the conditions were too bad to run.
Idjiit 04-20-2002 10:09 AM

Sounds like Petter could have won this one if it weren't for the throttle cable, what a total bummer.

Good on McRae for showing support for his old teammate!

You rule Petter!!

10. 30 STOHL-PETRASKO Ford Focus A8 3h14'46"000 + 05'55"50

Makinen is going to need to hold off Burns for third. I have no doubt that Solberg will overtake Eriksson and Martin if he doesn't run into any more problems.
Kilika2k 04-20-2002 01:47 PM

The reason why Petter has a huge gap ahead of the next driver is that he's the first one to run the stage and for SS9, it was completely dry when Petter was running. After his run, it started to rain! Slowing all the times for drivers behind him! And I would like to say that the rain seems to help Subaru a lot.
grimlock 04-20-2002 04:35 PM
"That last stage was so slippery. I think it was the worst stage I've driven in my life. It was like driving on ice with slick tyres. In fact it was so muddy it didn't really matter which tyres you had on the car. I lost count of the amount of times I nearly spun. I really couldn't believe it when I saw the time we got. We caught the rain just like everyone else. It was pouring down as I was on the start line. Already today has been a big step compared to yesterday. The car is working really well. "
Petter said himself that, at least on 12, the stage was wet for him too, and that he couldn't believe the time he set. 35 seconds ahead of the next car. The boy can, simply, drive.

Ross N.
brainrally 04-20-2002 06:03 PM

Man, I bet the Peugeot team is on the edge of their seats:

1. Ford
2. Pug
3. Sube
4. Pug
5. Pug
6. Ford
7. Skoda
8. Sube

The Pugs are just doing marvelous. Holding up much better than last year. And not performing poorly either. If this trend continues, not only will Puegeot take the Maker's title, but one of their drivers (Marcus) will take the Driver's title as well.

But Petter is doing just what he said at the end of Friday: "I'm just going to focus on getting more fastest stages..." (maybe not an exact quote, but essentially what he said). If he keeps this up (and his car holds together) he'll accumulate more stage wins than Panizzi. I can see him finishing in the top 6. He could very well take 5th, though I think that's a bit more of a stretch.

Well, now I have give due respect to Peugeot. It's too bad they don't produce a street version of the 206 WRC. I mean with AWD and turbo power (ala Impreza WRX). At least I don't know that they do.
Cigar2 04-20-2002 07:34 PM

Yep, I just saw some of the footage on Speed News. It look's like Mud, Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud!! For today's stages.
Shik 04-20-2002 09:49 PM

Tommi on his slipping times:

"At about 20kms in(stage 10 I think) we hit something with the right hand rear wheel and damaged the rim. From then on we had to take it gently. I've no idea what it was we hit but we had no alternative but to slack off. "

Still, for his first time on gravel in the Impreza AND on Pirelli's, holding third place is pretty damn impressive.

And Petter!

BTW, was it me, or did it give you a bit of a "tingly" feeling when Colin McRae climbed into the seat of Petter's Impreza yesterday. Probably just me. :)
Matt 04-20-2002 11:02 PM

That pep-talk from Colin was too cool!

Just out of curiosity...I missed Sno Drift. When will it be re-broadcast? The NascarTV crap shows that it won't be on all next week.

Any ideas?
Pikeadon 04-21-2002 12:21 AM

its nice too see that you guys are giving petter some props:D
he'd definetley been a contender if it wasn't for his car troubles. They said the throttle cable alone cost him 4 min and his tranny cost him even more time:mad: He's 2:40 down and fifth place seems like it is doable Rovanpera is 2:05 down currently in fifth. Hopefully gronholm will crash out so tommy can jump up in the points.

dwx 04-21-2002 08:42 AM

Makinen ahead of Burns again after SS19, with one stage left, although only 1 second, he'll need to push to maintain the position. Petter has 5th locked up. 2/5 isn't too shabby and a 2nd would keep Makinen in the hunt with Gronholm, who is going to win the event now. I really feel bad for McRae, he's always been my favorite driver. Pugs at least 1/3/4 though.

Subaru has won 8 of the last 9 stages...Just have to wait for one more to see how it all turns out.

Subaru should be fine this year. Makinnem confidence should improve so he could get a couple of seconds and third places in the next three events. Petter is flying, he should get a victory if he stays on the road and the car gives him a break. Subaru should finish the year with a comfortable second place. They need to get another good driver to compete for the manufacturer. Most teams have at least four driver per event. Look a Peugeut: they have an impresive line up of drivers.
Maybe next year Subaru will get Collin .:D He seems to be kissing butt!! Just look at the encouragement that he gave to Solberg. He is proving(at least trying) that he is a team player. Not just a great driver but a great human being!!:o

The results may be encourging that there may be better times ahead but these results only put them further behind the pugs and Makinen further behind Gronholm.
Like Superveget said Subaru will probably take second with only the two drivers. But Gronholm is going to have to get some retirements if Makinen wants to win the drivers title.

Superveget I was thinking the same thing when Collin was talking to Petter. I think Collin wanted a closer look at the new Impreza and wanted to show that he and Petter are still tight. Mabye the reason Subaru is only running two cars this year is that they are saving money to get Collin next year:D

Petter is going to win in Argentina IIRC he took 5th last year:)
WillRX 04-22-2002 04:34 AM

The footage of Colin chomping on a slice of watermelon, then getting in the subaru with petter, and closing the door with his foot(to keep the nosy cameras out) has got to be the coolest thing I've ever seen one competitor do for another in any sport, anywhere.

Last week when M.Schumacher won at Imola, he didn't even look at his younger brother Ralf, who was third. Rallyers could teach the world a thing or two about compassion and sportsmanship.

WillRX
brainrally 04-22-2002 11:26 AM

Peugeot looks to have the best cars and best team. Wouldn't surprise me to see more Pug 1-2's on the next few gravel rallies. Of course, if the Subies suffer no more mechanical or electronic glitches, Solberg may very well finish in first somewhere in there. Makinen is slowly but surely taking to the Subie. Burns is taking well to the 206. He could well be a contender for the Driver's title, but he's going to have a difficult challenge with Gronholm who is showing great form all season. Panizzi was impressive on tarmac, but not much to watch otherwise.

Ford is looking bad. Not competitive on tarmac. Not as reliable on the rough gravel surfaces (several power steering failures). Of course, this was just the first gravel rally. So that statement is premature. But it's not without basis. Highest placed Ford is sixth place on an event that was expected to be dominated by Ford and Subaru. Both Subies finished ahead, and three Pugs. Yeah, Colin was out in front and erred. It was the ONLY Ford out front by leg 3.

Subaru is doing better than Ford at being competitive, partly due to Petter's maturing as a driver. However, Subaru's reliability is behind the Pug record now. That's what's holding them back. A bad piston in Sweden. Throttle problems in Cyprus. Of course, this happened to Petter and not Tommi. So their reliabiliaty record is somewhat better than Ford's in my opinion.

Mitsubishi is a fallen star. They lost their best driver. They lost their best car. A mere shell of it's former self. Not competitive on any surface. Where'd they go wrong? It saddens me to see them like this. I hope they can get the car sorted.

Skoda and Hyundai are where they were expected to be, not having been in the competition near as long, nor having quite as much money as the big spenders Ford and Peugeot. But they have shown some potential. Hopefully, they'll continue to improve. But for now, they compete against each other, and possibly Mitsubishi. But they won't mix it with the big boys this year (I'm just referring to Manufacturer's points).

I don't know why I wrote all that. I just felt like it.
Dussander 04-22-2002 11:52 AM

I vote that as the best rally this year.
Rattler 04-22-2002 02:53 PM

Was it stage 12 that was mud at one end and dust at the other? That was one nasty stage! Colin and Marcus both said it was the worst-conditioned stage they ever ran.

I also thought that was very very cool of Colin to have that talk with Petter. I will refrain from calling him McCrash now. Well, maybe.;)

There were enough rolls on Leg 3 to fill a bakery! I was at my friend's and got a few interested in WRC now.
tensionrev 04-23-2002 11:27 AM

Someone brought it up earlier, but no answer. Where did "555" go? I looked on the swrt.com, but found nothing. Did they pull the sponsorship?

I agree with everyone else. If Colin is going anywhere, it is to Subaru. Where else would he go, to Suzuki's upcoming WRC team? He likes the small cars and does not care about the money. He probably hates Peugeot and all they stand for because they win so much. Therefore Subaru gets the 'highest potential' award for two strong drivers, a strong car, and contending with manufacturers who have 3 to 4 good drivers. If they lost the '555' sponsorship, they may not be able to afford Tommi for much longer, I fear.
grimlock 04-23-2002 02:10 PM

Some countries don't allow tobacco sponsorships on the cars. Subaru runs the swoosh in those countries. Same thing happens a lot in F1.

Edit: Hmm, just went back and read Jim's post. Now I have no idea why Mitsu would be running Marlboro livery and Subaru wouldn't have the 555 flying. Anyone else?

Cyprus 555...

grimlock:
Edit: Hmm, just went back and read Jim's post. Now I have no idea why Mitsu would be running Marlboro livery and Subaru wouldn't have the 555 flying. Anyone else?
I don't think sponsorship deals are sealed with a handshake. Probably a lawyer or two or three involved. I would expect that in turn for a bundle of BAT cash, SWRT would be *required* to advertise 555 cigarettes in those events where it is permitted by law. Since Mitsu was flying Marlboro in not-quite-EU Cyprus, I have to assume that tobacco advertising is allowed there and that SWRT would be required to fly 555 to fulfill their side of the sponsorship deal.

I have been trying to think of possible reasons and can only offer conjecture and possible outcomes:

1) SWRT left the decals back at the shop. They are really, really sorry! BAT *might* not sue them.
2) Contract dispute. BAT's check bounced or they did not meet, in FHI's eyes, some other condition of the sponsorship agreement. No pay, BAT, no play.

3) Change of heart. Especially given an increase in WRC/SWRT exposure in the U.S. thanks to frequent Speed Channel WRC reruns, FHI/SoA realizes that they are at risk of projecting an image of Subaru that is at odds with their increasingly popular Outback-L.L.Bean-Martina Navratilova-IMBA-we-sponsor-healthy-things approach to the U.S. market. Internal meetings are held. Pragmatic minds prevail. A lawyer invents something along the lines of #2 that means that they won't put 555 decals on the car for any event that has potential for rebroadcast in the U.S. Several lawyers are guaranteed a paycheck for a year or two.

All three of these are pure, unadulterated conjecture. I invite anyone to add #4, #5, and so on. Further, if anyone is on here from FHI/SoA/SWRT who can actually answer the question, *please* chime in.

#4 BAT sees Subaru getting their asses handed to them by
peugeot, and asks for a refund or something of that nature

When is Risto coming back? I heard at the beginning of the season that he may be back for Argentina
grimlock 04-23-2002 10:35 PM

It doesn't make sense, though, for BAT to drop Subaru or the other way either. Dave Richards owns Prodrive and also runs the BAR F1 team. Major sponsor of each: Why British American Tobacco, of course. They're pretty inbred. Definitely weird that the 555 wasn't being flown.

Pikeadon:
Well, lots of contracts have performance clauses. Since we don't have any way to know exactly what's in the BAT-SWRT sponsorship contract, I wouldn't rule your #4 out.

Grimlock:
It doesn't make sense, though, for BAT to drop Subaru or the other way either. Dave Richards owns Prodrive and also runs the BAR F1 team. Yes, weird, on some level. I *drive* a Subaru and would like to root for SWRT but currently root for (not-sponsored-by-tobacco) Peugeot (they *do* have the sexier car, don't they???). I have been following the whole BAT/555 thing with great interest. Yes, I agree with you that "It doesn't make sense...." but something is going on, isn't it???

For the moment. my money is on theory #3.

Theory #5 anyone?
