Well with proper wiring i'm pretty sure its not ultra hard to wire it into the parking light circuit. Seeing as how a lot of us decided to take off the side markers and replace with covers, the parking light circuit has just become a free switch to do whatever we want with it. As a bonus, the wires already go to the fenderwell, just find some way to get it back into the engine compartment and BAM! you can have hardwired angel eyes

very cool! I can't wait to see pics of the first ideas on the Subie! ...maybe around the fog lights?

do you need to make the slices with the butter knife though? I think it would look cool if it didnt have the slices, but maybe i missed something about them being necessary.
would there be any way to apply this to stock headlights? So far I could see it being useful for the jdm or morettes, but am having trouble seeing it on the stockers.

Quoted from another DIY Angel Eyes
That is because light goes in straight line, and it takes the shape of whatever object it goes through. In the case above, it goes through one end of the rod and out the other end, like a fiber optic cable. In order to make it lights up like the true 'Angel Eye', I had to refract the light as it goes through the rod by making multiple cuts (scratches) along the rod, using a Dremel tool. Each cut/scratch allows the light to 'escape' the ring. Each cut is about 2~3mm apart. Note that the more cuts you make, the dimmer the light becomes, because most of it has 'escaped' before it reach the other end of the rod.
so thats why there are cuts.:)

Exactly what I was thinking... some rough sand paper would just make a bunch of cuts that would blend to gether nicely I would think. Only bad thing is you'd have to be sure to sand around the circle because it may refract the light wierd if you just go random..

I think you'll find the "cuts" a necessity. If the clear plastic was only superficially roughened, light would sparsely emerge...and you'd end up with insufficient illumination. You'll find the "real" angel eyes to be ribbed. Frankly, I see atomicapples' cuts as superior to this, as these "cuts" need not be omindirectional.

i have a question-- is there any reason that the dude with the angel eyes on his crx didnt make the little cuts all the way aroudn the angel eyes-- he only went about 3/4 of the way or so around the ring....
was that just for aesthetics, or did i miss something?

I had my lights out again the other day, and just sorta poked around and I too had wondered what it took to get them apart, and you confirmed the ultra PITA'ness of it! Awesome job, tho, nonetheless!

What about doing this mod on the GC8's fog lamps?
Would you be able to crack open the casing the same way as in the clear corners mod over at scoobymods?
Thanks in advance!

I just got back home home depot and radio shack and pulled one of my GC8 fogs. See what happens when I have nothing to do on Saturday... Here we go.
So I will list some brief details til I am done.
3 10mm bolts hold the fog lamp in you will see at the forth corner a phillips screw which seems to be an adjustment to late for me I tried that before finding the 3rd bolt.
Next up you will disconnect the fog bulb two wire and a retaining clip. YOuw ill see the wiring harness has a retainer/saftey clip you can unscrew this or just bend it back. I just bent i t back no problem.
Inspecting the fog lamp it will be har work as with the others found out doing this the lamp is sealed the black housing has a lip that goes over the lip of the glass lens I used a very thin screw driver to start working around it. I chipped the glass under the black plastic nothing major but I was pushing hard. I can tell already I will chip some plastic maybe some more glass only in the area which will not be visable. I am sure you could avoid this if you use a high temp heat gun or another source of heat so the plastic will bend up much easier. FOr teh glue holding it together you could probally heat it upa s well to free easier however I am lazy today and plan on breaking through it and just using new silcone to re seal it.
More when I am done...
Supplies List:
Home Depot - Bali Today Mini replacment wand $2.97
(each rod is a little over 2 feet you will need two for large GC8 fogs)
Radio Shack - 5mm white LED 1100mcd
(The LEDs come in all colors and brightness which is rated by mcd. I simply copied what others were using 1100mcd.
$4.99 each ouch! probally found cheaper else where.
Radio Shack - 220 ohm resistors $.99
(as above I copied the websites as I am not fimiar with ohms watts etc etc.
Thats it get your toaster oven ready and a flat head oh yes an electrical tape and you should be set as above websites listed.
side note: I noticed some LEDs were larger and I noticed some stated 180 degree viewing ange, wide angle view etc. Maybe someone can supply mroe info what would work best or how to point them for best lighting.

Doing it "right" involves minimal chipping, recreating the original seal when put back together...
the problem is he's chipping away at a lot of the plastic...

In addition...its not a "full" circle
it kind of looks like a chubby "u" Im sure if you created a full circle, and reposition the led, it would look better

Fog wont be a problem...
When the bulb is out the inside is exposed to the elements I had it near my open window and it has been snow ing than near heat and no sign of condensation...
Lots of silicon to prevent moisture build up once installed however..

Agreed...its just hard (I've been there B4)
In order to avoid the U or the O with the top cut off (because of the tape) the top black part should be minimized...
Therefore a hole should be made where the halves meet...
creating a half circle in each section...
like this:

I dont know about rice. Really I was set on distinguishing rice from um...not rice, but theres just too many factors and that its your money and hey I say have fun. Its all about if its tastefull. This halo job, I think, is very nice. It adds a touch of class to the wrx. And that idea of putting the led inside a cut out hole in the acrylic(sp?) rod sounds good, but as said before, the light is shown on the halo only because it is refracted by the small dremel or butterknife cuts. If you were to cut out a hole, wouldnt the light just refract on the hole alone? Im not sure just my input. I think this would be a nice look in the jdm lights also.

coastas thanks for the diagram do you have pics of your finished product as well? Also the site the diagram came from or did you make that?
Well update on my project well I should think before I start ripping my car apart but oh well at least I thought of what I could have done better for all of you. For GC8 fogs in stead of ripping the lens of and risking condensation and damage buy a pair of clean lens caps (lexan or similiar plastic) I forgot who was selling them but they were available and sandwich the ring between lens and cover. This will save the you work if you want to remove or replace a bulb.
Also a little research I did was the lower the resistor the brighter the light. I blow my first set up by accident by not using a resistor and trying a direct connection to a 9v battery due to the 220 resistor was making the LED dim. So my next purchase was a 47 k ohm Radio shack resistor part #271-1105 and new LEDS witha higher rating of 2600mcd (very bright) part number for LEDs are 276-316. These are blue LEDs BTW. I am hoping it will just give a slight blue glow up the ring. I hope to have pics soon.
Back to the fog covers if anyone has a link please post for others.

Nah..I just threw that diagram together real quick to help you out..
I cant stand that black part on top...
Ive had issues with my Fogs which is why I tend to shy away from taking them apart...
Also, Why dont you get a variable resistor?
So you can adjust the brightness to your liking?

Evil did you use blue led's?
| Evil Imports | 12-03-2002 10:03 PM |
i used white leds
| nomadtw | 12-05-2002 10:44 AM |
k, here's the deal, on the various subjects brought up here
the first angel eye link
guy did that for his computer, to put angel eyes around the fan opening's on his case.... case modding, i'm sure some here have heard of it,
myself, i am somewhat experienced in case modding, and the use of led's
led's will in fact work w/ different voltages, but only up to the rated voltage, they will be the brightest at the rated voltage, and you can go down a very small amount, they dim pretty fast as the voltage goes down.... as for increasing it, it's not quite as easy, they burn up, litteraly, they get hot and smoke and catch fire... so make sure you have a large enuf resistor on there, or they'll fry, it's usually best to get a resistor that's a bit higher resistance than you need just to be on the safe side so you don't burn up a 5 dollar led.... and as for getting them cheaper, you won't find them much cheaper for the extreme brightness of the super bright ones at ratshack...
but it's possible to get a GB going or something to order led's from www.bgmicro.com they have some insanely bright ones, and cheap, but i think they have something like a $20 minimum order, and the led's are like 2 bux a piece... plus shipping, which usually comes in a plastc bag, in a padded envelope from them for things like this...
another option.... for the angel eyes a much easier option would be electroluminscent cable....
glow wire, now... apc sells it in pep boys.... but i don't know if i would use theres, there's a company that ppl have been using for case modding for a while that does neon, and EL cable, and EL sheets, taht you can cut to fit, and i think this would work better, but EL cable and sheets are expensive....
you can do some amazing stuff w/ EL sheets...
cut to any shape and it glows, it's the same stuff that indiglow guages and pedals and such are made of, once again, not cheap....
i had planned to do an angel eye mod whenever i can find a set of the knockoff gc8 morettes, that procarparts used to sell, but doesn't seem to have any mroe of.... if anyone knows where to get them i'll buy them, do an angel eye mod and show the result...

but it's possible to get a GB going or something to order led's from www.bgmicro.com they have some insanely bright ones, and cheap, but i think they have something like a $20 minimum order, and the led's are like 2 bux a piece... plus shipping, which usually comes in a plastc bag, in a padded envelope from them for things like this...
another option.... for the angel eyes a much easier option would be electroluminscent cable....
glow wire, now... apc sells it in pep boys.... but i don't know if i would use theres, there's a company that ppl have been using for case modding for a while that does neon, and EL cable, and EL sheets, taht you can cut to fit, and i think this would work better, but EL cable and sheets are expensive....
you can do some amazing stuff w/ EL sheets...
cut to any shape and it glows, it's the same stuff that indiglow guages and pedals and such are made of, once again, not cheap....
i had planned to do an angel eye mod whenever i can find a set of the knockoff gc8 morettes, that procarparts used to sell, but doesn't seem to have any mroe of.... if anyone knows where to get them i'll buy them, do an angel eye mod and show the result...

hey guys... my bro has a civic with projector lights and i was wondering if u use 4 leds and 2 halos per projector light a transistor would not be needed because i think u could just connect the 4 leds together and it would ok. also if u tap into the parking lights.. the volts would be less than 12 because you are sharing the parking light energy and 4 leds. if this sounds ridiculous please tell me a different way to wire my bros car.

Wouldn't purchasing a 12-14V Led solve the problem? I think they make variable potentiometers w/ built in resistors as well. Also, I wonder how good it would look with 2 different color LED's? What I was thinking in to have an orange one that is wired into your blinkers, and a white one that is wired into your parking lights.

they dont' sell 12v led's
thye just don't use enuf power to make them 12v
they sell clusters that run on 12v, but there's like 12 led's in the cluster and they still have resistors on a pcb
and you can't just wire up the power, it doesn't just split the power
cars run on dc current, and led's are not incandescent bulbs...
dc current will pump 12v through, regardless, it's not like ac, if you put a 2.5v led in it'll pump 12v through, if you put 6 2.5v led's in it'll pump 12v through each of them, and it pumps 12v through the corner marker...

I'm going to be getting a few 3000mcd bright white LED's and i'll have some left over.
If anyone wants a couple, PM me... $2 a piece. Much better than the white 1100mcd LED's at Rat Shack for $4.99 a piece.
