Factory Subaru Road Racing Team to debut Legacy wagon at Lime Rock Park

The factory Subaru Road Racing Team, managed by ICY Racing / Phoenix Performance, will debut its Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT wagon in the Grand Am Cup series at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, CT, on May 2627.

In its first full season of racing Subaru vehicles, ICY Racing / Phoenix Performance ran three 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STI vehicles in the SCCA Club Racing National series to earn a National Championship along with the Northeast and Midwest Divisional titles. As team drivers Chuck Hemmingson, Kristian Skavnes, and Dave Rosenblum campaign their all-new 2006 STI cars in an effort to repeat as National Champions in the SCCA Club Racing Touring 2 Class, the team look to apply this success to run a limited schedule of Grand Am Cup events this year in the Street Tuner (ST) class.

Were pleased to invite the Subaru enthusiast community to enjoy our hospitality (food and beverages) and meet the team on Friday, May 26th, from 11:30AM to 2:30PM, near our race trailer. Friday is Practice Day while Saturday is Qualifying (11:10AM) and the Race (at 2:45PM). Well be handing out hero cards and handshakes all-day on Friday and Saturday, so come out for an enjoyable race weekend with friends and family and cheer on the Legacy wagon of the Subaru Road Racing Team!

Hello,

Congrats! Road racing Subarus has been my passion for half a decade now, and let me tell you, I wouldn't have it any other way. These are great cars that have awesome potential in road racing. It's great to see another team joining us in the Grand Am Cup series!

It'll be huge fun for us to tear down the track with you guys at Mid Ohio and GOTO and ICY together will be a sight to fear for the competitors!

Which other races are you doing?

Congrats again and GO SUBARU!

Didn't this wagon make a sneak appearance at the all-Scooby event, Wicked Big Meet, in Mass this past weekend? There was a road race Legacy waggie there, silver & blue livery, it looked extremely nice.

Congrats....I've seen clips of the Icy Racing STi's and they were awesome overcoming all the cars in the class. Also watched the GOTO guys at Laguna Seca....they fell a little behind because i guess the lugs weren't coming of the rear tire..bummer... anyways thumbs up to you guys and good luck..

CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION

M3s may go BALLISTIC when blown off by scooby wagons on track. (this is why track med teams were invented!)

Car on display at WBM in Mass looked wicked good. Cage work was excellent. Ride height was "don't run over a pack of Camel straights or you'll bust something important" low. No doubt the motor is wicked strong.

More powa to ya!

At Laguna Seca we had zero pit problems and went from 22nd to 6'th in our debut race. You are thinking of Phoenix where we had a problem in the pits. We were running as high as 3rd though and still ended up 11'th after our slow pit. We hope to put everything together at Mid Ohio so expect a great result.

It will be cool to finally run against another Subaru.

Unfortunately there will not be any television coverage for this coming race at Lime Rock but there will be live audio and timing through www.grand-am.com.

As for the ICY Racing website, it is down temporarily for maintenance. It should be up and running soon.

As for the car itself, it appeared at both the Subaru Motorsports Day in New Jersey and was on display at Wicked Big Meet this past weekend. We really appreciate all the comments on the car and hope to see many of you at Lime Rock. Our next scheduled GAC race will be at Mid Ohio in June. Having both Legacys on track should be fun.

Thanks again!

What we need are four or five ppl around the track with video cams and someone willing to edit and produce our own Limerock coverage. Man I wish I had the time to do this this weekend.

Someone could also record the commentary and synch it with the editted video that would be sweet.

Legacy wagon 6th place!!!
Congrats to the ICY Team!

We had a great time hanging out with the guys from the team= cool people!

The wagon qualified 5th (out of 32!)
ran in 2nd place for over a 1/2 hour!!
then got punted off the corse by an RSX :furious: ...some blemishes on the sheet metal ..but not much

Karma is a b!tch though: that same RSX got a pitlane penalty then blew up a couple laps leter

Legacy came back up to 6th place by the end of the race = not bad at all!

thanks so much to ICY & Subaru for a really cool race day at Lime Rock!

Congrats on sixth place finish. You definately showed the field and spectators that you have both a strong competitive car for the class and a great team with great skills and knowledge. It was extremely enjoyable to watch despite the acura's tap. You guys came back with avengeance and still ended with a strong showing.

The team hospitality towards spectators was well recieved and just goes to show that the subaru "hospitiality" extends from local meets to sporting events and doesn't really single out anyone. My bf and I were very impressed some of you took time to talk to us (as some teams just can't be bothered. . .). We learned a lot and will be cheering you on throughout the season.

Good morning everyone and Happy Memorial Day!!! It is a fine day to take a moment to remember all of those who have served to defend our country and its freedoms, and honor the sacrifices they have made...

With a day off and some free time, I figured I would say thank you to all of you who stopped by on Friday and Saturday at Lime Rock Park in Ct. to say hello and wish us well... It was great seeing so many Subaru enthusiasts out at the races and hearing all of your excitement about the great Subaru products... Here is brief report on our weekend and the success we enjoyed...

For those of you interested in Legacy GT racing news, The ICY Phoenix Racing team debutted their new Legacy GT Sportwagon in the Grand American Cup Sport Tuner race held at Lime Rock Park, Ct on Saturday May 27th... Driving the Legacy were Kristian Skavness, 2005 SCCA Northeast Division Champion, and Chuck Hemmingson, SCCA Touring 2 National Champion.

ICY and Phoenix are headquartered in Phoenixville, Pa. and represent a joint venture by long time Street Stock racers, Dave Rosenblum and Joe Aquilante. The team and crew work closely with SOA in preparing and campaigning cars in SCCA National racing in the Touring 2 class and fielded the 2005 National Championship car at the SCCA runoffs, driven by Chuck Hemmingson...

From the time the crew unloaded the car from the semi trailer, there was lots of interest in the car, first because it was a Subaru, and then because it was a Wagon... By the time the first day of practice was over, The Subaru Legacy GT showed that it was a serious contender and placed third in the first session right out of the box, and then first overall in the second session in the rain!!!

Although forced to run almost 500 pounds heavier than the other cars in the class, the Legacy GT's symmetrical AWD and turbo charged boxer engine, proved up to the task and in the rain the car was just short of spectacular..

The great performance continued on Saturday, and in the morning session the crew and drivers experimented with different chassis settingss and fuel consumption testing, still managing to set a top ten time...

In qualifying, Kris Skavness set a quick pace, showing as high as second overall in the early stages of the session, and eventually ending up 5th overall in the field of 25 cars... Not a bad place to be as the new kids on the professional racing block!

At the start of the race, Kristian quickly moved up to third position, then on lap 14, took over second... For the next 22 laps, Kristian kept pace with the leading BMW 3 series of Will Turner, while holding off a train of 6 to 8 attacking ST competitors who probably could not believe that they were chasing a STATION WAGON!!! We left the dog at home and the kids were watching from the hill... But yes... there it was. Chasing the Ultimate Driving machine, being chased by the best Sport Tuning cars in the country and still having room for folding chairs, camping gear and 15 bags of groceries!!!

On lap 36, a pursuing Acura made what could best be called a poor move, and when attemting to outbrake the Legacy, lost his own brakes and plowed Kristian off the track sending Kristian on a wild ride on the wet grass into the boondocks and narrowly missing the retaining wall..

Even though the grass was wet and other cars usually got stuck in that quagmire, Kristian hardly stopped and used the AWD to scramble out and get back on track in 13th place...

From there, he worked his way back up to 6th place, before pitting for fuel and tires on lap 69 and handing the car over to his co driver, Chuck Hemmingson... The pit stop was flawless and the crew expertly changed two front tires, filled her with gas, straightened up the groceries in the back and got chuck back on track in record time...

Chuck wasted no time getting up to speed, working his way up into the top 6 and was challenging for 3rd place late in the race. As the pack he was racing with began lapping slower cars, Chuck got held up by one of the slower cars and eventually settled for 6th place overall and the well deserved cheers of the crew and on lookers...

The car ran flawlessly for almost two hours and 15 minutes and except for a few minor bumps and bruises looks no worse for the wear..

So there you have it , a Legacy Sport Wagon GT as a racecar, in near showroom stock trim taking on all of the sport coupes and sedans and showing it can do the job...

We had a lot of fun pointing out to interested fans that this legacy runs a completely stock drive line, with stock boost, (Engine, trans and differential units), Stock brake system and ABS with racing pads... Stock suspension bushings and pickup points with aftermarket JRZ shocks and springs and the stock exhaust system with mufflers... We did ask GAC officials to allow an aftermarket sound system so that we could hear our car over the noise of other cars!!!

Subaru builds great cars and it was fun showing what the stock components could do in the crucible of real racing. We are very appreciative of the support and help that SOA provides and their unwavering commitment to excellance... We also need to acknowledge and thank all of the drivers and crew for their dedicated hard work and tireless devotion to the details day after day... Without Klevis, Jason, Paul, Carl, Bill, Franz and the many individuals who help out continuously , we would never be able to get the job done.

Next Race is Mid Ohio on June 24 an 25, so if any of you would like to stop by and see us, put that date on your calendar and stop by Mid Ohio and say hello.

Thanks again for all of you who stopped by and for the kind words and well wishes. We appreciate your support!!!

I saw the wagon when i stoped in during a bike ride to chate with cletis one sunday about 2 months ago . The Pheonix facility is unbelievable now. Way to represent. Ya, Joe knows me as the "bike rider dude" lol. Ill stop in again when my car gets finished.
Sgt.Gator 06-18-2014 11:02 AM

It's Back!
To revive an old thread because I've revived this car:)
I acquired this unique car from Joe and have brought it back to racing after 7 years of storage.

The Colonel Red Racing team is racing it in the ICSCC ST class in Oregon/Washington/British Columbia this year. We may possibly do a few NASA west events too. ICSCC ST is a high performance class, the basic rule is 10lbs/hp, after that almost anything is allowed. There are some super fast cars there...and the run group (4) is even faster.

If ya'll are interested I'll keep racing updates and videos posted up here. I'm already doing that in Legacy GT forum, but I see the enthusiasm is here too from the comments in the original posts.

And yes, it is blast to race against M3s and Corvettes in a wagon. The car got a LOT of attention at the two events I've done so far this season (Spokane and Pacific Raceways). Everyone loves to see a Subaru Wagon on the track!

Snowphun 06-18-2014 02:47 PM

Good stuff, definitely a blast from the past. What's your target weight?
Sgt.Gator 06-18-2014 06:41 PM

3325 is my min wt now, at 16 psi we are at 332 awhp. The plan is to get certified dynos at 12,13,14,15 psi too and then drop weight to match. We have 90lbs of ballast bolted in now.

Coming out of the back to back hairpins with a super fast BMW coming on strong.

<<<>>>

Start of 1 hour Enduro, Spokane Gran Prix 2014.

At the start I'm surrounded by BMW Pro3 cars. They are faster than my Legacy Wagon in the corners, but I know that over the course of an hour I can pass all of them on the long front straight.

Coming out of the back straight I miss a shift and another one gets by me, dangnabit! However he's not in front of me for long.

1 lap in, I go 3 wide with two BMW Pro3 cars at the end of the front straight.

I decide discretion is called for, 2 seconds later you'll see why. At 125 mph things go wrong fast. Luckily no one was injured, and one of the Pro3 cars was able to finish the race.

It's worth popping this one out in Full Screen mode!

Good stuff. That's a lot of e30's out there.
Sgt.Gator 06-24-2014 02:07 PM

Cleaned up the car for the racing this weekend. New brake pads on the fronts, CL RC6. I've had good luck with CL pads on my other cars, hoping they do well here too. If you've never heard of CL pads it's worth checking them out. I get mine at Essex.

The front tires are rubbing on the K-Sports coilovers. I am installing a 5mm spacer to solve that issue.

Enabled flat footing shifting in the Cobb Accessport, we'll see if I can get used to that!

Going to PSI in Portland on Friday for official Dynojet AWD certs at 14, 15, 16 psi. In anticipation of probably using the 15 psi map I'm pulling 90 lbs of ballast out of the car.

While I'm in Portland I'll go over to Cindi and Fred Lux's place to get a NASA Tech done. I'd like to go the Western Nationals in PTB/TTB this fall, if possible. http://www.cindilux.com/

Bend, Ore (July 23, 2014) In 2006 Subaru built their first factory supported road race car, a 2005 Legacy GT Wagon, and raced it in the Grand Am cup. In 2007 the team switched to Legacy Spec B sedans, and the wagon was converted to time attack, driven by Tarzan Yamada. Since 2007 the race car has been collecting dust in a warehouse in Pennsylvania.

This year the car was acquired by Colonel Red Racing of Bend Oregon. Subaru of Bend is sponsoring this unique and historic car as it races across the NW in the International Conference of Sports Car Clubs (ICSCC) ST class.

We are extremely gratified to have Subaru of Bends support in keeping this car on the race track, said Jim Gator Hudson, owner of Colonel Red Racing. Not only because the car is unique historically, but its a lot of fun to race against Corvettes, BMW M3s, and Mustangs in Subaru Wagon! Subaru of Bends service technicians performance expertise will be valuable in keeping this car going throughout the season, and having a source of OEM Subaru parts is very important.

We look forward to sponsoring this car in 2014 and 2015, said Bill Thomas, President of Subaru of Bend. Subarus are great performance cars and Subaru of Bend is building a reputation as performance specialists. This gives our technicians a chance to show their expertise, and the dealership the opportunity to support an important piece of Subaru history. We are the oldest Subaru dealer on the west coast and cant wait to see this car racing on west coast tracks.
