Mike, I wish I could just give you my 16x8 volks with hoosier 245/45-16 AS03 1/2 used on them.... but I'm afraid you'd wanna keep them. :D
This is why I've been thinking about going to ESP. I think it can be done even in the wagon. How bad is that going to piss off pony car drivers? :D

Just a heads up...due to a bad accident between a bridge and a gasoline tanker last week, the Southbound lanes of I-75 near Sarasota, Florida are closed until repairs can be made. It's estimated that this will remain closed for a minimum of 4 weeks. Please keep this in mind when planning your trip to Ft. Myers for the Tour, leave plenty of time to negotiate the detours (which are causing up to a 3 hour delay depening on the time of day).

Opie - I heard that a good detour was Rt. 70 (out of Bradenton)to 31 South. A little more scenic...
| Matt | 02-11-2004 09:46 PM |
I've been watching it closely since I live near it. Took me two hours to get through it on Sunday evening.
Anyway, it'll be done shortly.

Yeah...you could also use state road 72 to county 769. Believe it or not, there are some curves on those roads.

Strange, they mentioned on the Local News this morning that the southbound lanes were re-opened this morning around 6 am, but I can't find any info online to confirm that.

OK just found this:
I-75 SOUTHBOUND LANES WILL BE REOPENED - Sarasota County, Fl The southbound lanes of I-75 (Big Slough Bridge) be will open to traffic by midnight tonight, February 11. Crews poured the new bridge deck and have made all necessary repairs. The I-75 northbound lanes are expected to be restored by Thursday afternoon.
On Monday, Feb. 2, a gasoline tanker hit the bridge. The ensuing explosion and fire caused servere damage to the structure. Crews from APAC worked around the clock to build the temporary roadway through the median for southbound traffic. Crews from ZEP Construction have been working 16 hours per day or more to make the necessary repairs to the bridge.
We appreciate your cooperation and patience while crews made necessary emergency repairs to the Big Slough Bridge
So maybe now all you ProSolo travelers won't have any problems coming down! :D

OK, couldn't stand it, I'm in!!!
Joel, did you say you thought Knowledge might have that elbow for the stock bypass valve I needed? Or a whole bypass valve? I was gonna call you tomorrow and ask, but just read this post about you leaving tomorrow, so figured I'd better hurry. Any chance you could check? Bring it with you? Or anyone else coming have one? I will buy it from you, or swap my Turbo XS BOV for it.

Call Bill Cook at Subaru of Jacksonville. He will most likely have one and I will go ahead and bring it down with me if you want. I'll be in Ft Myers from mid-day Friday on, so it shouldn't be any trouble to swap it all out. Bill's # is 904-641-6455. Tell him you know me and he'll set you up.

That's probably your best bet. I was offering to check around the shop while I was up there last week. I'm not sure if Knowledge would have one around or not, and they're about 45 minutes north of me (I'm heading south and trying to beat the infamous ATL rush hour)...
I'm still not going to protest you for a BOV. I'm just glad to have some more entries in the class.

See you there! Running the VW in SM, however. But it looks like Katie has to work all day Friday, so we'll probably have the STi as the "runabout".
Where are all the SM folks?!?!? We need a couple more cars!
Thanks for the traffic info. What is it with Florida and tanker trucks flipping over or hitting bridges?

But that was part of the argument at one point in time that anyone off the street can beat the top ESP guys in a mildly prepped car.

oh, I thought the argument was that a "national level guy" could beat them in a *mildly prepped* sti, much less a fully prepped one.

-Tom
| dwx | 02-23-2004 03:44 PM |
I never read the argument as anybody could come off the street and beat a top level ESP guy in a mildly prepped EVO or STI. I always read it as it would supplant the current ESP cars if top level guys started driving them, with minimal preperation done to them.
They always point out the year Bob Tunnell campaigned the E36 M3 in ESP and killed everyone. But that was Bob Tunnell driving the car, not some random guy in a prepped M3.
The EVO that was at nationals last year had a national level driver driving it, and was decently prepped. If you saw where the owner of that car ended up...it was nowhere near the trophies.
Anyways, good job to Mike and the other Subaru winners. Didn't look like a huge field of cars there for some reason, I guess the fact Florida is pretty damn far for everyone not in Florida has something to do with it.

dwx - you sure bud? That evo was actually fastest in the dry  and only lost because he was 0.6 slower in the RAIN. I'm assuming this had something to do with his tire choice in the torrential kansas rain, as I'm sure shotz was prepped with a rain tire.
That was all with really no seat time/prep time in that car. Throw some parts on it and go.

I thought the owner of the car was not Brett Norgaard, but the guy who ended up in 24th? Brett Norgaard has won national championships before and I believe was driving SPD Tuning's (Mike Shields) SM WRX in California last season.
My point just reiterating your point, that a very good driver in a mildly prepped car can win, but the owner who is probably not a real experienced driver, isn't going to walk away with ESP.

Guys, I'd love to slow down...but, I think there's another second in the car... And I've got to find it...Hehehe...just kidding, maybe a half a second. Car was working great on Saturday, but not so great on Sunday. Way too loose and finally backed off on the struts and it became more compliant on my last run. Azenis were getting real hot about 1/2 way through the course. Still lacking bigtime on brakes...got the 4-pots going on this week hopefully. And can't wait to get the Ecutek running...
Kiko's still dialing in the STi in STU. We decided to lower the ride height on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, the car just handled better from what Kiko said. Plus he had full tread Azenis' on the car. Car was looking good though...fun to watch.
Brian-great working with ya in the announcer Avalon. Such a hard job and somehow we made it through. Those leather seats were getting hot towards the end though...
ESP-As far as ESP goes, I've got to go back and look at the results closer. I know the drivers running there were fairly new as far as I know, and the cars weren't prepped anywhere near where they could be. My thoughts are still up in the air about it...Sam was cookin' though...he's got AOL Hi Speed Technology...now, that was funny...

ESP STi

Some comments about the Ft. Myers event.
I drove the top placed STI in ESP. My car was stock for the most part as I mostly do track events in it. I only have a rear sway bar (22-24 mm), a cat back and a front camber bolt that gets me -2 deg camber. I was running used Road compound hoosiers (225's).
Although the car has much more development potential, I don't know if I would have any chance in ESP. May be Mike would. He was flying, specially on Saturday through the slaloms.
I personally believe that the weakest point of the car is the gearing. Mike was doing the whole course in second. I had to go up and down from second to third 4 times on saturday and 3 times on sunday. Even the evos were doing the whole course in second gear.
I did much better on sunday as saturday's course was quite slalomy and both the car and myself hate slaloms. On Sunday I did much better as it was a little more open. I did the same time as the second-placed camaro.

4 pots won't do jack for you. Just get better pads on the stock brakes, thats all you will EVER need.
IMHO as long as you can hit ABS at any point and time on course by just getting on the brakes harder, you don't need bigger brakes. I can do that in my car right now.

If you can get a brake setup that shifts some bias to the rear like the Stoptech system does (the front piston size is decreased) then you can stop in a shorter distance. You might be able to do the same thing by putting a more aggressive pad on the rear of the stock setup. IMHO the WRX brakes are a weak point. I'm not sure if its the bias or what but my breaking G's are very inconsistent and lower than they should be even on Hoosiers.
Now back to your regularly scheduled program...

You say you can stop in a shorter distance with more brake bias to the rear, you must have some numbers that you'd like to share. How many feet at 60? at 55? at 50? compared to stock WRX brakes with good pads and fluid? If you don't have those numbers, how can you say for certain that Stoptechs kit will stop faster than others?
If you had more brake bias to the rear, and gently hit the brakes in a turn (speaking auto-x here) for corner balance using a left foot brake... if the rears grabbed harder than they do now, I would think it would induce greater understeer by not allowing weight to transition off the rear to the front.

Thats what we need for mike though.

If you had more brake bias to the rear, and gently hit the brakes in a turn (speaking auto-x here) for corner balance using a left foot brake... if the rears grabbed harder than they do now, I would think it would induce greater understeer by not allowing weight to transition off the rear to the front.
I don't have any hard evidence of my brake theory. I talked to Gary Sheehan and he totally replumbed his brake system and put a manually adjustable bias adjustment on it. Of course road racing is different than autocross but that's a data point.
I know what you are saying about trail braking but most of time spent on the brakes is when you are in a straight line. The stock system is designed to be very conservative in regards to brake bias as almost all production cars are. I can't remember the exact source to quote it, maybe GRM magazine I think, but they said that most production cars have 5-10% more front bias than is optimum for straight line stopping just to make the car safe in all driving conditions. There are so many conditions a stock vehicle has to operate it that it has to have more front bias. Anyway, that's one basis for my "theory".
The other problem I have is every inconsistent stopping g-levels. I've run several tests and I get anywhere between 0.65 and 1.05 g's on street tires on asphalt. Even running the test on the same stretch of road in the same spot every time with ABS on I get a pretty wide range. That is stomping the brakes and not threshold braking. After about 10 stops like that in a row I'm about to throw up so that's about as far as I've gotten with the testing.
My biggest problem is getting low stopping g levels during a race which happens pretty consistently. I assume that shifting brake bias to the rear would help that based on some of the reasons I listed earlier but I've not confirmed it. I'm open to any ideas though.
The idea about adding more aggressive pads to the rear came from Danny Popp after he drove my car during a Phase II Evolution driving school. That's probably my best data point of all and is a nice tie in back to the National tour where he was faster than any of the cars other than a couple Mod classes.

Shifting the brake bias rearward likely won't make much difference in braking distances, especialy in ideal conditions. However, it will improve one of the WRX brake systems two main weaknesses - too much front brake bias. On most WRX's I've driven (including mine), the front brakes lock up far sooner than the rears, resulting in less than optimal threshold braking and too much intrusion by the WRX's biggest braking problem - an absolute CRAP Bosch ABS controller. Short of a bias bar, there are two ways to move the brake bias to the rear: less braking force in front, greater braking force in rear. This can be done via either pad compounds or the brake system itself. The 4-pot brakes do reduce front brake torque by approx. 10%, so that's one way to go. They supposedly increase brake feel as well, although I really can't tell much difference, versus my brakes with stainless lines & carbotech pads. I'm going a different (cheaper) route, by installing H6 rear rotors, which increase rear brake torque by approx. 10%.
That crappy ABS controller really is the WRX's achilles heel - especially on street tires. I've gotten used to it, but accomplished autoxers who have co-driven my car routinely invoke ABS, until they learn to baby the brakes. There's currently a complaint in process with the NHTSA, concerning the Impreza's ABS. Hopefully, Subaru will eventually admit the ABS sucks and provide a fix (not holding my breath  )

I personally believe that the weakest point of the car is the gearing. Mike was doing the whole course in second. I had to go up and down from second to third 4 times on saturday and 3 times on sunday. Even the evos were doing the whole course in second gear.

Finally some other Subaru's are "rowing the boat" in auto-x... Join the club and get used to it...
Apparently Subaru's don't like R-compounds. I think the 2 fastest Subaru's were on street tires. (Damn Mike King... ) oh well, I've got Mike's $250 from the weekend before:lol:  I'm sure that'll never happen again so I'm not getting used to it.

Heh I had my redline raised from 7200 to ~7600 rpm so I could hit 60mph in 2nd with the 6MT. At the Atlanta Pro it was running with the stock STI RA redline, which I think tops out at like 8200 rpm... The EJ257 wouldn't last long at that RPM I don't think.

We were gone all last week for a family funeral in Minneapolis. I had dropped Katie off at the airport in Atlanta just before the ProSolo, and then followed myself on Monday.
Then I got a phone call on Thursday as we were getting ready to come back to FL. My whole team got laid-off AGAIN (2nd time in 6 months). They were pretty s#&tty about the way they did it too.
We were still planning to go to the tour, but then realized that I blown the supercharger AGAIN (3rd time in 6 months) at the ProSolo last week. Hard to tell you're missing half your boost in a FWD car in the rain, and no time to look at a boost gauge on an autocross course!
We're done with the OEM VW supercharger. Some people warned me about it long ago...and now I have to admit they were right. But a conversion to a good replacement (Lysholm) will cost $2500, so the car will have to sit for a bit until I find a job.
Pretty lame week.
Sorry...didn't mean to drop a load on everyone, but since you asked...
(But thanks for thinking of us!)
And congrats to all the Subies at the Tour! Two weeks in a row of some strong finishes. [thumbs-up]

Brian-great working with ya in the announcer Avalon. Such a hard job and somehow we made it through. Those leather seats were getting hot towards the end though...

Mike, you kept me cracking up the whole time. Not that I need any more pushing towards full fledged lunacy...
If I get chosen to announce Nat's again (assuming they don't beat me senseless with the mic before then), I'll definately request you as my able assistant, as long as we get the full luxo upgrade announce vehicle.
As for the seats getting warm, mine was too... but I blame the hotdogs they were serving for lunch...

Neal, sorry to hear about your problems -- personal and automotive...
But please don't tell anybody that you beat my Evo, in the rain, with a malfunctioning supercharger!!!

Heck, I'm still cracking up...be glad to do it all over anytime. Any time we can make up things about people and announce it to the whole world, I'm there. We just need a real big calculator next time..."Oh my, that's a 6.9 second improvement!!! Uh..er...wait, nah, that's .3...woops." Now if we can just keep those AS drivers from "backing up" each other, we'll do just fine.

My lips are sealed.
Thanks for the kind thoughts. We'll work though this just like any other bad time.
Seriously though, I never even noticed, so I don't really know when it happened or why. I can't believe it never made any funny noises or anything, since it actually blew chunks of aluminum into the IC. And it still made a good bit of boost, but not like it should. I only drove the car around the block once when I got home and noticed the boost gague didn't look right. Hopefully the IC caught all the chunks.
The car was so traction-limited in the rain that you just couldn't tell. Truthfully, it probably would have been slower with more power in the rain. ;)
