Front licence plate relocation

I'm in a gay ass two plate state and I'm going with a fmic.....I want the best flow possible.....anyone come up with a good front tag relocation solution?
| Dingo3243 | 04-04-2005 10:08 AM |
Yeah, I took mine off.
| wcbjr | 04-04-2005 10:16 AM |
If you are that worried, just move the plate up to where the bolts are through the bottom of the plate.
| silverstipa | 04-04-2005 10:40 AM |
I have seen some people use the plate holder from an EVO.
| Leonardo | 04-04-2005 11:48 AM |
was going to post that as well. Order the EVO plate holder as it goes over your driver side bumper covering the fog cover.
| jsmonet | 04-04-2005 12:01 PM |
ahem. tittywop
| mpower22 | 04-04-2005 12:13 PM |
would using the evo plate holder require me to drill holes in my foglight cover?
| ChrisL2 | 04-04-2005 12:16 PM |
You could get one of those universal license plate holders (the ones with multiple holes in them) at Wal-mart, etc. That way you could center the plate on the bumper mounting holes.

Yes. Unless you wanted to rig up some sort of custom support bracket to mount behind the bumper

Will that work on the 2.0 L cars too?
| jsmonet | 04-04-2005 12:57 PM |
just a small clue here: engine displacement has little to do with the exterior :) sti to wrx, the body remains MOSTLY the same
| calib17a | 04-04-2005 06:02 PM |
I tried to relocate my front license plate this past weekend. I have the turboxs fmic and jdm fog lights. Using steel back straps, speed clips and bolts, I extended the straps from under the bumper using existing holes to affix the speed clips and bolts to. I positioned it between the opening to the fmic and the jdm foglight so it doesn't cover the light beam. In the end I thought it didn't look right so I took it all off. What a pita! I'm sure the fmic is getting enough air to it but don't like the plate covering it for cosmetic reasons. Either I leave it in the stock location with a plate adapter or stick the plate in the windshield with suction cups but may risk giving cops a reason to stop me by not having it on the front bumper.

I ordered an extra driver's side fog light cover without the STi decals on it, got it from Jamie(aka subiegal) for like $39. Bent my plate a little to form around the fog cover, and just drilled holes and mounted it straight to the cover. I have the EVO plate mount and just didn't like the way it looked.

Bgbztoy, that's exactly how I positioned mine but it looks out of place, unbalanced, so I took it off. Oh well.

That's pretty cool discopope, but I'll have to try to make my own to save $100. Thanks for the idea.

I wish someone made something like those in-dash navigation screens in the single din spots, but for license plates. That way, you could mount your plate under the bumper, hit a button and it would extend forward and flip up James Bond style.
| FlyingFishSandwich | 04-04-2005 10:02 PM |
I'm overwelmed by curiosity regarding the speed sensative license plate bracket. It's simply providing enough resistance to counter the wind resistance until the determined speed.
Here's my idea. using the pre-existing license plate holes just hinge the plate. This way it would flip up at even 15-20 miles an hour when the turbo first begins to spool and the FMIC is needed. Though as I work it out in my head there is a posibility that air may get caught behind the plate and below the rubber spacer, possibly causing the plate to "flap." This would be highly undesired. It could atribute to lift on the fore of the car and over all instability. This air could be exausted to either side of the plate and allow it to reach the spacer completely or further facilitate "flapping." Further testing will be required.

Just take it off.. alot of times if you get pulled over the cop will give you a ticket for that instead of 15 over.
| JIN | 04-04-2005 10:36 PM |
Well, that doesn't work in USA. Even if I display it on the passenger side of the windshield all the time, I would still get a ticket. As long as its not appropriately fixed in front of your vehicle ... your are gonna get a ticket in NYC.
Well after 1 ticket, I decided not to contribute any more of these kind of money to the NYPD, and went with the evo plate holder ...

I wanted mine low and to the side. I have an APS CAI so it had to go on the driver side. I mounted the evo bracket first. But this [emailprotected] plate sitting straight in front of the car looked like crap to me. So I trimmed the plate bracket to sit at an angle that went a little more with the cars lines. SO may not like it looks better than before with it dead @ss in center. I will post pics shortly.

bump...can the evo plate holder be drilled in the floglight cover or does it have to go into the bumpercover?
| Lachlan | 09-25-2005 07:11 PM |
You could put it on the dash inside the windshield. What's legal depends on your state. UT has a 2-plate law, but the wording regarding the front plate is something to the effect that it has to be "vertical" which I assume means not sideways. Check out what the law actually says in your state. I just took mine off and haven't been hassled yet.

does anyone know if it's legal to take off the front license plate in ND?
| dypeterc | 09-25-2005 10:05 PM |
You should just paint the license plate on a fog cover

You have to be careful though, because when i first moved to MA i thought it didn't matter if you had front plates or not because 1/3 of the cars didn' thave front plates on. I later noticed (after my warning ticket) that if you have a license plate with red lettering you need both front and rear plates, but if you have a older license plate with green lettering you only need a rear. You're best just looking up the law in your state.

lucky for me- when you get plates here, they become your property. I just drilled holes in mine and moved it up some.. though I like the idea of the flip up plate better. The price is a little steep.. so maybe the knock off ebay styles would be better to wait for.

do what he did ^^^^
but bend the bottom portion of the plate right under the numbers back.
that way you still get your state visable, and any stickers (usually upper corners) visable. but the excess will be out of the way, and you still have your numbers unobstructed

Except for the fact that it is illeagal to modify a plate in any way. At least it is here.

I found a clip of a motorized plate mount that flips up out of the way. It probally wouldn't work with a front mount though. I am not sure who makes this particlular bracket, but a company called www.autoloc.com makes something very similar. But I couldn't find it on their website.
here is the video clip

I use to live in San Diego, definately some serious aftermarket nazi cops there. I bought a Japanese plate because South Carolina doesn't require a front plate, but I want to move it to the driver side instead of center.

I'm thinking that if you did a really nice job with an air brush and some stencils, you could paint a license plate directly on the face of the FMIC... If you did get nailed on that one, you would at least get an A for effort...
