Fun Times @ S.D. National Tour part 1

makofoto 03-18-2005 10:56 PM

Fun Times @ S.D. National Tour
We had a good time @ the San Diego National Tour last weekend. K.C. and Josh Sortor were there. Josh won STX for the 2nd straight weekend ... giving us another lesson in aggressive Suby driving. Our local Team Blew member, Jeff Barco, came in 2nd ... again. I think he closed the gap a couple of tenth ... but was still honored to come in 2nd to a Champ like Josh. Max Hayter, Team Blew, had another good STX showing coming in 4th.

Another Team Blew member, Mark Coleman/STI won STU in an exciting 2 day battle with his nemesis Rick Jung/EVO. In the last 3 months they've meet four times ... and each has won 2 events ... usually by a tenth of a second. They meet again this Sunday in a San Diego Championship event.

Everyone is looking forward to the Atwater National Tour event in April.

Lots of Photos HERE

KC "only" came in 9th sharing local Matt Kogan's lightly prepared DSP BMW. Karl Asseily was on FIRE ... driving Toby Larsson's well prepped 325is over five seconds faster (2 day total) then KC! It was cool to get to spend some time with KC ... he's nothing at all like his occasionally abrasive on-line personality! :D

Here he throws down his gloves in disgust after learning that he only beat MY total SM time by 2.5 seconds! (Karl was only 0.12 seconds slower then Vic Sias's awesome SM M3!)

I was the highest placed Suby in SM ... in 8th behind seven M3's! No surprise there. The new 245/40/17 Hoosiers and 15 mm spacer up front (5mm in back) gave me snap oversteer on Sat. (Work came up preventing me from participating in the Friday Test 'n Tune.) I added another degree of rear neg. camber (-3.0 now) and the car was transformed for Sunday. I was really gaining confidence in it but on my last lap over cooked the very corner that I knew I had to back off a bit. I'm going to start doing all of my practice on R tires. There is just too much difference between R's and Max street tires. :( You can brake so much later with R's!

KC - Welcome to getting schooled in DSP. ;) Join the club.
Patrick Olsen 03-19-2005 04:06 AM

Maybe if KC wasn't carrying around that spare tire he'd be faster, eh, fat man??

Man, I really need to get back to the mainland and some real competition. :(

Pat Olsen

PS - Boy, you SD boys sure run the cars close together on course - and all the same type of car, too! ;)
KC 03-19-2005 08:11 AM

Yeah, I was amazed how close they run....

People are saying that once the kid is born, I'll drop that excess weight really fast!

The owner of the BMW and I look at it this way... we were 1st and 2nd of non-V710 cars. :D We have the wrong engine (2.5L) and the others had 2.8 and 3.0L. Yikes!

zzyzx... you will need V710s on the car to have any hope... and I think an RS just isn't the car to have for the class... not after seeing these guys run. You have your work cut out for ya.

Mako, thanks for trying to hide my secret, I can't beleive you actually got it on film... I can't bend over due to the gut... I'm actually using the Force to pick UP my gloves in that pic. :D (I have a smirk on my face too... not disgusted at all... I think the car did very well for it's level of prep). ;)
scottvw13 03-19-2005 08:53 AM

Thanks for the great pics.

Any idea what tires and size Mark coleman is running in is STU STI?

Thanks!
makofoto 03-19-2005 10:54 AM

My buddy Mark is using 245/45/17 Azenis (ST-215). On his last lap ... he beat Richard Jung by short shifting into 3rd at two spots. Rick ... according to the results was using Kuhmos (MX's).

The 3rd place M3 was using new 255/40/17 Falken 615's.

The new Hoosier A3S05 will be out in April ... a sales person for Hoosiers told me that in tests with "heavy, high horsepower, rear wheel drive cars" (Vettes) ... the S05 achieved "parity" with the 710.
Storm 03-20-2005 12:59 AM

Well at least we'll be on the right tires......Hopefully other changes will be of benefit as well..... we have a disgustingly fast E30 to catch. I seriously hope we didn't just turn our car into a 2 wheeling menace with the new shoes....

I was gonna mention the winter weight......but I have zero room to talk... There is no "clydesdale class" in autocross for me to hide in...dammit!!!

Sorry to digress, but I notice a lot of you guys have the "Subaru" logo magnetic - where did you get them?

Hope to see you guys at the Denver Tour in July! - STX 86 - ready to be spanked sir!! ; ) :p
KC 03-20-2005 11:33 AM

The Black subaru logo is handed out in the Tech shed. The black/white/blue sticker replaces the old blue/white yellow ones.

mako,
Looks like a good time! :)
DILLIGAF Racing 03-20-2005 12:47 PM

I'm noticing alot of cars with tape covering the front air dam. Is that to protect the car from cones or is it somehow causing downforce like they do with NASCAR?
KC 03-20-2005 12:53 PM

The tape over our BMW is to hold the foglights in when you hit a cone. That generation is notorious for popping/breaking forglights when hitting them.. and you don't want glass/foglight parts strewn on the course, but it's illegal to remove them. :) And yes, protect the paint too.

--kC
DILLIGAF Racing 03-20-2005 01:26 PM

ok, cool. Just curious if people were doing that kind of stuff
jcroy66 03-20-2005 05:28 PM

Ah yes, the good ole E36 foglights. Both of the foglights on my 93 cracked from the notorious "turn them on, get them nice and hot, and then drive through a puddle". Grr. And then the remains of one of them did indeed shatter (and leave glass all over the place) after I hit a cone. Only damage (other than cone scuffs) that I've suffered at an autocross to date...

heh, you should have seen Mattucci in AK. smoking fast. stupid fast, really. poor Pat had no chance, even with his m4d tyt3 drifto style :p
zzyzx... you will need V710s on the car to have any hope...
Uh, yeah. Single biggest change for the better on the ESP car. It's not very close, IMO. The SO5 is still up in the air at this point, but even if it's fast I doubt it will last as long as the V710s.
TyrannoSullyRex 03-21-2005 03:12 PM
heh, you should have seen Mattucci in AK. smoking fast. stupid fast, really. poor Pat had no chance, even with his m4d tyt3 drifto style :p
And I'm in the same region as Teucci, in DSP no less. It makes for a good goal to have though, I (and my co-driver) are about 1-1.5 seconds off of him all the time. It was a really good day when I got to within .5 second, then I found out that the tires were old and the last two runs (out of four) were on cords.

When you have a DSP car on pace with a very well driven Z06 (Strelnieks) then, damn.
KC 03-21-2005 03:12 PM
heh, you should have seen Mattucci in AK. smoking fast. stupid fast, really. poor Pat had no chance, even with his m4d tyt3 drifto style :p
Pat was tied for most cones.... 10 I beleive. :)
zzyzx 03-21-2005 04:05 PM

Yeah, V710s are on the list... This will be the 3rd year for DSP Nats and other than Subie contingency money, the upsides are minimal.

And how is it that Matteucci pulls an 87.699 in DSP when Strano pulled a 89.785 in ESP? That, IMO is beyond the "he's a good driver" argument.

Oh an Pat, don't worry man, you'll get the RS dialed in and make up that 7.5 second gap. ;)

- Steve
10th Warrior 03-21-2005 04:39 PM

it gets worse, Steve. Matteucci was in first heat, ESP was in 2nd. maybe instead of sending the rally cars to BSP, it should just read BMW E36 (all) :) Strano and Jorgenson were definitely not sandbagging ;)
When you have a DSP car on pace with a very well driven Z06 (Strelnieks) then, damn.
or, to put it another way, faster then John Thomas (you know, the other JT in auto-x ;) ) in FP.
KC 03-21-2005 05:47 PM
And how is it that Matteucci pulls an 87.699 in DSP when Strano pulled a 89.785 in ESP? That, IMO is beyond the "he's a good driver" argument.
It's interesting to see some of the results coming out this year, from those that were in Street Touring the past couple years... some of the good drivers that switched to R's are being really, really quick.

Another case of this, in addition to Matteucci was DSP in SD with Karl Asseily... Both BMWs from STX going into DSP and just taking names and kicking ass.

What is it? Street tires force you to be smoother with the inputs then when you go to Rs, you're already used to feeling the limits of the tire? This might take some looking into over the course of the year as people go from ST to R-Compounds. :)

--kC
zzyzx 03-21-2005 05:57 PM

... or means that the 2.8L (E36) and 3.0L (E46, IS300) RWD cars in DSP don't belong in DSP. Plenty of data to support this going back the last two years. Much more than the argument against rally cars in ESP at this point. This certainly applies to all the new 3s with 255 HP as well as the IS300 replacement making about the same HP.

Well I drove like crap too and it was the first real event in the car with R's. I threw away runs on both days that would have had me in the 46sec range. Oh well, that's not as bad as the new I got from Brians Codrive. He said that there is a e-mail that just went out that said the v710 will not be coming out this year in a 245/40-17. I hope this was a mistake or misinfomation. I called Kumho today too find out. If so, I might have to break down and get some SO5's when they come out.

I see in that BMW's future being moved to BSP if not ESP. Heck, Brian was faster then FP.

It is my understanding that all the top ESP Pony cars were having troubles there. Strano was without ABS; Jorgenson and Merideth had corded tires on Sunday. At least that's the way I heard it. It would take more than just driving to get pummeled by DSP that bad...
10th Warrior 03-23-2005 03:48 PM

Strano's ABS was getting finicky on Sunday. He said it really didn't have an effect though. Jorgenson had a trouble-free weekend AFAIK. Merideth had some broken suspension components on Saturday, but had it fixed for Sunday.

Mattuccei was simply flying. maybe we'll see DSP consistently faster then ESP this year. dunno, but certainly in the realm of possiblity.
AUTOwrXER 03-23-2005 04:32 PM

But by 2 seconds? Nobody is good enough to outdrive Strano by that margin. I'm just glad that Navid wasn't there. Otherwise, there would be more "proof" that the rally cars don't belong
10th Warrior 03-23-2005 05:03 PM

maybe you're looking at it from the wrong direction. instead of assuming that ESP was slower then it should be, I think DSP was simply faster, due to a combination of great driving and a car that was working very well. Strano and Jorgenson definitely weren't sandbagging. their gap to Strelnicks is about right. the oddball result is DSP. maybe in 06 BSP will read, BMW E36 (all) ;)
KC 03-23-2005 05:20 PM

Same thing happened out in SD... DSP was blazingly fast also.
AUTOwrXER 03-23-2005 05:26 PM

Has anyone seen a copy of the PAX results?
zzyzx 03-23-2005 06:01 PM

And, just to clear up a little confusion "DSP" was not fast, the top car/driver in DSP was. The E36 & IS300 have been outliers long enough to warrant re-classification.

At the San Diego Tour event ... Karl Asseily driving Toby Larsson's DSP '94 BMW 325is (I think it has the larger engine transplant) was first with a total of 98.18. There were nine more BMW's behind him.

Navid Kahangi won ESP with his '05 EVO with a 98.093 ... 1.572 seconds ahead of 2nd place Conor Botkin in his '02 Camaro .. then another Evo, another Camaro, another Evo ...

In talking with Toby, he still has the little motor....... 2.5? 2.8? All that is done is STX suspension mods and 285 tires. Matteucci's (sorry for spelling) is much further along in developement. (i.e. engine swap/allowable power mods...) Too bad the Lexus is not out there this year, could have made results interesting (its for sale I believe) With these cars performing so well, If they don't get moved, and STI/EVO's don't get moved, I lobby for 02-05 WRX in DSP! (despite faster DSP times that ESP lately, I think the WRX would have more of a chance against the lower HP guys.)
