gas cap scratching panels part 1

ptsmalls 12-23-2003 04:24 PM

gas cap scratching panels....
Am i the only one who has this problem....Everytime i get my tank filled the damn guy lets the cap hang by the plastic cord, scraping my fender! I think im gona cut the cord so he puts it somewhere else....probably on my roof...lol doesnt really apply to the rest of u who can pump ur own gas i guess.....sux for me
Calimoxo2 12-23-2003 04:27 PM

You could get some of the clear 3M stuff they put on the hood for stone chips and make a protected area under the gas cap........
drees 12-23-2003 05:20 PM

I always hang the cap over the latch on the door to keep it from banging on the paint below the filler.

I remember reading some threads a long time ago that the door was actually designed to hold the gas cap, but I never could figure it out or they changed the design of the door for 2003 or wagons.
03WRXMA 12-23-2003 05:27 PM

My 03 sedan gas door holds the cap fine

Pump your own damn gas! Thats the best solution.

Must be a sedan thing because my 03 wagon doesn't have a place for the gas cap. I just hang it by the latch so it doesn't touch the paint.

And yeah, pump your own gas. :D
ptsmalls 12-23-2003 06:46 PM

its illegal in NJ!
lupohki 12-23-2003 06:46 PM

STi doesn't have a gas cap holder .. not that i see. But I've never someone else pump the gas before, so I'm careful with the placement of the cap.
trehlo 12-24-2003 12:52 AM

don't be a suzy, just pump it yourself dude.

on a side note, i will be replying to all of your threads with my kid tested, mother approved sarcasm

skinart76 12-24-2003 01:00 AM

Yeah, I always make sure the cap hangs below the quarter panel before letting it go gently.:p

ptsmalls 12-24-2003 08:46 AM

yea...i hate nj gas stations....listen to this story, makes u loveee all people. I got lost in the middle of no where with the gas light on....but my saving glory was running out of gas right into a station....but the pump wouldnt reach around the car. so i tried to start the car and turn, i got half way and got stuck in the snow/ice. so with my cast on my broken hand i asked the attendents to help, and i quote "its not my job". I almost mauled the guy as i continued to try and push my car out of the snow........10 other people at the gas station wouldnt help me, just looked at me......i must have told off like 15 people for not helping. finally after 35 min of pushing i get the car out and then the guy wouldnt fill my tank cause i called the attendent many key words......damn i didnt know he could understand english that good. lol i thought im gona kill this guy.....finally after some fake apologizing he pumped my gas........moral of this story.......pay attention to your gas milage and somtimes the light comes on and you dont have as much as u think u have....IM SO RETARTED!....lol
Samirr76 12-24-2003 03:13 PM

how do u get an WRX stuck in the snow?

were all the other fwd and rwd cars stuck too?
theJohnson 12-25-2003 01:08 AM

i think the latch was designed to hold the cap. the teather is long enough for the cap to dangle freely without touching the car. and that little notch in the latch holds the teather. i been doing it this way since i boutght my car and hasnt failed me yet.
Law: You cannot pump your own gas. All gas stations are full service and full service only.
Country: USA
State: New Jersey

Explanation: Oregon and New Jersey are the only two states in the United States that require attendents to pump gas at gas stations. There are many arguments for it, but many are not very well substantiated. It is claimed that it should not matter because gas prices are lower in these two states. Insurance costs for gas stations go down slightly if a "qualified attendent" is pumping the gas, but they must also pay for the cost of hiring an extra worker. Combined with varying taxes on gasoline between states, its true affect on gas price is anyone's guess. It is also claimed that having your own gas pumped for you is superior because drivers don't have to brave the elements and fiddle with the gas pump and their gas cap. With the exception of a few elderly and disabled persons, most people are perfectly capable of getting out of their car in a covered area for five minutes and place a nozzle in their gas tank. Another argument is that by forcing consumers to go to gas stations with attendents, it helps out the job market. Opponents argue that employing these people is merely a waste of money, and if jobs are needed, other opportunities could easily be created (i.e. city beatification). Regardless of the truth behind the matter, Oregon and New Jersey are keeping this law on the books and fully enforcing it.

must be, my wagon doesnt have it either :(
CrazyMike13 12-25-2003 01:26 AM

It is illegal to pump gas in Oregon and New Jersey because after it stops pumping a lot of people try to get the last little bits they can by pumping again and again in little spurts after it keeps stopping. Doing that releases quite a bit of gas in the air and therefore bad for the environment. The gas attendants are trained not to do that. So, instead of simply letting the public know about this frequent problem, they hire a bunch of attendants to keep it "in check". Therefore, all gas stations in these states are full service.

Everytime I've been in Jersey and had gas pumped, the attendant would always pump some more in there after it stopped to round out the dollar amount. Usually I find they try to end it at .75 so you'll be more inclined to leave them a .25 tip.
CrazyMike13 12-25-2003 02:28 AM

There's always a few unethical people out there. I can't imagine they bother to make an additional effort to find and hire any credible people simply to pump gas.

A clearer pic of just the door, you can see the notch where the tether pin fits in place. Subaru obviously intended this to be used to hold the cap, they just didn't bother to tell us :)
mesaro 12-28-2003 03:46 PM

My cap must've came retarded and didn't have that... but the door does have the lip for it
kenchan 12-29-2003 01:43 AM

that cord thing in the winter is stiff and my gas cap flings out
of that little lip.

i just let it hang without touching anything while i gas up
the car.

Here's a pic of the fuel filler door and cap on my 2003 WRX wagon. You can see how the gas cap "string" attaches differently to the cap from the pic from the 2002 sedan above.

I never noticed that little notch before, so I bought some of those 3M stick-on plastic hooks that people use for tidying up cords and such. I stuck one on the inside of the door. It's been two years now and it still works very well!
modvp 06-09-2004 07:57 AM

My 03 sedan's gas cap was exactly like this, and i placed the cap on the arm while i fill up.

is it possible to buy a wrx gas cap from the stealership and would it clip onto an RS door like that?
sirbryanclark 06-09-2004 06:21 PM

the whole deal with OR and NJ making it illegal to pump your own gas has NOTHING to do with topping off your tank or saftey... it is a state program to create jobs... Damn liberals... TOO MUCH GOVERNMENT!
Sauceboy01 06-09-2004 09:24 PM

IMPREZive 02 WRX 06-10-2004 12:42 PM

I've never heard of a pump jockey not topping off. In fact, some of them even add an extra dollar or so...even if it's already running down the side of your car! This is why I get out and pump my own gas. If they don't like it...arrest me.
VSGTS14 06-10-2004 03:42 PM

wow...i never knew that...awesome
MikeWRX-NJ 06-10-2004 05:51 PM

yea i've tried once to pump my own, the guys started yelling in some language i didnt understand. so i gave up...

then some other time this ass hat put in 87... and myself being the ass hat didnt watch until 5gallons were put in... i yelled at the guy for 93. instead of stopping the pump he started arguing with me that there's no difference between 87 and 93. (on a stg4 car theres a HUGE difference)  i told him "you stop the pump and i'm outta here. i'm not paying.

i had to grandma the car for like 3 days after that episode.

I just noticed this thread... For those of us who don't have the tether pin, the gas cap will hook on to the fuel door the opposite way of how Mulder is showing it. I figured this out last night during my first fillup.

Pics are too big to post (just reformatted my HD and don't have any image editing stuff) but here's a link to them:

STi Gas Cap on Fuel Door Pics

And yes, that is secure. On mine you can grab the cap and pull the door with it.
Supreme Oppressor 06-10-2004 08:50 PM

It may be illeagle to pump your own gas, but i'm sure you could remove your own gas cap.
subaru mike 06-10-2004 09:14 PM

I try to go to the same place all the time and have tipped him a few times he never over fills and when there is some gas that gets on the car he wipes if off them wipes it clean a second time with water, also I mentioned to him to please not let the cap scratch my car he was like sure no problem, that is all that I can recommend in NJ at least he does not scratch up my car either.
SabreKhan 06-10-2004 09:35 PM

Seriously... Yankees need to learn some manners. In Alabama (my place of origin), we still have full-service gas stations. And not because of some bleeding-heart liberal need to give a high-schooler a job, but because in the country there are still people who just want their gas pumped by some local kid, who they will afterwards tip a dollar or two out of courtesy. And if you say, "Now, Billy, you be careful with that gas cap and don't let it scratch the paint," Billy will be careful with it. And he'll wash your windows and check your tire pressure and your oil level, no extra charge. And, at the same gas station, if you're so inclined, you can pump your own gas at the self-service pumps. Hell, I was in this po-dunk town between Tuscaloosa and Mobile somewhere one time and the old guy pumping gas was the guy that owned the joint. And he refused a tip. We might catch flak for being backwards down here, but Southern hospitality does have its merits.
Sauceboy01 06-10-2004 09:43 PM

pump your own gas you lazies!
MikeWRX-NJ 06-10-2004 10:28 PM

that must be nice, you know, to have people who pump your gas speak english...

see what people don't understand is, there are no full service gas stations in NJ like that. no washing the windows, etc. you're basically just having some dude pump your gas, and he usually sucks at it.

and like i said, if you try to get out of your car they freak out. bottom line, jersey sucks.

Brad Nely 06-10-2004 10:34 PM

Can't be as bad as me, I left my door open once and it dangled the whole drive to work on the freeway, dulling the pain the whole way. Little wax buffed it right out.
SabreKhan 06-14-2004 04:26 PM
