Here it is, the video of us racing with ICY. After I got by them, I gapped them by multiple positions.

great driving!!

Man that ICY Wagon has got some legs.

That broken rotor sounded terrible!

looks like you were really out breaking him. Nice driving, nice lines too!
spazegun2213 07-04-2006 04:29 PM

WOW brian, that was some GREAT racing!! It looked like you all were a little down on HP. even that cobalt grew legs on the straight. Still i think your braking and cornering is a force to be reconened with!! You were so close to him everal times and it looked like other than that one bump it was all very perfessional.

Nice move on the inside!

wow.. umm damn that rotor failure sounded BAD! do you have any pictures of it?

Lemme guess, that was rosenblum driving.

If you had their motor you would have lapped them in the amount of time you were following them. Great Job on the race and being faster everywhere other then the straights!

Thanks alot. We will have our motor sorted out for the Alabama event and have very high hopes. We were faster than almost every car in the turns this weekend. Even the race leading Cobalt that I was following after I came out of the pits had nothing on us in the turns. We know that car is a podium contender, and our goals are nothing less than that at Barber!

Pretty scary place to destroy a rotor considering that is the fastes straightaway to a 90 degree right turn. Definitely not the most dangerous place thanks to ample runoff and a huge gravel pit, but I am sure you still needed to check your underwear...lol

Yeah, every lap @ turn 1 I kept having flashbacks of the 2005 13 car pile-up in Speed TC. Looks to be much more "friendly" driving in GrandAm.
Yeah, every lap @ turn 1 I kept having flashbacks of the 2005 13 car pile-up in Speed TC. Looks to be much more "friendly" driving in GrandAm.
I think that the biggest reason for the "friendly" driving is just the format of the race. TC is a sprint race, In Grand Am, races are won and lost by being consistent and staying out of trouble. Good pit strategy is the best way to pass a closely competitive car, that way you decrease the risk of contact and taking yourself out of the race.

That being said, there are still plenty of team that do not understand that. Hence our wreck in practice, and the 3 car roll over in turn 1 during the Cup race. That is why I love Grand Am, it rewards consistency and clean driving over the sprint format.

Curious to know what it would take to get that level of racing.

Your car has a very well sorted suspension I really admire it behaver in transitional point; right to left turn. And of course excellent driving. Legacy guys definitely have power disadvantage.

Jose
I started with NASA HPDE's, and got my license with about 6 track days in my street car. Here is a brief list of where I went from there in chronological order...

2003 - '87 CRX NASA Endurence Series - 1 race (4 hour), 1 win
2003 - '87 CRX NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill - 1'st in 12 hour, ended up 4'th after wreck in 23rd hour
2004 -Formula Renault 1600 - Test w/Paladin Motorsports, envited to run Formula TR but could not find the funding
2004 - '91 Integra NASA Honda Challenge H4 - 10 races, 8 wins
2005 - '91 Integra/'95 Del Sol NASA Enduro - 2 race, 1 win, 2 podiums
2004-05 - '02 WRX NASA USTCC - 10 races, 3 wins, 4 poles, 7 podiums, Finished 2nd in points in 2005

And now I have 3 Grand Am races under my belt with our best finish of 6'th at Laguna Seca. It has taken A LOT of sacrifices to get where I am, both finacial and personal. I am lucky enough to have tons of support from my family, and have surrounded our team with an amazing amount knowledge from all of our sponsors. I have high hopes for the future, hopefully including a win in 2006 in Grand Am Cup!

Pacobeagle 07-05-2006 11:24 PM

Definetly an impressive resume.

As for me, I'm just starting. I've been running(most of) the entire season of my local regions autox events. So far, for the races I've attended, I'm undefeated. I'm 4th overall for PAX for the year. I'm slowly but surely getting sponsors so that I can attend this years Natl's in Topeka. Hopefully, I will learn enough to come back for the '07 season and at least trophy.

It's amazing how much of an intial hit the Cobalt's took when they had to go back to stock exhaust. I guess the GM guys have figured out some new source of power seeing as they were able to lead the race at one point.

I also would not rule out the sandbagging factor. GM knew that they were on the radar, and if they were able to tune around it, they would not go right back out and set fast lap. Then Grand Am would restrict them even further. The political chess game is a pretty interesting (and frustrating if you are not on the right side of it) element of professional racing.

Hit it right on, most people don't understand this fact and get frustrated with teams running their favorite car and not going right out and smoking the competition. When in a series that has a lot of manufacturer support in other makes/models you have to lay low as long as you can to get enough allowances to have a chance at being cosistently up near the front. Unfortunately, most times funding runs out before this comes to realization. Hopefully you guys are able to stick with it and keep getting closer to the podium. With Subaru getting involved in Grand Am it really helps GOTO even if they don't give support $$ because the series knows there is manufacturer interest and would like to keep them involved. Best of luck!

Joel Gat, 1.8L 07-08-2006 04:05 AM

Hello,
What rotor was that by the way..... :)
-mike
As we said before, we can't point the finger at the rotor and say it was the rotor's fault. There is a possibility that something else, whether it was the brake caliper's slider bracket or even the knuckle itself, was bent and that put a huge stress on the rotor, which snapped the rotor. It's highly unlikely that any rotor, even one made of glass or plastic, would fail at turn 2 of the first lap...

Joel
cdvma 07-08-2006 09:58 PM

i know a few things about hte ICY car, but im not sure if im allowed to comment on it. :(

where is the video of the GOTO car getting passed back by the ICY wagon?..

we could watch this on SPEED right now, but the damn race is being inturrupted for the announcement that an F1 driver is taking a step down to Nascar :(

wish you could post up a video of the full race, maybe cutting out a few laps that show no action and caution laps etc.. i wonder if ICY will put a camera in their car... that would also be cool.

+1 :p

BTW, the rotors on the GOTO car were loaded with stress and heat cracks throughout the rotor surface and vents, plus they were slotted and cross-drilled to boot. All of the crack led to or from a drill hole. The GOTO guys survived one heck of an inccident, one right after another which I have to give them credit for. In the end, both cars finished the race and will meet again at Barber motorsports park in two weeks. Both cars will be all sorted out and give the non-Subies a run for their money. Good luck guys and see you there.....

Jay,

Are you participating in the same thread we are?! I don't see any crossdrilling, and therefore, no cracks leading from a drill "whole". In addition, the rotors had very little time on them, so I doubt the existence of "heat cracks throughout the rotor surface and vents."

Your point?

Murray 07-11-2006 01:07 PM

^^ there appears to be drill holes in the slots of the rotor

either way... it was a catastrphic failure, if it was just a random occurance, its kinda nice that it happened at a slower speed and didnt affect any other cars.

most likely it was caused by something that wasnt seen during the previous repair. i doubt a rotor would fail after just a few turns, without some other underlaying problem.

someone call the CSI department if you want all the answers, either way, it failed, the problem was fixed and the car got back out on the track to race, giving us some nice video to watch. :thumbs up:

im still pissed that coverage of the race was inturrupted by the damn press conference :furious:

Current camera battery technology limits how much of the race we can record :), but I don't know how exciting the "pass" would look. It was pretty much just me sitting there at the head of the pits acting very frustrated as the pit marshall held me to let the field go by.

In a rush to get in our driver change on a late yellow, we didn't get close enough to the pace car before stopping. Even though we had got our pit stops down great for this event, nothing can beat bad timing. Held until the entire field passed by, we went a lap down in the final 12mins of the race. I was told to drive the car like a bat our of hell after that. I got 5 cars in the last 3 green laps we were to get. Only 3 for position, but what are you gonna do?

Gary Sheehan - i have never seen that style rotor before either. in theory it would work.. but for track use, i would personally stick to a solid rotor, just because of the abuse the braking system sees.

Just seems like a very odd idea to me to put a stress riser in the thinnest part of the rotor material. Why WOULDN'T cracks originate there?!
