Hood Dampers WTH?

God why the hell are hood dampers for the Impreza so damn expensive? It dosent seem like it takes tat much work to make.
| Hank3 | 10-22-2005 11:17 PM |
Redline ones are only ~$60 shipped. Not ridiculously expensive IMO
| Burton4g63 | 10-22-2005 11:18 PM |
yea but I heared that you have to drill holes, im not doin that. lol
| Hank3 | 10-22-2005 11:21 PM |
Meh, not a big deal really - very straightforward and easy to install.
| 2phless | 10-22-2005 11:29 PM |
I installed the redlines about a year ago. Still makes me happy to this day not having a hood-prop. Great mod. Paint matching the hinge-points before install makes it look a lot better too.
If you are not willing to drill 8, small, hidden holes in your car, perhaps a forum without the word "modification" in the name would be more to your liking.

I thought they were really expensive too at first ($125 for the Tein's) but then again compared to the 200+ for the original Prova ones and I thought that was a bargain :p They're really quality-made units though and it just beats having a hood prop by a billion times... better looks, easier to open the hood, doesn't get in the way when you're working on the car, etc.
| sick1.8t | 10-23-2005 12:13 AM |
i made a set using passat rear hatch dampers. it took me about 3 hours to make all the custom brackets and stuff.
let me tell you, it was totaly worth it the first time i opened the hood.

I'm going with the Teins I think..Seems like a quick install.
| Thumper23 | 10-23-2005 01:31 AM |
hell, $110 for the Teins and no drilling, seems like a good deal to me
| garie | 10-23-2005 02:52 AM |
to those who have them do you think they are worth the money?
worth it? any regrets?
I think they are cool, and it would give more space when I work on the engine...but I would rather spend that money on performance mods.

The Tein units are bolt ons, but use the fender and hood holes to bolt on... Some feel this puts them in 'the way' while working on the car...
The Redline units require drilling, but tuck the lifts closer to the cowl... Giving you more working room...
Both items are some of the least expensive hood lifts on the market, but have excellent quality...
I personally have the Tein units... :)

I would pay the money for the teins, cuz i hate not having hood dampers, but i would rather get some go fast bits first

In my case I need them. I have a completly custom turbo setup. Where the hood prop would store at I have intercooler piping. So i have to take the hood prop on and off when Im working on the engine. PITA!!! So I dont know why you wasted your time even posting that????

everything we do is unnecessary. We dont need to mod our cars, we want to. We dont need to upgrade our turbo, we want to. We dont need to prop up the hood with a peice of metal, so we want to prop it up with a hydraulic piston. Is that a problem?

its more of a convenience than a bling factor. Its cool to subaru guys cuz they dont have them on, and its just something that recently came up, so im sure most never even thought about it, and now theres something to make things a whole lot easier.

| Puguglies | 10-27-2005 02:36 PM |
I bought them and I'm pleased with it. Real easy to install, and I think it's overall a good thing to have. Be careful when you install the bolt into the fender, don't over torque it.

You need to try to live with an MR2 Spyder for a while where your only turnk is in the front of your car and requires three hands to load stuff into if you don't use the hood prop. Then you will see the inportance of these.
You can make your own for $40.

| kunfuzion | 10-27-2005 04:00 PM |
question, does the shaft of the damper point to the bottom (fender) or the top (hood)? i've seen both and wondered if it matters.
| subieworx | 10-27-2005 04:16 PM |
Shouldn't matter as long as there is enough room.

For how simple the device is and because some sets sell for 60... yeah...
I've seen brand new chinese crap for 30.00 a set... you get what you pay for though. Still four sets of those will prob last just as long if not longer then a 120.00 set.

Well maybe someone wants to turn this into a useful thread where we list what options there are and rough costs of each. Of course including a DIY version as well.
We can start with what JnJ offers (rough estimates on shipped prices).
Redline Standard: $50 (requires drilling and riveting)
Redline Elite: $110 (requires drilling and riveting)
Tein: $125 (factory bolt on locations used)
From others??
Vision: $?? (no info)
NRG: $90 (no info)
DIY: ?? (??)

i was told the hood stays up with just one damper. Can anyone confirm this?

It will wear out quite a bit faster just using one than two.

I can see how they appeal, but how hard is it to "disconnect" the dampers, when you want the hood ALL the way back? They look like they'd be in the way, for example, when working around turbo & DP.
I usually just lift the hood and hook it all the way open with a bungie cord, suspended from the garage door. Works for me.

Yeah it will stay in place with just one, I wouldn't recommend keeping it like that for a long period of time.

Info on NRG updated in my quote. StaticX is showing a normal price of $130 BTW with a group buy price that closed at $115. So I would like to know where some other place is that sells them for $90 shipped. It also appears they are going to be available in carbon fiber trim, but I am not sure if that is extra.
It looks like Redline has added a 'Plus' model which throws in some of the Elite hardware for the standard struts. I have also added the Prova's to the list.

Offset, just an FYI, our prices have changed as of October first 2005.
But not by much...
Redline Standard units are 59.95 shipped to the lower 48 states.
Redline Elite Stainless Steel units are 109.95 shipped to the lower 48 states.
Tein units are 135.00 shipped to the lower 48 states...
Just wanted to correct the pricing... :)
We do not carry the NRG units...
Here are some more facts:
The Tein units are made in Japan (true JDM ;) )
The Tein units are bolt on.
The Redline units are made in the USA and come with a parts warranty of 2 years for the Standard and 4 years for the Elite. The only manufactuterer to offer a parts warranty for an item like this...
Redline units require some drilling to install.

the Vision ones are ~$135
Also.. the Redline ones are the only ones that are even remotely 'recommended' to work on aftermarket hoods that I've seen
NRG's website says not to..
Anyone with experience with Vision or NRG hood dampers on aftermarket CF hoods? I'd really rather not have to drill into my new hood to put on hood dampers. :(

There are all sorts of holes on the bottom of your hood--drilling three tiny ones on each side isn't going to hurt it. If you take them off and don't like the holes that no one will ever see, you can fill them/paint them.
| crashtest sonny | 11-01-2005 05:49 PM |
hell yea they're worth it. i didnt even need to drill mine. its so nice to just pop the hood and leave it up..instead of getting that long rod to hold it up.
