Ideas for exterior modifications to my 2004 WRX?

I'm looking for ways to make the appearance of my WRX more aggressive and unique (relative to stock I guess). What are some ways to do this without spending too much?
This is what I have i mind: STi side splitters, painted side skirts.
I'm considering installing an STi hood scoop but not too sure. What is the general opinion on doing this to a WRX? Ricey? I also love the look of the fog light covers but I think I love using my fog lights more. :( I wish they'd make mesh fog light covers for the 2004's....or do they? That'd be ideal since I'd still be able to use my fog lights and during the day, it'd almost look like they're not there.
All I have so far are 17's, 35% tints, and I've lowered the front with Tein H-techs.
I'll consider all ideas so let's hear em. If you have pics, that'd be excellent. Thanks!

You think the STi hoodscoop would be ricey? Most of the things you already have done to your car are rice (new wheels, tint, and a lowering). If you were to do any of the mods listed I'd say go with the STi side splitters and/or the STi hoodscoop. I think tint is a bit of rice, but I have tint of my car. It's one of the few ricey mods you can do that most people like. I've got 20 all around with limo on the sunroof.
By the way, does anyone know the best place to buy pre-painted STi hoodscoops on the cheap (ie; replica)?

Wow, that is extremely cheap. But they only paint in silver and wrblue. I need Java Black Pearl.

You don't think the painted side skirts is a good idea? My plan was to paint it myself using paint from www.paintscratch.com. There's a thread on this forum that explains how to do it. If I bought the STi hood scoop, I'd paint it myself too. Let me know if you need the link or you can just visit paintscratch.com, select your model, year, and color.

I sort of agree with tints being somewhat ricey. It does look cool though. Not sure if it really helps keep the car cool, especially if you're leaving your car in the heat for hours. I used to drive an Altima with 20% tints. When I first bought my WRX, I felt so naked and exposed. I feel a little better after getting my tints :)

I guess painted sideskirts wouldn't look bad, I thought you meant two-tone. The paintscratch.com ordering system looks nice. If you find that thread that explains how do it correctly let me know, thanks!

$185 painted and shipped sounds ok. How much would it usually cost to ship the hood scoop??? subaruwrxparts.com sells them for $120 I think (not including shipping)

I would probably do this only if I got a front and rear lip. My wrx is black so the side skirts match decently enough.

I just got my sti hood scoop and I love it :)
I also have painted sides, tint, and wheels. I think cars look much better with tint. I dont know who decided that was a ricey mod
mirror/colored (not black) tint on the other hand.... :o

I always thought rice was also when a car mods the exterior to look like another car (in this case - me adding the side splitters and hood scoop from the STi). I think those two (splitters and hood scoop) might not be as ricey as getting the STi spoiler. Those are subtle changes (including painted side skirts) compared to the spoiler.
Classic example of rice is when someone puts an emblem on their car (e.g. STi, GT-R, Type-R, etc). But hey, if you love your car, do whatever you want with it.

Why not? Because some random dude on the internet said it was "rice"?
Most of the time on this website, if someone referrs to something as "rice", then the surrounding sentence probably consists of some other rediculous opinion that doesn't make sense to any logical thinking person.
If there was a valid reason to call tinting a car, lowering it, and putting rims on it "rice", then I would be more likely to accept it. However, I see no valid reasoning whatsoever.
Do what you want man, it's your car, not his.

Where I come from,
Rice = Making your car hideously ugly, putting clear taillights onto it, unpainted body kits, incorrect badging (ie. putting Cobra emblems on a V6 mustang. it seems to be acceptable to have STi emblems on a reg WRX to a certain point [fog light covers, grille etc], which I don't necessarily agree with, but it doesnt seem to be considered rice in the subaru community)
The only way I would consider tint, wheels and springs to be ricey is if:
a) the springs cause the car to drag on the ground due to it being so low
2) the tint is a mirror/colored tint (IMO only black looks good, colored tint is fugly and so is mirrored tint)
and d) the wheels in question are 22" chrome wheels that look like giant snowflakes
Your opinion may vary, but like I said where I come from that is pretty much the generally accepted definition of "rice". :o

Rice is a term so overly used that you shouldn't even take the time to think about it anymore, people call stock cars rice now. Whatever you do to your car just make sure you get high quality parts/labor. Buy what you want but make sure it will last and will fit properly, everything else is subjective and you shouldn't waste time to think if some guy on an internet forum thinks it's "rice". It's your car, you have to drive it and look at it daily, **** everyone else.

You sir, get 3 dancing bananas.
Red04WRX, the way I see it, putting Cobra badges on a v6 Mustang is stupid because the car clearly isn't a Cobra. However, STi is not only a model of a car, it represents products and things of that nature.
I also think it's innacurate to call American cars "rice". Rice refers to Jap cars/bikes. American cars should be t3h corn.

True, but I wouldnt take a STI emblem from an STI and put it on my WRX. I realize STI makes other stuff too, but I wouldnt want anything on my car to actually say STI on it just because someone who doesnt know any better would look at my car and say, "Why does your car say STI on it, it's not an STI." It's bad enough I have people talking schmutz about my exhaust, etc, etc. :o
I realize it's an OK thing to do and all, have STI labeled parts on your car. but I couldn't ever do it.

Sorry about the confusion guys. I wasn't calling anything ricey. I was just trying to explain what I THOUGHT was considered rice. I actually don't mind any of those mods as long as they look clean.
It is damn hilarious though. Every time I drive by Lawrence, MA, I can't go one block without seeing a Honda with a different color front lip or an entire body kit. I always get a kick out of seeing slammed Civics with the WORST camber problems.
I have to say though, I HAVE seen some beautiful Civics that are modded properly. But like I said before, it may or may not be considered rice. If you love it, then be proud of it.
...so let's get back to the point eh? Anymore suggestions on exterior mods? Ricey or not, let's hear em ;)

well, I'm going about my exterior mods with mostly stock parts as well so here's my 05 rex for your reference. I have the OEM replica rear aprons on order so once they arrive, my ride will be complete. BTW, I'm painting my wheels this weekend a light gunmetal color (darker than anthracite but shinier and with more of the satin finish) so hopefully the finished product will look nice. IMO, the STi hoodscoop is HUGE!

So I finally coughed up some money for some exterior mods. Here is my list and hopefully they come in at relatively the same time so I can have a huge project day:
1. Spray Paint from Paintscratch.com ($70 - for painting my skirts)
2. STi Side Splitters ($100 shipped from a member on NASIOC)
3. STi Fog Light Covers ($120 - subaruwrxparts.com)
4. STi Hood Scoop ($185 shipped and painted from j-spectuning.com)
It'll almost be a brand new car in a couple of weeks :)

thanks i appreciate that. :) I'm more of a subtle guy when it comes to the style of my cars. Once I get the rear aprons on and have the wheels painted anthracite, I'm done for the exterior (except for maybe STi HID's within a month or so). They're actually for sale (my headlights) for $350 - the going bid now. BUT, I have to confirm that my HID deal will go through before selling these.

Your 05 lights came stock prepainted with the interior plastic on the 'reflectors' mostly gunmetal except the parts right around the bulbs, didn't they?
Im jealous. My 04 lights are 'all' reflective material. Bleh. I wonder if you paint over top of chrome coating the paint will stay on, or will it chip off??
In other note.. your car has convinced me that this lip may be preferably to the greddy. esp after several other threads i have read mentioned the greddy being 'too low' as well.

Fiki - I don't understand how new wheels, tint, and lowering can be considered as rice. So you're saying an STi owner who buys new Volks, darkens their windows, and throw on some Pinks, they are just like that CRX with the Type R badge, primer paintjob, and 14" spinner hubcaps. Not sure how you're gettin at rice.
WRX2K4 - There are a grip of STi owners who install JDM STi components. Still smell rice?
Red04WRX - Agreeeeed
MistaOctamopis - Agreeeed. This entire forum is like a high school. People join, and to be cool, we have to put others down and join in on the bandwagon. So while we pop zits in the mirror we can call out others for 'rice'. Rice doesn't mean anything anymore on these forums, let it go.
Nytmare - Sarcasm is hard as hell to read over the net. ROFL.
Diesel - She's friggin beautiful. Love the wheels and your customized lip.
MU5A5HI - I have a PSM with cleared headlights and I think the reflective gunmettally color is awesome on silver.

elijah25rs: Did you use the 'bake in the oven' method to clear your headlights? Im still working up the 'balls' to do that.

MU5A5HI - Baked. One of them leaked so I rebaked it and put in some extra caulk from the hardware store. Guess I was too sloppy the first time around. If you take your time and seal it up well. You shouldn't have anything to worry about. It's one of the best free mods you can do. Looks super good on PSM, very clean. The JDM STi Lip can be purchased through gruppe-s or Myles at RaceCompEngineering.

elijah25rs: Nobody is talking about rice anymore on this thread, so let's just drop it.
I would love to clear my headlights, but like a lot of others, I don't have the balls to bake it. If there's anyone in the area (Lowell, MA - Nashua, NH - Boston, MA) that has done it before on a 2004, I'd pay you to do it for me!
Since we're on the subject on lights, what bulb can I use to replace the rear turn signal? I've tried a few different ones already and the bulb itself is either too big, or the plug won't fit in the socket. Can someone get me the exact bulb type/number?

wrx2kblue:
Just voicing my opinion, didn't know I couldn't do that here.
As for clearing your headlights. There is absolutely noway you could mess this up unless you were blind. Remove headlights, unscrew the black screws, bake em for 15 mins, stick a screwdriver in there and pry em apart. It really is quite fun once you get into it. Trust me, this is my first car and I'm a noobie at 17 years of age. If I can do it, most everyone else could.
As for the bulb, if you have a manual, it should tell you in the appendix which bulb size it is. Mines downstairs and I just dont feel like gettin up, if you don't have you manual, I'll look later.

WRX2K4Blue: I have the same fears about baking my lights. I may give it a try anyhow soon, once this damn class i am up at 12:30am writing a paper for is over! Right now i cant commit to doing anything for more than a few hours.
Anyhow if anyone in Virginia has done it, drop me a line.
I find all the descriptions saying its 'really easy' but then the next thing i read is that it leaks and you have to add more sealant. Scary. I dont have a good way to check for leaks other than put it on the car and wait for rain. by then its a little late.

Its not scary at all. I was sloppy cos I wanted to see it done fast and i missed a screw. Found it replaced it and added more caulk. Big deal.
