How difficult would it be to change all the dash/radio bulbs to a blue color? part 1

Jasno999 03-12-2002 07:16 PM

How difficult would it be to change all the dash/radio bulbs to a blue color?

I want to go with a blue color in my 2002 WRX. I have blue carbon fiber trim and I would like to go with that color for all the lighting in the car. I was wondering how difficult it would be to change all the bulbs behind the guages and the dash. Also what about the factory radio. Is it possiable to do???

I understand that you can put bulb condoms on all the bulbs or better yet just buy colored bulbs. But I want to know how difficult it is to do. I figure the dash is doable. Please let me know how hard it is and how to do it.

But I am mostly woried about the factory CD player that is green. Can this be changed to be a blue color?? How do you do that? How hard is it to do that?
imposter 03-12-2002 10:29 PM

the bulb condoms dont fade like the colored bulbs do, but they are not as bright. the colored bulbs will fade over time (about a week for me) I gave up on those after changing them out 3 times and switched to the condoms but had a hard time seeing the gauges. ive heard of people taking off the needles and sanding the backs of the faces, but that seems very risky to me, trying to get the needles back on. i accidentally broke the fuel needle off and it ended up costing me ~$60. To replace the bulbs you need to remove the screws holdig the bezel in place, take out the screws holding the cluster in,and unplugging the wire harnesses. Then just twist the bulbs out.

I already have reverse indiglo gauges and a blue head unit, but I would definetly be interested in changng the heater/vent control lights to blue....has anyone done this?
wrxlvr 03-13-2002 10:18 AM

I don't think anyone has done this. I'm pretty sure it's not a green bulb making stuff green, but it's a green goo on the inside of the buttons and back of your speedo etc. I wanted to change the color of my radio leds too, but talking to my friend who's an electrical engineer, he said the led parts can't be done (best we could do is a teal color - yuck). Good luck!
128d 03-13-2002 01:38 PM

There was one guy a while back who you could send your stock radio unit to and he would changet the bulbd to blue. They looked pretty good too. I think there might be green paint on the back of the units as well.
Jasno999 03-15-2002 07:11 AM

SO you guys are telling me that the radio is basically impossiable to change the color of anf the rest is easy but it just takes the decision of using either colored bulbs or condoms.

Are you guys sure there is no way to change the head unit color??? What size bulbs do I need for all the guages? Where can I get the bulb condoms?

I really want to go with a blue theme for my WRX...
wrxlvr 03-15-2002 10:24 AM

That mod is for the pre '02 cars. You are gonna have to find another option for your WRX.

I need some advice and help here.. Anybody??

Pull the trim peice off and and then take the knobs off. You will then need to pull the blck plastic face off and there will be to small bulbs. They have a green condom on them and I just pulled it off. Put blue bulb condoms on and reassemble. Does anyone no what size our dome light is?
BlackBeastie 03-15-2002 01:29 PM

i have taken the instrument cluster out of the WRX and you CANNOT change the color of the dash by changing the bulbs/condoms. The back of the gauges is painted with a color that gives it a green cast. You would need to remove your needles (not recommended) and sand all of that stuff off of the back of your gauge faceplate, if that would even work. My advice? If you want to change the color/look, there is a group buy going on for reverse indiglo gauges that look like pretty good qaulity or learn to live with the green.

I don't have a digi cam, but I will see what I can do.
Jasno999 03-17-2002 04:40 PM

That really sucks. I have gone with blue trim in my car and I purchaed blue neon lights for under the dash. I wanted to go with the blue look for the rest of the car cause it looks dumb with green and blue.. I guess I could buy green neons but I think that might looks stupid too. Plus I have after market guges in my middle cluster so if I wanted to do indiglow guages I would have to change those aftermarket autometer guages too...
armand1 03-17-2002 05:32 PM

Jasno,

For the HU, just replace the stock one with a better aftermarket one that has blue lighting. With that and aftermarket speakers, you'll be a lot happier with the sound, too.
Anglophile 03-17-2002 06:41 PM

Guys, check the current thread, "Making the cluster glow red at night".

I did this mod on my WRX, including the CD/tape player. The results were generally excellent. I painted my bulbs red, but I wouldn't be surprised if blue paint worked too. BTW, the yellow gauge needles glow a brilliant red at night with this mod.

The only downside, the light is taken from the bulbs at the back of the gauge cluster to the gauges at the front using clear plastic runners, the fiber optic cable principle I suppose. The runners for the small gauges are short, so they are brightly lit, the tach/speedo runners are long and very large, so they are not as bright, still the effect is good IMO. This could be cured by using brighter bulbs, anyone know how to find some?
Jasno999 03-20-2002 06:04 PM

My roomate told me that he has heard of some people changing the entire dash color. SO I know it can be done. We just need to figure out how they did it. We nned to find then and ask them. YOu guys post some stuff and see what you can find out.

I really want to go blue.

Yes, everything is blue! Factory gauges, radio, climate controls and the cruise and driving light buttons. I simply used dark blue bulb covers on everything. Wasn't that bad at all.

samowrx 03-22-2002 12:45 AM

how did you mount the gauge in the vent? i wanted to do that but haven't figured out how it's done. and what size gauge is it?
broadfield 03-22-2002 09:35 AM

Partsexpress.com. But I am not sure if they have the bulb covers online. I ordered them out of their catalog. I help run a high-end car audio business and have the catalog at work. So I will get the part #'s today and post them. You will need 5mm and 3mm bulb covers.

The gauge is a 60mm. You have to take the round grey trim ring off the vent. Then pop the vent out. The hard part is taking the round black ring that holds and pivots the vent around. You can't just pull it out the front because it is too big. And taking out the rear would be very time consuming. So I just cut and broke it out. Since the gauge is a little smaller than the grey trim ring, you have to use a piece of black ABS to fill around the edge. I used a hole saw to cut a 60mm opening in the ABS. Then I trimed it down to nothing but a small ring. I fit the gauge in the ABS ring, then hot glued( good hot glue, the black stuff) the ABS ring to the backside of the grey ring. Being very careful to center the gauge in the middle of the grey ring. I then cut a round piece of ABS to pressure fit in the vent that sits behind the gauge to block heat and AC. Let me know if you have any more questions!

i'm having trouble locating the bulb covers as well..

anybody go any sites that sells these online ?
or have them and can sell them ?
broadfield 03-22-2002 05:14 PM

I just ordered 40 blue covers of each size (3mm and 5mm). Let me know if you need some! I can mail them to you. I am working on some blue LED's that are in a 194 bulb housing. I am going to try those within a week to see if they are brighter. Let me try that first, and if they are not any better I can mail you the covers. Just let me know what you wnat to change the color of. Because alot of people have aftermarket radios and won't be needing as many.

what about going with some actual colored bulbs?http://www.lightlens.com/coloredbulbs.htm
they wouldn't block as much light as a bulb cover right?
broadfield 03-24-2002 08:37 AM

Colored bulbs may have the same affect, I have never tried them. However, the paint burns off after awhile. Also, you usually can only find them in the 194 size( I think), which there is only couple in the whole car that are of that size. The rest are smaller. If you can't find the smaller ones, you could always paint your own with model paint.

i couldn't quite decide if i should post this on this thread or the other related thread. at any rate, i've found places that sell blue 194 LED's. does anyone know where i can get some red ones? really bright red ones? my dash looks sweet with the red but they're still a little dim, especially the odometer. any ideas? thanks

Ok I am still a little confused here. I want to do my entire dash and stock radio in Blue. I have a 2002 WRX and you guys are telling me that it can be done by just using bulb condoms and that is it? Are there any more modifications nessassary?

If anybody could mail me a detailed list of what I need and how to do it that would be really helpfull.

Still looking for pictures from the people that have done blue.

Also what's the best solution for the WRX temperature controls in blue? How well does it come out? Condoms, painted, cellophane, little blue bulbs (what size are they?)?
wrxlvr 04-01-2002 02:56 PM

WHAT ARE THE SIZES OF THE BULBS THAT WILL CHANGE THE WRXs LIGHTS TO BLUE?

sorry for yelling.
Jasno999 04-01-2002 05:13 PM

I am still waiting for somebody to tell me what I need and where I can get all of the material that I need to change my dash to blue.

Who sells the bulb condoms and the LED lights? How many do I need and what sizes of each?
BlackBeastie 04-02-2002 12:05 AM

jasno999 you can change the color of the dash all except for the instrument cluster. If you want to change the color of that, you will either have to remove the plate that is on the exsisting cluster and sand off the coating on the back of it (not something i would recommend) or get indiglo gauges. The rest of the dash, the radio, the HVAC should be able to be changed just by buying the colored bulbs or condoms. Those you should be able to pick up at your local auto parts store, such as Pep Boys or something.

Anyone have the part # from parts express on the blue bulb covers? 3mm and 5mm? Or anyone willing to send me out a few 3mm blue covers? I'll send a SASE if necessary.
wrx420 05-13-2002 09:15 PM

6pack, I noticed on the other thread http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=135733 that you were looking at the 194 LEDs. What other bubs are required for the center HVAC controls and the stereo? I assume there are some of the smaller ones in there as well. I am also interested in the part numbers for the bulb covers. Just would like to know what all I'm going to need.
128d 06-06-2002 12:37 PM

broadfeild it looked to me your interior seemed considerably dimmer. Is it or is that just because of the photograph?
broadfield 06-06-2002 06:29 PM

Dimmer-Yes

Yes, the gauges etc. are dimmer. I am ordering some LED's from ledtronics.com today! They are bad ass and are not your regular LED's. They have a very wide viewing angle(120-160 degrees), which is the problem with a standard LED(15 degrees). They are very, very bright and can be custom made to order. Also, the green tint on the back of the gauges and odometer don't even come close to affecting the color of the LED. They are far to bright and rich. The 4.5 mm wedged based bulbs which fit the climate controls and gauges will actually have 6 surface mount LED's in each housing. Pretty awesome! However, they are very expensive. About $11.00 each. So to do the gauges, climate controls, radio(3mm), cruise/driving light switchs(3mm) and the surface mount LED in the window switch it will cost about $150-$175. But I think it is worth it considering what you would spend on reverse indiglow gauges. And you get to keep your stock guages. I will post pictures when complete!
zacek 06-06-2002 06:30 PM

Blue Head Unit

How did u cange ur head unit to blue??? How about the buttons and knobs are they all blue???
broadfield 06-06-2002 06:33 PM

Everything is blue

Everything is blue. I used blue 5mm and 3mm bulb covers. Cost about $5.00. It took about 1 hour for everything. However, the covers make everything dimmer. I will post my LED pictures(if it works out to my satisfaction) within a couple of weeks.
tsbarro 06-06-2002 07:11 PM

Broadfield -
Can you tell me if you are certain that the instrument lights (heater/climate controls) are size 4.5mm, as well as how many bulbs are required for the center dash.
Also, on the Ledtronics.com website there is an option for voltage - I assume the 12v is the correct option??

Thanks for your help!!

128d 06-07-2002 12:15 PM

broadfield- Let me know when you get the new LED's in I would love to do this but I want it to look as professional as possible. That also brings me to the question because I wouldn't quite trust my self doing it were or how do you suggest I have it done?
zacek 06-07-2002 01:28 PM

broadfield: man I always wanted to do this since day one. Is impressive to see how many new shops selling the unimaginable things out on the internet. Would you make a list of all the bulbs needed and place where they can be purchased. I want to order all my bulbs and get them on too. As far as the cluster goes. Is is just better to get an indiglo cover. If you guys just remove the needles you are asking for trouble. I think there are 3 types of indiglo gauges, 2 of them generic and there is a genuine NS (nippon sei) one out there too. You guys can find them on eBay if u search for WRX. Anyway, please post the bulb guide and the pics as soon as your r done. Good luck.
broadfield 06-07-2002 06:24 PM

LED's

Zacek-

Actually, you do not have to remove the needles to change the bulbs. The bulbs just pop out the back. I ordered the LED's today and the ones for the radio will take 4 weeks. The gauge LED's I should have in about a week. It will only take 5 minutes to put them in. I will then post what the gauges look like. They might send me enough to do the climate controls also. Otherwise I will have to wait 2 weeks for those!
teamshiftpoint 06-08-2002 12:02 AM

if you have the time and money you can change all your dash lights to hyperwhite or blue LED like this guy with an Acura TL.

you can check out the site and read for yourself.
just so you get the jist of what it takes to do this.
it also give you some info on what leds to buy and where to buy them.

zacek 06-08-2002 03:28 AM

WOW! now.... that kicks ass. I want my subaru just like that one.

broadfield: i know, but to scratch the greeninsh stuff of the back plate you will need to open the cluster gauge right? Otherwise the blue bulbs will still look greenish.
broadfield 06-08-2002 09:14 AM

Nope!

Zacek-

You do not have to scratch the green stuff off! I have already tried it with a test LED(which is far less bright than the ones that I am getting). With the brightness and richness of the blue LED there is absolutely no green tint. It is just as blue as that picture.
