How I spent my St. Patties day, $20 flaps -- part 1

How I spent my St. Patties day, $20 flaps -- [emailprotected]
Went to pepboys to get an oil filter and windshield fluid and saw these. They are Groboski truck mudflaps, $9.99 a pair. You will also need some 1/4" nylon screw-type pop-rivets to attach. They can be found at pepboys too for 1.99$ for a multi-pack. I used the cardboard packaging to trace my template.

Edit: Update!!
Guys for those of you who are scraping everywhere and want slightly less aggressive flap for dailys, I found these for .98c at Autozone! These ones are 9" wide instead of 12" wide. Also they have a double re-enforced area to prevent warping after extended use.

looks good, nice DIY
ScoobySnacker 03-17-2007 08:51 PM

They look really wide. It might just be me.
Mr. Sadface 03-17-2007 09:22 PM

"Wider is better".
kirkeemonster 03-17-2007 09:53 PM

are they as stiff as the rallyarmours?

passanger looks lower than drivers
MF-DIF 03-17-2007 10:03 PM

The ground is uneven in the parking lot. I used the same template on each side to make sure its even.

The flaps are pretty stiff and hard. Not rubbery and flimsy. I scrap them on speed bumps but at only $20 im not worried.
J-boogie 03-17-2007 10:07 PM

I'm just curious. Why would one want mudflaps? You did a nice job none the less...
Letx 03-17-2007 11:18 PM

nice cheap mod, I need to do this. Fronts & rears are the exact same measurements?

keeps the car MUCH cleaner when driving in snow/mud/slush... They also prevent alot of rock chips behind the wheel wells.
UM-WRXer 03-17-2007 11:32 PM

nice job. They look just like the RA's i have. Cool DIY

I didn't need them either until I put on a pair of 18x8 wheels.....it was painfully obvious how much crap they were picking up and throwing onto the sides of my car the first time it rained. Plus I think its an aggresive look in person.

haha -- youknow, i meant to do the SAME thing for the winter, but my tranny fell out over a month ago, so there's really no need

lol@$89 flaps

jac04 03-18-2007 06:05 PM

I used the exact same ones to make the flaps for my Legacy. I used slightly thicker versions from NAPA to make flaps for my WRX, but they are now discontinued. The pepboys flaps are very durable & flexible (I've had them on through 2 winters), but they will start to take a permanent 'bent back' set after a while. Not a big deal.

Excellent job - simple, effective, and inexpensive. I still can't believe anyone would pay $$$ for an ugly set of flaps with a horrible looking logo on them.
kennyvb 03-18-2007 06:11 PM

good job
IllNastyImpreza 03-18-2007 06:14 PM

I'd rather just not drive through the mud :p

They look beefier than the other 225/45s I've used.
iheartmysuby 03-18-2007 07:37 PM

oh yea... my rallyarmor lolz at your 20dollar flapz.
pleue 03-19-2007 06:33 PM

i have the same ones, cut a bit different. have worked very well for 3 years and counting.
eurospek 03-19-2007 06:51 PM

Look great!
Letx 03-19-2007 07:01 PM

i'm about to attempt this. they cost me $11.99 over here. did you use the stock pop rivets on the inside? or did you get totally new ones? any pics of the process? i don't wanna screw up my cheapo flaps
Aaron'z 2.5RS 03-19-2007 07:30 PM

I did the SAME THING... 100bucks for mud flaps, not in my lifetime

I used these "spring nuts" that you can get from Subaru, they are plastic, but have a stainless nuts inside them, used stainless screws to... And a piece of stainless "flat stock" that runs from the connection point to the far inside of the flap, so they would curl toward the inside edge...

I have pics, but not my computer at the moment, this is that best i could come up with, and while they do help with rocks and such, not so much with "high speed" mud...

soundslikeboxer 03-19-2007 07:43 PM

howd you make the template?
MF-DIF 03-19-2007 08:03 PM
howd you make the template?
The mudflaps are precut from the package like that, I did no trimming. I used new pop-rivets because the stock ones tend to break when you remove them, I didn't want to take multiple trips to the store. Also the stockers are very short. With the added thickness of the flaps I doubt they would hold. The mudflaps come with some black screws too. I used 2 of theses in addition to 2 poppers to secure the rear.
ASMITHWRX 03-19-2007 08:25 PM

I think I just found a project for my next free evening. Great post.

is anyone scraping on bumps or driveways w/ their flaps? i think mine might be too low. damn. time to redo my fronts.

Actually, I thought it better that they are rubbery. This way, they don't start dragging everything.
Letx 03-20-2007 02:14 AM

rears are complete. fronts are scraping on bumps/driveways so I have to do something about that.

here's some pics of my rear now

Should you compare apples to apples, but there is a tremendous difference between those and R/As (and various others of course)

Others are about about 3x-4x thicker than those (in pic)

The thickness is important with those types of materials as it will help the flap keep it shape and resist curling better (to function and look good over time as well)

Since they are quite thinner, it makes them foldable almost like like a piece of paper

and actually stay that way (until you fold them back) -the material itself being very similar to a report binder

there is also the finish to consider as well and how it looks (and most importantly functions) on the vehicle. In comparison to the R/A's textured automotive matte finish (on the classic RA flaps not the urethane version) that material itself is quite prone to scratching as it really has no texture to it

that was actually straight from the package and placed on the table- (think it was my fingernail?)

As a DYI and on a budget, those can most certainly work, but are not of equal comparison. :)

^^^^^^^^ OBVIOUSLY works for rallyarmor  DYIFTW!
Costas 03-20-2007 09:08 AM

Simply addressing the misperceptions need to be addressed, knowledge = good.

(I actually own R/A and we are currently researching releasing budget flap kits as well) ;)

Letx- if your rubbing on your DIY, try tapping the holes a bit lower from the original mounting points you used instead of cutting (this should raise them up- just make sure you can clear your wheels from lock to lock when turning)

LUKEWMC 03-20-2007 10:58 AM

Nice DIY....like my rallyarmors but if i did it your way i could have gotten them a little closer to the ground for better coverage! good job man!
VF34GRL 03-20-2007 08:33 PM

looks nice guys! I might have to try this!
rstinut 03-21-2007 12:51 AM

man those are pretty nice for the money. but rally armour does have that certain premade, easy install feeling about them.

no...

Prodrive FTW.
MF-DIF 03-21-2007 08:10 PM

Guys found a compromise to the scrapping problem. I went to autozone and found these flaps for .98 a pair!! And then when they rang me up I got a set for free because of some type of savings promotion. $1 for a set of (4)flaps!

These are 9" wide vs. 12". I think I'll save the 12" for rallyx and use these as dailys. I'll post some pics after I get some time to put them on.

dibblejr 03-21-2007 08:36 PM

They look nice and probably are ok for the warmer climates. However, I can imagine that at -30 deg they will probably bust off.
Not cutting your work down because I am in favor of saving a buck here and there. Good write up.
Now all you have to do is find a way to paint them.

Been rockin the PepBoy flaps for a few months now. I like them just fine. :)

I ran those generics on another car for 2 years in northeast weather/snow. No problems busting whatsoever. I did have to trim a bit to keep from scraping the wheels but they kept my sides clean.

OK. so the quality and the "performance" is there. The question I have...

Are they / could they be available in larger sizes ?

It would be nice, to have something from the top of the bumper, down to almost touching the ground. ( on a non-lowered car . ) Something less "streetable" and more, um... functional. I don't want to flame rally armor, but even the 200$ prodrive ones are tiny. Just my opinion.

Looking for actual ones that work.
