How I spent my St. Patties day, $20 flaps -- part 2
I'd rather just not drive through the mud :p
you know you drive a SUBARU riiiight? haha jk.

i have the thiner version on my leg, and it makes a HUGE diff. i went out for a gooood mudding session and when i got out to look at how dirty i had gotten my car... i was sorely disapointed. in a good way i suppose. but for day to day cleanliness, it works wonders. (to all black car owners,... BUY or MAKE SOME MUDFLAPS!!!)
Looking for actual ones that work.
I have these flaps on my Legacy, and they work very well. They are as low as they can be without scraping the ground regularly. I still scrape the rears a little pulling into my fairly steep driveway.
As you can see, I cut about 4" off the top of each flap so they wouldn't extend up too far. If you left the top alone, you could easily mount these flaps almost touching the ground.
nice cheap mod, I need to do this. Fronts & rears are the exact same measurements?
I have an 02 OBS and put these flaps on after I saw this thread. I like them. They're not a factory fit, but work very well. I placed the front flaps slightly higher than the rear. The edge of the front flaps doesn't stick out quite as far as the flaps on the rear. That was both by intent and by limitations on how much room there was in the rear wheel well.

If I was to do it over again, I might let the front flaps hang down a little lower than I did. But it looks fine and serves my needs.

It looks like the front and rear in the photo are configured the same. I didn't hang my as low, but it works fine for me. The OBS sits about 1/2 to 3/4" higher than the other Imprezas, so that may have contributed to how they look.

I used the factory pop rivet points. Any automotive store sells the variable depth body molding rivets, but they're a lot more expensive than what you can pay at Lowes for the same thing. In the parts drawers at Lowes, you can find body moulding plastic rivets. I used Ford style body rivets. A pair is about 85 cents. At the Autozone store, they were $2 a pair.

They have little tiny prongs that help hold them in place. The front on the OBS has three spots, and the rear has two. The holes on the front are slightly smaller than the rear, but it just takes a little more effort to push the rivets through the holes on the front. They sit tight, are the same color as the flaps, and look just as nice.

To measure and prepare a template for drilling, I used the cardboard packaging. I traced the mudflap on the cardboard and cut off the edge so the width was identical. Then I drew a line on the cardboard so I knew how much I wanted the flap to extend from the body side. On the front it is about 7/16", which isn't much. On the rear, it is about 9/16". This is from memory, and it will vary as to how much you want to stick out. A lot more than 9/16" and it might look a little retarded. It will depend on what you want. I like the look of the Rally Armor flaps with their notched edges, so you could replicate that by notching the superior portion of the flap.

Anyway, with the cardboard cut to the proper width and the guide line drawn on the edge, I made sure the cardboard was parallel to the ground and then took a pencil and found the indentations where the factory rivets sat by pushing on the cardboard until they popped in. These were my drilling guides.

Laying the flap on the cardboard, I clipped it in place with binder clips and drilled my holes. Both sides are identical, so it's just a matter of flipping the cardboard over and doing the other side as a mirror image.

Same process for the rear, with a bit more of the flap sticking out as I mentioned. Add the plastic rivets and then double check your placement to make sure they look parallel.

On a sharp turn, the front wheels rub slightly on the most interior edge of the front flaps. They may need to be trimmed slightly on the front if this is a bother to you.

has anyone done this on a 06/07? ive looked at the fender well and found 2 or 3 mounting points for the pop rivets, but is that enough? the inner part of the mud flap is loose. how did you guys fix that?

here's a picture of mine showing the bolt holes. i had to drill one through the side skirt thing, there's a little dimple on there where there is a hole behind it, if that makes sense.

there are instructions somewhere on here.
