BrysImpreza 09-03-2001 11:41 PM

I finally made my guages blue! attn: all non-RS owners who don't get indiglos!

Yay for me, I turned all my stuff blue, Stereo, CD Player, Guages and I even put in runner lights by my feet, my car is so dope at night!
I only have this one pic, you have to see it first hand!
Bry.[IMG]http://members.i-club.com/UserPics/2863/blue.jpg[/IMG]
What do you think?
Bankheist 09-03-2001 11:49 PM

im friggin imprezzed!
Vigorous 09-03-2001 11:50 PM

That is SWEET!
Howd you do that?
theGrideimpreza4u 09-03-2001 11:56 PM

Now u no u got to tell me how to do this just that tachometers because i like the rest green but i want blue up there to throw off and as me and bryimpreza go through cant ever get nothing for the L!so if ya could howd u do that ??
theGrideimpreza4u 09-03-2001 11:59 PM

bry how many miles u got on your 97 i only got 44,370
BrysImpreza 09-04-2001 12:07 AM

Proposition

Here's what I wanna try, I have a few spare Impreza radios from installs and having 3 in my family.
For $30 shipped I'm willing to turn your radios another color you want (Blue or Red for now), I'll send you mine and in return you send your stock one so I can mod it for another person, and so the cycle continues.
Otherwise, for all pre 99 owners just go and get the color bulb you want in a 194 bulb, these will work for your guages, but just a warning, you're gonna cut your hands up alot taking apart your guages and it's not that easy, so be careful!
Bry.
BrysImpreza 09-04-2001 12:10 AM

Gride, didn't I tell you I'd come through some way or another, maybe not the lighted needles, maybe not indiglos, but I did my best for ya!
I just hit 61K last week.
Here's a tip to make it look spectacular, paint your gauge surround white, it reflects great!
I'm going to find some neon Red paint for my needles to make them look like the VW guages
Bry.
Bankheist 09-04-2001 12:14 AM

and when i come back into business we're gonna join forces :)
BrysImpreza 09-04-2001 12:17 AM

High Five on that one my friend! :D
Bankheist 09-04-2001 12:21 AM

if we only lived closer :)
BrysImpreza 09-04-2001 12:24 AM

It's aiight, for the little stuff UPS and USPS shipping is ok, we'll just keep this between us, and make Subaru interior lighting the coolest stuff on the road.
Bry.
Bankheist 09-04-2001 12:27 AM

BrysHeist Interior Lighting systems :D
Dre2932 09-04-2001 01:24 AM

SWEET!

Now that looks great. I'll have to PM you on how you did everything..
ATX25RS 09-04-2001 03:54 AM

They look pretty dim, do the needle still shine through??
BrysImpreza 09-04-2001 07:17 AM

It's actually really bright, I just have a Digital camera that doesn't work that great @ 1 am in near perfect dark :D
Bry.
ylexot 09-04-2001 07:43 AM

I finally got the numbers on the guages to show up white. For some reason, Subaru decided to be redundant and not only have the green condoms on the buls, but also have green paint on the guage face! I had to sand the paint off  But my red odometer looks awesome at night :D
BrysImpreza 09-04-2001 01:16 PM

Ya, I tried the red and it didn't work cept for the illum. in front and the odometers, the gauges were a weird dark green.
So Blue is gonna be the color, the bulbs make it all blue instead of any green.
Bry.
theGrideimpreza4u 09-04-2001 06:00 PM

bry its funny that u said paint it white i was thinking that but i cant because my interior is tan an green i custom painted it at work i think it might look a little funnt but i think that the blue would look killer in there all though i could always sneak a little white pearl wit blue tint out of the body shop and spray it that color! hmmm...ideas are sturring up my friend and good job on coming through wit the L u get a A + on this one from me!!
IMPREZA GUY 09-04-2001 07:58 PM

TELL ME HOW! i want blue gauges!!!
BrysImpreza 09-04-2001 08:10 PM

I dunno if it'll work in the way I did it with a post 99 car, the pre 97's use 194 bulbs for illumination, I just went to an auto parts store and bought 6 blue 194 bulbs, painted my guage surround white to reflect the blue and make it look like it's glowing.
I'm on the search for some red neon reflective paint to paint my needles so they appear as if they're glowing (i.e. New VW guages)
If you use blue you won't have to sand off the backs of your guages, otherwise, good luck, it's a pain in the arse.
Bry.
viper 09-04-2001 08:31 PM

You said you used 6 194 blue bulbs. Did this include the a/c contols and temp controls. Did you even make these blue?
BrysImpreza 09-04-2001 10:46 PM

That'll come this weekend, I did the gauges, the stereo and CD player and runner lights by my feet.
The A/C assembly is a little punk to get apart, the screws are from the back, but I'll get it, I have an arsenal of crazy tools to work with, I'll make sure to get all pix up this weekend!

Gride, You've got the custom green and tan right? I did everything beige and black, including dash, doors, backseat, etc. We need to compare, I went completely insane on my car and recarpeted, repainted and reupolstered mine :D

I need to stop spending money on my POS
Bry.
theGrideimpreza4u 09-04-2001 11:11 PM

ya i no what u mean by the spending all the money on the good old L:lol: but hey to each there own i got the 4 door but i put the 2 door rs wing on and people that own leagacy and other subaru i over hear them at red light o look the 2.5 rs and i shake my head and pull away laughing.i just tinted all my windows 20% all around looks good at night got a couple cops on me about it already but o well if i can find a pic of my ride ill post it ill check b tappers sit brb hopefully?!
theGrideimpreza4u 09-04-2001 11:22 PM

i just though of something u no how u used 194 blue bulbe what if i used my green 194 i have from my parking light they are really green and are the bulbs that are origanally there clear because if so ill just put the real green ones in !! i would like would like that better i think let me no and here is a recent pic
theGrideimpreza4u 09-05-2001 05:54 PM

also ignore the spt sticker thats coming of soon !!! cant belive i had that on my car
theGrideimpreza4u 09-05-2001 11:55 PM

so how mant bulbs do i need for the guages all of the guages i mean does it take six like u said or what any hekp would be appreciated?! thxs greg
BrysImpreza 09-06-2001 01:22 PM

6 Bulbs for the guages, I'm not sure about the A/C yet, I'll do that this weekend.
Bry.

its actually a blue paint but looks black and now shines Yellow instead of amber
viper 09-06-2001 08:28 PM

When you put the bulbs in did you have to take out the speedo and tach cluster? I started to take mine apart, but I couldn't figure out how to take out the cluster. Also if or when you take it out does it mess up the needles on the speedo? Where did you buy your bulbs?

Thanks
ScoobyBoy 09-06-2001 08:42 PM

Accurit - i like your car! looks so fierce
scottsubarus 09-06-2001 10:29 PM

nice mod! i did the gauge cluster, and i took the a/c-fan-temp control bulbs out and they are little tiny ones--im not sure what the # is. i went to a few auto parts stores and couldnt find them in blue. maybe they'll have to be painted??? let me know what you do when you get to it, and if youre able to find the bulb.
BrysImpreza 09-06-2001 10:44 PM

Reach on the back, you'll feel some plastic rectangular projections at the peak of the speedo and tach, then 2 more on each side, think of the placement of the bulbs like a triangle, so the other two bulbs are at a 45 degree angle at the base of the triangle.

Twist the plug, it comes right out, pull out the bulb and replace it with the color of your choice, blue works best so far if you don't sand down the guage backings.

I got mine at Advanced auto parts, but I saw them at Wal-mart and they have them on carparts.com for all you car guys who don't like to leave your house. :D

*Exhale*

Hopefully that helps!
Bry.
theGrideimpreza4u 09-06-2001 11:21 PM

i took my dash all apart tonight to do this it still is gonna be apart until tomm night im taking the guage cover the lil black surrounding part and painting it i made a green white pearl paint at work im gonna paint it tomm and have it all done by tomm night went to advance tonight got 6 lil blue bulbs and i should be done.only thing is having everything loose and drivind dont work my speedometer cable kept coming loose cant wait till tomm nigt to see what it looks like.thxs alot bry ill post some pics to when i am done of the pearl painted pieces?
ylexot 09-07-2001 07:52 AM

Update on the white dash

I finally got my guages to show white and not be too bright. I tried using a glass frosting "paint" thinking it would be translucent, but not opaque enough to block out all the light. Turns out the stuff is actually clear, just an ultra-flat clear. So, I got bold and used flat white paint. I tried one coat...too bright still. I eventually got to 4 coats and it's good enough. If you look closely, you can still see where I sanded the paint off the back.

I guess this could work with any color. The toughest part is getting the needles right again.

viper 09-07-2001 12:35 PM

I just finished putting in the blue bulbs! It looks great! I have a 95 L and it took 8 bulbs. Its a real pain trying to reach your hand in back and not drop the bulb. But it sure was worth it! It is much brighter than the pic that was posted. Great work!
theGrideimpreza4u 09-07-2001 07:18 PM

mine done will look tonight to se what it look like
i painted mine green pearl white looks killer
hoodwho 09-07-2001 08:31 PM

took me 5 min! ok 10.... 98rs only has 5 bulbs.... why didnt we do this earlier?!?!?
BLZ2DWL: 09-08-2001 02:09 AM

blue just aint workin

I took my gauges out and sanded them down so all the numbers were clear. then I put in blue bulbs from advance. Blue bulbs when lit look alot like green, so my gauges looked like they did before, just brighter. Then I painted the clear bulbs blue. I now had dim green lights. So I go to walmart and get blue bulbs. Back to bright green now. So I paint the back of the gauges blue and run clear lights. I got blue gauges now, but you can tell which numbers got more paint than the others and the dash just isn't consistent enough for my taste. Since I've got a red car, I decided to sand the blue paint off and try red bulbs tommorow, maybe the red bulbs will actually be red unlike the blue(green) bulbs. I'll post a pic when I do the red tommorow. I also found out that you can sand the gauges down and paint them without removing the needles. Its a pain, but atleast all my gauges are still correct.
theGrideimpreza4u 09-08-2001 02:55 AM

hmm

it looked good tonight but it was only blue in some spots was i suppose to sand anything if so let me no asap thxs greg other thatn that it looks somewhat good i want it just like in the pic :D
BrysImpreza 09-08-2001 06:57 PM

Did my A/C module today, looks ok, could be better.
I just covered the clear parts with blue mylar,
I'm going to look for blue bulbs for those too, but they are REALLY tiny, so who knows.
Bry.
BLZ2DWL: 09-08-2001 07:31 PM

a/c bulbs?

I was going to put red bulbs in my a/c controls today since all the original bulbs had burned out, but I can't find any bulbs that small. I can't even find clear bulbs for it. Radio shack had some bulbs that looked right, but they were only 2.5v and I tried one and it didn't work. Any ideas on where to get replacement bulbs?
hoodwho 09-08-2001 09:33 PM

a little too dark on 98rs.... blackface gauges have green tint on the back... but i cant figure out how to disconect the needles to get a good look back there...

also my needle is red, well was red, now its almost black....think i can sand it?

i think if i can get the green off the back it would look much better... urghhhh and it was raining out too....

hmmm
BLZ2DWL: 09-08-2001 09:49 PM

Here they are

Here's my red lights... My Legacy has 4 194's and two smaller bulbs in the middle. I couldn't find the smaller bulbs in red so I painted them. The inside of the big guages is a slightly different shade of red than the rest of the gauges, but I can live with that for now. I should have turned down the intensity for the pic, the pic is more impressive than the gauges are. And before you ask, I didn't paint the needles, they just look red in the pic for some strange reason?!

The gauges are actually red to the eye, the camera makes them look weird for some reason, but the pic will give yall some sort of idea what red gagues look like. Now if I can only find bulbs for the a/c controls....even replacement ones, I can make it all red.
scottsubarus 09-08-2001 11:29 PM

Brys---where did you get the blue mylar???
theGrideimpreza4u 09-09-2001 02:15 PM

u no the black surrounding piece that seperated the guages that some of yins painted weel sice i painted it green pearl it reminds me of glow in the dark material white in day then glows so my bezal thingy looks indiglo green now looks really good. were do i get blue myler or whatever u said it was so i got to sand the back off and paint it blue or what ??
BrysImpreza 09-09-2001 08:22 PM

I got it at Michaels Crafts in Manchester, CT. I think they are a nation-wide chain, if not Wal-mart seems to have a decent selection of craft stuff.
As for the bulbs, I checked Radioshack.com, they have the white ones, but no blue.
My next try will be to take out the Lexan pieces that transfer the light from the bulb to the surfaces and paint them with transparent blue spray paint and see what happens, or maybe the bulbs first since that would be alot easier.
Bry.
BLZ2DWL: 09-09-2001 11:53 PM

miniature bulbs

do you have a part # for the a/c bulbs that you found on Radioshack.com? I found some at the local radioshack, but they were only 2.5v.
BrysImpreza 09-10-2001 11:25 AM

Nope, I don't have the P/N, but if you bring a bulb to basically any decent car parts store I"m sure they can help out, thats all I had to do when one of mine burned over the weekend.
Bry.
BLZ2DWL: 09-10-2001 12:44 PM

autoparts store?

Bry, you actually found these bulbs at an autoparts store? I work at autozone, and we don't have em. Neither does advance or napa. If you found a store that has them, then you've got one good parts store. I talked to the dealer today, he's got them for $3 each.
BrysImpreza 09-10-2001 04:43 PM

I have a guy in my town who has a small shop that has anything and everything you can imagine, it's crazy! He goes through big A auto or Napa, I can't remember, maybe I'm taking forgranted that I have a crazy packrat shop right downt the street!
BLZ2DWL: 09-10-2001 08:25 PM

found em

I got my a/c bulbs at the dealer for $3 each, painted them red, and now I've got red gauges and buttons. Next, I'm gonna make my shift indicator red(i've got an auto).
White Knight 09-11-2001 06:18 PM

what did you use to paint them red, and how bright are they after they are painted?

Mark

PS I realy want my car to have red lights.
BLZ2DWL: 09-11-2001 10:02 PM

red lights

First I used red engine paint, thinking the heat resistance would come in handy. Turned out that the paint was too thick and wouldn't let much light through. So I ended up using some Cheap Krylon Cherry Red paint, and just lightly dusting the lights. I can still barely read the bulb number printed on the glass. It worked great, and now my gauges and my a/c controls are red, I'll post a pic when I get a chance. Only thing now is my cd player. Its a kenwood and its green. As far as I know, its gonna be too much of a pain to change the bulbs in it, so I guess I can live with Christmas all year around.
White Knight 09-11-2001 10:39 PM

I have the Kenwood too, but my model is the one that changes to red and green:D :D

Thanks, Mark

P.S. can't what to see the pic's:)
BLZ2DWL: 09-12-2001 12:54 AM

here'y my red lights

my camera just doesn't like to take pictures of my dash lights, even when I dim them, they still look withe/red/orange...but here's a pic anyway. There's also a pic of my a/c controls...
BLZ2DWL: 09-12-2001 12:55 AM

a/c controls

...
White Knight 09-12-2001 06:59 AM

:D :D :D :D YAh that is what I want. Now lest see if I can do a good job like you have. Or do you want to send me your lights in trade for mine:D :D :D

realy looks great.

Mark
BrysImpreza 09-12-2001 11:29 AM

For that try to get some transparent red paint from a hobby shop, it'll cover the bulb nicely and still be tranparent (this is the stuff you can use on taillights)
Bry.
Pinochle 09-12-2001 11:44 AM

There are things called light balloons that are made specifically for this purpose. They go over white bulbs and are coloured filters. I'll contact my supplier to see if they are available, and I'll get back to you all.

P.
BLZ2DWL: 09-12-2001 01:12 PM

bulb condoms

I tried to find some locally, but the stereo shop we have is useless unless you want chrome wheels or racing stripes. If you can find them, let us know, I would rather do that, as it owuld be a bit brighter I think. Although, the factory uses blue covers, and all it does is lessen the intensity of the light, it doesn't really change the color. I wonder if red covers would emit pink light?
