Just got an Sti - hate the seats!!!

I just took delivery of my sti this past weekend and I really dislike the seats. After taking a 70 mile trip, my lower back and the side of my left leg were really in pain. The main issue really seems to be the side of my leg. There is a metal or fiberglass piece inside the side bolster that seems to cut right into my outer right thigh. My right side is fine. I have tried several adjustments of the seat with little results.
What type of options do I have in terms of improving the seat comfort without replacing the 2 front seats (last resort). Do these seats break-in over time? Are there cushions you can use to improve the comfort? Can I bend that side bolster so it doesn't cut in as much?
TIA for the help!

Are you a big guy? Most of the complaints I've seen were from small guys floating around in their seats because of the poor upper body bolstering. I think the frame is metal, try bending it.

Long trips sucks... But I love'em. Wish I could get either of these.

I felt the same way when I got my99 RS. (I know the seats dont compare) but its just that the seats were more rigid with more lumbar support than any cars Ive had before, it took a few days, but I got used to them, and eventually really started liking them.
But you could always sell them for a pretty penny as well.
Peace

Im 6 ft 170lbs -- not too big. I just have a sensitive back. The lumbar support seems to be a little excessive (it really seems to protrude out to my lower back)

Somewhat off topic:
Are the STi seats not comfortable for big people? I'm only 5'10", but weigh 235 <weightlifter>, will the STi seats be uncomfortable on long drives? I drove an '05 STi not long ago and found the seats comfortable enough, but that was for less than 20 minutes...
Thanks in Advance.

As I said in my initial post I only want to get new seats as a last resort. This is a 30K car and I dont feel too good stripping out the nice new blue seats and putting in some aftermarket goodies. Plus, I think resale value (while far off b/c I dont plan to sell the car soon) will be affected if I dont keep the car somewhat stock.

if you have that sensitive of a back, maybe you should go test some sparco seats out. Those tend to keep your back in one spot the entire time.
| MB38 | 07-11-2005 01:01 PM |
Unfortunately, replacing the seats is your only realistic option. The seats are designed for the average 5'10" 220lb american. Many folks switch to the JDM seats [designed for a smaller frame] to keep the STi look, but people's wallets end up the happiest with true aftermarket seats. You'll also save a lot of weight. A friend of mine just put Sparco Evos in his M3 that weigh 17lbs with rails and brackets. The Vader seats that were originally in the car weigh over 80lbs. The STi/WRX seats weigh about 40 if memory serves.

I hated mine on long trips when I first got the car (I'm 6'4", 220lb). They do seem to break in. And you can bend the bolsters out a little.

Would you like to trade for 04 STi seats? I have a set in MINT condition (4k miles on them) I would like to swap for 05's. That way you keep the STi look, and keep the OEM side impact bags, and have a better fitting seat.
Im a bit too skinny for the 04's.

I too had the lumbar support issues. It took a few weeks for my muscles to get accustom to the shape of the seat. After that, no more problems. It might also help to play around with the angle of the back of the seat. A more upright position will put less pressure against the seat on the lumbar area.
I would wait it out a month or two before deciding to do anything dramatic.

I just bought an '05 WRX over the weekend and I had a similar issue on the first day of driving. My left leg was in some pretty good pain.
I am 6'3 220lbs.
I adjusted the height up one pull, and then properly adjusted the seat back and seat bottom. Drove 150 miles last night, no problems.

I have an 02 wrx and my only complaint is that after around 3 to 4 hours on the road i start to get a cramp in my right leg, but i think it is because i have long legs. Other than that the seats are great. Although i would like to get new ones to save weight and add 4 point belts. Oh yea, i am 6foot 2 and 285 pounds.

I think the issue with the lumbar support is that it seems to hit a little too high on my back. And those side bolsters dig right in the outside of my leg.
As far a resale value, Im not planning to sell the car anytime soon. I paid cash for the car and am planning to keep it for at least 5+ years. I just wont feel good about stripping out the brand new seats and throwing some others in. If I were to do that, I would probably keep the stock sti seats in storage and put them back on when I plan to sell/ trade down the road.
But at the way my back feels b/c of these seats, I be lucky if I last a year
I better just wait a month or so and see if the seats break in. If not, I may have to go aftermarket.
The thing that bugs me is that the seats felt great when I test drove the car (an 04 sti), and I went to the showroom and sat in an 05 for a good 15 minutes and again no problem. But a long 70 mile drive is a lot different than a 15 test drive I suppose.

The seats in the M3 are pretty good. The overall ride quality VS the STI is far superior and the seats are softer, but there isn't as much side bolstering (I think they are designed for fat americans). However, I find that on long trips in the M3 I need to get out and stretch after 250 miles or so because my butt starts to get kinda unconfortable.
The most comfortable seats I've had for long trips were actually in my old Integra GSR.

My bro has a 03 wrx and his seats are better than mine! they sit lower and are more of a bucket seat. The metal bracket is actually about 1 inch lower in the back than my 05 sti seats. I was thinking about buying some 03 brackets and seeing if that would give me the same affect. I would just buy the 03 seat and put my sti fabric on it but the headrest isn't as safe as the 05 seats. but guys, we didn't buy the STi for comfortablility. it's mainly for performance remember?
i remember i had a discussion with some people on these boards about some things that the STi has. i just remember saying that the seats are mostly cosmetic and don't provide much use in terms of comfortability. they LOOK really good, nice suede blue with a nice STi logo, but what it provides isn't worth the 30k that some of you put down.

I really wish people would quit saying the seats are designed for "fatass americans". I'm 6'3", 225 and the seats fit me great. I'm not fat, just athletic. The seats were designed larger b/c americans are larger human beings, not necessarily fatter. Don't be jealous just b/c you're 150 lbs soaking wet.

Yes, you just need the aftermarket Recaro - Impreza sliders and mounts. The only problem is that they wouldn't match the back seats. They have a little blue speckled pattern on the mainly black seats but it doesn't really match the big blue pannel on the STi seats. Maybe get a black backseat of of a regular WRX or Impreza and sell your STi front & back seats off as a package to help offset the cost?
The Recaros used in (some of?) the Saturn Redline's has a Blue insert pattern that is a fair match to the stock STi seats. But they aren't as heavily bolstered as the EVO seats.

I had the '04 WRX seats in my Baja-T, I am 6'2" 195 - I found them to be very comfortable and supporting. I now have a set of Recaro Style seats. The bottom bolsters are not as agressive as the '04 WRX seat but they are more comfortable on long drives.
This is a pict during the installation, the '04 WRX seat still on the passenger side. '05 WRX with heat would be a nice inexpensive option to Recaros with heat/cold/power.

I used Recaro sliders with Sparco 400SB brackets manufactured by Speedware Motorsports for Sparco. Sparco also sells a Wedge bracket under a different part number. I chose this bracket for the greatest amount of headroom. My power Recaro seat goes up as needed from this low position.

RECARO SPX - this is the OEM seat for the new STI.
Available after SEMA in the US but:
1) $5000 PER SEAT
2) Not comfy over 200lbs because Japanese Style = smaller guys
BUT:
1) only 50 sets for the aftermarket available (limited with certification)
2) Cevlar Karbon high performance light wheight seat (like a pro racing seat)
3) Originall OEM part = buy it - bold it inside - go! (plug 'n play without hassle for adapters etc)
4) Lowest seat position (like on the floor)
If you want to know more ask. I also have more picture and details (measurement etc)

Recaro expects people who bought a 30k car to spend 10k on seats? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight..... I'll keep the crappy, designed for fatass americans, seats at those prices.

new STI? It was only in the limited S203. Not to confuse with the 06s coming out.

RECARO edition PP1 and PP2

SPX is for sure expensive but rare and high end. You can't compare this seat with the existing seats or other OEM standard seats.
More US like is the new SPORT PP edition which is available very soon.
Affordable and very good looking.

I'm 5'9" and 235lbs. Big chest, beer gut, heavy legs, but not round. If anything, I find that my 04 STi seats don't offer enough support for my upper body and the leg bolsters are too tight on my ass/thighs. I also don't like the feeling of sitting ON the seat, I'd rather feel the seat wrapped around me. However, the seats aren't uncomfortable for long drives, other then making my back sweat.

seats feel better now

Just a follow-up. I have now had the sti for about 2 months and the seats actually feel much better. It took about a month for me to get used to them but now no more back or leg pain. I think the seats are a little stiff when the car comes from the factory and after a few drives they feel much better.
Thanks again for all the replies. Any for those who do not like the sti seats, give them some time. They will break in

I've found the seats quite comfy...I am not big though...5'6'' and 155lbs. I have some back issues from wrestling and I actually prefer the large lumbar bolster. In fact, I thought it was too small when I first got the car. I will admit, if the car did not have the side airbags in the seat, I would probably get Milanos.

I have WRX seats for two reasons - they're more comfortable and they're black.
There are more than a few people willing to trade their WRX interior + cash for an STi interior.
