Last Go Round: Suzuka part 2

Shumacher on pole

M. Shumacher's on pole, with JPM beside him. Ralfie is on 3rd, with Rubens 4th. It should be a good race. :)

I know that we aren't all Schumi fans (I am, I am!!), but wasn't his qualifying effort impressive? Suzuka is such a driver's track, and his laps were dazzling to watch. Frankly, I think that he knew that he could have taken the driving suit off after the first lap, but he wanted to see how fast he could go. Interesting.

I'm still pulling for Rubens to get second place.

Awesome driving by Schumacher (m), absolute perfection on that last run. Did you see how cleanly he was taking the final chicane, mm perfect positioning.

Rubens doesnt have a hope in hell of getting second in the championship now, he had to be on the front row to stand any chance. Even if he won the race (which he wont!) choker (DC :D) only has to finish top 5.

My prediction is schumi, montoya, hakinen, DC, fisichela, button. hahaha :D

Yes Schumi's qualifying laps were amazing, absolute perfection. But doesn't he always qualify well there? I believe he knows that track so well he could drive it blindfolded and still be on the front row. That being said, I was more impressed with Juan Pablo's effort to get on the front row. Nicely done chili dog! I'd love to see JPM win this one or at least finish better than Ralf.

yep, Chili Dog did an amazing job considering he hasnt seen Suzuka before.

Suzuka is the most dificult track to learn where the grip is at, people like Irvine who raced in Japanese F3000 have a big advantage round there.

I think the race depends entirely on the tyres now. Michellin were efectively running twin compound tyres (which are illegal) that give huge grip for the first 2 laps then drop off masively for 10-15 laps then come back again.

Expect protests after the race from bridgestone if Michellin win because they are saying that they want this clarifying so they know how to develop over the winter.

Williams sandbagging?

The morning warm up has just finished. Ralfie 11th and Montoya 17th. Are they not showing the true potential, or is the race setup not that good? hmmm we have to wait and see. :)

JPM is the freakin' man!! Too bad he's gonna finish in second :( Oh well, as soon as BMW gets their motor sorted out, and Williams gets a really good package together, Ferrari is gonna' be in all sorts of trouble! What on earth am I going to do for the 5 months that F1 isn't going to be racing??!?!?!?!? Ahhhhh!!!! Jean himself said that his biggest fear is a "reliable Williams".. Just you wait Jean.. Just wait..

I dunno...I still think that Ferrari is going to be the team to beat next year. Consider that Schumi was racing a development mule today, and put the smack down. Further consider that much more work is going to go into that car.

The Williams/BMW will certainly be a formidable rival for next season, though I don't think that the advantage of having everything in-house, as Ferrari does, can be underestimated. In my ideal world, McLaren wouldn't show the downturn they seem to be hinting at, Williams would work the mojo, the Jordan would be competitive, and we'd get one other team in the mix, who isn't quite fast enough, but nips at the heels of the other teams.

That would be a really cool season. I just hope that we get to see it on Speedvision.

I think the biggest story of the race is how Montoya made Ralph look. Suzuka is supposedly one of Ralph's favorite tracks and JPM has never raced there before yet JPM out-qualified and out raced him. Ralph's been complaining that Williams needs to pick a number one driver for next year to seriousely content for the championship. I guess he should be careful what he wishes for! :D

The biggest story for me though, is the bad finish Jean Alesi had.
I hoped he could have done better in his last race.

the big story of the race was a Mianrdi finishing ahead of Frentzen, both Arrows and Panis in his BAR. Go Fernando!

It's going to be hard to beat Ferrari next year. Think about this: Schumacher retired only twice this year. Once for a cut tire and once because he was collected in an accident. That's unbelieveable reliability. Plus, in the 15 races he finished only once was he not on the podium (Monza - 4th). Williams is going to be tough next year and Mercedes does not want to finish behind BMW, so McLaren will be back.

Now a long cold winter before we hear that sound again.
