Melbourne Predictions.....Yes F-1 is back already!
Well, only a week away and I can read the headlines of F1-Live now:

3-09-02
Ferrari Humbled By Williams And McLaren

1. JPM
2. Ralf
3. Coulthard
4. Rubens
5. Schuey
6. DaMatta
HoRo1 03-02-2003 04:31 PM

OH NO! :(
stumpz 03-02-2003 07:15 PM

Hmm...
I've not posted regarding F1 in the past couple of years even though I've not even missed one race.

My predictions:
1. Scheuy
2. Ralf
3. Rubens
4. JPM
5. Kimi
6. Wildcard Trulli

Yes I think in "red"
Suresh

PS. Going to Canada and Indy this year.:D
gtguy 03-02-2003 09:48 PM

Thanks for starting this one, Fred! I was beginning to think that it was about that time. :D

1. Schumacher M.
2. Rubens
3. Schumacher R. (will finally realize that he has to beat Montoya to be taken seriously again within the team)
4. Kimi
5. JPM (he'll be fast, but will have tire wear issues)
6. DC

I look for the Toyotas to show much better than they did last year. BAR will have at least one engine failure, and Minardi will be slow, as per usual. I also look for Webber, in the Jaguar, to be in the top ten.

Kevin
ChrisW 03-02-2003 10:34 PM

don't forget toyota. If they have successfully copied Ferrari's design, then they will be a problem for williams.

Don't know about any predictions, see what the new rules bring.

I'm Seeing Red Again

Michael - The best driver in the best car
Rubens - Will keep Michael honest
Kimi - I'm guessing his sophmore blues will come later in the season
David - He'll be hoping Kimi has sophmore blues sooner
Juan - Dragging that Williams chassis around behind the McLarens will be that best that can be done w/it
Ralfie - Keeping Juan honest
Jarno
Fernando
Points are thru eighth now, right?
TimStevens 03-03-2003 08:09 AM

Well, I normally don't contribute to these threads, but I'm psyched for the season to finally be starting, so what the hell :)

1 - M. Schumacher - why not?
2 - Coulthard - I'm hoping for big things from McLaren this year
3 - Barichello - will fight with Kimi the whole way
4 - Raikonnen
5 - JPM - a humbling start, if what Sir Frank is saying is true
6 - One of the toyotas (who the heck is driving for them this year?)
7 - R. Schumacher
8 - Button - I dunno... just guessing this far down the field :)

The New impreza.net F1P6 Group @ Motorsport.com
"impreza.net" is now a registered group at the internet's oldest continuing F1 Pick 6 competition at www.motorsport.com. It is easy to use, it is free, and we are also competing with thousands of F1 fans from around the world. 1) Rubens
2) Coulthard
3) Ralf
4) Panis
5) Villeneuve
6) Kimi
7) Webber
8) DaMatta

I think Montoya and MS will take each other out in the opening lap.
grandpa rex 03-03-2003 04:07 PM

Geez, I'm glad the season is finally upon us. It's been a cold and lonely winter. I've missed Fred Zaplitny's rantings.

Unfortunately, Fred I don't think that things are going to change much.

1. MS
2. RB
2. DC
4. JPM
5. Raikkonen
6. Frentzen
7. Panis
8. Jackie Newtown
9. Alonso fights JV hard, but Jacques gets the last point.

Surprises: Toyotas are on pace most of the weekend. Saubers run very well.

Not suprising: Ralfie finds a way to put his car out. Both Jags and Jordans DNF, but both Minardis finish, albeit last cars running.

Can't wait to see the pole strategies play out.
prost893 03-03-2003 04:14 PM

I think Williams will struggle for a while until they get the new car's aero package in order. Toyota are improving. Thanks goodness another team is actually trying to step up. Pity BAR spend all this money and have nothinig to show for it.

MS
Rubens
Kimi
RS

Panis
JPM

All I want is renault to do well. I have a feeling Ferrari is going to dominate though.
robp 03-03-2003 06:41 PM

Hmmm, Ferrari and McLaren are using last years cars, so I think Williams will be fastest this race. Probably at least one of the Williams will be out early due to mechanical failure. When Ferrari starts racing their new car the season will be as lopsided as last year. I think Villenueve has a reason to try again this year and will score a respectable number of points if the Honda stops blowing up.

1. JPM
2. MS
3. RB
4. Kimi
5. Trulli
6. DC
7. Villenueve
8. Weber
mykrrrr 03-04-2003 09:54 AM

1) Minardi
2) Tolman/Hart
3) Benetton/Ford
4) McLaren/TAG

oh wait...it's not the 80's.

I think Toyota will do better. Ferrari will dominate. Williams will complain. Jaguar will DNF. Minardi will dominate the back row. :(

MS should secretly test the Minardi and tell them exactly how to design the car to beat everyone but he Ferrari. That'd be cool. :D

Dr. WOT 03-04-2003 11:40 AM

Here we go again! I have high hope for the new points system. The no refuel after qualifing rule should make for a few interesting grids. My guess is it will make multistop strategies more viable.

As for the resuts, no reason to think anything other than Schewy, although a surprise would be welcome.

I sure hope that BAR's engines don't die this race... I'd actually be quite surprised if they didn't given the poor reliability shown yesterday.

How about Villeneuve upping the anti with teammate Button? Wow, that sounds like that will be an interesting battle to watch this year.
gtguy 03-07-2003 12:24 PM

DaMatta was flat-out flying, until he hosed off the very last section. He was on pace for a top five, easily.

That format is interesting, I think. On the one hand, it removes the "traffic" complaint about qualifying, and keeps us from the 20 minutes of nothing happening, then Minardi processional, then everybody and their mamas on the track at the same time.

On the other hand, as with cycling time trials, sometimes where you are in the order can determine your time to a great extent, say if the early guys get wind, and the later guys don't. Likewise, if it rains early or late in the session, somebody will get hosed.

It's too early to tell if I like the new format, but I did like the programming line up of Rally Turkey, the Slideways Boys, then F1. That was cool.

Agreed... the only thing that first session proved is that the first session is meaningless!

Although in the case of a rarly used track such as Melbourne or Hungry going last is a decided advantage. Going last in Barcelona where the track is being used all the time won't make any measurable difference.

Re: New Qualifying Format
Essentially, Friday's qualifying format is the closest that we will get to the old style, drain the tanks, tweak the suspension, and let the driver take his best shot at qualifying.

The Saturday session is essentially the first lap of the race. The cars are all loaded up with the amount of fuel by which they will start the race, and the driver must not toss the car off the course, as they will at best lose time, and at the worst... if they bust up the car into the barriers, I'm not sure what the regulations allow, but if they can start, then they will have to start from the back of the grid.

In a nutshell,
Friday = empty tanks
Saturday = race tanks

At the sametime, on Friday, getting only one lap to get it all correct can be very difficult. During the normal Saturday 12 lap format, some drivers would complain that they made small mistakes on their hot laps, therefore left a little bit of time out there on the track. In other words, in 12 laps, they were not able to get a perfect, maximum speed lap. The odds of a driver putting such a lap down in one shot on Friday, will be much less frequent. In addition, since it is Friday, the teams have less time to learn the best set-up for the track and ambient temps, so many, if not most cars will be unbalanced in their handling during the Friday qualifying...

So I don't know if Dr. WOT is 100% correct in that Friday is mostly meaningless... For instance, Honda's performance was certainly noteworthy yesterday. As was da Matta's speed in sectors 1 & 2.

But if you think about F1 like Ferrari does, which is, "how do we maximize points so that we will win the championships?", then Friday's qualifying has less to do with scoring points, than did Saturday's qualifying in the old format.

So Friday qualifying is the new Bernie-vision... a made for TV spectacle which takes away from the track time which teams could be using to chase down the best chassis set-ups for the track, which would make for a better race on Sunday. C'est la vie...
gtguy 03-07-2003 11:13 PM

Well, the more things change...

Schumacher's lap was exceptional, and Rubens can claim that Kimi flustered him all he wants, but he was down on Michael before running aground of Kimi, who was way off the racing line anyhow.

Now, the real question is, what kind of fuel is everyone running? Given that qualifying times are 3-4 seconds under last year's pole time, and Australia is a one-stopper, it's a safe bet that everyone is running race fuel, which makes those Saubers impressive indeed, though something tells me that they'll be doing two stops.

Kimi needs the karma police.

I noticed that all of the cars except the Ferraris seemed twitchy. My guess is that has to do with the loss of practice and setup time. Also, I know that there's a lot of development left, but last year's (modified) Ferrari is .9 faster than the new Williams?

The race should be very interesting.

Kevin
ForceFed4 03-08-2003 02:49 AM

What about Minardi?

I guess they'll start from the back of the pack, but it seems they must have staged that. There's no way both drivers would make the same mistake...
Gil 03-08-2003 04:49 AM

Yup. It was "staged".

They want to give the mechanics the night to work on the cars.

It's been good so far. Nice weather and everyone here is psych'd. Webber is like a national hero here. The V8's that ran later was pretty cool too.
HoRo1 03-08-2003 10:15 AM

Another shellacking. Just like last season. Sir Frank is PRAYING that Ferrari is on a 2 stop strategy - not that it matters.
TimStevens 03-08-2003 10:18 AM

Sounds like you made it to the race, Gil! Have a great time! Take lots of pictures :)
OAKOS Automotive 03-08-2003 12:17 PM

I don't really like the new format already. Qualifying used to be all about putting in one lap as fast as the man and machinery would allow. Now we get cars strategically avoiding making a fast lap at all. What kind of qualifying session is that?

If anything, I think that Friday's times should allow the drivers to pick the order they want to run on Saturday, fastest guy picks first, second fastest next, and so on. That would eliminate any chance of sandbagging on Friday due to strategic concerns like Saturday's weather.

At least in this format each team gets equal TV coverage on Friday and Saturday and we will see some good drives from the back of the field like Kimmi will need to do tonight.

Re: BAR's Honda Engine Reliability
I sure hope that BAR's engines don't die this race... I'd actually be quite surprised if they didn't given the poor reliability shown <in Friday practises>.
Good news for BAR fans, or those curious as to the Honda engine reliability. Shuhei Nakamoto, Engineering Director, Honda Racing Development said the following after Saturday's qualifying,
As a counter measure to yesterday morning's problem both drivers are using the engine we ran for the majority our winter test programme.
So it looks like Honda installed an advanced engine for Friday's practise, but installed their more reliable version for Saturday and Sunday. In light of their impressive qualifying positions, (JV 6th & Button 8th), one could assume that they are running light tanks for a 2 stop race. It is hard to judge what their true performance will be...

As a matter of fact, I wonder if anyone will be running a one-stop race this year.

Of course the whole goal of having the cars qualify in their race set-ups and fuel loads, is to force more on-track battles. I'll take the cynical view that on-track battles will remain difficult until Bernie reduces the aerodynamic downforce available to the front wings, since F1 cars are particularly vulnerable to dirty air. If I recall, it near impossible to pass another car on most circuits unless you are lapping ~1 sec a lap faster... In F1, a second a lap is a life-time.

I hope I'm wrong and we all get to see dogfights all race long up and down the field! :) Bring it on!
ChrisW 03-08-2003 12:41 PM

Well after watching the first qualifing efforts by benie-vision I have a couple of comments.

The tire rule is stupid. You should be able to change tires between qualifying and the race. I mean, what happens if it rains the day of the race? Are they really going to send everyone out on slicks?

If a driver does not have a clean open track (such as Montoya and Rubens) they should get an imediate re-run. This problem will only get worse after they remove the radio communitcation between the driver and pit.

All cars should be required to do a qualifying lap. Minardi should not be allowed to run since they never ran a qualifying lap.

The two qualifying sessions should be averaged to produce the final positions. Otherwise, the first session is almost meaninless, and is nothing more than a fancy test session.
ForceFed4 03-08-2003 12:55 PM

For tires, I believe they're allowed to change them as long as they use a set that has more laps on it than the ones run in qualifying. As is the case for Kimi, who obviously can't start on a blown left rear.

Are they actually going through with removing driver/pit communication? I know telemetry is gone, but I can't believe they'd actually eliminate radio contact, seems absolutely rediculous. Since the whole (official) point of the one-lap qualifying is to give each driver a clean lap, I agree; if you don't get a clean lap for reasons beyond your control you should get another. Unofficially, I think the change is to make for more TV action on the track, so I doubt we'll see that change.

As for Minardi, I too find it bizarre that they'll get to run; is being able to work on the cars a big enough advantage to accept starting from the back of the pack?

On the other hand, if it was staged to rub a huge loophole in the FIA's face, then I applaud their giant cojones for doing it. The FIA seems to be completely rudderless, making random rules without truely thinking them through or carefully drafting them, and quite frankly, if that allows certain teams to ride roughshod all over them, too damn bad, maybe they'll learn to stop meddling before they know the impact of their proposed changes. I doubt it though, they'll probably just blast Minardi for daring to do that...

It was a conscious decision, we checked the rules, made absolutely sure we could do what we're doing, so for us there was little downside and mega-upside if it rains.

If it rains we're going to have a good advantage, because we'll have a wet set-up on the car, we'll have the right fuel load on the car and we'll be ready to go out and race. If it's dry, we'd probably have been at the back anyway so we've probably lost nothing. I think it's a bold move but hopefully a sensible one.

This is not a case of Minardi doing this at every race, we may never do it again, but if there is a balance of probability, a worthwhile risk versus reward scenario that gives us the advantage over our opponents, then that's what's racing's all about
Stoddart was raised in Melbourne where the weather is notoriously fickle. Minardi had consulted with the governing body of the race before using this tactic.

That race between Kimmi and Shumey was what I think the best one of the race.

Montoya would have won if he hadn't spun but as he said in his own words in the press conference, "**** happens!"

I think the new tires are great (At least for this race).

Now for the facts,

First time since 99 that a Ferrari isn't on the podium.
First time since 98 that a Bridgstone isn't on the podium.

And the grand question, What was the last time Michael wasn't on the podium?

BTW, Did anyone else see the logo (555 (just like the ones on the WRC Subies) on David's and Kimmi's suits???

I was like (LOOK, LOOK THERE IT IS!!!!!)

Leo

Whoo hoo!!! Go
PurePower 03-09-2003 11:17 AM

Are you sure it was 555? I'm pretty sure British American Tabbacco owns 555. And having their own racing team wouldn't that be a conflict of interest?
TimStevens 03-09-2003 11:19 AM

I don't see a 555

Do you mean the three red swoops? That's just McLaren's logo.
Fred Zaplitny 03-09-2003 03:09 PM

So are you Schumacher fans seeing red yet?!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ferrari sucks!

Chilidog rules! Well he would have won if he didn't screw up.

We'll let SpongeDave SquareHead have this one.

Is it me or does Montoya look stoned in this pic?

Maybe that's why he spun.

I think that's the "**** happens" expression ;)

<conspiracy_theory>
Anyone else think Villeneuve came in a lap late to deliberately screw up his teammate's race?
</conspiracy_theory>
Fred Zaplitny 03-09-2003 04:05 PM

There's just one more thing I gotta post....
Obligatory pitbabe pic:

Okay, now the thread is complete!

Dude, I think that "Pit Babe" on the far left used to be a guy. The other three look authentically female though.

Check out the impreza.net current F1P6 standings! We did pretty good! Our average score is 31, which is not bad for the first race of the season, especially since it was a rainy race, too.

What a spread we had too! That's me in the middle with 26. I don't post here often.

I see several of us thought CdM might come in and be a top runner like JPM did a couple years ago.

You and I had 5 of the 8 the same, but I took a couple of fliers. Big standings difference between 40th and 2629th! Thought JPM wouldn't finish, again...

Thanks for pointing out the link,

a little bit late, but you can blame timstevens for turning me on to my memories of the melbourne race.

confirmed. i'm looking at a pack of 555's and it says "555 State Express of London" on the front, and "British American Tobacco Group" on the side.

what possessed me to pick the 555's over my regular Malboros tonight i don't know.
