My "New" Race Car: Non-Subie Content
Just got back from a roadtrip, Chico, CA to Kansas City and back. Picked up this little Beast. His name is "Brick" and yes he loves lamp:

It's a 1972 Fiat 128 Sedan that is prepped for Vintage Racing. The story goes...this car was purchased new in 1972 and immediatly converted into a C-Production Race car and campaigined in the Mid West through 1978. It was then stored away until 1996, when it underwent a thorough restoration. Since then it has been run in SVRA events a few times per year.

It isn't 100% clean, nor perfect condition body/paint/interior wise. It is a race car, but with a couple weekends of attention, it will be a little prettier. Because, afterall, pretty = fast. Just ask Tom Hoppe.

Here are the basic specs:

weight: ~1,700 pounds
power: ~ 100-110hp (52hp stock)

-1290cc engine bored 0.040" over
-1116cc PBS Engineering big valve/port cylinder head (26cc combustion chambers should give around 9.7:1 compression, 8.5 stock)
-Twin Weber 42DCNF carbs, freshly rebuilt by Pierce Manifolds
-Alquati intake manifold
-PBS B-3 Race Cam
-Light flywheel
-freshly rebuilt Steve Hoeschler transmission, using X1/9 gears and 4:08 final drive
-2 race old axles, all suspension bushings, wheel bearings etc.
-fresh brakes including yet-to-be-bed Ferado pads
-X1/9 rear struts (shorter housing) with Koni inserts
-currently sitting on Cromadora CD91 wheels with 205/60-13 Hoosier Dirt Stockers
-2 sets of CD91 with fresh Hoosier TD Vintage rubber
-1 set of 13x7 Panasports with 215/50-13 V710
-Racetech seat, full harnesses
-in spec fire system
-8 gallon fuel cell
-spare brand new 1116cc short block
-spare rebuilt 1290cc short block
-spare brand new 1116cc PBS big valve/port head
-5 sets of struts
-enough new brake and suspension and wheel bearing parts to last a lifetime
-2 extra cams, including a PBS S2 and Alquait 40/80
-2 spare transmissions
-6 boxes of misc parts
-spare hood, rear trunk lid, 2 brand new front fenders
-14' beavertail tandem axle trailer

Tonight I hope to get more pics, especially of the interior and engine bay. I was just a bit too tired last night.

My plans are to run the car at some Thunderhill track days to get use to it this fall, then hit the track next year with the local SVRA club. Should be fun.

Oh, and yes, I know all about Fiat 128s, so IBfixitagaintony.

See you at Thunderhill :)

Awesome!

Just out of curiousity, how much would one of those cost? Just a rough figure if you don't want to say.

sachilles 06-27-2006 04:22 PM

I like it.
Suprised it weighs that much.
Draken 06-27-2006 05:28 PM

The whole package ran about $5500, car, trailer, and tons of spares. My F250 extracab long bed is filled with big rubbermade bins full of new parts. I must have 5 sets of new brake rotors, new calipers, new struts, extra cams, hood, front fenders, all sort of stuff.

It probably seems like a lot for an old Fiat, but if you take out the trailer and half the spares, I figure i'll have about $3-3,500 in the car, ready to race.

BTW...this is replacing my existing track car...my '04 STi. I have a feeling I'll miss the power down the front straight at Thunderhill, but not the fuel, tire, and brake bills!

sachilles 06-27-2006 05:31 PM

Its a completely different experience in a something like that.
I have a 61 mini.
What you give up in power, you gain in agility.

That being said, you have to be on your a game, as a mistake can't be made up by hammering the throttle.
It will make you a better driver, and it will be a lot of fun. Enjoy it. certainly seems like a fantastic price to me.

Very cool car. My uncle had one in Spain...I think it was a 128. I was only 4 when we were there but it was hella cool. Ran on propane I think.
leecea 06-27-2006 06:04 PM

Very nice. I drove 125s when I was young and they were lots of fun.
FromageTheDog 06-27-2006 07:17 PM

What a beauty. Reminds me of the race-prepped (British) Ford Escort 1600s I pined after growing up.

Since we're talking Italian cars, anyone happen to have a Lancia Delta Integrale HF they're willing to part with...? <sigh>

Nice find. I like it.

Wow, $5500 is a great deal for everything you got! Have fun with it, makes me think twice about getting a miata!

Cool little car. Congratulations!

Every time you get in it say to yourself, "momentum". ;)

The funny part is, back in my "youth" I owned a 1986 Yugo. It was my daily driver in College, and weekend autocross and track car. For those that don't know, a Yugo is built almost entirely from Fiat 128 mechanicals. My little Yugo had a 1500 X1/9 engine, cam, twin carbs, etc. Very similar setup to the 128 i just got. So in reality, I learned to race small, underpowered, front wheel drive cars.

Here is my wicked little Yugo from back in the day:

I'm looking forward to this weekend, and getting started on the Fiat.

Whilst I agree that it is a masterful piece of engineering, there is something about it I find a little disturbing!
Draken 06-28-2006 03:47 PM

Looking back, I realize how many things could have gone wrong...but...

8,000rpm in 4th gear = 128mph. Yes, that was with the trailer. Ah, to be 18 again.

Chris H.
sachilles 06-28-2006 04:55 PM

We had several guys autox/hillclimb the yugos up here as well. Very well suited for the smaller courses we deal with up here. Very humbling getting bested by a yugo, no matter how many fiat parts are inside.
Hey Chris -- remember to call Sam Strano and have him "engineer" a nice big front sway bar for you.

Sean
Bastard!

It actually has the 22mm 128 Wagon front bar, instead of the stocker 17mm bar. It also has a 5/8" Addco rear bar. Maybe Sam helped to design that?

I got the front konis out last night and the coilover kit installed, and back in the car. I raised it just a smidge in the front, but still need to adjust toe. I also got about -3 degree camber in it, yet can take it back to -1 for the Bias Ply tires. I'll probably mess with rear ride height this weekend, and get it all setup.

Everything is so dinky on this car, in comparison to the STi. It's like the Tom Hoppe of cars.

When's the T67 going in?
Skibum4444 07-01-2006 02:23 AM

Do you fit in it?
Draken 07-06-2006 11:45 PM

I've been doing a few little things to the Fiat this week. Reworked the front spring rates and Koni valving, raised the ride height a touch (based on my roll center and camber curve calcs) and repositioned and upholstered the Ultrashield Race seat.

Oh yeah...and I found a set of Panasports for it. Fronts are 13x8 with ears at 13x7. Tires are Kumho V710 in 215/50-13 size. We chemically stripped the wheels as they were slathered in hideous yellow paint and clowdy clearcoat on the lip. Decided to go with white centers and polished lips.

Soon to come...some old skool white vinyl "meatball" number circles for the doors and hood with magnetic numbers. I'm hoping to match up the dark red to a standard vinyl. Big thanks to KC with www.rallydecals.com for helping me out with these.

Quick snaps during the test fit:

Next step is to get some long wheel studs and nuts, to replace the wheel bolts.

I see you've also de-catted the exhaust too, that should net you a few HP cause of the freer flow, right? How hard was it to remove the cat from the car? Did it require a lot of sharp tools? Spinning blades? Did you get scratched?
sachilles 07-07-2006 10:25 AM

Meant to ask what you run for brakes on it? Typically, that is the area for biggest improvement in the vintage stuff. It also tends to be worth while to rig up some brake ducting if your club allows it.
Draken 07-07-2006 11:17 AM

Ha! Pumpkin the cat loves cars and motorcycles. She usually helps by sleeping on tools, standing directly where I want to stand, or better yet, crawling onto my chest when i'm upside down under the STi changing downpipes. She's so helpful.

With regard to brakes: Car received brand new components right before I picked it up. New calipers, new Ferado pads, new stainless lines, and new slotted rotors. Rear shoes are new and the drum was slightly turned. These cars have always had very good brakes, imo. My Yugo ran a few track days at PIR (Portland, OR) and never had issues even with original components. I did get a box with brand new brake ducting hose, so I might fab up some receivers and install them. Most of my events will be at places like Thunderhill and Reno-Fernely, which have some nice braking areas.

Now...to find extended M12x1.25 wheel studs

Draken 07-23-2006 12:42 AM

OK...first event under our belts! Sean and I met up at the 10th Annual Fiat/Lancia gathering in Oregon. They run a small track day at a big outdoor Kart track outside Medford, OR, among other activities. Besides a few trips around the block, this was my first real time in the car. Overall, I'm very happy. The car performed great, and only a needs a few mechanical tweeks to get it ready for the next event. Overall handling was 98% spot-on, right out of the gate. I guess my ideas on shocks, springs, bars, and alignment worked out. The biggest things I learned:

1 - even 100hp can spin 215/50-13 V710s coming out of 2nd gear corners

2 - Ferado pads are stupid dusty, as witnessed by the dirty front wheels that started the day off white

3 - finishing second overall, less than a second behind an ex-Dallara Fiat X1/9, is a lot of fun

4 - straight pipe side exit exhaust, with 8,000rpm echoing against the nearby hills = awesome

Here are a few snaps. I'm the Great Kazoo in the white helmet, and Sean is the handsome fella with his silver/black full face helmet:

that car looks awesome! did you also consider karts since you were going small, so to speak?
JoshS 07-23-2006 01:57 AM

Chris, looks awesome! Always liked the old Fiats. I had an X1/9 back in the day.

Twice I travelled up to that Medford, OR kart track for their annual "endurocross." Had the track record for Formula Ford there, I wonder if it still stands. I think I set the record in '94, maybe '95 ...

Enjoy the car, it really does look like fun!
Draken 07-23-2006 01:35 PM

I never considered karts. I wanted something street legal, so I can have a weekend put-put. There are times when I don't want to ride my little motorcycles, and this is proving almost as much fun :)

Just got the vinyl and magnets on the hood. It's starting to look more like a race car.

Sweet. A mechanic around the corner from where I lived was restoring one of those for months when I was a kid. I ended up riding along for the test drive. Nice to know what kind of car it was. I was too young to know the difference. Kind of forgot about it actualy .. l aways admired it though!

Nice cars.
