Yeah, they don't exactly last a long time. However, the gearing is the most significant part of those tires IMO. :)
I probably wont get out of 1st gear with my full tread MX's.... ;)

i was getting my info from a friend of mine who talked to the guy from boxer4racing at a 24 hour event in winston a while back. was that you Tom?

That was me. That event was also a few days before nationals when we didn't know as much about those tires as we do now.
If the people @ Falken were REALLY paying attention, they'd have kept the selection of 16" sizes the same as the 215's or better yet...increased them.
 @ Falken. :(
-mykr.
They are coming out with other 16" sizes, just not for the release of the tire. I think 225/50 comes out in the 2nd quarter.

Ordered the 255/40/17's for my wagon ...

245/35/17 shaved 451's in this shot, on 8.5" Slipstreams. The 255/40's will be about 0.4 inches wider then these 245'3 ... and the same heights as 225/45/17's. Unfortunately the AX courses that I first got to run the short 451's on were very fast. My buddies STU STI was going through the finish in 4th at 85 mph! I was in third and a second back. Usually we are much closer in times.

Mako,
How much camber are you running?
Oh and I'm confused; did you get a set of the short tires and only use them for one event?

With my modified Noltecs and double camber bolts in front ... +6 caster and about -4.5 camber. -1.2 camber in the rear ... added 5 mm spacers in back. I didn't use my 15 mm H&R spacers in the front.
Got the 451's shaved to 5/32nds ... and over last weekend we did a ProSolo practice on Sat and a Solo2 practice on Sunday ... both at Qualcomm Stadium.
I had my new jdm front STI helical LSD ... certainly helped ... but Ken Motonishi and I both felt that on that (cool) asphalt surface ... the 451's lacked grip. Ken would get my wagon into some pretty lurid long slides ... while he felt he had more grip in my friends very mildly STU prepped STI (jdm Pinks, sway bars, turbo back and 245/45 Azenis's).
We had hoped to reach a conclusion on what new spring rates to go to. 550 in the front ... but we still aren't sure how stiff to go in the rear. We are probably going to wait before we change springs until we can test the car (w/ new front LSD) with my Hoosiers.
Here is a shot of Motonishi drifting my friends STI before the finish line of Sundays Solo2 course:

Ken was about a second faster then we were with our own cars, on this long course. Our times were in the 66, 67 second range ...

makofoto - So you didn't like the Fk451's when compared to your 225/45-17 Azenis RT-215's on asphalt? That's good to hear I guess. Running more camber with these than when you had your Hoosiers as well... any reason for that?
If you could, please PM me your source for the Fk451's shaved. I'm considering trying them out for a good part of my local asphalt season. Unless I just get some r-compounds and throw caution and STX to the wind. :D

To me the FK451s aren't worth the expense for local events. It's just not enough runs for the money. The grip is nearly as good as an Azenis and the gearing and short sidewall make for a nice overall combination. (I say this having driven on both.)
I'm not even sure at this point that I'll go for the FK451s for big events.
Mako,
Nice shot. I need to email you as I have a question... :)
you're bitching about $78 a tire??????????
 even tires for the Miata are more than that
Me thinks he bitching about an 81% increase in tire costs. That really hurts a budget racer.

forgive the OT, but what foglight covers are those? Are your foglights taken out as well?

They are cheap replicas ... the STI ones are SO over priced! I think I got them from Kastle Korner ? No Fogs ...
One of the benefits of not getting Azenis like grip on our local asphalt with the 451's is that I'm going to get a lot more runs out of them. I did something like ten 30 second ProSolo runs on Sat and eight 67 second runs on Sunday ... and I've got a ton of tread left. Started with 5/32nds. I got my 451's through America's Tires ... and had to drive about 100 miles both ways ... twice ... to take them to Trackside Performance (Yokohama Racing Tire importer) in Orange County to be shaved. At least they only charged me $60 to shave them ... including dismounting the tires and then remounting and balancing them. I didn't realize that tires usually need to be Not Mounted for shaving.
The long drives to and from Trackside Performance allowed me to go by Suby Sports in Huntington Beach ... where I bought a Cobra Suzuka GT sport seat. About twice what I was planning on spending for a seat ... ... but it's very popular in our local AX circles, ie. proven performer.
