Anyone have details on the engine they've got in there?
Sounds like it is has:
-a dry sump oiling system
-spinning to 8k
-Higher compression
What else?

The engine for #26 began life as a 2.5L dual overhead cam engine. Although I don't think that engine ever was presented in America in the Impreza RS, it was sold in New Zealand, Austrialia and other countries around the world, thus it is legal for World Challenge.
The engine has been stepped up to a 13.0:1 compression ratio and has a set of cams that was developed by our friends in Indiania and have been registered with SCCA Pro. We are also looking at changine the intake manifold, but again with the new rules that everything that goes on the car must be commercially available for a 14 day purchase lead time, we have to get this to SCCA Pro and get their approval.
The chassis is a stock Subaru, right off the assembly line that we have lighten as much as possible within the rules of World Challenge.
We would love to bring back the car #95 in a turbo configuration and SCCA Pro has said that they might consider, later on in the season, allowing the "forced induction cars" to take to the track in promoter test day and practice day but not in qualifying and definately not in the race. We want to race the Turbo, but we would like to know that SCCA Pro is taking a serious look at bring the "forced induction" cars into competition. It would make the series really more interesting with the Mini-Cooper, VW and all the other cars that are under 2.0 liters
You can help by lobbying for it whenever and wherever you can.

In 1998 I believe that all the 2.5L engines in the US were DOHC setups. I know for a fact that the 98 RS's were, I am fairly sure that the Legacys had them as well, and I am just assuming on the Foresters. In case anyone feels like arguing with you. :)
I'd love to hear this car scream... is there any testing footage or anything available?

The '99 2.5 RS was DOHC as well. The MAF switched from hot-wire to the problematic hot-film. In 2000, all the 2.5l engines switched over to the SOHC format; with a MAP sensor..

Yeah as others have mentioned the 2.5L did come over in the DOHC configuration for awhile, I happen to own an RS with one
I have heard from many that the intake is the flow limiting factor so it seems you are headed in the right direction on that, I dont know of anyone manufacturing a new intake though, although if anyone did their is a small but definite market.
One thing you might look into is phenolic resin intake spacers. After putting these on my engine unconnecting the throttle body coolant passage and building a cold air box, my car pulled significantly harder and was much, much more consistent in all temperatures. Since the runners are so long on these engines I think intake air temperature is heated much more than on other NA engines.
Sound clips or any in car video would be awesome, I would love to hear this car.

Supposedly some of the early 99's were DOHC as well, but for the most part they were indeed phase II SOHC.

I will take the cassette recorder to Atlanta for the upcoming race on April 24-25 and see if Mike can take a few laps with the recorder going in the car and then I will get it to our web mistress and see if I can get her to post it to the web site. The revised web site should be posted within the week. I will pass the comments on the intake manifold along to the fellow who is working on it for Irish Mike.
Contact SCCA Pro, P. O. Box 19400, Topeka KS 66619-0400 if you would like to drop a note to them about the forced induction.

You are correct. As I was typing it, it didn't seem quite right to me...

Yeah! Phenolic spacer! Are you allowed individual throttle bodies?
| roadracer | 04-01-2004 02:18 PM |
Yes, Irish Mike has already sent the entry fee in for the Drift Atlanta, what they call the new tuner-focused weekend. With a first place guarantee of $10,000.00 it makes it worth while to get to Atlanta. If the car performs like we think it will, this should be a good showing for us. Atlanta was our only finish last year.

I'm guessing that since the intake manifold isn't yet replaced, that they'll need to sell it for a few weeks beforehand, it'll need to be at least halfway user-friendly for consumers, which an ITB setup wouldn't really be in an RS (stupid opposed cylinders!). I'm guessing that they could, but that it'd be too tough for the gains (if any).

not faililar w/ an RS the intake ports are not on the top?
I was imagining 2 banks of ITB's w/ 2 cylinders each. maybe w/ eletronic throttle bodies
