Overview:
Technically challenging, yet effortlessly fluid roads help make this event a favorite for drivers. Located in northern Minnesota's lake and vacation country, a large portion of the rally ocurs after dusk, which makes for some great nighttime spectating. Glowing brake disks and intense rally lights make watching rallying at night a surreal experience.

The Ojibwe Forest Rally is held in the scenic 10,000 Lakes region of Minnesota, near the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Itasca State Park. The course will traverse the picturesque and challenging roads of the Paul Bunyan, Two Inlets, Smokey Hills, and White Earth State Forests. The rally is headquarted at the Northern Inn in Bemidji. The area is not heavily populated, thus large swaths of lakes and forests compose most of the scenery.

This course features smooth, fast, and open roads that can be soft and sandy in spots. This rally is not a car breaker, but the roads are demanding. Many drivers consider these roads their favorite rally roads because of their flowing nature and smooth surface. Great summer weather and prime spectator locations make this event worth the hike north from Minneapolis.
Huge argument? Don't post this with no explination available.

I tried last minute shopping for a cancelled room and while I got one at headquarters, it wasn't any better than the rates I saw weeks ago. :(
thechickencow 08-22-2006 04:42 PM

I'll be there codriving for the first time (with fliz).

I'm used to driving the stages so I've got a few questions for you codriver types:
-What is the best brand of short sleeve button shirts
-Where do I get bow ties
-Are pocket protectors mandatory?
-What is the required number of pencils?
-How many hilighters do I need?
-Whats the best brand of puke bags?
-Should I bring a headlamp as a backup light if chad's dies in the car?

All seriousness, I may need a bit of help although I think I've got a decent handle on it. If you have any tips for me I'd appreciate it.

- Anything polyester will do in a pinch.
- Only if you have an engineering degree in civilian life.
- No pencils. ONLY Staedtler 780c 2mm leadholders. 4.
- None. Underline instead. (Alt. 4 if you're one of the fancy AG/NR types...)
- Chili dogs are delicious and I once ate two at the green at STPR.
- Yes, a headlamp is useful for looking under the hood, checking tire pressures. For a backup reading light, I actually use a 3xAA cell Maglite, because you can easily jam that between your head and the helmet liner on stage. Yes, I've had to do that.

And I'm serious about the leadholders. I'll PM you my cell phone number. Call me if you need anything during the event. Oh yeah, and don't f*ck up the road sections. (There's a good tip!)

so THATS what this is.

I somehow have a long box of staedtler 2mm pencil lead and had no clue what or where I got it. musta been from a previous codriver who left it in one of my cars.
bjorn240 08-22-2006 05:28 PM

If it's B or 2B, I'll pay you good money for it.

Little bit of bragging here. Much like Mugatu invented the piano-key necktie, I introduced 2mm leadholders into American rallying.

oh, and zoolander has to be my favorite stupid movie of all time.
bjorn240 08-22-2006 05:41 PM

HB is too hard to use in rallies, unfortunately. But a whole 12-pack, that's a good Hannukah present for your local draughtsman!

And now la pollovaca (as I like to call him) knows more about co-driving than he ever wanted.

I think it's a good addition to the other information out there. Most of the other info is "Here's what you need to know before you go to a rally." Rob's info is really a primer on what to do in each portion of the rally. The control information is great.

Oh, and Greg, we're starting the trash talking nice and easy, but I suspect that by the end of the year, Ken and I will be slinging mud basically full time. Now, if we could only get our better halves in on the action. (Yeah, no, that came out weird; I didn't mean Ivy and Lucy...)

- Christian
RichardM 08-23-2006 10:39 AM

Now Christian, you know in a battle of words, a driver is always at a loss to a co-driver. Especially in my case as I am married to my co-driver. So wait until Alex weighs in on this discussion.

Shawn - are you still driving around the U.S.?????
How many Red Bulls has it been since you left home?
bjorn240 08-23-2006 04:22 PM

Outnumbered, but _still_ not outwitted. Alex, you do realize that by the end of LSPR, you won't just not have caught up to me, but you'll have just celebrated Travis and my winning the championship? 1st at Ojibwe, 1st at Cog, and at least 2nd at LSPR, and we're mathematically unbeatable.

No pressure or anything! :) Good luck, boys.

GO KEN! (Travis too)

p.s. - Ken - when do snowboard boots start shipping?
thechickencow 08-25-2006 11:24 PM

I can only update on us, which isn't much for most of you.

We started the rally today, but DNF'ed on the first stage. We blew a cv joint on the driver's side axle and couldn't continue, the car wouldn't move at all. It was still in the bemidji speedway so it was pretty crappy that we didn't get to any actual stages. We've got the damaged axle replaced and should be ready to go for tomorrow, hopefully it'll go better for us.

I don't know a lot more about anybody - we see Otis Dimiters at the hotel here, they ran out of fuel on a stage (I don't know any more detail than that). The RA site shows KB is out, not sure why though or if thats even correct at this point.
What happened to Eric?
CV exploded before the expose and he was very late and got a penalty and then stopped on SS3 to make repairs and then lost 4th and 5th.
WRXedUSA 08-28-2006 01:32 AM

Congrats Travis/Christian. Car looked clean.
thechickencow 08-28-2006 04:45 AM

Saturday turned out to go better for us, but not without a little bit of trouble.

After DNF'ing on Friday with the blown CV at stage 1, we started Sat.

On the transit to the first stage the car stopped running. We got towed to the fuel splash service at Itasca by #319 who was already running on 3 cylinders. We had about 25 minutes to fix the unknown problem. Chad and crew did a great job of diagnosing and figuring out it was a bad coil/bad connections of wiring to the coil. We plugged in the other coil, zip tied it to the strut bar, and went on to rally.

On the 3rd stage of the day the problem came back but we messed iwth the wiring and got it going. I think we lost about 5 minutes doing that on that stage.

Chad drove well, seemed to get more comfortable each stage and got faster. I think he was very happy to get a finish after the DNF on Friday. I personally was very happy to be able to codrive, not get sick, and actually had fun doing it. It is probably the best spectator seat in the house - being right in on the action is cool.

bjorn240 08-28-2006 10:13 AM
Congrats Travis/Christian. Car looked clean.
Thanks, Chad! The technicians said it was ok to bring it back dirty, but not wrinkly, so that's what we did.

Travis drove a great event! We really struggled with Ojibwe last year, so we had some trepidation coming in, but Travis developed and executed a good strategy for handling the loose surface on Friday night, then drove very safely on Saturday morning. We had a brand new focus/concentration technique we tried on the 22 miler, and we did try to turn it up a few percent there, since the stage was definitely going to decide the rally. Obviously, the trick worked, since Travis was committed and perfectly clean for all 22 miles! Just a really good clean stage. As Jay said, I had the best seat in the house, and it was a great show.

Really really happy to get our first Rally America series win. But most happy to drive a well-planned and perfectly executed event. Couldn't ask for more. Really fantastic!

Chad & Jay, congrats on your finish - many more to come! John, congrats on the 3rd in PGT and 8th Overall - very nice! Greg, it was nice to meet you, your wife, and the towheaded youngsters - quite the charmers!
