OLN Rally Coverage
Ive never in my life watched OLN but my dad was flipping throguh the channels one night and caught a sereis about the American rally championship
he called me up and said "Hey, turn on channel 60 theres a bunch of people off-roading cars like yours." I turned it on and it was pretty cool, im gonnaTivo it haha.
WRXMaster 11-12-2005 11:54 PM

Yea I saw the show too! It was awsome

Although I've been watching their coverage of Rally America, I really don't like it. IIRC it was only a 30 min. or 1hr show and seemed too compressed for my likingl. If they streched it out to 2hrs or 3hrs they could fit a lot more action in.

Just my .02

And they'd be paying 3x as much for those shows. This is the first Season for RA coverage, the first time on OLN, and a new production company for US rally, it will improve and already is an improvement from the old Speed show. Write emails to OLN saying ya love the show and want more. :)

I agree,

Sure it's not WRC yet, but I think it's great anyway. I'm still bummin that I missed the Maine Forest episode. Those sneaky scheduled times were for 5:00pm on Saturdays, except for Maine Forest and Ojibwe. Those are 6:00pm. I had my dvd burner set wrong and missed it.

Here's the schedule:

Sno*Drift - Saturday 10/08/2005 5:00PM EST
Rerun Friday 10/14/2005 3:00PM EST

Oregon Trail - Saturday 10/15/2005 5:00PM EST
Rerun Friday 10/21/2005 3:00PM EST

Susquehannock Trail - Saturday 10/22/2005 5:00PM EST

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb - Saturday 10/29/2005 5:00PM EST

DishNet's Loss
Booo, DishNet dumped OLN.

Double boo, since I heard that our dear departed wrecked WRX was featured quite sideways in the opening sequence for MFR. (which I have yet to see, thanks to DishNet canceling OLN.)

Did I mention that this ticked me off?

Good incentive to switch satTV providers.

Are you kidding? Nobody would watch that.. I don't think I'd even sit through that much coverage. Speed TV tried this in 2002 with loads of daily and weekly WRC coverage. [And Ralph Shaheen *shivers* ] It didn't work.

While the current Rally America TV production is flawed, 30 minutes is enough for a taste. An hour show would be fun but likely longer than could be supported.

hey i used to stay home on my friday night and watch it back then. 2 hours of WRC....hoe can anyone complain???
solbey11 11-13-2005 10:57 PM

I was at the STPR rally this year and while watching it on OLN I saw myself!!! I'm famous. I also agree that the time is far from being long enough. There is so much going on in one weekend, they really couldn't show everything. They mainly focused on the Group N class. There were over 50 cars at STPR this year and they probably show less than 10 of them on the coverage. But still, rally is rally. And Nascar sucks! I want more!

I also have DishNet. I wrote a letter to Comcast (ower of OLN) to tell them to lower the price demand for the channel so that DishNet could carry it without any additional costs. Hopefully if enough people write to Comcast they will ;lower thier price.

Living in 'Comcast country', I understand that they simply won't care. This will only help them get more subscribers to thier digital cable.

Anyways, I'm 100% satisfied with the OLN coverage, it's one hell of an improvement over a year ago! (No coverage?)

Plus, I got to see myself during the STPR too.

Beggers simply can't be choosers in this situation, you can't beg for more rally coverage and then whine because it's 'not enough'. Baby steps...

Tivo completely and utterly OWNS  its cheaper if you have like, Cox cable and just rent it from them for like 5 bucks a month. otherwise you spend a crapload of money on the box, then you gotta buy the service too. but if you can add it onto your bill then its the shizz

Cable DVRs are nowhere near as good as a real Tivo.

Colorado Cog Rally just started. :)
zoomfactor 11-19-2005 06:39 PM

So is that Mopho running away from the Pastrana wreck? Who else on here was in the Colorado Cog show?
Absubtle 11-19-2005 06:51 PM

They need to rerun that same rally now... now that there is couple feet of snow on the ground.. that would be wicked. I mean 8 cars rolled over when it was just dirt.... I like to watch them in snow....

I love OLN and just watched Travis's Crash... it was a nice STi.

fliz 11-19-2005 08:49 PM

I'm so glad I had to tape the rally this afternoon.

Just watched it. Travis' crash was amazing, especially in slo-mo. I'm pretty sure I'd be sick after doing something like that, he didn't even look like he was shaking when he got out of the car.
Absubtle 11-19-2005 08:58 PM

Looked like he shortened the corner and hit a deep ditch... and then...well rolled and rolled.
I'd be sick from wrecking a $60,000 car.

BlackAndBlue 11-19-2005 09:21 PM

I thought he ramped the corner after shortening it, not hittin a ditch
i like the advice they gave him, just dont look at it and it wont be as bad
I thought he ramped the corner after shortening it, not hittin a ditch

Perhaps, he did hit the hill at the corners' apex... that was funny to me too... at least he seemed like he actually cared about the car and the wreck tin -can... I know the race team has a larger wallet than most rally teams.. but he did seem affected about the tin-can, sitting on....I think only 2 straight tires.

Absubtle
PA
PS- I did meet Travis at SEMA and had him autograph his Subaru poster.. but it was more his presence that made me feel totally comfortable w/ him... I bull****ted w/ him for a few minutes, which was nice.. but it truely made me think this a true, genuinely nice guy.
Who else on here was in the Colorado Cog show?
We were in it for a few quick seconds. You could see me reading notes which was cool. :) I really liked the coverage this week. I think they showed a good range of cars in the event and really made a good showing for the event and rally as a whole! A lot of the Colorado drivers made it into the coverage which is awesome.

And Pastrana really is an awesome person. He is very down to earth and very easy to bs with. He also happens to be a very good rally driver.
FaastLegacy 11-20-2005 02:53 AM

The OLN coverage is alright. Too many commericials and they spend the first five minutes of every half hour show giving you "the basics of rallying". There's maybe 10 actual minutes of coverage and the finish seems to be an after thought.

Better than nothing I guess...
Ice racer 12-17-2005 08:36 PM

Hey guys,

I recorded every one of the Rally America programs on OLN but missed Maine Forest. Can anyone swap me for it? I have a fully edited 50 minute A.M.E.C. Ice Racing dvd [or any other Rally America episode] that I would swap. Take a look at the A.M.E.C. dvd info and feedback here.

This DVD rocks! I ordered a copy a few weeks ago and I've already watched it twice. Great edit job and lots of sideways action. Worth the trade if anyone has MFR (I'm yet another Dish subscriber that didn't get the whole series).

Gee I thought somebody here was recoring these to dvd like I was. How do you guys with DVR's save anything for the future viewing? I still love to watch my older 2001 season WRC tapes. I always enjoy seeing Burnsie winning rallies!

It hasn't been announced yet. I am sure as soon as RA makes an official announcement on their site, some one will post it here given the large number of rally fans here.
I have MFR, but I'm not sure how to get it off my TWC DVR. If you have any ideas on that, I'm happy to help.
If you have a video recording device (VCR, DVD recorder, or video recording card on your computer) you can plug the VGA output of the TWC DVR into the recording deivce and transfer it. From there there is a bunch of software out on bittorrent you can tranfer into a file like mp4 for you to email to friends.

It also might be good idea to invest in a bigger tv so when viewing your accident it doesn't look like a matchbox car flipping over and over :)

http://www.rally-america.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1356

The reason for the "delay" between the first event and its broadcast is to have a series of events on at predictable, uniform times as opposed to haphazardly scattered occurrences of some people driving around in the woods. For the rabid rally fan this may not be ideal, but the entire TV show is geared to bring rally to the masses. If the audience were just you existing rally folks there would be no TV. The idea is to bring in sponsorship to not only cover the cost of the TV program itself, but to provide working capital for the series. Until we achieve a critical mass of viewers the TV is a loss (ie: no sponsorship or not enough to break even) which takes money from other places where it's needed.

No details are final as of yet, but I would guess the TV programs won't air until they can be shown successively again. But that's based on what I was told last year when we discussed the schedule, so who knows, it may be different this year. You'll know when we know. :D

Cheers,
-Doug

Yes there's more than hope :). And those guys running around out there are TV2Go out of Canada. They get the footage (and do a fantastic job), then there's the whole interview/host thing, and post production. Each piece costs money and yes we're throwing down on it (at least the first two) without a signed TV deal. That's how confident we are that there will be TV coverage in 2006. But you just never know- some dude in a rally lookalike car might ram a busload of children somewhere and we'll all be unpopular before we finalize the contract :(

Have fun out there! (but stay away from buses)

^Sounds great- so for people like me who like watching it, sounds like my best bet is to keep searching every week or so for "RALLY" keyword in my EPG on OLN?

We'll make an announcement when the details are finalized, so you'll know within a couple of timezones when each program will air (soon as we have a signed contract). I'm sure it'll find its way to NASIOC and a few other places as well so no worries!

Cheers,

I understand that, but hopefully in the future if there's enough capital, something can be shown "halfway" thru the season as a teaser and as an informant for the rest of the show later in the year. Maybe a 5 minute clip shown repitively if not a full half hour or 2. If someone didn't happen to catch one of the first shows (a non rally person), they could have easily missed the whole thing since it started and was over in a couple of weeks. Just more food for thought ;)
mike270 01-24-2006 03:32 PM

Hey Doug, since you said "I will add that the 2005 TV program was well received, and we're looking to up the exposure in 2006" in the Rally America forums does that mean there is a chance we could be getting a full 1 hour of coverage of each event? :D

(I know you can't say anything about it but it would be AWESOME if we got an hour of coverage)
Coati 01-24-2006 03:39 PM

OLN needs to get their asses on HD. The Tour de France, Paris-Dakar, Rally America, all of it. These programs and their venues cry out for HD.

And pick up WRC in HD, too. :)
dch 01-24-2006 04:01 PM

Heh. All of those things, ranging from more "news" sort of coverage, length of shows, HD or standard format, are all being discussed. You'll know when we know. :D
