Oregon Trail Rally, April 22-24, Hillsboro, OR

Who's going?
Looks like one of the best fields in recent memory. The GrN deck is stacked, for sure. I'm excited to see how things shake out.
Here's the current GrN field: Pat Richard, Stig Blomqvist (yes, that Stig Blomqvist), Wyeth Gubelmann, Bill Bacon, Otis Dimiters, Ken Block, Travis Pastrana, Mark McDuff, and Fintan McCarthy.
And in Open, you've got: Jardevall, Havir, Plsek, Iorio, and Eklund.
And in the best PGT battle (evah!): Verdier, Foust, Johnson, and Penasack.
I'll be getting there Monday night. Staying at the HQ hotel.
- Christian
PS: To the congregation: "Can I have a sticky?!"

NC Rally will be there crewing for Otis Dimiters and Matt Johnson. We are excitied, it's our first West Coast event and is the furthest any of us will have gone for an event. I'm just as happy not to be the one driving the rig out there! I'm working on the Movement Plan right now... just don't tell my boss that's what I do at my desk!
Alex P - which of those few words did you find hard to spell? "running?" :p

You know? that's a really horrible chicken**** thing to say.

i simply dont have the money or sponsorship to run national :(

A bit of a cheap "pot shot" there...
**edit- Nice quick edit Jamie! inthe time it took me to write this you corrected what I thought was a bad reply. Good job. The first response was kinda bad so I will edit mine too.
there is no shame in running Regional, Subaru pays regional contingency too (which Jamie has a good possibility of taking some home)- that is what we did at S*D. Had we been running National, our plan would have been to sit back more on day 2 & quite possibly could've won PGT over Tanner as he had gearbox problems. Just didnt have the money to spend. That's just how it goes...
It will be a great rally, no doubt.

Come on now kids, play nice. One of the good things about Oregon Trail is that the Club and Pro guys all run all of the same stages, so it's easy for people to compare times.
All that said, I've got to think Verdier is going to blow the rest of the PGT field away. He is way way quick. I don't think Jamie would disagree, either.
Now, Group N. That field is wide open.

Christian,
Thanks for the post on Oregon Trail..It should be an event to remember.
I do agree that the entry list looks quite impressive. Not only will there be some great drivers, but some serious hardware present. Haven't seen nearly as many WRXs (especially in PGT) and STis on the list as this year. Many people have speculated on the outcome of the event, but as in years past, there will be some attrition. Very curious to see how things turn out...The addition of Stig Blomqvist should get the field pushing harder than ever. There are some young guns that will be pushing hard.. Oh wait, aren't you riding with one of them? ;)
Most everyone on this board knows that Jamie's not afraid of competition, it's just the out of pocket for the entry.. We can all compare stage times at the end of the day, and sort it out between reginal and national entrants if we care to do so. If my sponsors were paying for me to run the national too, I'd be running for sure (at least to spice it up a bit). Instead, helping sponsor the event seemed like a better thing to do since my business (www.allwheelsdriven.net , in Oregon) is rally based. Also, helping facilitate more people to get into the sport is a higher priority than taking home a trophy in the "national".. There *could* be some quick times from NW regional entrants too, this is our backyard after all... :D
Rally On!

while you are all there you have to keep an eye out for the killer V-8 powered '04 s-10 piloted by jim cox in open. it makes the most spectacular sounds ever heard in the forest. it is not a typical s-10. very custom. i had a hand in building it. and have driven it a few times for fun at rallycrosses. it sounds very different than the v-8 vette. and is much more than a point and shoot vehicle. oh and watch out for flying gravel. it may not throw as much as jardevall's old volvo but it would give it a run for its money.

Didn't hear about the roll, but I left about 2 stages before the rally wrapped up. I did witness a roll right in front of me on the Scotty's Jig stage, (Stage 16? )There's a few pics that I took from the rally over in the Northwest forum, http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=754190&page=2
Maybe I'll post a few pics over here as well. But that will have to wait until tomorrow.....sleepy time....

CONGRATS CHRISTIAN & TRAVIS!!!!!!! GREAT Freekin run!!!!!
D*AMMIT, I wish I could land an few grand more & I would so be able to keep the PGT car. :(
I wish Ken could throw me a bone & I would GLADLY run DC decals over every inch of the car. Hell, I would put temporary tattoos on my forehead if it meant I could keep rallying...

THE ROLLOVER
I am still not sure how that happened. but it did. and fast.
shame too as we'd just moved past Johnson into 3rd in GT :furious:
I dont remember the incident too well - but from what i can recollect,
i think we caught something on the outside LHand rear wheel
this unbalanced the rear, sent it careening to the RHside
where we impacted a huge ditch.
RHRear goes up in the air, nose catches and we end-o 1 time,
then roll onto Passenger side.
shortly thereafter the car caught fire, but was extinguished immediately
injuries
I was transported via the EMT's to an ambulance and all that, but am okay.
No major injuries.
We slid on the lid for sometime and in the course of doing so,
something came through the windshield and hit me in the face,
sounds worse than it is as I am totally fine.
My co-driver Matt, was completely uninjured.
The car can be fixed:
chassis and rollcage are good - most of the panels are toast.
This was my first big off. wow.
I'm glad it's over with and thankful that Matt is okay.
It was a fun run in GT with most of us (except Stormin' Norman')
trading times and having a blast all day long.
Fantastic to see so many fast, talented cars out in the woods
it was just frigging GREAT to have a full GT field!
Wish we had the budget to get out there
and run more rallies with these guys,
but this was good competition and good fun.
kudos
While i am at it i have got to thank www.pdxtuning.com ONE MORE TIME
for their fantastic work on the car, as my crew,
and for being there as friends for me when things were um....
a bit upside down ;) (yes... that's humor!)

Still trying to catch up on sleep, but what a fun event to watch and photograph. For me it was one of the better events in last couple of years. I still haven't watermarked the photos yet, but eventually a good number of my photos will be up on allwheelsdriven.net. Sorry to hear about Jamie's roll. She was really hooking it up all weekend.

Jamie,
Very glad that you and Matt are OK. :D Sounds like you have a little work to do to get it back in shape... You're not the only one..;) At least 20 cars had some sort of off or contact with something.
Lots of attrition this weekend for sure. Felt a bit better about our off after 8 people all offed a stage or two later. Glad that we could get the car back together for Sunday (up til 4am). It was a bummer to toast the new tranny (lost 1st) on the first stage, and slowly get it to the point of being stuck in 2nd gear. We ran three stages and all transits stuck in 2nd, just wanted to get to the finish. Had no idea about the results until this morning..
Rally On!

thanks Steve for coming out and for coming by and saying hi
it was GREAT to meet/see you...
i'll quote what i remembered mid day yesterday
(it was all pretty fuzzy at first)
we were on an up hill climb
Left 4
out stage was flowing, not pushing too hard
good stage going (great even)
apex'd where i should have
then....
next i know the car is literally in the air upside down
and the rocks are coming at my face fast
something must have hit the inside of the LH rear wheel
flipped us right up a launch pad and over.
the first point of impact was the front of the hood
then the a-pillars....
we skidded to a stop and landed on matt's side of the car
now if i could just figure out what went wrong.
i have no clue.
dont remember hitting anything
dont remember a bump or shove
must have clipped the inside of the apex a bit too much
and somehow that launched us out
car is a mess. but we are alright. it could have been worse.
cage builder has already inspected the cage
he says it's fine. most of the damage is cosmetic
but there's lots of it!!!!
if i ever get photos i will post a few.

Jam-
Dont sweat the not remembering the cause part. That is how the bigger wrecks seem to go. That's how it was for us in 03 at LSPR. I still have no clue what turned us. Seems to be normal for a roll when pushing.
Good luck getting it back together.

Glenn and JC,
Thanks for the kind words; I'll pass them along. It was a very smooth event from our perspective; the car was flawless, and we worked on having decent speed, while building experience and keeping enough in reserve to ensure no machinery in the greenery.
We were sad to see Pat go out early, as he really started turning up the wick on SS8 and SS9. I think there would have been a good battle between he and Stig.
And three Swedes on the podium. That was pretty cool.
Best,
- Christian

Rotten luck Jamie! Glad you guys are OK.
Keep us updated on the rebuild process. It doesn't have to look pretty so long as it goes!

Nice pic!
(can you e-mail me a full size one?)
This was pretty funny on the in-car, I think that was our 2nd run where we went very close to both the pond (in car crash video upside down in pond anyone?) and the fence..... that gravel was like marbles.
Hopefully someone got some video of our 360 on the grass at the super special.

Thanks! Shooting into the sun without everything washing out or getting nasty lens flare was a real challenge. Guess I got lucky! Judging by how some of the cars were pitching around the corner, it looked like it could have been very slippy out there. I'll work on getting you that photo soon.

The green open class Imprezza would be Gary Cavett.
It was too bad the CautionMotorsports 2.5RS is laid up with bum DMS (being shipped out shortly so that we can have it back out for Dryad in June). I picked up Ben Bradley's co-driving duties (while he played organizeer for Oregon Trail) and rode shotgun for Nat Stow in the CautionMotorsports Group 2 323 though.
Last year OT was my very first rally ever so it was a weekend of firsts. This year was not much different. First time on stage notes and first time seeing a red cross at speed. We had been dealing with fuel delivery issues all day and had finally shook that and were on, Nat driving, the car, my notes. It was rally nirvanna until we came across Jamie's roll.
What a sinking feeling. We could see the red cross as we came around a corner, seeing it rather than the person holding it, thinking we may be the first on the scene. I could have never seen a red cross and been perfectly content. Myself and the entire CautionMotorsports team is very happy that Jamie and Matt came out of the whole ordeal just bruised.
Also, a big thanks to Barrett at All Wheels Driven for the gas. The fuel issue just cleared itself out eventually. We think it may have been some water in the lines after having to drop the tank Saturday night and weld it after puncturing it half way through Saturday.
Always a good time out playing in the woods with our friends.

sorry to hear you rolled but glad to hear you are ok.
how did the cage hold up? any deformation? do you have any in-car to review if things are still fuzzy?
