Took off the top part of my STi wing...

I love the car, but not having the wing in my rear view mirror.
I finally did something about it.

Just photos here:

I am going to sell the 06 STi wing/trunk that I originally purchased to customize...and after UPS restyled the trunk I didn't do the customization. Make me an offer. Classified ad here:
http://www.justracing.com/classified/438
A few additional comments: Removing the wing was my original plan, but I then need to get a different trunk of the same color, change out the springs, and then if I want to go back to stock keep the original around. Storing the top half of the wing is easier than the whole trunk. So then I looked at trying to go the WRX route (also balances out the one over the back window), same kind of complications. I have heard that the wing is functional at higher speeds....and I have not ruled out using the car for track day use in the future. With my current setup I can get the top back in with a few screws and bolts without having to remove the base.

where did you get those caps from?

well, it certainly looks worse now. if that was the goal, you succeeded!

I would have gone with the Limited Rear Lip...
Nice creativity though, but not my cup of tea, sorry.

I made them, I couldn't come up with any better ideas. Appreciate the feedback, even if it doesn't work for you. Remember, my goal was to get the wing out of my rear view mirror, but also make it easy to get back to stock. So as it shipped was not working for me!

got this from the link above:
"I decided to cap the base. Fortunately I have a friend with both tools and skills. Very Happy We started with plastic, cut to shape and rounded the edges, installed some threads to hold them in place."

+1 for creativity
-1 for looks. I think the WRX wing is a nice-looking low-profile wing. Just leaving the bottom of the STi wing makes it look like some sort of altar.

Someone makes risers that go between the upper and lower parts to get the wing out of view. I don't remember who though...

that looks like the wing you see on Honduh ricers that goes up on both sides but doesnt connect in the middle... Actully now that I think of it, what is the purpose of that....
| ekw | 03-15-2007 08:57 AM |
actually, not that original -somebody else did this in 2003!.
think they made aluminum caps
it was not well received then either.
finally found it
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=413076
looks like most of the pics are gone, but you get the idea.
I'd like to try either a shorter top section or a wing w/ a 'hole' in the middle
for visibility. pardon the crappy rendering below.

I think if you wanted to be able to go back to stock you shoulda just found a wingless trunk lid and had it sprayed and then safely tucked the stocker away in your shop.

definately to each thier own...im not feeling any part of it though
| digitalboy40 | 03-15-2007 01:32 PM |
i'm not liking this setup too much. i'm with counterfit on making it taller instead of what you did. i know chargespeed makes a gigantic wing that goes to almost the roof level, but that might be a bit overkill.
| SQ3.0dotJP | 03-15-2007 01:42 PM |
they also make an extension that uses the factory bottom. but that there is just. ugh

you know i kinda like it

| Lambu | 03-15-2007 04:38 PM |
i like ekw's idea for a shorter top section, like maybe have the plane sitting right where the lower section ends.
but as it is, uhh, not my bowl o' soup but its your car so as long as you like it.

it looks way to riced out neon / riced out civic wing to me, if you're gonna go for a more subtle wing than a STI wing, i think the WRX spoiler is the best around.

I believe that is the very picture!
I do not recall the underpants gnomes from the original thread,
but they probably said
1) collect the wing top sections
2) cap the lower section
3) ???
4) profits.
:D

I was thinking about doing this back in Nov/Dec of last year and was wondering how it would have looked. I'm surprised you had to take the entire trunk off just to get the top section of the spoiler off. After seeing it I think I'm going to look for an aftermarket spoiler with less rise than the stock one as a suitable replacement. I don't mind having a spoiler, I just don't think it needs to be so obscene for a DD. I wonder if anyone makes an aftermarket part that bolts to the OEM lower.

It's creative, but I think I would of opted for no wing or the WRX wing. I would suggest putting it back together and offering a trade online. I understand your concerns about the wing though. I am not a big fan of the stock STI wing myself. If/when I buy an STI the wing and the new ricer tail lights will be the first thing to go (if they are still around when I buy one).

I like it, you got what you wanted for a minimal investment, with the option to go back to 100% stock in a short amount of time.
Who cares if anyone else likes it? :D
Oh I forgot this is nasioc.... if it isnt overpriced, its not cool! ;)
