If SWRT installed a 'roo catcher on the car for this rally, Petter would hit an Emu.

Is Seb back?

Atkinson on home turf... Expecting a good result from "Sir O-Face." Petter hits a dingo between stages and breaks his shifter.

Nutahara has to finish. Then, it's up to Al-Attiyah to win it in New Zealand. It will be tight, but Nasser has always been fast there.

Looks like Atkinson rolled out.

Rally Australia is proving to be a tough challenge for the cars and drivers, with many retirements and accidents affecting the top drivers this morning.

Petter Solberg (Subaru)
"The first two stages this morning were very difficult and extremely slippery. We changed a few things with the set-up as we went along and they seemed to help the feeling of the car. It's good to be leading but it's too bad about Chris, he was doing very well and I think would have had a great result here, but that's how it goes sometimes. For us, the focus now is to keep on pushing and try not to hit any kangaroos."

Chris Atkinson (Subaru)
"We had a good start to the day, especially with the first three stage wins. The fourth wasn't so good though as about halfway around a medium-speed corner the car stepped-out just a bit and dug into some soft sand. We got stuck and it wasn't possible to get back on the road again. As we were trying to sort that out, the hot exhaust lit some small shrubs at the back of the car and we had a small fire to contend with. We got it out as quick as we could and the damage doesn't look too bad, but we'll need to look it over properly in the Service Park. It's disappointing, of course, but we knew we were pushing close to the edge; I guess we just went over it.

"

Marcus Gronholm (Ford)
"I hit a stone on the inside of a slow right bend and the impact threw the car across the road and I rolled over the bank on the opposite side. The car rolled once, it was slow and soft, and ended on its roof. We pushed it back onto its wheels with the help of two or three people but then it became stuck on a tree stump so we had to jack it up to get out. We were stuck for about 10 minutes. I made a stupid mistake and I'm so disappointed."

"It was hell inside. We had so much dust in the car that I couldn't breathe and couldn't see. My eyes hurt now and I also hurt my back trying to push the car over. Now I will just try to finish and score points for the team in the manufacturers' championship."

Mikko Hirvonen (Ford)"There are no words to describe how slippery this gravel is. It's just like driving on ice. Winning is a possibility but I need to find a balance between fighting for first place and finishing. There is no room for error now that Marcus has lost time and the pressure is on because I must score good points for the team."

Overall After SS8:
1.P.Solberg - Subaru - 59'00"1 :D
2.Hirvonen - Ford - 59'01"4
3.Pons - Citroen - 59'45"9

Weasel 555 10-27-2006 08:27 AM

"Doh" !
BP Ford team leader, Marcus Gronholm has practically thrown away any chance of taking the 2006 drivers' title, after an error on the first 'proper' stage of the Rally Australia.

Gronholm began the day in P1 after having won the two super specials on Thursday night. However it all went wrong for the Finn just 5 kilometres from the start of the first run through Murray North [SS3], when he rolled his Focus. Although the car did not suffer mechanical damage, the accident cracked the windscreen and broke both side windows - costing him over 10 minutes and dropping him down the leader-board.

Gronholm and co-driver, Timo Rautiainen taped up the windows as best they could, but it was impossible to prevent choking brown dust from infiltrating the cockpit and they had to tackle another 70 kilometres of competition - SS4, SS5, SS6 and SS7 - before returning to the mid-day service for repair.

Gronholm finished the morning in 40th place overall and although he made up ground in the afternoon and won the final two 'proper' tests, he is still well outside the top ten.

Wow, just wow. What a rally so far 6 out of 10 WRC cars out already and its only day 1!! Drivers described the gravel like "Driving on Ice".

I just hope Gronholm can pull some magic outta his ass and come in 4th.

Although I'd like to see Hirvonen win his first rally and Petter finish well too.

XenoWolf 10-27-2006 10:12 AM

Could you imagine a PWRC car taking first overall... or even taking podium? Damn! Go Toshi!

Actually... nevermind. I just realized that even with a 5 minute penalty (as per SupeRally rules), most of the WRC drivers who re-enter won't have a tough time overtaking the Production boys.

thats 5 minutes per every unfinished stage, so if one had not finished the last 3 stages the time penalty is 15 minutes.

Day 2:
from rally-live.com

After the dramatic start to Telstra Rally Australia it was a quiet drive in the countryside for the drivers contesting Leg Two of the final World Rally Championship event being held in Perth today. BP Ford World Rally Team's Mikko Hirvonen held onto the rally lead all day, while team mate Marcus Gronholm desperately climbed up the leaderboard.

Hirvonen started the day with a 28.2 second lead over Subaru World Rally Team's Petter Solberg. The running order dictated that Hirvonen ran after Solberg on the stages today so Hirvonen was able to pace his driving to keep the Norwegian at bay.

OMV Peugeot Norway's Manfred Stohl moved into third outright on stage 13, relegating Kronos Total Citroen's Xevi Pons to fourth. The most dramatic fall from grace today was that of Western Australian Dean Herridge. He dropped from fifth outright to ninth despite trying hard against the more experienced P-WRC regulars. Herridge's attack was greatly weakened when he lost fifth gear on SS18, in the final country stage of the day.

The biggest leap today was made by the Flying Finn Marcus Gronholm, who needs to finish third or higher to keep his championship hopes alive. He started the day in 18th outright and climbed up to an amazing seventh after claiming four stage wins as well as times within the top three on all of today's stages.
Weasel 555 10-28-2006 09:48 AM

chaddeus 10-28-2006 10:38 PM

if petter did not slow down due to the dust covering his vision, he MIGHT be at the top. But Hirvonen is driving well with a good car also so... he deserve his first WRC win

Subaru Junkie 10-28-2006 10:45 PM

3 more stages to go, I'll be happy if Petter can finish the rally in second and Hirvonen will collect his well deserved first WRC win.
XenoWolf 10-28-2006 11:19 PM
What happened to Nutahara and Arai?

Arai went straight on into a ditch in the penultimate forest stage of the leg and bent a steering arm and had a small brush fire. Although he managed to complete the stage, he dropped six minutes and retired at the end of the stage. Marcos Ligato inherited the lead as a result, and each of the P-WRC drivers also moved up one position. Both Arai and co-driver Tony Sircombe were uninjured.
Not sure what happened to Nutahara. Arai went off on the penultimate stage of Leg 2.
datageek 10-29-2006 12:52 AM

Both Scoobies, no mechanical failures. Petter may not have won, but I think the entire team should go hold a massive celebration. Petter even hit a rock, and the car didn't break.

Congratulations to Mikko on his first win. I've been rooting for him since 2003, so I'm really happy to see him get his first win. (Quite literally see him, since he was on the live camera the whole time.)

Congrats also to Jari-Matti Latvala for taking his first PWRC win!

I can't remember the last time I was this excited at the end of a rally. It's been a long, long time. Great event.

Well.... at leaste I am happy for Petter but that Ford WRC is really competitive!!

Anyway, look at Xsara. Not in Podium but when Sebastian is driving, its OMG... The car looks as if its the best and fastest car!! Sebastian just make it look so good! Seriously, I think Sebastian can take some Win even with a Subaru or any car.

In a way, if Sebastian is driving, we can easily bet that he is going to win and win!!

psg 10-29-2006 01:42 AM

Petter Solberg finishes in 2nd. Kind of disappointing considering Gronholm rolled it on day one and Loeb is AWOL, but I'm sure he's happy after all the terrible luck dating back to last year. Solberg sure did push Hirvonen, but he didn't falter.

Good rally.
WRXedUSA 10-29-2006 10:31 AM

I'm glad Hirvonen is doing well at Ford.
