STI and EVO the only rally based cars? part 2
i was more interested in current models....
we ran out of current models to discuss so we went back in time...

now, off on a tangent...

my list of 'almost owned' cars that fit the rally bred theme, in order...

1986 Audi Quattro Coupe - discovered the sills were falling apart
1988 Lancia Delta Integrale 8v - tranny was ruined, couldnt source another
1990 Subaru Legacy Turbo - insurance killed that one
1996 Subaru Impreza WRX RA - import didnt work out
1990 VW Golf Rallye G60 - supercharger required major work/couldnt source another

anyone else...

Well, in that case...

I've owned...

3 SUBARU RX's
1 WRX
1 2.5 RS
2 other older subie wagons
1 Legacy Outback

All of them could have been good or decent rally cars. ;)
Ok forgive me if this has been said already (dont have time to read all 200 replies!), someone said the cars arent rally based, the rally cars are street based, which I guess is somewhat true, but kind of misses the point. I would like to point out that when Subaru designed the original impreza, and the 2002 model, they went to Prodrive and literally asked "what do we need to do to make this a successful rally car?" The legecy, the company's main competetion car before the Impreza, was not designed this way.
I know Subaru asked Prodrive for advice on how to improve the car for rallying, but my statement still stands. They are still engineering a street car first, as that is where the 99% of production/sales is going (and don't forget they sell way more regular Imprezas than WRX's). If they were designing a rally car first they certainly would not be 3300lb 4-door sedans.
Even in group N a lot of parts are changed to make a STREET car into a rally car. WRC cars are even further removed from the street cars with modified subframes, engines moved from their original position, complete reengineering of the suspension, etc.

As for the turbo/awd layout, it is as much because of the Japanese obsession with awd and technology as any kind of desire to win rallies. You can practically get any car with AWD here ( I am currently in Japan). It is not so the case in Europe (where, generally, only more expensive cars are awd), hence the reason for the current WRC formula of allowing manufacturers to convert their street car to AWD for the rallies

The only time there were cars that were designed as rally cars first that were then converted into street cars, was group B. That was the whole point of the change in homologation rules, to force the manufacturers to produce, in large numbers, a road car first that was to be converted to a rally car.

Pardon me noobie here just wondering if the evo is using the AYC & ACD in the current rally race??? Or are they using just normal 4wd drive system ? Somehow i found that the evo its not as quick as before is it the driver or the car here cant perform to its 100% compare to the older days like evo 5 n 6.
