I lol'ed to that too
Ferg 01-11-2007 08:52 AM

They've lined up a nice little group of drivers for the 908.

Jacques Villeneuve
Sebastien Bourdais
Stephane Sarrazin
Pedro Lamy
Nicolas Minassian
Marc Gene

:D
10th Warrior 01-11-2007 10:07 AM

nice to see Sarrazin get a drive.
maxpower45 01-11-2007 10:12 AM

i've really got to pay more attention to this year's ALMS season. the diesel audi was a bit of a shocker when i first heard about it.

the peugot rocks...looks much more streamlined than the bentley.
GrantC 01-11-2007 11:32 AM

Fap Fap fap.... :o

I haven't heard anything about Peugot being in the ALMS. Just the LMS. although Audi just announced they would return to ALMS with their diesel.

Another interesting thing is that some of the Peugot drivers were the Aston Martin ALMS drivers. Is this a sign that Aston will not field a GT1 ALMS team??
RALLYT-WRX 01-11-2007 12:07 PM

Car looks great!

I wonder why they decided on a closed cockpit config.?

It would be nice if Peugot would run in ALMS, I am tired of seeing the Audi win. ;)
I wonder why they decided on a closed cockpit config.?
'06 was the last season that open cockpits were allowed.
RALLYT-WRX 01-11-2007 12:37 PM

In LMS or ALMS?
nKoan 01-11-2007 12:50 PM
'06 was the last season that open cockpits were allowed.
I thought the change wasn't happening till 08 or 09, but that Peugeot wanted to be ahead of the game and not have to change designs in a year or two.

EDIT: and that mandate is in LeMans 24 hours. I don't know how that trickles down to the LeMans Endurance Series or ALMS.
StuBeck 01-11-2007 12:56 PM

Looks sort of weird, the cockpits is so small.
nice to see Sarrazin get a drive.
ahh, I caught you looking at French cars :p

I think it's rather fugly myself. Agree that cockpit is out of proportion as is the nose. And I imagine it'll be whatever color the sponsors want. It's only black cuz it's unpainted cf.
Can't imagine it'll come to alms, since they don't sell cars here. The LMES has way more competition in the p1 class too.
nhluhr 01-11-2007 02:20 PM

that is a lot of carbon fiber.
JSC Speed 01-11-2007 02:57 PM

I can't imagine being in that tight of a cockpit. The heat will be overwhelming, and the ingress egress will be a nightmare! I personally prefer the open cockpit P cars.

As for the trickle down of LMS to ALMS: I doubt the American sanctioning body will deter or force the open cockpit issue, because manufacturers are designing cars the the 24 Le Mans, not the ALMS races.

I doubt this car is going to be any competition to the Audi. The R cars are so well sorted that it would take a remarkable drive by the French noobies to take the checkered first.
Thank you....I've always wanted to be part of posterity :D
I just think you're mistaken... but we'll see.

Peugeot has a history of blowing everyone away (especially Audi) when they're presented with an unlimited-class challenge.
Patrick L 01-11-2007 08:37 PM

Is that a LMP1 or GTP(ala Bently) class car. I thought that LMP cars had too be open top.
schaklos 01-11-2007 09:13 PM

For '07 there can be both open and closed cockpit cars in LMP1
I think there are some penalties to running closed cockpit this year as they are aerodynamically superior.

I don't like the Peugeot that much, it is nowhere near as good looking as the concept version was or their previous LeMans dominator.

The organizers do enjoy French cars winning though!
chadblock 01-11-2007 10:01 PM

i think the car is amazing, and the aero design looks to be efficient... all of the 06+ spec cars have stepped undertrays and different diffusers...

the closed cockpit cars typically run smaller tires... albeit more power and better aero design...

when we raced against the bentlets at sebring in 03, we could catch them everywhere, but theyd kill us on corner exit in the slow speed bumpy corners because they had traction control... ultimately we werent far off on pace (we se tthe fastest lap i believe).. .but the bentley was far superior on tire wear with TC.. audi claimed they didnt have it until 04, but they had it every year...

this car should be impressive, the line up is impressive... but audi's driver's (for the most part) have more endurance racing experience...

no offense, but i hope audi get's their ass kicked

RRR-K2 01-11-2007 10:22 PM

There used to be a rule that all the P class cars had to technically be 2-seaters; that even though there may not be an actual passenger's seat, two people had to be able to fit in the cockpit. ;)

Did they change that rule and I just missed it? Because, looking at those photos, it seems like it would be next to impossible to fit two people (side-by-side) in the cockpit of that thing. Heck, as JSC Speed said, it looks a little cramped for even one person.

Closed cockpit cars have to run an air conditioning system starting either this year or in 2008. There was a privateer Corvette team running a C5R outfitted with the AC system last year.

what would you prefer open or closed cockpit?

and he said "well, if im upside down, closed cockpit, if im rightside up on fire, open cockpit"

:p

Aren't open cockpit cars more comfortable for the driver and have better visibility in the wet? As for the AC system: Is it similar to what the Nextel Cup guys run? Cooler box with plumbed suits and such?

I think the 908 will give the Kraut a run or its money, and the French press (no pun intended) will have a field day with the coverage (Is Pescorale (sp?) still going to field cars too?), but the Audi crew has alot of experience and practice at running 24 hour races (I realize that Peugot has run and won before, but that was a different era).
StuBeck 01-12-2007 12:14 PM

I think the A/C similar to what the WRC teams run.

Open cockpit is more comfortable, and it offers more visability everywhere. I would prefer open cockpit more than closed, but closed looks coolr.

Take a look at the second pic, it seems like the driver is tight against the right-hand side of the cockpit so there might be room for a second person, if they're the size of a jockey.

An open cockpit car is more comfortable for the driver as long as it isn't raining. The AC system that will be used is not a cool suit setup like you described but an actual AC system that is small, not meant to keep the cockpit cool like a street car system but to keep the cockpit at bearable temperatures. Closed cockpit cars can see interior temperatures in the 140 to 150 degree range maybe slightly higher without this AC system.
Porter 01-12-2007 02:35 PM

I still think the prototype they showed at the Paris show was hotter.

There was a pretty good analysis of the 908 in a recent Race Tech issue.

I like the car. I think it looks a lot like a Dassault Rafale fighter. I would like to see Audi loose LMP. I'm all for the Corvettes winning in GT1 all the time though.:)

ALMS and the 24HR race will be very exciting this year.

Subaru_555 01-16-2007 10:29 AM

Innovation through technology. That's why Audi will keep on winning. Such a dialed in reliable setup with minimal stop time because of amazing fuel consumption. It would be nice to see the Pescarolo and Peugeot battle it out though. As much as I dislike American cars, I still root for the Corvettes.
JSC Speed 01-16-2007 10:46 AM
Such a dialed in reliable setup with minimal stop time because of amazing fuel consumption.
Even besides the fuel consumption, the fact that the Audi can have a transmission changed in, what, less than five minutes? The modular rebuild of the car is amazing engineering (I'm sure Peugot has a similar design though too).
Subaru_555 01-16-2007 02:33 PM

It's modular design is definitely important but it takes a super experienced team to replace parts in that sort of time.
Ferg 01-16-2007 02:39 PM

Didn't Le Mans ban the changing of gearboxes a few years ago in direct response to Audi's proficiency at changing them?

Sort of... :)

The rule now is that you can change the internal components, but must use the original case.

As good as the Audi boys are I don't think they'll get that down to five minutes.
pio!pio! 01-16-2007 06:47 PM

they changed the internals of their gearbox at Le Mans last year in 15 min or so!!!
StuBeck 01-16-2007 07:08 PM

Yea, its not 3 minutes like it was in 02, mainly because the smaller teams can't afford to do it.
scoobyRx 01-17-2007 03:10 AM

something tells me that if this is the only car with a roof, it'll be fastest because it's French. Then the rules will change for next year.
I thought ALMS used ACO rules?
That very well may be true. My point was that teams are building cars to compete in both races, if forced to choose, most (if not all) teams will choose the French race over the US one. So, the ALMS cannot shoot itself in the leg by disallowing a team that meets the other set of rules but not theirs. Basically I'm saying that the ALMS will incorporate the Le Mans rules into their own.Know what I mean?
