Team Darifftaaa presents: EZ do-it-yourself grille debadge!

Well, i know that some of you were thinking about doing this, so me and huy went ahead and did it, documenting the steps along the way! it's easy! with two of us, we did it in about 20-30 min. (this MAY get moved but i know that a few scic guys wanted to do this so it holds geographical relevance..). have fun!
First, you're gonna want to get that grill off! If you havent done it before, there's some cool little tabs along the top (4) that must be removed, along with the two main lower tabs reachable only by screwdriver. It should unclick fairly easily, and come off as one piece!
Here's Huy with the grille with the badge still intact.

Next, you're going to want to take the mesh off the grille. They're held in place by several tabs along the edge with little teeth in them. To make things easy, just take a small flathead and pull up and out. also, there are two small parts of the mesh fastened on each end, pull up on these guys to get the mesh out.
Here's me pulling the mesh tabs out with the flathead.

Now it's time to cut the emblem backing off. We used The Dremel moto-tool Type R with dual overhead conductors, but you can use any conventional dremel. we also used a flat-disc bit to get that precise and clean cut.
Our JDM-spec Dremel Type R

You're going to want to cut through a little higher than flush, for safety's sake, we'll sand down the rough edges later. as you cut, it can be tricky to get into the middle portion...at this point i simply took a hacksaw blade and cut the little bit left by hand.
Here's the inside, cut and ready for fine trimming before removal.

Huy-san with the whole piece off. but the rough edges remain...

At this point, we'll switch bits to a flat sand-bit. gently sand down the portions of the mounting plastic still remaining until flush with the surface of the grille.
Sand until Flush! The flat edged bit works well.

Once you've got a smooth flush edge, sand it down again with some small grit paper. Once that's done there'll be a discoloration, which we covered up with magic marker cause we're ghetto like that.

It's not a good idea to take a break during coloring to sniff the marker.

The finished product from the inside...

Now you can put the mesh back on, along with the tabs that hold it in. Then you can slide the grille back onto the car. Be sure to snap the lower facets into place first. Once this is done, you can put the upper tabs back into place!
it should give you a nice clip sound to let you know it's in. Note the Team Darifftaaa license plate cover.

And you're done! Make sure the inner part of the tabs twist in.

Easy now, wasn't it? Next week: TD installs a NA BOV kit! But not really. Enjoy kids.

Nice, But...

Nice job!! I was thinking of doing this when I first got my STi grill---THANKS, Subydude! ;) But, I noticed that the emblem backing/support thingy has a semi-important function.
1. Hides radiator support/hood latch mechanism, which:
a. Looks cleaner than w/the structures exposed
****b. Makes access to the hood latch release somewhat more
difficult. (helps prevent thieves from gaining access to
your car's battery or alarm siren wires).
I dunno if you guys thought of these things, but just pointing em out.
Peace
CL
