Pic. request-Trailer for tires/race gear....

I just ordered my Harbor Freight trailer(mini trailer w/12" wheels) and would like to set it up nicely in order to carry my gear to the autox's. I plan on placing 8 wheels. The first set are 275/40 V710's. The second will more than likely be a set for rain tires, those of which I haven't purchased. And if possible, a small tool box to carry a mini tool set, jack, tape, etc.
More than likely the tool box isn't gonna happen in which case I'll carry them in the trunk.
I was figuring something like this:
-------------
2nd tire rack
------------
1st tire rack TOOL BOX
--------------------------------<trailer floor>

was it the one with the open frame that's about 4x4'? on sale at $179? I was checking it out too....

Correct.
Forgive my rendition. I would be placing the tool box further back for weight distribution.

i just bought mine for one lap. i'll have two gynormous tool boxes, 1 spare tire, two 5 gallon fuel cannisters (don't rear end me). hope it all fits.
this is the best tire trailer ever, too bad i don't have the time/skills:

it's a modified version of the bigger HF trailer, i think 60" long.

A little off topic, but do you guys take off your hitch when you run at the track or Autocross, and if so, how hard is it? What hitch do you use?
I will be getting a trailer to carry the track tires & gear so I'll be wtahcing this closely. :)

i haven't messed w/ mine yet. i bought the subaru one because i was told it works well w/ the turboxs exhaust. i plan on taking it on and off. it's just 4 or 6 bolts, i'm hoping you can slip it around the muffler some how.
| mav1c | 03-14-2006 09:38 AM |
I just put a Hidden Hitch on my Mazda3 and it required using wire to fish the bolts through the bumper beams. I don't know if it's the same with Subaru's, but if you take the hitch off and the bolt falls into the bumper beam, it's going to be REALLY hard to get it out, so it wouldn't really be easy to take it off and on. Hopefully it's easier on the Subaru.
| trhoppe | 03-14-2006 10:02 AM |
Its a piece of cake for the subaru. 4 bolts from underneath the car that are very accessible.

Not on mine, I had to pull the exhaust off the hanger and it still took about an hour to put it one. PITA. Of course, this was at night and I had never done it before. I'm sure it could be done fairly quickly this time. The bolts are short and hard to get threaded once the hitch is up there.
FYI, the trailer above looks identical in length to the once I have. You have to remember those are SMALL wheels he has on there.
This is how I have mine setup.

Here's mine :D I was able to fit 4 245/45/17 V710's in the back. Put my toolbox, helmet and jack in the box. I'll be modifying it to fit the new wheels though. Don't think I can fit 4 285's across the back.

That's a bigger trailer than the HF one I purchased though......maybe longer or you simply made use of space very well.

I have the Subaru one, and I wouldn't think of pulling it off for events. It's a pain to mount, definitely a two person job. Why bother, it doesn't weigh that much.
That said, the SOA hitch is nice, and clears big mufflers.

So where'd everyone get their trailer hitch from? And how hard is it to take on and off? Is it something that could be done at the track or is it an hour job each time?
Thanks
Thanks
| lukerussell | 06-19-2006 02:08 PM |
you have to take all the muffler hangers off the hangers to give you room to work. the gas overflow box? black thingy has to come completely off. the tow hooks get removed. if you did it a bunch of times, you could probably get it down to 30 minutes. there are a couple steps that will require a helper or an extra jack (it's heavy).
i bought the oem subie model for the wrx wagon - it fits the STis and clears the turboxs muffler.

there is absolutly no reason to ever take a tow hitch off for a track day or autoX day.. they weight about 45 pounds max, which is unnessessary weight, but its not that much extra, and i highly doubt youd even notice it. it doesnt hang low or interfere with anything, only some aftermarket mufflers may rub, which a small block of rubber zip-tied in the correct location quiets the noise down(old steering rack bushing FTW!!)
stock mufflers fit fine, STI Genome didnt rub, Prodrive oval didnt rub, Stormung dual tip didnt rub, only the TXS Magnaflow did for me..with the OEM hitch.

The sprayer is just sitting up there cause I locked the box and didn't want to go find the key.
There are two more straps that will hold the Canopy and the cooler in. but I locked those in the box too.
Now the wire harness from the Trailer lights is really cheap, so I am going to have to pick up a new one on my way home tomorrow.

Are you kidding me? 45lbs is a crap ton! And 45lbs at the end of any car is just a waste. Would you add 45lbs to your bumper just for the sake of it?

Don't forget to take a spare for your trailer. Some of most clever ones I've seen have used the tow vehicles wheel bolt pattern on the trailer, to guarantee having a spare for the trailer.....mostly because the owner has a ton of wheels hanging around.
| Aaron B | 07-11-2006 09:16 AM |
Let's see, I put an Odyssey battery in the trunk so I could stop running the stock battery, which weighs about the same as the receiver, I don't run a muffler at all, which weighs less than the receiver hitch and I run an aluminum seat which is nowhere near as comfortable as the cushy stock seat at events to save a smaller amount of weight than what the receiver hitch weighs.
So, that weight's not important, huh?

| MFR Sweep | 07-11-2006 09:20 AM |
my hitch weighed aprox 15lb. I think the hitch on my truck might have weighed 45lb but that is a damn class III hitch not some dinky Class I
| Aaron B | 07-11-2006 09:27 AM |
The Subaru hitch is a beefy bastard. You could probably load up a trailer till the bolts rip out of the body before that thing ever thinks about failing.
| MFR Sweep | 07-11-2006 09:43 AM |
try the drawtite hitch. it was extremely light. although it is rattling a bit on my exhaust (stock). but only at 1000-1500 RPM. It really weighs nothing. I was holding it up with one hand while putting the bolts back in last night.
So for weight savings you guys may want to check this one out (if you don't have it already) it is the one that they sell at www.etrailer.com

It does not weigh anywhere near 45#, more like 20#. It's not designed to be mounted/unmounted, so if having 20# on the car is too much you might want to look into other ways to move your gear. Roof rack maybe?

or put your car on the trailer along with the gear.
Course I'm not all that fanatical about weight. I agree that it makes a difference, but it just isn't worth it to me. Hell If I cared that much about weight, I'd quit eating chicken wings, and drinking beer. I'm sure that would result in at least 20 lbs....and 20pts lower cholesterol.

i was making a point, if this was a full on race car, i wouldnt even consider a trailer hitch, as you need to save weight. but for autoX, i doubt your THAT good where the 30-45 pound hitch will make your car that much slower on the course. hell, a friend of mine out here has a hitch, and he was always the fastest car on the course in his class.. he wouldnt even consider removing it for every autoX..
have fun removing/installing yours, especially in rain, and then again in the winter series when its freezing out.
yes the weight matters, but i seriously doubt your gonna notice that much of a difference. i would even believe it would stiffen up the rear of the chassis a tiny bit.

For those of us without STi's spray down the Intercooler before/after runs to keep the heat soak to a minimum.
I use mine also for spraying down the tires, My Azenis' run fairly hot when the ambient temps are high. When they get too hot they don't grip for crap.

I ain't got no intercooler! But, I'll spray down the tires after runs. I race a street tire, and if they overheat, they tend to grease up and lose grip. And that's no fun.
