Powdercoating stock rims part 1

True06 01-17-2002 01:33 AM

Powdercoating stock rims

does anyone have any experience powder coating rims white? i have a 02 brp rs and i did a preview of what the stock rims would look like in white in MSpaint, and it looked off the hinge. but i dont know if powdercoating would make the rims as white or as clean as desired. any advice/help would be much appreciated,

thanks

I know brent (speedybrent) and Forrest (Exchangeguy) has got their stockers powder coated, they look sweet, brents dont look as glossy but still sweet, forrest's came out just perfct by my standards, ie gloss and color....they sandblast the wheel to make it easy for paint to adhere to, the color choice is all yours i think white shouldnt be a problem....should look good..

check out the "need photoshop help" in this forum (style and dress up" I'm thinking about the same thing, and some people have done mine.
Bigpants 01-17-2002 01:24 PM

I had my wheels powdercoated black and they have a much better finish then factory. Look great. PM me if you have any other questions or just post.

Sorry they are alittle dirty and old dig cam.
AK'S REX 01-17-2002 05:11 PM

That looks pretty damn good!! How much did it cost?? I'd be interested in doing that.
Bigpants 01-17-2002 05:55 PM

I had mine done for $14 per wheel, because the business I went to had never done wheels before. Most places around here charge around $45 per wheel.
redobs 01-17-2002 11:16 PM

How did you get your center caps black? Did you paint them? I ask because I heard you can't powdercoat them, because they're plastic.
Bigpants 01-17-2002 11:29 PM

Yes, you can't powdercoat them because the powdercoat paint which is really a dust must be baked on at something like 600 degrees. So I spray painted them gloss black. Matched perfect.

Those are slick. Nice wagon!

Cool! Thanks for the info. I'm picking up a set of black powdercoated wheels this month.
Samirr76 01-18-2002 12:21 PM

Black hi-temp spray paint with a clearcoat works wonders if you want to DIY. I have made other stock wheels blackusing this method and it doesnt seem to chip unless you rally on gravel roads ;)
wrxlvr 01-18-2002 01:39 PM

Yeah, I did that on my '91 Eagle Talon (LOTS of clearcoat), but I can't bring myself to do it on the WRX. I don't have any chips on the Talon though, and it gets Rallyed up my stepmoms driveway about twice a month

Thanks wrxlvr, I'm going for the painted side skirts next. Should I go OEM or just paint them?

do powdercoated rims scratch or chip easily? i wont be rallying for a while, just basically around town/highway driving, i dont want them to chip the first day.
Bigpants 01-18-2002 04:50 PM

I have only been on a few gravel roads since I got it done. So far no chips.

I have some white powdercoated rims...

I'm currently using '01 RS white powdercoated rims and they are really bright white.
typeRS 01-22-2002 01:20 AM

How much did it cost to have those RS rims powdercoated white?

Thats exactly what I want to do to my 01 RS..
128d 01-22-2002 10:27 AM

I had plans on powder coating them black but i decided to put it off till after winter. I found this one place in Indiana that will do it for really cheap. If I can find the site ill post it.
ImprezedRS 01-22-2002 10:43 AM

I took the cheap way and painted mine, but hey they are better than the stock was(stock ones are painted silver which chips easily). If if do it right and use the right primer on them the paint sticks very well. It cost me a total of $10 and about 3 hours of my time and you can't even tell the were done, they look like I bought them that way. Here a up close picture, the color is gunmetal. Also they are shiney but the 4 pot brakes put off a lot of dust.

Too bad I can still see dirt on them, I need to start carrying a rag to wash them when I go to the diy carwashs since there bruch won't get up in there.
Samirr76 01-22-2002 01:40 PM

IMPREZEDRS

What color and brand of spray paint did you use?

That look REALLY nice....u cant tell its a DIY job at all.

I am very impressed.
ImprezedRS 01-22-2002 02:16 PM

I forgot the brand but they sell it at Pepboys and Advanced auot parts. Its in a red bottle and says something like Truck paint. The color is Gunmetal. If you get it two cans should be enough to do a good job on all 4 rims, but make sure to get the sme brand primer and clear coat(optional).

Heres how I did mine:

1. take tires and rims off car.

2. Deflate tires all the way, do not braek the beads.

3. Sand surface of rim. Clean surface of rim before painting

4. Tape off tire with masking tape(reason to flate tire so you can get maskingtape in between tire.

5. Primer the the rim, 1 good coat should be enough, just make sure there is no bare metal showing. Lightly sand if needed after drying with 600 grit wet sand paper clean off rims before panting after sanding.

6. After primer is dried, mafe sure the rim is clean and the lightly apply the gunmetal paint(or other color) with about 4-5 coats.

7 lightly sand if need and clear coat.(optinal._)
Samirr76 01-22-2002 03:56 PM

that sounds great I would be able to skip step 4 though because I would do the painting before I get the new tires on the rims. :D
SubaruStu 01-22-2002 04:38 PM

You can check out how my rims came out in this thread:

http://i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=132491

I did basically the same as ImprezedRS, but the tires were already
off the rims. I used Duplicolor Wheel paint (WP-317 for gold). The
gold is a bit difficult to work with because of the amount of
pigment in it. My biggest enemy was dust! The Duplicolor paint
also says not to clear coat (???). Hopefully it will be more durable
than regular paint.

If I really like the look and it chips, then I'll pop for powdercoating
or do it myself with the powdercoating kit from Eastwood
Company.

Cheers...Stu

Sorry, I don't. I am waiting until spring to put some summer
rubber on them. It'll be a couple of months. Lots of time to
let the paint harden hahahaha.

I saw a picture here once on an unrelated topic. There was a
lineup of rally cars. A few of them had gold "stock" rims and
that's where I stole the idea from.

is there a way to get something powder-coated flat black, like the color of the tires? stealth mode on<--

But seriously, can you get them powder coated flat black?

SubaruStu is quite the artist....

How long did it take you? I just bought 02WRX OEM rims and was thinking of painting them anthracite for my 99RS.....

Was it difficult?

I know it is not a Subie, but I did paint the wheels on my 944 Turbo. They came out looking really good and have held up to the rigors and temps of track use. Sorry the pic is so far away, but it is all I have right now.

Those Look Great

I too am interested in the paint used on that red RS. I would like to do the same to my stockers for the time being, until I can spend the moolah on some 17's or 18's.

Can you give us step by step instructions? Did you take your tires off?

And I did basically the same thing, except I had the RE-92 taken
off since I am going to get new rubber anyways.

I got my weld wheels done in flat black for my nova. They look just like the silver rex wagon at the start of this thread. I didn't want the high gloss look for the car. It cost around $200 for everything, but I took the tires off the rims and glass beaded them myself. Then I sent them out. Darrin at specialty coatings in elderburg, md did them inside and out. The only down fall is I had to screw the slicks to the rim because they were spinning on the rim on launches. I've had these rims for6 yrs and never had to screw the slicks on, it broke my heart to drill them. As for the valve stems and screw heads," Krylon-ultra flat black."
Stealthbmbr 02-07-2002 11:31 AM

Evan j.
Stealthbomber is my cars name. Flat black paint, semi gloss bumpers, grill and chrome, flat wheels. If I had a scanner I would post a pic but...no one wants to see an old chevy nova here anyway. 10.40's and [email protected] on the motor.

Stealthbmbr 02-08-2002 08:55 AM

I wish I had a better pic of the nova. I have plenty at home but no scanner. It's pretty coll when you run your friends in the final. The picture at Cecil, My friend kenny won in class 2 and then I beat him in Class 1. It's pretty hard to be in the final of both classes in the same car. The picture at capitol, I drive the dragster for my friend Rob and beat his wife in the final. opps.
ImprezedRS 02-08-2002 10:46 AM

Hey Stealth my friend has a Nova and got Possi traction in it and now he is having problems with the rear axle moving on the leaf springs, have you had any problems like this or know of anything that could fix it? I think that he might need some traction bars or something.
Stealthbmbr 02-08-2002 01:16 PM

If the rear is moving on the spring, the locating pins have broken. If it is a mono leaf car than you have to replace the springs, as they are part of the spring itself. If it is multi leaf, the bolt that goes thru the center of the spring pack (under the rear perches) has sheared off. Hopefully it's a multi leaf, because the mono's aren't easy to get to. I've replace my springs 3 times in 10 yrs. It's pretty common to break them. It would be a good time to get traction bars now since you have to work on it. I recommend Competition Engineering slapper bars. I get consistent 1.42 60 ft times with them and a 10.5 tire. The front leaves about a foot in the air. I've used the Caltrac bars, but wasn't impressed with them. It just left to violently, 1.38 60 ft spinning.
bjteel 02-15-2002 03:14 PM

Should you use a high-temp primer? Should I even worry about a high-temp paint?

All I can find is Duplicolor Truck/Suv Paint in Gunmetal.

Should I use a clear?

How much do you have to sand? Do you only sand the outside of the wheel? Help, please.
biturbo4me 02-16-2002 05:33 AM

powder coating wheels

I have powder coated stock alloy wheels they will be very nice but
you need to get them sand blasted to remove all old color otherwise the powder coating will not stick well and the color will not be brite sandblasting for my whells cost $50 for all 4 and about $25 dollors per wheel to powder coat hope they come out
good see ya :)
RalleyeGuy 02-16-2002 11:37 PM

To whoever asked about powder coat chips and scratches, it won't happen. A powder coat is basically a plastic dust sprayed on that melts and self levels in the oven. People I know on SHOforum frequently get it done along with there intakes because of temp and scratch resistance.
variable 02-17-2002 01:04 AM

Hmm... I wonder if you could powdercoat the intake manifold... =)
