Race of Champions - 16 December!

The 2006 Race of Champions is coming up next weekend. http://www.raceofchampions.com/ Jimmie Johnson and Travis Pastrana will once again be representing the US. Looks like those of you who have HDNet will be able to watch it live, while the rest of us will have to watch it live on the 'net.
Their TV link shows ESPN2, but doesn't list any dates or times. The only thing listed is a "behind the scenes" show in February. W T F?! But thank God, looking at the ESPN2 listings for 16Dec, they've got 2 hours of World Sumo Challenge! :furious:
I don't understand why Speed TV isn't all over this. (Cue comments from someone about "Because all they show is stupid NASCAR. NASCAR sucks!" )

| Pua-STi | 12-11-2006 09:41 AM |
Yes, they build the track new every year, If you go to www.raceofchampions.com they have a little time lapse of them building the track. ESPN says Sam Hornish Jr. may replace Johnson.

The comment wasn't intended to start a debate over the possibilities of someone getting injured on a golf cart. I know its possible, it just takes someone with allot of ambition or intoxication to complete the task.
Back to the OP's topic: Scott would be a good choice for a replacement for Button.

Button is British though, and although he also needs replacing, I think they'd frown on an American driving for the British team.
It looks like Speed will be replacing Johnson, and James Thompson (BTCC) will be replacing Button.

He cracked two ribs at a kart race. Apparently its going okay, but he's been advised against racing and testing for the next few weeks, so he's going to take it easy and not do either.

F1 driver for F1 driver is what I was referring too.
Button was replaced because of an injury he sustained in a karting accident that has kept him from testing with his Honda F1 team.

Scott Speed is out.
Scuderia Toro Rosso driver Scott Speed has been forced to pull out of tomorrow's Race of Champions event in Paris following his Formula One testing accident at Jerez yesterday.
Although Speed did not suffer any significant injury in the accident, he has been forced to withdraw from the event at the eleventh hour on medical advice.
Organisers of the Race of Champions are working on a plan to bring 2004 NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion Kurt Busch to the Stade de France for the event, where he is being lined up to compete both in the individual event and the Nations Cup alongside American Rally Champion Travis Pastrana.
Kurt Busch ?! gag. If they must go nascar, go with Tony Stewart.
From what I read, Hornish didn't want to go because of short notice. What a pansy.
What's Ken Block doing tomorrow? send him over. Or Matthew Johnson or Tanner--they're both champions of pgt.

I say sending someone who know how to :
- change gears
- turn left and right
is imparative. It's bad enough we always get slammed over there (except for Canary Island).
Bah to NASCAR. There are PLENTY of good drivers in other series that would do a great job (Pobst, Said, Block, Shepard... etc)

Boris Said! now you're talking.

A lot of Nascar drivers are not able to compete in the event because of the lack of an passport. I remember watching the special on Speed when Jimmie Johnson was looking for a replacement for a sick Jeff Gordon. All the Nascar drivers he asked lacked a passport. He ended up with Casy Mears.
| bjorn240 | 12-15-2006 03:44 PM |
If you know the right people and have about $1000 you can have a passport in 24 hours. I don't think that's really a legitimate excuse.

I agree. This was the excuse given to Jimmie Johnson 2 years ago when they were at that Banquet in NY. Maybe it was just a long season for them, or maybe they didn't want to go to France. Casy Mears and Jimmy Johnson were both surprised to get an ovation when they were introduced. They had thought they were going to be booed because they were American.

Ok, people - Just got the word from Paris. The US team for ROC 2007 is:
Travis Pastrana &
Travis Pastrana
When Scott was injured there was apparently not enough time to find another replacement, so Travis will be pulling double duty. I'm glad he got some practice driving on tarmac with gravel tires at Wild West...
Oh, and don't worry, I told him he was representing NASIOC, Specialstage, and the pride of a nation. :)

You know how a lot of racers (and other athletes) have a clause in their contracts that forbid them from riding a motorcycle or flying a plane... I predict that golf-carts will soon be added to the list of taboo transportation.

Also, whoever owns HDNet probably has exclusive rights to show Race of Champions live which would explain alot.

Actually, and I may be wrong, NASCAR doesn't actually 'own' Speed. Rupert Murdoc does, and considering the fact that he made a fortune putting NASCAR on Fox, it only made sense to do the same for Speed.
