Brock Yates fired from C & D ?

A Few Words from Brock
Let's cut the ****. Csaba Csere claims I took "early retirement" from Car and Driver. Here's the truth. He came to my home and fired me. He said I was too expensive. A few days later he made me a cheap alternative offer that I refused. My long tenure with the magazine is over. Kaput. A cheap shot that will not be forgotten. That's the way it happened.

I'll miss his anti-nascar articles........

while i don't agree w/ half the stuff he says, he is pretty funny, and the only reason i ever read c&d.

I've gotten C&D for a while and I honestly never read his or most of the other people's opinions. After one of them told us not to vote for Gore because he'd hurt performance cars...and then Bush allows gas companies to yank up prices most of their opinions are null and void.

One word, "cannonball".
I swear he's been milking that one for as long as I can remember.
I stopped paying any attention to him when he suggested (seriously) that Indycars go back to a front engine format, with fenders no less, since no American car makers built mid engined cars.

While I didn't necessarily agree w/ his more political pieces, I still think this is a loss for the magazine.
His views on motor racing (and why so many forms of it currently appear to be failing/in trouble) , in particular, I thought were often spot-on.

i think his job was to ruffle feathers, come up with ridiculous ideas so everyone would talk about it. i don't even think he believed in half the stuff he wrote.
i haven't subscribed to c&d in 5 years, so maybe his articles are wacky now, but i enjoyed them 5 years ago. i also liked his 2 books.
i can't say the same thing about any other automotive editorial writer, it's painful to read anything from any one of them.

All American car mags are WEAK...compared to say, EVO for example.
Car & Driver shouldn't be worried about a single editor's salary...they should be worried about becoming Moot altogether, except for the occassional Joe Smith reader needing to gawk at some glossy car photos while on extending potty break...

I work in an industry where you need a truck everywhere you go......and a ridgeline wouldn't make it a mile down some of the roads I travel.
Even when they reviewed it....they kept complaining about ground clearance, etc......oooh, but it rides nice on level ground.....yet after all that, and the fact it didn't make it through some of the stuff they put the competitors through, it won. what the hell is a truck for?.

Most people don't need trucks that are only good at offroading. When magazines evaluate vehicles, they have to consider every type of use and base a decision on many different scenarios, not just how well it goes down a rough road. A one trick pony is useless to most people
Did you notice the Ridgeline was Motor Trends Truck of the Year? Every motoring journalist I know has been really impressed with the Honda

Well that explains why Car and Driver is the biggest car magazine in the WORLD, with a circulation of 1.6 million and an estimated 5+million readers
Not to mention multiple foreign language franchise sales
By comparison Evo's circulation is around 73,000. Magazines like Evo are at much greater risk of becoming "moot"
I love Evo as well, but you don't know what you are talking about
Brock likely got laid off because he was getting paid a full salary, and benefits, to write one page a month, most of which was spent promoting himself. He did nothing else for the magazine. I wish I had a deal like that.
Seems pretty reasonable to me for Csaba to make the decision he did.
What is weak is Brock whining about it on the front page of the One Lap website. Totally inappropriate IMO

I enjoy the humor in the magazine comparos and odd-ball test vehicles, kind of a dry wit. I rarely read the soapbox pages though, and definitely gave up on Mr. Yates a long time ago. I wish him well with his onelap, it is a cool event. Bashing his old magazine on his website seems about what I would expect.
Well that explains why Car and Driver is the biggest car magazine in the WORLD, with a circulation of 1.6 million and an estimated 5+million readers
No, C&D's editorial weakness doesn't explain their financial success anymore than Wal-Mart's. They serve their market very well, but it's a prole market (at least in automotive enthusiast terms).
Don't confuse editorial excellence with circulation or selling ad pages--they usually are mutually exclusive in car magazines.

No confusion on my part, Jon. I said nothing about "editorial excellence"(which is based entirely on personal opinion), and that is irrelevant to the point .
My point is that the magazines business model makes it far from being "moot" as BriDrive alluded.

Car and Driver is the Playboy of car magazines. Still the biggest because of what they were 50 years ago, but utterly irrelevant today. They're both just sitting around getting older. Completely out of touch.
And I just want to say I never made it more than half a page into Egan's column before I wanted to gouge my eyes out. You like old roadsters. I get it. What I remember of the rest of the editorial staff was a long series of second-rate Rush Limbaugh impersonations. Like I need some journalist hack to tell me what he thinks of cutting-edge climate or energy issues in between reviewing whatever new miserable domestic sedans are out this month.
Yates wrote the only editorials in C&D I could ever make it all the way through.
Honestly, I think that big mags like that have so many vested interests that you're never going to get an honest review of anything. The real development is happening online. Gimme SportsCar, maybe GRM, and a few weblogs and I'm set.

Magazines, then and now

I started with Road + Track in 9.64, been a subscriber since then, and to C/D in its various guises. Yates has been a pompous ass at times, I think his bleating on his web site is typical of that side. On the other hand, Sunday Racer was a very interesting book, a look at the Trans-Am of the day and some other moments of history in the younger days of motorcars and motor sports as I came aware of them. His intolerance sometimes is exactly on point, as has been Pat Bedard's. Henry Manney of R+T has wonderful stuff, so does Egan.
And then there is Ken Purdy, living on in his words, if long gone.
Sorry, Brock, about the job, but you know time moves on. Nothing is forever and the least you could have done was take it like a real man and go on to better things. Don't snivel.
Csaba, don't tell stories to gussy up your actions. Had enough of that with Clinton. Low class stories the duck the truth deserve low class responses on websites.
Whatever did happen to calling a spade a spade?
George

Being a commercial success, especially in America, does not necessarily mean you have a better product. I could point out many examples, but I bet you already know some of these (Apple vs. Microsoft, Beta vs. VHS, G Dubbya vs. Anybody with a brain, etc.). They may enjoy oval-based motorsports, but I don't. In addition, I would state that most people in this forum would agree with this. Arguing that something must be good because a lot of people buy it is flawed. Maybe they haven't ever heard of Evo since it's based in the UK? Maybe seeing cars they can't get it too much for their little heads?

Maybe seeing cars they can't get it too much for their little heads?
Being a commercial success, especially in America, does not necessarily mean you have a better product. I could point out many examples, but I bet you already know some of these (Apple vs. Microsoft, Beta vs. VHS, G Dubbya vs. Anybody with a brain, etc.). They may enjoy oval-based motorsports, but I don't. In addition, I would state that most people in this forum would agree with this. You might want to check your reading comprehension chief. I never said anything about a better product. My post was in response to someone saying that C/D is "moot" "irrelevant" etc. Well if that is the case, why are people still buying it? Why are companies advertising in it? Why are car manufacturers giving them cars to test?
Doesn't matter if it is better or not, people still like it enough to continue purchasing it, over and over, year after year

  That's a winner of a statement that proves what I said in my other post!
So, since you, and a bunch of people in a car club (that is biased towards rally), don't like NASCAR it is an inferior product? um, OK
Newsflash! Just because you think something is better, does not make it true for everyone. All your examples above are your personal opinion,I am sure there are plenty of people who don't agree with you
I think Grassroots Motorsports is boring, therefore it must suck and no one should buy it, right?

This thread is about Brock Yates getting canned, not which magazine you think is better.
No one cares what anyone thinks is the better magazine, buy the mags you like, period

I think Bock Yates and Dave Coleman should thumb wrestle on PPV.

I never read the editorials in car mags anyway...it is very very rare that they have anything interesting to say anyway.

Well, you did start off with your comment against Ferg (Evo > *, remember?). So, it would seem that your reading comprehension, along with your ability to follow a topic is in question.

Umm, why don't you look again, I made no reply to Fergs comment about Evo and never said one magazine is better than the other

I like thetruthaboutcars.com and jalopnik.com, too.
I think there are others I'm not recalling off the top of my head right now.
