Radar Detector?

I was wondering how many of us own a radar detector. If so, what kind, or what do you recommend?
I don't have one at the moment but I drive 45 minutes to work and I need one  . What should I get?

A new if not the newest V1. Its the best and direction, I also love the passport escort X50 which is awesome but the reason i'm gonna go with the v1 is that its directional plus the newest version of the v1 is really awesome.

is the newest v1 "undetectable" by police radar detector-detectors?
| HinshawWRX | 02-27-2007 10:34 PM |
I have one and it works great. Its just a cheapy Cobra that I got for 50 bucks but I still pick up the radar in enough time to slow down. The only thing to remember is just because it dosen't go off dosen't mean your not on radar. And that its never 100% effective
| siphu | 02-27-2007 10:41 PM |
Love my x50, but if i had to buy a new one i would buy the bel rx65 over the x50
Bel is owned by passport and the rx65 is practically identical to the x50 cept it has support for a new type of band or something
As far as directional, i personally dont feel the need for it. If the radar goes off, im slowing down.

my escort x50 is amazing. these is a new escort coming out, the 9500 i think.. it is looking really good. it has a gps so you can program in certain spots where you always see police, to give you another reminder, and you can also program in spots that have false alarms, such as automatic doors.

I use the V1, and I swear by it. You cannot get a better detector, because once they update it, all you have to do is send yours back to them and they will update it and send it back free of charge to you. I have been using one for about 5 years and it has saved me thousands of dollars in tickets.......Remember all it takes is the price of avoiding one ticket before the detector pays for itself.
If you want to spend less, definitely get the passport.

I have had a Escort Passport X50. Love it! It works great, It's programmable -that lets you turn off the nuisance alerts from the X and K bands. Every Real Alert from the: CHP (California Highway Patrol) Sheriffs, and National Park Rangers have come from Ka band radar. Visit radartest.com for lots of information.
It only needs to "save you" ONE time to save not only the ticket price but the likely increase in your insurance rates... you will become a believer too.

ditto on that. I have owned both. passport is your better buy for the money. Works almost as well as the v1. I just got the v1 when my money was better and I just had to have the best of the best. Plus I like that its made of metal and not plastic like all others.

I have an x50 as well, I love it. I know for a fact that it has saved me from at least 3 tickets. Now I wanna get the 9500 but I can't really justify dropping the 400+ bucks for it at the moment when I can use that cash for other mods

Only one person mentioned Cobra radar detectors. Are the low quality/worthless, or does any one really know anything about that brand? That's all I found at Best Buy the other day.

Of the local (to me) members, I believe the V1 is most common, although i'm not sure how many of us actually have them. I was planning on getting one, but the snow (slow driving) and more important things (stage 2 :)) have put that off for a while.
| ldf_wrxfan88 | 02-28-2007 08:53 AM |
Both my dad and I have cobra radar detectors and it has been the best investment for my car. In the three years I have had it, it has saved me probably 5 times where I would've surely got a ticket. I've had instances where I didn't even see the cop shooting radar, slowed down, and sure enough about a mile up there he was. Just remember though that these are not cop detectors so they dont protect you when the cops are pacing you and checking your speed otherwise.
| CynicX | 02-28-2007 09:21 AM |
I have a 110 dollar Cobra. And although there is no way to know for sure, I believe its saved me a couple times when it starts going off and I slow down. Then I top a hill or drive around a corner and there is a cop running radar....
Just not getting caught once makes it a worthy investment. Although overall I try not to speed unless I'm drunk and in a school zone....

I wouldn't say I LIVE by mine, but it is nice while on the highway for hour+ car trips. I don't use mine on local roads for the most parts; too many false readings and when in traffic you're not going to get pulled over anyway. I have a Bel 936 (bottom of their top line at the time) that I bought in 8/2002 for ~$160 and it certainly has saved me enough times to be paid for several times over.
My suggestion is buy at least a mid-level (price) one and drive smart. You can't drive 75 in a school zone and 100+ is NEVER safe on public roads. I like to drive 15-20 over (borderline ticket area anyway) on interstates and a detector gives me the ability to do it smarter.

i wouldn't say I live by mine... Heck, the last time i got nailed with laser, i didn't get a warning! So I use them as a guide... but the best detector is the one connected to the neck....
Many make the mistake of thinking that they allow u to drive faster without worry.... which isn't the case.

This is true. The main reason why I'd like one is that I'm in a fast car and sometimes you forget how fast you're going. And the second I lose track of that, a cop is on the horizon and I start freaking out and checking my speed. I'd like to have at least a few seconds heads-up. And don't tell me to use cruise control, thats like telling a teenager to stop playing with himself, it ain't gonna happen.

lol! I'm not saying not to get one.. By all means, do get one... They do help for those times when you aren't paying attention. All I'm saying is that cops tend to rely more on laser these days where a radar detector is less help.. You need a laser jammer for protection in that arena.
I mean, there are those times where it will help when a cop is using radar, but I find more often that they are shooting laser which is lethal. By the time the detector goes off (iF it does...) they already have your speed... Frustrating, but that is the state of affairs these days...
Think about pickin up a good laser jammer in addition to the detector for better protection.

I have both the Passport x50 and the Bell 65. My wife took my Bell. I think they are both awesome. I like the Passport better because of the analog volume control. The next gen Passport (9500 I think) will be awesome. Smart volume, increases as interior noise increases. Ability to program know falses. It should rule!
Also make sure you read the manual on these guys. You can really tailor the display. I think they call it the Pro display that actually allows you to display as many as 2 Ka, 2 K, and 4 X hits simualtaneously. This feature allows you to build good situational awareness of what pinging you.

I've had a V1 for 5+ years now and I can't imagine being without it. But there are certainly many other choices out there. The most important factor, IMO, is false alerts. If you constantly get alerts from other sources, you will tend to ignore your detector, and that has the potential to make it worthless to you. ;)

Are you only asking about cheap detectors or have you given thought to a radar/shifter system with seperate front/side/rear inputs? The one for me is the Escort SR7 Plus, check that out.
| stickygerbils | 02-28-2007 11:21 AM |
I'm a total nub with these things dude. Let's just say that I'm looking to spend 200 bucks at the most right now. I'm also buying an intake at the same time, so my budget is kinda tight at the moment. So far the Cobra XRS 9930 is looking pretty good at $199.00 at Circuit City... http://www.cobra.com/index.php?page=shop/flypage&product_id=456&id=1
From what I'm being told, nothing is perfect. This one just fits my needs and seems like a fair deal. As far as a radar/shifter system with seperate front/side/rear inputs... I'm not really sure that I need all that (or even know what it does  ).

I have one ^^^ It's ok I paid almost 300 for it, but still managed to get 2 speeding tickets with the radar. I was lucky in one case, was doing 110 and cop said I was doing 90.
I would get a passport, you can get them for around 220 now. I think its one of the better ones on the market, but you still have to be careful nothing is fullproof, like in my case.

just so you know, the valentine company does not update your V1 for nothing, usually depending on how far back your version is, it's going to cost you around $100 to update each time you send in your radar detector to the company

To me the radar detector is nothing more than piece of mind when I am driving. It lets me focus on the road, not focus on how fast I am going. I usually feel comfortable doing 10-20 mph over the speed limit. Excluding neighborhoods of course. And Highway I usually go 25-30 over the limit. Anything beyond that and you are pretty much asking for trouble. Nothing is fullproof, but from a guy that speeds 99% of the time, I have yet to get a ticket in my 6 years with my radar detector. Escort 8500 user for 3 years, and V1 for 3 years. Your never safe from a cop who is in the middle of nowhere and pulls the trigger on his radar gun. Many cops leave them on which let you detect them. But you must keep an eye out. If you do 110, even if you see a cop, it may be too late to slow down. It's all in how you use it.

I have had radar detectors since the mid 70's, when I got the infamous "FuzzBuster". I have had Passport and Valentine detectors, and both are very good. I think it comes down to personal choice. I prefer the Valentine V1 because of the metal case, directional arrows, and upgradeability. It really comes down to personal choice though.
Do I "live by it?" No, but I have it on always (hardwired). I don't speed very much in town. And on the open road here in America's Outback the speed limit is 75 and troopers don't worry you unless you are going 85 or so. That is fast enought for most of my trips. The detector is on mostly for entertainment, although it has saved me a few big tickets. I consider it money WELL SPENT!

Why are you worried about radar detector detectors? Radar detectors are only illegal in one state.
I was wondering how many of us own a radar detector. If so, what kind, or what do you recommend?
I don't have one at the moment but I drive 45 minutes to work and I need one  . What should I get?
The Valentine One is still #1 according to the latest independent unbiased radar detector test.
just so you know, the valentine company does not update your V1 for nothing, usually depending on how far back your version is, it's going to cost you around $100 to update each time you send in your radar detector to the company
They do update for nothing sometimes.
10/14/04
Started with a V1.8 POP1 3.817 firmware cost me $399+S/H.
5/27/05
Upgraded to V1.8 POP2 3.824 Euro firmware and hardware cost me $0.
7/25/06
Upgraded to V1.8 POP2 3.826 cost me $0.
Total cost of upgrades $0.
Does it tell you which direction the threat is comming from, and how many threats there are?
That was what made me get a V1
Yeah I thought about it after I posted. Quality wise both the $100 Whistler 325-XTR and the $300+ detectors will get you out of the SAME tickets. However, if you are going to get a super expensive one, do it for the reason vision.dynamix said. Get it for the directional arrows, because they are pretty damn helpful I'm sure. But don't think that getting the V1 will get you out of more tickets then a cheaper one with the same test results.

I love my V1, but have to turn it off near stores, when the door sensors set off the X band. But I see CHP a long ways off in the boonies, and it's paid for itself several times over, I'm sure. And the directional signal really is useful.
But Valentine seems to have ignored some other good features the other brands use. I thought I saw an ad for one of the other brands that claims to learn where bogus store signals are and ignore them forever after. That'd be nice.
