Rally Monte Carlo - talk about it here!!! part 1

MGXsport 01-21-2003 01:25 PM

Rally Monte Carlo
So where is the thread for it? It is only a couple days away!

So who do you think it will be? I don't know ish so I'll leave the predictions to the masters.

Chris
johnfelstead 01-21-2003 01:38 PM

No Idea who will win.

The Monte depends on the weather/luck to a large extent.

I know one thing though, i'll be there to watch it first hand. :D
MGXsport 01-21-2003 01:47 PM

Lucky that is one country I would love to visit. Take a lot of pictures to share!

Chris
bemani 01-21-2003 01:52 PM

Tommi. If he can win it in a new car last year, he'll be even faster this year :)
Subie Gal 01-21-2003 02:30 PM

who will win???

tommi! tommi! tommi! tommi!

erm.. or some other WRC driver

no clue.. but i cant wait!!!
AndyRoo 01-21-2003 02:31 PM

Carlos Carlos Carlos!

I say Carlos, Tommi, and Seb are top 3.
Rallychic 01-21-2003 02:34 PM

John...I am definitely jealous that you get to see it first hand!!
A few local rally folks headed over there last weekend...so hopefully they will take pictures!!

I will be happy if there are no Pugs in the top 3...but that isn't likely to happen!
MGXsport 01-21-2003 03:01 PM

What does the weather look like for the event?

And will speed have it on? I looked on the schedule and could not find it.
SlideWRX 01-21-2003 03:16 PM

Speed won't have it until later in the week, delayed until Wednesday or thursday. Less overall coverage time, but should be higher quality.

Here's hoping they do a good job this year!

Tom

P.S. I'm guessing Tommi, Markus & Petter, top 3.

Mad phat driftin' in the Clio, yo!!
quietgiroth 01-21-2003 06:24 PM

A Clio...are you driving the V6??? ( http://www.renault.com/gb/produits/clio_V6.htm )
When I go back home I want one, or a 147 V6. I just pray I get a good job so I can pay the insurance

From WRC.com

Who will win the Monte?
Gilles Panizzi (97%)
Seb Loeb (1%)
Petter Solberg (1%)
Tommi Makinen (1%)
Someone else (1%)

I hope Loeb doesn't win, I'm all for Petter. Although I don't think he really has a chance.
This is going to be so painfull having to wait a week to watch it (wednesday).
johnfelstead 01-21-2003 07:51 PM

no, it's a crappy 1.4 hire car = Hand brake turns all the way down the col. :D:lol:
MGXsport 01-21-2003 08:47 PM

yeah take the video mount!

well after thinking this is what I predict

Tommi
Marcus
Petter

I haven't read anything about C. McRae but he might do a lil' better in the Xsara.
Scooby South 01-21-2003 09:19 PM

Tooooooooo Cool....My MOTUL Rep is going....Lucky Bastidge....NE Ways...
There might be a Sponsorship change on the horizon for the SCOOBY WRC Teams....Negotiations are Pending...
Another OIL Company has offered BIG $$$$$$$$$$$ to sponsor the Scooby Teams to Leave MOTUL by the wayside........More as I know it...
MGXsport 01-21-2003 09:29 PM

I must be behind the times. I thought 555 was the sponsor for the years to come.
Scooby South 01-21-2003 09:33 PM

555 is the Primary... MOTUL is a 2ndary...just like Spike, Pirelli, etc...
MGXsport 01-21-2003 09:39 PM

Oh got it. So does an oil company want to take over the number one spot?
Scooby South 01-21-2003 09:47 PM

no.......Not to my knowledge...they just want to put their Brand on the door....You have to remember...secondary Sponsorship can still be in the millions of $$$ to a Pro Team...
Primary Sponsorship runs about 30-35 Million a Year or so....Especially with Prodrive behind it...so it gets Expensive
cdvma 01-22-2003 12:00 PM

Tommi is a good bet (he has won there what, 4 times in a row?), but he seems a little shaken from the last half of 2002 so I'd say Gronholm or Solberg. What I'm really interested in is to see how McRae will do in his Citroen.
CoiloverKid 01-22-2003 01:43 PM

juha kannkunen!!! ... :p

or maybe a skoda if they dont go FLYING OFF CLIFFS.

believe it or not, i think pat richard would be fully capable of taking it IMHO.
LimeyWRX 01-22-2003 03:02 PM

I want McRae to do well, He has never won this event but has always been very fast at Monte Carlo. New car, new (old) co driver who knows!! could be McRae's year!!

Petter will be on a charge but I don't think he has it in the bag. Definetly going to be close between Tommi, Leob and Gronholm.
whoobaru 01-22-2003 10:04 PM

The top 5 in no particular order; Makinen, Solberg, Panizzi, Loeb, Gronholm.
BlueJayRS 01-23-2003 10:21 AM

if anyone has DSS or other access to ESPNDeportes or ESPN+ they have recaps at the end of the day and the coverage is way better than SPEED and in English.
bemani 01-23-2003 11:18 AM

How many cars is Subaru running in Monte Carlo?
Coati 01-23-2003 11:39 AM

Things are starting off well for Panizzi!
PANIZZI PENALTY: Stewards have given Gilles Panizzi a 60 second penalty for an infringement during the recce. More news soon...
whoobaru 01-23-2003 12:10 PM
How many cars is Subaru running in Monte Carlo?
The factory 555 team is running 2 cars. Tommi and Petter. I have no idea about other classes.
BlackBeastie 01-23-2003 02:26 PM

Why is the coverage being delayed until next week. I am going to hate waiting that long.

I am excited to see how CMcRae does in the new Citroen.
Dussander 01-23-2003 04:33 PM

Ack, can anyone find the countdown time to Monte Carlo on the new wrc.com site? That always helped me figure out when the race would start.
Coati 01-23-2003 04:40 PM

It vanished when they revamped their site.:(

I liked that feature, too. I wish they'd put it back.
j y 01-23-2003 05:04 PM

Re: Things are starting off well for Panizzi!
Further details on Panizzi from Rally-Live.com:
The curse continues...

Gilles Panizzi was assessed a one-minute penalty for something that happened during the recces.

The driver's GPS malfunctioned during SS11 and SS13, and then during SS12 and SS14. The rules stipulate that the GPS must record each time a driver goes through a special stage.

The scrutineers' report indicated that 'this problem was due to a programming error from the team's mechanics'. Panizzi, in fact, was penalized because he failed to mention this failure to the scrutineers. His teammate, Richard Burns, apparently had the same problem but warned the marshals, thus avoiding the penalty.

Considered to be one of the favourites to win this rally, Panizzi will have to start with a one-minute handicap - but the Monte-Carlo is so unpredictable...
Ouch

MGXsport 01-23-2003 05:18 PM

Since the coverage is going to be a week behind this time, does that mean it will be the same way for the rest of the season?

Subie Gal 01-23-2003 05:48 PM

yep. you can thank Dave Richards and Nascarvision for that... :)

Jamie

go petter! go tommi!
AndyRoo 01-23-2003 06:41 PM

Those pictures are beautiful...

As much as I like Panizzi, I dont see why he got 97% of the vote at wrc.com, penalty or not. It's snowing.
Opie 01-24-2003 08:36 AM

Listening to the live broadcast on the web. Stage 5 is getting ready to start. Petter is the top Subaru,, currently in 2nd Place! Makinen is currently in 9th. Gronholm leads.

GO SUBARU!!
Opie 01-24-2003 09:03 AM

Petter got a 40 second penalty, dropped him back to 5th.

Current results:
1. M GRNHOLM 1:07:50.1
2. S LOEB +55.6
3. C MCRAE +1:08.7
4. R BURNS +1:21.4
5. P SOLBERG +1:26.4
6. C SAINZ +1:56.6
7. M MRTIN +1:59.9
8. C ROBERT +2:17.4
9. T MKINEN +2:52.0
10. R KRESTA +3:04.4
Opie 01-24-2003 09:23 AM

Petter has trouble, last report was he made it to checkpoint 4 on stage 5, never made it to checkpoint 5. The 3 drivers behind him have already completed the stage. :(
MstrDC 01-24-2003 09:24 AM

Well, it got worse than that. Makinen and Solberg both went off the road and have retired!:(
Opie 01-24-2003 09:25 AM

Just saw that! Great opening for the new car and the season.
Opie 01-24-2003 09:30 AM

Petter crashed out 21Km into the stage, Makinen hi centered the car and can't get it going again 6Km in. Both cars officially out.
MstrDC 01-24-2003 09:34 AM

It seems they were both out by driver error. You had Solberg driving like crazy, because I quote, "Halfway into SS4 I was turning on to a bridge, the road was all covered in ice and I was probably only doing 5kph. I turned, but the car just went straight on into the bridge post, the post broke and the front of the car hung off the bridge it was like the Italian Job! We stayed there for about 20 seconds and then I put the car in reverse and got going again. I went flat out after that. Monte Carlo is a rally that you have to respect and Im respecting it a little more now!"

Plus in SS5 he got that 40 second penalty so I'm realy sure he was driving like a mad man at that point.

You also had Makinen in SS3 hit a rock and lose his brakes. At the end of Stage 4 one of the wheels still had no brakes and I'm sure their was major damage in that area of the car.

Seems like Monte just got the best of them. :( Atleast the new car had no mechanical problems, that's some good news. ;)

Our guys are out of the rally - both retired on stage 5. Can only get better from here, right?
jaybird 01-24-2003 09:48 AM

Don't worry I'm sure Colin will crash out too. It sounds like conditions are worse than they expected. I'm liking Carlos. Petter is so cool. That quote was funny.

I realize it's a moot point by now, but what was the 40 sec penalty for? I couldn't find anything on wrc.com, rally-live, etc ... just curious.
Rallychic 01-24-2003 10:30 AM

Darn it...can't believe they are both out already...grr....

I imagine everyone is pumped and driving crazy out there in this first rally...only time will tell!! ;)
MstrDC 01-24-2003 10:37 AM
I realize it's a moot point by now, but what was the 40 sec penalty for?
I'm not too sure, all I know is that he was 4 minutes late for something.
Opie 01-24-2003 11:25 AM

I think he was late for the start of stage 5
Coati 01-24-2003 12:47 PM

radiator problems took too long to fix in service, so he got a penalty, then he crashed and took out the radiator again, and the car wouldn't restart.

I think I'm gonna root for Auriol and the Hyundai drivers for the rest of this rally.:)
jonny_boy 01-24-2003 01:48 PM

Go Seb. Would be fitting if he wins it and gets to keep it this year... I guess the red paint didn't slow the silver bullet at all.
MstrDC 01-25-2003 08:23 AM

Wow, a busy day today! Panizzi out, he quit saying he was sick. Loix also out, and Gronholm is said to be going VERY slow on Stage 9 after hitting a bank.

So far it looks like a 1-2-3 for Citroen!

Edit: Gronholm just retired!
MikeWRX 01-25-2003 05:09 PM

Did anyone notice that in the interview with Colin on wrc.com the female interviewer says "well its Peugeot 1,2,3 ... " I am sure she meant Citreon but after last year she is probably used to it.
Mikanical 01-26-2003 09:31 AM

Just saw the final results,

OMG seems like deja vu. Talk about domination! I can`t wait for TV coverage. The fight for Driver Title should be more interesting this year.

Mike
ShockWave 01-26-2003 10:30 AM

The more I watch, the more I think FIA needs to limit the teams to 2 cars (3 if they absolutely must keep the "tarmac specialist"). Failing that, Subaru needs to field a third car. I hate to say it is starting to feel as if only the low budget teams field two cars.
SL2 01-26-2003 12:03 PM

I've recorded some coverage from UK Digital TV. It's in mpeg2 format so i'll need to compress it a bit more but if someone wants a copy just PM me. I only have ISDN at the moment so i could do the last half of todays programme(i actually only managed to record that bit today - I have 30mins from yesterday though).
johnfelstead 01-26-2003 09:44 PM

Well i managed the Col De Turini in my 1.2 litre Clio. I took the camera, so expect some fun not quite WRC speed footage on a PC near you soon.

The brakes were Smokin by the finish.

Guess where i got to for the first run through? Yep, SS5, i never saw a works scoob run in anger. In fact i never saw a works scoob at all. I was stuck in a pile up on the A8 into Monte Carlo and missed the Casino Square start by minutes.

I made up for it later though, fabulous event. Really great fun, i could live down there, it's a drivers heaven. :D
