Oh man, that looked painful. My back hurts after watching it... I hope they're both OK. That was a tricky crest indeed. I wonder if they had "Dude atop crest pointing farther to the right" in their notes? My best wishes to the team...

Cheers,

Tall Pines is the closest Canadian national event to you. We usually get a contingent of Michiganders who come up to compete, work, spectate, etc.

Hope to see you there!

That stage/rock looks like it is the same one that took us, Sprongls, Block, Pat Richard, Don Kennedy and others out at Tall Pines in 04.

Let's see - it broke gears in Pat's tranny, wrinkled the floor pan and snapped the stub shaft on Sprongl's car, shattered the corner- bent the A pillar on Block's car - shattered the corner and bent the frame rail on mine and did some serious engine damage to Kennedy's car.

That rock has taken its toll.

And there was no reason to hit it this year. Notes familiarization pass. Cautioned in the route book. Caution arrows in place before the crest.

To hit it, you had to ignore all of the above and just drive over the crest as fast as you could. Oh, wait, that's what happened.

2007 Tall Pines bump!
Rally of the Tall Pines, who will be attending for 2007?

I am mega excited about it this year - it will be the first "real" rally I have brought my wife and two young boys to.... X games 13 did not count... so who is going to volunteer to hang out with us and show us around?

We rented a cabin about 25 minutes away from rally HQ - if anyone wants to meet up, send me a PM or post it up!

Should be an awesome rally, we did not finish last year in the EVO IV, hoping this year goes a bit better!

I'm not going to spoil the surprize other than saying there is less room for error and more possiblity for damage. It could be real exciting or it be boring, depending on how aggressive the drivers are.

This will be my first time at a rally race. How exactly does spectating work at these races are we suppose to drive to different observation areas through out the race or what. Can someone expalin this to me?
fuzzy13 11-06-2007 09:49 AM

There are spectator areas setup at sections of the stages. Given the distances between the stages and the sheer number of people that show up, you will not be able to get to all of them.

Here is some info to get you started:

Spectator schedule: http://www.tallpinesrally.com/TallPines/Default.aspx?tabid=89

Spectator points: http://www.tallpinesrally.com/TallPines/Default.aspx?tabid=90

Now we just need the snow north of Sudbury to come down a bit :D

There are actually only two official spectator areas:
The daytime stages run through the Ironbridge spectator area - which is a series of great corners over about a kilometer. The cars pass three times so you can see a different corner each pass, or you can watch the same section again and again. There are food vendors and porta-potties and everything else a spectator might need.

The night time stages run through the Castledine's Corner's spectator area. After the last daytime pass you'll have time to drive from the Ironbridge area, grap some dinner in Bancroft and then head out to Castledine's. The cars pass this spectator area twice.

You can also visit the HQ and service area at any time to watch a service if you like.

There are also VIP passes (already sold out for this year) where you show up and the get on a bus. The bus takes you to special VIP viewing areas, and you get all sorts of special extras, including lunch and dinner.

Or you can sign upto work and may be given a road junction to marshall away from a spectator area. Worker sign-up is on the website.

you forgot to mention that
a) you must get there very early (before sundown, around 3:30-4-5pm) to get good spots, and to walk the stage like me dad and my uncle did last year (possibly take an illegal post somewhere in the stage!)

and
b) wait for 3-4 hours until car ZERO passes,

yeah atleast last year it wasnt wet or anything! just REALLY COLD

i cant wait to go again :D

Are you talking about at Castledine's? Yes, the parking is along one side of the road that leads to the corner so the parked cars extend back a kilometer or two by rally time. Those who get there first don't have to walk as far but have to wait to get out. As a worker I was able to drive to the head of the line last year just before car 0 time. Along the way I picked up a 8-month pregnant woman who still had about a kilometer to walk to get to the stage and gave her a ride. Now that's a fan.

Must have been last year's 1 pass course familarization pass that there was a beaver pond on the other end of the stage where the pond froze over and then the dam broke or was broken by humans and all the water under the ice ran out. There was ice hanging in the trees and attached to the tree trunks above road level like table tops. Looked out of this world like moonscape or something.
You're in for another suprize this year. :(
a birdie told me that maybe the surprise is how organizers will strictly control tire choice for the competitors.

birdie said each team would be allowed EIGHT TIRES only for the entire event. Pines is often known as "The Rally of the Many tires" because you never know if the roads will be gravel, snow, mud, ice or some evil combo of everything. Some teams may have 30+ sets of wheels/tires to deal with the variables.

so our plan is to start with a soft gravel on the left front, a rally snow on right front, a street snow w/tube on the LR, and an all-season on the RR so we can handle any condition (or at least suck equally in all).

Don't know anything about tires - this is something completely beyond the control of the organizers. Besides unless there is something in the rules or the sups allowing them to do that I don't think they can limit you this late in the game.
02GD_Wagon 11-08-2007 09:59 PM

either way, if they do restrict tire choices, it will make the comp. very tight and they will really have to push it!

hopefully we'll have some snow up there this year :) we have already had some bitter cold weather and a bit of snow this week in niagara falls..

2 weeks and 2 days left! :D
Doug Woods 11-09-2007 12:23 PM

There are no tire restrictions. Dave's post was in jest.
