Release date for Toyo R888?

Does anyone have any info about this? I imagine it will be soon, but I'm wondering if it's worth waiting for them or if I should just run the first half of this season on RA1's.
| Turn in Concepts | 02-15-2007 09:18 AM |
They have been out for a year, but not here.

Yeah I know :( Looking for info on the US release date. I know they were displayed at SEMA so I imagine it's soon.

There are numerous series that run RA-1 as a spec tire so I wouldn't be shocked if it was announced midseason as the tire for next year.

I agree. I would suspect for a few months that both the RA-1 and the 888 will be on the market here in 07. However, for 08 i think all the spec tires will be 888's.

All I know is, I want some, they are way light (the non-DOT's) compared to the RA-1's
IIRC
I was working on my brakes while stimpy weighed them.

I just got my Toyo sponsorship and they will be releasing for public use on June 21, 2007. He tried to sneak me a set, but got shut down...RA-1 for me for now...

| littlewhitewagon | 06-20-2007 12:10 AM |
R888 has been proven to be fast in all of their events in Japan and Aussy as well. The pricing will be similar to RA-1.
| littlewhitewagon | 06-23-2007 02:08 AM |
I just put them on today, took them out for a spin and they are definately better than the RA-1. The sidewall rolls less than the RA-1, the grip is better the noise is different, the tire seats much better on the rim. The R888 are slightly lighter than the RA-1. AND... 245/40R17 WILL BE AVAILABLE LATER!!

They will have lots of popular sizes, they just need time to get them over here. There will be more size offerings than in the JDM and AU market.

That's what I wanted to hear, I'm not 100% sure if I can fit the 255's , I know A032 245/40/17 will just fit on an 17x8 ET48 wheel. I wonder if I should spot the extra $$ and buy the RFP1 to get an ET45 wheel.
WHERE did you buy the R888's in the US ? Pricing on your size ?

Is the RA-1 out of production?
| littlewhitewagon | 06-24-2007 12:08 PM |
The RA-1 is still in production and will be available for at least another year from a Toyo source.
225/45R15 might have been on the list, I forget...I think that is a popular size that the NT-01 has and I believe the R888 will offer it too. Expect to see it later though...
I am sponsored by Toyo, so I get them from their warehouse. Pricing on the R888 is similar to the RA-1. My 235 on the 8" RPF-1 I have makes the sidewall completely flat and does not bulge or roll inward. I think a 255 is supposed to have a 8.5 or 9" wheel.
So far, I have put about 250 street miles on them. These things sound like super swampers but with a constant tone instead (not super annoying though, lets you know that you have a tire that is going to grip; people do look at you funny when they figure out the sound is from your little car), the grip is amazing. The tires don't like standing water, but I'm sure everyone can figure out why. The R888 compared to the RA-1 also has a little squeal before they get to their last 20% of grip, but you have to try hard to get it there on the street. I haven't gotten the car fast enough in a turn to see what they do when you start sliding, but I'm sure I will in the next couple weeks. I got the tires a little warm in a canyon on the way home and they are significantly better than the RA-1. The response from these tires is also better than the RA-1, which I found to have a slightly softer sidewall, but that is coming from an RE070...

Good review ! I'd like to get a set of the RFP1 17x8 and put on the 245/40/17 R888, it should fit nicely without bulging too much. From your review and pics of the tread the R888 reminds me of the A032 , just stickier since the Yok isn't as grippy as the RA-1. I guess I'll look forward to running a set next year.
Perhaps we'll see some nice discounts on the RA-1 over winter as its phased out.

They have enough inventory and are still making them , I think the R888 would most likely will replace it. The life seems to be good so far. Just for kicks, I am going to drive to Phoenix today on them and see what happens. These tires are not like the 032R, I remember what those felt like back in the day. These are more like your 048, since these are the new generation of tire. Actually, to be honest, the R888 and 048 are about the same as far as noise, traction, and many other sensations on the street. Until I get them sticky on the track, I won't be able to say much more.

So, what's the minimum spec'd rim width for this size? 8.5 or 9? I'm running 255/40 RA-1s on 8.5 now.

Ok, after a drive from LA to PHX, the tires still look new. During the hottest times, the air is about 117 deg. The tires are exactly like 048 as far as noise, they are loud. The straight line stability was great, so far tested to 125. Traction on hot pavement is good, no slippery feelings on the streets of PHX. I am going to try and find a canyon road here and see what happens if i have time before I leave today.

I just put over 900 miles on the R888 and they have no signs of abnormal wear from the trip. Amb temps were up to 119 today. I will take pics tomorrow during sunlight. The tire noise goes from a low pitch to a high pitch then disappears as speed increases. I didn't get to find a canyon, but did get to try out high speeds. Today, at 139, the tire and car was completely stable and had great feedback. Can't wait to take this thing to the track...

Thanks for the offer! I was way too busy with work on this trip. I drove in on Monday to have 2 meetings starting at 2PM. Tuesday, I had 3 meetings and then left PHX to get home a bit before 9PM.
I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before I am in PHX again...that 114 deg heat is BS man...talk about lack of power in traffic...

Wonder what size rim you'd need for a 245/45 16?
225/45 16 might be interesting compared to 225/50 16.
What is the official treadwear rating on these again?

UTQG 100 AA A
245/45 is a size I've been looking for for a *long* time. I'm quite excited about it. 245/40 would be even better, as you'd get a little gearing advantage in the mix too, but 245/45 is almost spot-on in the diameter department (about 1% under).

You are probably thinking along the same lines as me. 245/45 would be very cool. Concerned a bit about clearance in the wheel well (wagon) though, rolling fenders or not, that would be a tight fit.

Unless you have the fenders majorly rolled on the wagon, you won't fit a 245/45-17. When I had the 245/45-17 NT-01's it was a close fit on the STI.

[QUOTE=mav1c;18553715]Unless you have the fenders majorly rolled on the wagon, you won't fit a 245/45-17. When I had the 245/45-17 NT-01's it was a close fit on the STI.

I think they are talking about 245/45/16 tires.
How do you like the NT01's?

i prefererred the nt01's by far, over the ra1's. tried nittos first, then ra's and switched back asap. i definitely want to test out these 888's.

These aren't big for their size as most would think.
In a 255/35/18 they're only 10.2" wide, compared to the ao48's which are 10.3" wide. That's around the same as a normal size 255/35 which generally is around 10.1".
A normal 265/35 is still around 10.7" so they are considerably wider.
I am definately shooting for the R888 in a 255/35/18.

Go to the toyo website and use the dealer locator to find yourself a dealer.

[QUOTE=littlewhitewagon;18502711]The RA-1 has already stopped production. The remainder of the inventory is to support spec racing and the sponsored drivers that need to stay on RA-1 for the setup.

RA1 has not stopped production and will be available for WELL over a year if not longer.
Just FYI, I work for toyo (i'm using a friend account because I forgot my login  )
Glad you are enjoying your R888's

Fixed my previous statements. So sorry, I must have misunderstood. Who is this by the way?
