Richard Burns out for 2004 season

Unfortunately Richard has been diagnosed with a brain tumour and will not be able to drive during the 2004 season.
I and i am sure everyone else wish Richard a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him drive for Subaru in the comming seasons. I am very grateful he wasnt alone or driving in Rally GB when his blackout occured.
Details can be found at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/world_rally/3277637.stm

OMG. That is so messed up! I was sure he'd had the flu or something, and just gotten a bit woozy before Rally GB. That is just AWFUL. RB's gonna have to pull a Lance Armstrong and come back to victory. I know we're all pulling for him.
here's a link to RB's homepage - he's got a statement there.

Indeed, best wishes for a speedy recovery! Fortunately it looks like they found it early enough, and the prognosis is good.

Scary stuff, RB--please know all your fans are pulling for you.
Think of this, though...he drove so well in 2003 despite the illness (these things don't just happen overnite, ya know). Imagine how he'll do in 2005 when he's back up to snuff!
Cheers,
Dave G

I just read about that from my RB newsletter. :(
Here's what the newsletter said:
Richard Burns has been undergoing tests in hospital to determine the cause of the health problem he suffered before Rally of Wales. These tests have been concluded and the doctors have now confirmed that he has a Astrocytoma. Richard will undergo a course of radiotherapy treatment which the doctors are confident will prove successful. However, they have confirmed that he will be unable to compete in the 2004 FIA World Rally Championship.
Richard says " I would really like to thank everyone for their continued support - it means a lot to me. My fans, the Peugeot WRC team and also everyone at Prodrive and Subaru have all been tremendous. The doctors have advised that I am unable to get back in a rally car for the 2004 FIA WRC Championship and I have to accept that. I'm obviously extremely disappointed but I am feeling very positive and I am determined to focus all of my efforts on getting back to full fitness as soon as I can.
Richard has asked that people respect his and his family's privacy in what has been, and will continue to be, a difficult period. Additional information will be given once Richard has completed the course of treatment referred to above.
Godspeed to a quick and full recovery Richard!!!

Wow, that's horrible, I'm not even really a fan of him, but I hope that he recovers quickly and is able to compete in the 2005 season.
I guess this also means that McRae might be able to run for Subaru next year?

He's a winner....
the guy aint just gonna give up on this.
Just one more battle he's gotta win...
and I know he will....
he's just too damn determined and stubborn to
do anything less.....
heartbreaking, but i am very thankful for him
that they found it this early.

poor performance? he was leading the drivers points most of the year...and he very well could have won the championship if not for pulling out of GB...

It is great luck (in the ironic sense) that he blacked out on the way to the event, and that Robert Reid (who probably pays close attention to how RB's driving by habit) caught his lapse in time to save them both. On a special stage, especially those fast forest stages - and isn't it amazing that considering the physical and mental stress they're under during competition that it didn't happen then - they'd easily both have been killed. This is some weird, backhanded luck. Hopefull it'll all eventually pay off in continued health and success.

Yep,
If there's anything good about this happening to Richard. Is that they caught it pretty early hopefully he can be well enough to come back in '05.

And rallying has seen far too much of that in 2003. :(
I'm not the greatest Burns fan either, but I do wish him speedy recovery. Sounds like this isn't terminal, which is a relief. Hope to see him back in a good seat in '05.
Meantime, I'm crossing fingers for the return on Colin to Subaru. A reunion with the Welsh Wizard would be even more grand. :D
Best wishes, Richard!

It was Markko who was with Richard at the time.
I hate to say it, but I had a feeling that it would turn out to be something major like this. :(
Looks like maybe McRae will have a ride after all?

I just assumed it was Reid - why were RB and Marko be travelling together? Either way, good save, MM.

I feel sad for two reasons. First for Richard, I wish him all the best in the world.
Second for Colin. Colin has been my favorite driver for the last 10 years, and to see his carrier come to a turning point such as this. Wether SWRT gives him a 1 yr ride or not, its the manner in which he is being regarded.

I am just thankful that Subaru understands and is giving him the recovery time he needs. It just means that Petter will have to kick butt alone next year and wait till '05!

Well, looks like Harri was cut loose from Peugot today. He's another possible candidate to keep Burnsie's seat warm for a season. I'd rather have a tarmac specialist though.

LeiboWRX, i think the policy of not telling people more details is fair and deliberate. Richard has a battle on his hands and he doesnt need people speculating about his treatment or level of illness. My sister works at the UK's leading cancer research and treatment hospital as a senior nurse and she explained to me the types of issues Richard will face right now, it's going to be a very tiring time for him for the next 6 weeks in particular so i think the less people know, the less his family will have to explain and therefor the more they can concentrate on helping him through this imediately dificult time.
The most helpful thing we as supporters can do right now is leave this to the profesionals to get on with their job, not putting Richard and his family under any presure to keep us informed.

Just catching up on some off-season news, and I saw this from the frontpage of www.impreza.net (thanks nick!). Horrible news... the big C is a scary opponent.
RB will be in my thoughts and prayers... The good news is that like Lance Armstrong, RB has the proven strength of charecter to overcome deep adversity, as seen by some of his outstanding performances at the highest levels of motorsport.
Fight the good fight, Richard! Show that tumor who's the boss! We'll see ya in 2005 ready kick some A in the WRC!
