Roof vent/scoop finally installed! part 1

Alizarin 09-12-2005 11:17 PM

Roof vent/scoop finally installed!
I finally got the vent and scoop installed. Its a Spec C vent (prepainted WRB), and a genuine STI roof scoop, painted by my body shoppe guy. I found a good shoppe willing to do the install (I don't have the proper tools) and they did a great job. Big thanks to Craig at CUE Auto Restyling for his time.

And now, for the TTIWWOP! Install was done on Saturday afternoon, pics were taken at the local dinner meet later that night. I'll have some more on the way after I clean up the car from my offroad adventures Sunday. This is an approximate "before" picture.

Great to finally have the pieces on, and now I'm currently pondering my next project of making a camera/XM/GPS pod for the roof, a la the rally cars. (After my water sprayer project is done ;))

where did you get the scoop from?

Scoop was purchased from Boxer4racing. The vent can also be purchased there, but I bought the scoop at a later date, so I had already gone with a different vendor for the vent itself.
Hank3 09-12-2005 11:38 PM

How loud is it and how much air does it let in?

How's the airflow and noise at freeway speeds compaired to having both windows down on the drivers side? I love driving with the windows down, but once I hit about 55mph it's too loud, so I'm looking into the vent and hoping that it's a good source of breeze without as much noise. I'm sure there's noise, I'm just hoping it's a bit less. I think that will be my first MOD in the spring since it's getting cool here pretty quickly so it wouldn't get much use for me until then anyway.

AWESOME!

Not a fan of the scoop, but I love the vent.

if you get to the next level then I might jump on that list as $415 after paint is pretty good...

Damn i hear ya.

I only wish you could install the Scoop Cover w/ out drilling more holes.
I would have gotten it too.

Need better outside pic's on the double!
AZ-GT 09-13-2005 06:15 PM

Looks like you shoud have painted the interior of the scoop to match the exterior.
Alizarin 09-13-2005 09:31 PM
How loud is it and how much air does it let in?
With the windows down, it blends in. You still to hear it (different sound) but its no louder. It really moves air. Imagine putting your hand out the window. Its like that, but slightly less (just slightly).
thats bad ass dude how much did it cost you in the end
Way too damn much. Including paint, parts, shipping, and install, I probably paid close to $1400. And to Mrfairlady, you can install the scoop without drilling holes, it did come with that 3M body panel tape on the sides. With the size of the opening in the back to let air flow through, it probably would hold pretty well.
How's the airflow and noise at freeway speeds compaired to having both windows down on the drivers side?
It was about 85* this evening on the way home from work and I had all the windows up and the vent open and stayed nice and cool. With the windows all up, its still not as loud. At 90 or so mph it starts getting really loud (as do all cars), but at 80 I can hear the stereo just fine. I'd do a video test with my camera, but my camera mount sits in the air stream of the vent itself, so it would be more than a little biased, IMO.
Looks like you shoud have painted the interior of the scoop to match the exterior.
Yeah there's some "overspray" on the insides like that and some white shows in the corners, but it doesn't bother me.

Part of the reason I got the scoop is so I can leave it open during the days to let heat out of the car. FL sun can heat up a car over 140* in just 30 minutes.

I like waving at them through it.

For those wondering, this morning I drove with both the windows AND the vent CLOSED. You could hear the wind noise of the air passing through the scoop, but it wasn't bad. A little radio adjustment made it go away. At my normal driving volume w/ windows up you couldn't hear it at all.

If there is enough interest, I could try to get some video of different scenerios, but I can't make any guarentees as to how well they'll come out. I'll be taking some more pictures this weekend.

doesnt it say not to keep the vent open past 55kph? I remember the roof vent Mike (mpaone) installed on his L has that written along with other Japanese on the label.

I like how it looks on your car btw :)

total noob question but, what does the scoop/vent actually do?
w2002r2002x 09-16-2005 12:43 AM

clearly it makes your car faster, all while collecting bugs for sustenance. seriously though, that looks really good, congrats on getting it done, wish i could afford it.
jacobsen1_ 09-16-2005 09:03 AM
total noob question but, what does the scoop/vent actually do?
It's from the spec-c subarus from Japan. That car is basically designed to be sold to race teams so it has some great options, but is missing somethings. It usually comes with the best engine and tranny available, and lots of lightening things done to it including taking out the AC. With no AC, they put in this vent to cool the driver.

From what I've read it says not to open the vent above 55mph meaning if it's closed and you want to open it, then you must slow down to 55mph, open it, then speed back up. This is supposed to be because the hinge can't handle the shock load of being open in more wind than that. I've heard of people driving 80mph+ with the scoop open, and they just say it's VERY NOISEY, but that it does stay there.

Yes, I had my vent translated and this is what it says... you can have it open to any speed, but do not "open up" going over 80km

Hey Alizarin, what was the install cost for that thing, just out of curiousity ??? I'm over here in Orlando and I've been thinking of the roof vent for some time now..... And now with the evidence you've supplied, it's definately looking t3h s3xy .... :D

BTW..... Somewhere I read that there was an issue with those vents and water leaking into the cabin..... Any problems with that at all ???

Well, it hasn't rained yet over here (in about 2 weeks, quite odd, really) so I dunno about that. I did notice some leakage to the headliner when I took it through the Touch-Free on Wednesday night. But that was extremely high pressure. I'm going to experiment with it this weekend to see if its a bigger problem than just high pressure water getting by.

Total cost was about $500 for the vent + $550 for the scoop (these aren't exact numbers) + $100 for paint. That would take you up to install-time, which you might be able to do yourself. Or, working for a dealership, con somebody into doing.

As for the speed thing, I was going much faster than the posted limit *cough* this afternoon on the way back from Mastro and there were no problems. I'll find somebody at work who knows Japanese (or somebody else) and have it translated to find out and corroborate the other reports of it being "don't open over 80kph".

More pics coming tomorrow (Saturday). Thanks for the positive comments, everybody :D

Edit: Sorry, no pics tonight. My IC splitter fab project this afternoon took longer than expected, and I ran out of daylight. Pics in the morning then.

Ahhh.... Cool, cool...... Hey, another quick question..... Is that the exact same vent as the Spec-C ??? Basically, I was interested in doing the same sort of set up as as yours, but without the big scoop (nothing against the rally look at all)..... I just like the the JDM look a lot and it appears that they just use the vent by itself.....

YOU CAN BUY ONE HERE

I don't have the vent yet, but I do have this mirror in my car. From the drivers seat it looks just like the auto dimmer. It's made by the same people, and you can also get it with ambient air temp which is why I got mine. The make versions with map lights built into the mirror, so if you get rid of the stock map lights by getting a vent, you can use these. I actually prefer these map lights on the mirror because you can't actually see the element that is lit while looking out the windshield to drive, so it doesn't affect your night vision as bad as the stock lights, so my passenegers can turn it on without bugging me.

Also from what I've read on other threads (where the writting was translated by someone who speaks Japanese) is that you can't open the vent when driving over55mph. I can be left open and then accelerate beyond 55mph, but if it's closed and you are going >55mph, slow down, open it, then speed back up. The problem being that if you open it above 55mph, when the wind grabs the lip it will pull it open fast enough to break the plastic part.

Upside down? Really? Hrm... I guess I'll investigate it. It is entirely possible, we really didn't have instructions on proper seal orientation.

OrlandoSTI: Yes, it is the Spec C vent.

I brought the piece from the roof in to work, stuck some double sided magnet tape on it and put it up on my wall. Already had 2 people ask about it.

I flipped the inner gasket around tonight, and it seals much better when closed now. This weekend I'll apply a little bit of silicone sealer around the edge of the hole to make sure I get a good seal. The only thing that bugs me now is that the front 2 trim retainers (closest to the windshield) are loose, even more so when open. I guess I'll hafta fiddle with those a little bit too.

Roof Vent Cover Install
Damn that looks bad ass.

So, your install was around $300? Did the shop have any reservations to doing the job. I suppose I would find a shop that installs moon roofs, etc.

Was there a template included for the hole cut or just a big guestimation using the lid?

I plan on sticking one on my wagon after Subtietuning's GB is done. Painted roof vent cover from Japanparts.

thanks,

don't use the lid!Its way bigger than the hole.

All you do is get a good sturdy really thin cardboard or I used the folder that Hewlitt packard Printing paper (CPU printer) comes in
and you trace the bottom side of the Plastic Interior Trim part that goes on the inside using a pencil.*Keep that template handy.*

You should already have the Hinge holes and scoop already on the roof (just not bolted in)before your ready to cut the hole. Now you mount everything like it was ready to go (holeless of course except for the 4 - 2 on ea. side Hinge holes)...trace the Trim peice on the roof of you car on the bottom side.Thats what you drill pilot holes to mark the oval.
draw a ghetto arrow on the Template to point which way its supposed to point on the Top of your car just in case.

That is the exact size hole to cut...only make sure you get it facing the right direction (on the Top side of your Car when you cut...it is not a Perfect semetrical Oval...one side is supposed to face toward the front and 1 toward the back of the car.The trim peice will show you.

Then Drill pilot holes from the bottom out (used when you traced the Plastic trim on the bottom and then trace the *template* again on the top of the car lining them up w/ the pilot holes you already drilled and make one a tad bigger to fit the Jig saw blade through and your set.

It is Scary but the Metal Roof Bracket frame lines up Perfect using STock (vanity light) holes in your roof.Theres really no way you can mess it up.HONESTLY.
even if you cut the hole a little too big you won't be ale to tell!
The Seal will hide some imperfections and the scoop the others,if for some reason you mess up a tad....but you won't!
Hardest part is cutting the Foam roof lining and being careful not to crease it and cut to much. That was the Scariest part for me.(being by myself)have a Very sharp knife ready for that.

I did it by myself, after looking over a few threads & "Half assed" How-To's and did it in about 6 hrs alone.Stopping for beer and smokes of course.
I was close to calling a Sunroof installation place to do it...but I love doing stuff myself and I'm just now "pretty inclined".

Good luck! Those are just some basic tips.
WRXFan420 09-21-2005 07:54 PM

3M Tape is not enough to hold the scoop on at highway speeds. It will fly off the car within a couple weeks. I got my vent installed for $125, Scoop painted for $200 and could have had the scoop installed at the same time as the vent for the $125 but liked the look without the scoop. Install only takes about an hour, when done by a professional Sunroof installer.
