Should Burns join Subaru

Vote and debate.

I would have to weigh the other options offered; Cloin, Burns, etc. I think Richard would be ok. Colin has just been too rough on his cars the last couple of seasons.
| FlooredSubaru | 08-10-2003 11:47 PM |
I think burns would better back home...
He is off pugs, for sure next season with the 3 driver rule.
I expect this to be Tommi's last year. I would like to see him win one more rally though.
I think Burns' attutued is fine rallying is a abusive sport and he is one of the best drivers out there.

I guess I am jaded by the attitude and actions of people like Markko, Paniteze(sp), Carlos, and Markus. I see them as a better rep for the Subaru brand. All of them can drive.

Tommi is just having an off year. IMO he will be as good as ever next year (if he comes back)
Its not coincidental that Petter has gotten significantly faster while teammates with Tommi. Petter has learned a whole lot from Tommi, whereas Burns is not a team player, and has even admitted it himself.

With Burnsie at the pub for a couple pints:
Me: "Come Richard. Take one for the team. She isn't that big anyway."
Richard: "My wanker isn't going anywhere near that plump biscuit.I will go broke trying to feed her fish & chips."
Me: "Come on. For the team!!"
Richard: "Bugger off. I am going to Peugeot. They have the Perelli girls."
Me: "Guess what Richard?"
Richard: "What?"
Me: "I knew you weren't gonna do it! I pissed in your Guiness while you were in the lad's room splashing on your shoes!! I hope you get sent to F1 to learn about "team orders" too!!"
Sorry. I need some sleep.

That was good.
Ah the silly season.
I 'd love to see Burns back with SWRT, even if he is a whiner. I see him and Solberg really going at it though. 10X worse than him and McRae ever did. If he wins it this year (I think he will) Burns would be one of the few guys to switch rides after winning the championship, twice.
I think McRae and Makkinnin will go to Mitsu. Maybe they'll get both McRaes.

Don't forget about the 3rd driver rule next year. What is it? No wins in the past 2 or 3 seasons?

My pick:
Solberg - Sainz - Burns
- You need Sainz to coach Solberg, he needs inspiration
- Burns, will get you points.
- Solberg, whether he does well or not, always fun to watch.

The 3rd driver rule says no top 3 finishes in any rally in the last 3 seasons. Will Subaru even run a 3rd driver? They only did it once or twice all last season... that's one thing that's confused me. Peugeot and Citroen are running 3 and racking up the points. Unless it's a money thing (which it probably is, those cars aren't cheap) why doesn't Subaru run 3?
| gtguy | 08-11-2003 02:45 PM |
No way. Burns is a candy ass, and proved it by losing second place to Solberg at Finland. The new points system is the only reason that nerdwad is even leading the drivers' standings, and would but that this wasn't so.
If McRae could get himself reined in, I'd love to see him back at Subaru. Watching that segment where he was pushing hard, you just knew what was going to happen. He and Ringer haven't had the best relationship, either. That's another brain-lock error for Ringer (handing in the time card early).
Sainz just isn't consistently fast enough, and Panizzi is still too much of a specialist. Martin would be out of his freakin' mind to leave Ford right now. That car is going to be awesome...it's interesting how WRC mirrors F1, with a dominant car (Peugeot, Ferrari) getting caught up by its competitors (Williams, Ford). Love it.
Solberg has become my favorite driver, just based on his approach to the sport. He made me grin twice during Finland, once when he talked about his approach to the jumps, then again at his reaction to winning second place...like a kid in a candy store. I love seeing that, just like I love seeing Schumacher's elation whenever he wins. Too many of the other guys look like they're going to the gas chamber right after the podium ceremony in F1.
So no, anybody but Burns. Auriol...hell, Vatanen...anybody but Burns. He's good, he's consistent, I just don't like him.
Kevin

Petter has earned to be my favorite over the last 2 years. His enthusiasm and attitude are great. He seems pretty emotional sometimes but hey, how can you not like someone that used to be a champion ?
Colin McRae has a soft spot for Petter too. At one of the rallies in early'02(not sure!), Petter was having a very difficult time. Colin, still at Ford then, came over and sat in Petter's car and had a chat with him. That impressed me with Colin. Petter seemed to turn it around after that.

is that bad? well, if you want to see the biggest thrills, sure. but if subaru wants a chance at the manufacturer's championship, they have to have consistent drivers. Petter is on his way and is doing very good this year. Tommi has had consistent problems this year and last year. Burns is a very smart choice to bring back on the team.
I'd love to see Colin McRae back on Subaru as well, but not now. Colin crashes too much and still isn't consistent enough.

Love the Burn's keyboard.
I really hate the 3rd driver rule. It put Panizzi out of a job unless he goes to a ind. team.
Colin you can see when he gets reckless, if you watch a stage after he has had trouble you can see from his driving he is going to wreck.
I want Hollywood, Carlos and one of the Hyundai boys, they always finish in the points or close and they are stuck in a 2nd rate team. So they have the stuff just not the cars.

Tommi is still my favorite driver, but I agree that he isn't attacking like he used to. He can still win stages but generally only after he gets fired up after a problem.
I think Sainz would Subaru's best bet. People keep saying he isn't fast enough, but every year he's right in the thick of the Championship hunt. This year is no exception.
Everyone's all over Burns because he hasn't won this year. That's a shame because no one is giving him credit for being on the podium 6 times already. Unless I'm mistaken the next closest number of podiums by a driver this year is 4. I see no reason to question why Burns is leading the points. He'd do very well at Subaru but I agree that it may be better to put in a team player to support Petter and anyone else they may run (and I pray they run a third car so they can compete for the manufacturer title).
Then there's McRae. Don't know what to make of him at this point. In interviews he sounds much more mature, and he's been very supportive of the young drivers. But like many of you, as soon as I heard he got a time penelty I knew what was coming next. Pushing to the limit and then over it. Brilliant drive up until that point. So we know he's fast, he seems more mature out of the car, if Subaru (or anyone) can get him to relax and pursue a consistant drive over kamikaze runs he could be a great pickup.
If you think about it, though, there's a good chance he could end up without any drive next year. I don't think Skoda or Hyundai can afford all the bent up cars.

Tommi is going to retire at the end of the season, i think thats pretty clear from his demeaner in Finland, he was laughing and joking and really didnt give a damn about the result of the rally, he was just enjoying his last drive in Rally Finland.
Richard is a very smart driver, he is doing what he needs to do to win this years championship and nothing more. He was driving very well in Finland, without the car letting him down he could have been fighting on the last day for the win, although he would most likely have setled for second.
It isnt worth it to him to take huge risks for that second place against Petter, dont mistake this for not driving fast, he was absolutely flying, just not taking big risks like Petter did on those last 2 stages.
The pugs are now hitting problems because the Ford and Marko are pushing them to the limits, thats a significant change and Richards style of attack on this years championship is paying off as a result.
Richard back at Subaru, that would be good but i dont think it will happen, i think he will stay with Peugeot. Tommi is going to retire and if i were team manager at Subaru i would make sure he did, he isnt doing a good job in the car anymore. Colin, the guy disapoints me more each event, he was driving brilliantly in Finland until he had his one minute road penalty, then he lost the plot and threw away good points, that marks him out as an idiot, if i were Citroen i wouldnt keep him on, i would retain Carlos who is doing a much better job and bringing money to the team, not costing them millions.
So to me, i see Colin will leave Citroen and join either mitsubishi or Subaru or retire, Richard to stay put, Tommi to retire. If Colin does continue i expect he will dump Derek Ringer, maybe just before the end of the season and take chris patterson as his codriver.
There are lots of up and coming fast drivers about like Hirvonen, Latvala etc, drivers like Legaman simply arent fast enough and never will be for a WRC team, i dont see any USA based driver making it in WRC for a very long time, you dont have the support structure. I spent some time with the guys behind Latvala and Hirvonen in Finland, the support those guys have behind them in management and training is on a totally diferent level to anything a USA driver will ever see for the forseable future. Without that support you are not going to make it onto a WRC team.

My vote goes to Richard. This would be the only way to build a stronger team. His consistency and Petter's recklessness. Petter reminds me a lot of young Colin, very emotional and giving it all often a little too much. Richard would be there to cool him off and as a guarantee for Petter's championship. Carlos is a great mentor, but his days are numbered. He is still quick but will he be like that next year? Markko is under contract till 2006. Tommi has not much to prove any more and I'd say it is time to retire or go to Hyundai so they could possibly find more sponsors and spend more money on development. Subaru needs someone to keep Petter in check and Tommi is not doing it. Bring back Richard.
BTW, listen to all interviews a little more closely and you will find out that they are all whiners, and the one who really stands out as a whiner is Carlos (still my favourite driver).

I'd love to see Sainz back @ SWRT, but like John said I doubt Citroen will give him up. Loeb and Sainz makes a good team. If Burns wins the title maybe Pug will keep him and ditch Gronholm. Now that would bring balance to the team.

in the US version of the coverage nicky talked of a rumor of colin going to mitsu for a 3 year deal... which is intersting as at germany he also commeted that poppa mcrea offer both mcrea brothers to mitsu as a package deal
one thing to think about
subaru supports WRC to sell cars, winning is good but selling cars is more important. petter sells cars, as he is vibrant people person. burns/mcrea/tommi arn't.. sainz is the other notable true sportsman peronality
my truely poinless vote is for sainz
getting petter to sign a 3 year deal was a fantastic move for subaru
iirc sainz took the job at citroen at a pay cut.. losing his co driver ..i suspecet he will be the first cut

subaru supports WRC to sell cars, winning is good but selling cars is more important. petter sells cars, as he is vibrant people person. burns/mcrea/tommi arn't.. sainz is the other notable true sportsman peronality
my truely poinless vote is for sainz
getting petter to sign a 3 year deal was a fantastic move for subaru
iirc sainz took the job at citroen at a pay cut.. losing his co driver ..i suspecet he will be the first cut
| johnfelstead | 08-12-2003 07:18 PM |
they all compete to sell cars, i dont think the drivers image as such is an issue here.
Sainz has taken money to Citroen via his main sponsors, they pay in a big way for his drive. I think Carlos is at less risk of losing his seat than he was last year, he has done an outstanding job for Citroen.
Not so sure on the Colin story for mitsubishi? he has said if he cant get a top drive he would retire, and mitsubishi isnt a top drive IMHO.
I am not surprised Jimmy is trying to sell the services of both sons though, he was slumming it with me in Finland, stayed in the same student digs i did and was in the student bar i used too. :D So Colin's millions dont seem to be getting spread about the family so much.

John your observations I feel are very correct and a good forecast of what to come.
My heart was torn watching Tommi waste away that rally. It just irks me, there has to be a underlying factor. Yes, he did have a radio problem, but still.
Your observation on Jimmy McRae is very interesting.
You think of Carlos, to me, he is the MAN. You know that Telefonica-Movistar is going to follow him to Suby if he goes. I honestly think Carlos is doing extremely well for Citroen, and that is where he will stay as the Xsara comes of age.
Richard. Great driver, bigger tude. I think he will go back to Suby. His personality will clash w/Petter I think. I think he has done great at Peugeot, but that is just unnecessary pressure to win rallys when he is in the points race. He is taking care of the equipment and letting the chips fall. It could have be Markko or Petter to wreck out in Finland. Conservative, but smart.
Maybe Mitsu would like to see Colin launch the ColtWRC with Alistar? Who knows?
I cant wait till Skoda-Auto hammers out thier problems.
Ford? This is a new team Old Martini w/ the old champs are in the past. I think Duval-Martin will work out good.

Burnsy confirmed he is negociating with Peug AND Subaru. earlyer this year, he said he'd have absolutely NOTHING with the fact of driving a Suvbby for the next couple of year because they're the one who gave him his championship.
McRae is a HUGE question mark. The guy is FAST but he also crashes often.
i agree with John, but not on the Burnsy aspect. I think Peug will keep Gronholm and Panizzi. Gilles is getting better and better on gravel, and is still a HUGE THREAT on asphalt events. They'll have to get rid of Rovanperra tough.
I think Subaru will line-up Burnsy and Solberg for the next 3 years and I'd have NOTHING against that ;) Burns is a smart driver, fast on any roads and always in the top drivers aiming for the win. He knows he can'T really compete with the master of gravel (Gronholm), so he's going for regularity, and that's a sign that a driver using intelligence to manage his season.
Maybe I'm totaly off the chart with my predictions, but I think Burns wants to come back with the team who made him win.
3rd car is an open seat for Subaru. they'll probably go with a new prospect. Each team will with the exeption of Peug, who will probably go with Gardemeister (and a good call this will be).
cheers

I was sat next to Phil Short on the flight home, Phil is the brains behind the team management at Ford. It was interesting to hear him talk to some of the guys on the flight, he sounded very confident that the Focus is now the car to beat and that it works well on all surfaces. He was very much behind Marko Martin and thinks he is something special, Ford certainly are not missing Colin based on what he was saying.
I think Peugeot want to hold on to Richard, Provera was praising him in a big way for his Finland drive.
It was very interesting to see the crowd reactions to the various drivers in Finland, the finns dont seem to like Gronholme, they love Rovempera though. Most impresive driver visually for me was gardemeister in the Skoda, he was really pushing that car to the limits, very spectacular.
Scoop for you, Malcolm Wilson was in deap conversation with Robert Reid at the after rally party. Burns to Ford??? Derek Ringer spent all night drinking with Nicky Grist too, i bet they swapped a few stories! :D

Solberg has become my favorite driver, just based on his approach to the sport. He made me grin twice during Finland, once when he talked about his approach to the jumps, then again at his reaction to winning second place...like a kid in a candy store. I love seeing that... [/B][/QUOTE]
Yep!
"To finish first you must first finish" That is the way Richard Burns is driving this year and it is working. It would be OK if he came back with number 1 on his car.
Colin would be OK too but he would have to sign a couple addendum's to his contract:
1. Gets paid only if he finishes.
2. Must refund previous check if he rolls car and can't finish.
3. Can't attempt to kill co-driver during event if said co-driver screws up. What he does to co-driver on his own time is up to him.
4. Must wear "Red Mist" ankle bracelet. If "Red Mist" forms ankle bracelet automatically cuts off fuel supply 1000 rpm below redline.
As far as a third driver goes...we need someone fast who hasn't finished on a podium...
...hmmmm....
...how about a guy who finished in the points in Wales last year during a one off....
...he hauls arse...
...he is right under our nose...
...'iggins! :D
...and then Subaru wouldn't have to worry about him in the US anymore!

David higgins is driving in ProRally this year, Mark isnt and he was the brother who was driving the focus on the rally GB.
Mark was in Finland driving an F1600 Clio. He would be a great 3rd driver, he is very experienced in a WRC car doing a lot of testing for Ford over the last few years.
Marks manager is Penny Mallory, who does the chanel 4 comentary, they are working hard to get Mark a WRC program sorted out, he deserves it based on tallent.

I think they should move Toshi Arai from PGT to WRC, but if nothing else I would like to see either Marcus Gronholm or Markko Martin, both of those cats are really cool.

Don't forget, Colin blew his chance at the championship in '01 by rolling in GB. I will never forget the look Nicky Gave him after the roll. A cross between  and .
| ibis | 08-14-2003 04:00 PM |
I wish Toshi could hack it, but he never seems to do well when he gets his chance. Does he choke? Who knows. He kills it in Goup N, but just can't pull it together when he's in the WRC car.
on a side note, Markko isn't going anywhere....might as well stop wishing for him to switch teams.
I wouldn't mind seeing Colin at Subaru. The man is passionate. He goes for it!! I like that. Play it safe? It works for Burns, I respect him for his consistancy, but hell, seeing Colin and Petter go balls out on every rally would be cool!!
just my opinion

DONE DEAL :D :D
Makkinen is retiring..........and Burnsy just signed a 2 year deal with Subby (just as I explained  hehehe)
Panizzi is on the verge of signing with Mitsu for a full-season drive for the next two years.
So, what will Peugeot do?? They have Gronholm, Rovanperra......they're aiming for Gardemeister (probably for their 3rd drive), so WHO will run in the #2 Peug?? I'm betting Mister Colin McRae ;) He's got no drive for next year since Citron is keeping Loeb and Sainz. So good old Mc Crash will end up with the red-French rockets....you can put money on this ;)
Fierce competition for the next couple seasons.........and this season is a nail-bitter so far, very competitive.
So, next season :
- Peugeot -
#1 - Marcus Gronholm
#2 - Colin McRae
#3 - ??? Probably -->Toni Gardemeister
- Citron -
#1 - Sebastien Loeb
#2 - Carlos Sainz
#3 - Phillip Bugalski
- Ford -
#1 - Markko Martin
#2 - Franois Duval
#3 - ???
- Subaru -
#1 - Peter Solberg
#2 - Richard Burns
#3 - ???
- Mitsubishi -
#1 - Allister McRae
#2 - Gilles Panizzi
#3 - ???
Two awsome seasons coming up :D

I saw that about Tommi retiring at the end of the season.
I would like to see Loix come over along with Carlos Sainz maybe.
I wonder if tehy have considered Pat Richards? He hasn't done that great in Group N so far this year. It seems like he has had quite a few retirements.

I highly doubt Ford OR Subaru will take on a third driver.
Mistubishi wont be coming back until Mid season (if at all!) so Gilles wont be sitting around waiting for them! Of course, we will have to wait and see.
I have no idea where Colins going, I duobt they will keep him on Citroen. Simon Jean-Joseph is the official third driver, so Sebastien and Carlos are probably sticking with them.
Peugeot. They will keep Marcus and Colin seems to be the only other driver.
Of course you forgot about Skoda. If their car is any good in the hands of a professional then someone important could be driving for them... I doubt it though

I'll stick my neck out and predict that Colin will go to Skoda or Hyundai, maybe pairing up with lil bro at either.
edit: It would appear that 2 of the 3 at Citroen next year will be Loeb and Simon Jean-Joseph, who once drove for Subaru:
