Well Montagny is officially out of Super Aguri for France 2006 (Dick Move, IMO). So you can replace him with Sakon Yamamoto.

I don't think McLaren is going to lose both their drivers, and I don't think Klien is going to stay. Davidson is probably going to Super Aguri so he can finally get a race seat. The McLaren B team might become a reality too and try and shoehorn into 08.
| MattDell | 07-05-2006 04:49 PM |
I'm curious. Why do you think Davidson is going to Super Aguri when Super Aguri is hell-bent on having a Japanese-only team?
-Matt
-Matt
| StuBeck | 07-05-2006 04:53 PM |
Aguri says he wants to have him! He wants an all japanese team when he's crap so he can get more sponsorship. Next year with an actual chassis and more money I think he's going to be a lot better than he is now.

How would a Merc B team come about with Prodrive being the 12th and final team in 08? A buy out of Super Aguri or Midland?

They come in 07. If they offer up the $48m bond and their own chassis their technically isn't anything which says they can't run in 07. Although the possibility of this happening is unlikely since the FIA doesn't like to be outsmarted.

Sort of, every team is up for sale if someone offered the right price, even Ferrari or Renault. I think that now that they're getting some results from the car (and going in very different directions than many others) they're less willing to sell than before.

Davidson has said in an interview that he wouldn't go to a bottom rung team. Right now SA is as low as you can go and even with a new chassis the prognosis isn't good for next year. He's realistic about his position in F1 and doesn't seem to upset about it. There is too much talent in F1 right now, and it's all about who you know.
Of course he wants to race, but it would have to be for a top or headed for the top team. If he were to take a chance the one I could see is Prodrive. They are a determined outfit.

They wouldn't be outsmarting the FIA. The FIA has said they would entertain a Dirvex entry for '07, but simply that they wouldn't have a spot in '08. Makes for a bad investment to run a time for a single year (unless the team can completely mop up).

The Dutch company 'Lost Boys' have submitted a bid to Midland that they are seriously considering. They said the team really wasn't for sale, but the number Lost Boys offered them couldn't be ignored. As far as I know, Midland hasn't yet accepted or rejected the deal.

I thought they already accepted the deal. Correct me I'm wrong but the Lost Boys sponsorship sticker is already on the Midland Toyota. Unless they already sponsor the team before their offer to purchase.

Why the team cap anyway? Why not let anyone who wants to run, run?

Lost Boys offered i beleive $100 Million to buy Midland, which is twice what Midland paid Jordan for that spot, so thats why they are considering. They went into F1 to get money, and they did just that.
i agree to the Klien comment too, i dont think hell be in. But i just filled in that seat with the current driver because i havent heard anything about it yet. Coulthard i dont think has gotten an extension either, so theres a possibility he wont be there as well.

The thing is he HAS to run at some point. He keeps on not taking race seats and he's getting older and older. In his three races he's run he hasn't done anything (not his fault though) but having fast drives on Friday isn't enough to get a drive in a Ferrari or a Renault. He needs to get himself a ride somewhere so he can prove he still has some skill in races. I think it would be better for him to destroy Sato at SA, then move up to another team, rather than somehow get a job at Renault or somewhere and get shown up for half the season because he hasn't driven in a race for a few years.

-Matt
Yes, there is a limit of 12 teams. What could happen is this limit going away and them mandating that the tracks include more pit facilities. This is the biggest problem, places like Indy only have spots for 12 teams as it is. The easiest way to get around this is to give all the teams only 3 pit spaces instead of the top 3 or 4 getting 4. This would easily allow another team in. I think the max which will be allowed is 13 teams though.
They don't want anyone to run simply because there isn't enough quality teams out there. Maybe in a few years when costs go down they'll be able to bring back pre-qual but right now it isn't a possibility.

It wouldn't be, but if they can prove they have speed there is a chance that the FIA would change their mind and allow them in for 08.
I haven't heard anything about Montoya moving. It looks like Webber might be uot at Williams and Wurz getting his seat so Williams doesn't have more contract problems.

Nope. The teams for '08 are already locked in place. It doesn't matter if a team shows up for '07, they won't be allowed in '08 (unless there name is already on the list). There isn't a loophole where someone can slide in by logging an entry in '07.
This is why the FIA asking for '08+ team entries 18 months in advance was kind of wierd.

Under the current guidelines teams which are part of the championship in one year will automatically be part of the championship the next year if they lodge the small figure needed. I know what the FIA has said and I pretty much agree with you, but I think if a team can prove they have the speed in 07 and can get the other teams to agree their is a soemwhat good chance they could be let in as a 13th team in 08.

I was under the impression that the number 12 was picked because of pit lane space and not speed.
| StuBeck | 07-06-2006 01:40 PM |
Yea, its based on pit space, I'm saying that if a team could prove they have the speed to be a quality entree (not like some of the cars which ran in pre-qual in the early 90's) they might make an exception and go back to having 26 cars in teh field.

Cool :)
Yea, it'd be awesome if it happened, but I don't think it will, especially with hard headed teams like Ferrari at the top, asking them to give up a pit space they barely use is asking too much.

I haven't heard anything confirmed but that was the rumor around Wurz going to Williams since the day he signed for them. I have to agree that most likely the reason why he left but I think Frank really does like Webber and he did sign Nico to a long term contract. I would be good to see Wurz in a race seat but I honestly would pick Webber 1st. He's technical and fast if sometimes a little overly aggresive.

Coulthard in for '07
Coulthard set to sign new Red Bull deal
Wednesday, July 12th 2006, 16:45 GMT
Scot David Coulthard is set to re-sign with the Red Bull Racing team for the 2007 season, according to this week's Autosport.
The new deal, due to be announced by the end of July, is believed to be for one year, with an option for a further season.
The 35-year-old Scot, in his 12th full season of Grand Prix racing, has made no secret of the fact that he wants to remain at Red Bull Racing, so he can drive the RB3 car designed by Adrian Newey.
Coulthard drove Newey's cars for his entire F1 career, first at Williams then at McLaren, before his switch to Red Bull for 2005.
The Scottish driver has put on some impressive performances this season, scoring Red Bull's maiden podium finish at the Monaco Grand Prix. Coulthard has scored 10 points so far this year.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said earlier this year that he saw no reason to let Coulthard go.
Horner told the Press Association: "He and I get along very well and if the relationship is working and it's right why stop it?
"He is tremendously fit and let's not forget Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill were older than he was when they won their World Championships. He still has a lot to offer and whilst he is still motivated and performing why should he stop?"
The identity of Coulthard's teammate, however, remains unknown, with Austrian Christian Klien looking unlikely to be retained for a third consecutive season.
Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz said earlier this year Klien needed to raise him game in order to keep his seat. The Austrian billionaire, however, suggested this week that Klien still had a chance to stay.
"Klien has another couple of races to prove what he can do and that he deserves being there," Mateschitz said.
Klien, who made his Grand Prix debut with the team in 2004, has scored just one point so far this year.
The Austrian, however, believes he deserves a place in the team: "Some time soon my bad luck streak will come to an end, I know I can deliver," he said.
thanks Ferg for finding that.
Kovalainen confirmed at Renault for 2007
By Pablo Elizalde Wednesday, September 6th 2006, 09:03 GMT
Heikki Kovalainen will race alongside Giancarlo Fisichella at the Renault team next season, the French squad confirmed on Wednesday.
The confirmation puts an end to speculation over the second Renault seat following the exit of world champion Fernando Alonso to the McLaren team at the end of the year.
"I am thrilled to get the opportunity to race with a world champion team like Renault," said Kovalainen. "I have been a member of the Renault Driver Development programme since 2002, when I had the distant ambition of one day becoming an F1 driver.
"It is a fantastic feeling to have finally achieved that. My two seasons testing for the team, as well as my time in GP2, have allowed me to build my technical knowledge and to understand what it takes to win in Formula One. I have also had the opportunity to show the team what I can do, and it is a great motivation to know that they believe in me.
"It will be a fantastic feeling to line up on the grid in Melbourne, but that is still a long way off. At the moment, I am totally focused on helping Renault win the 2006 championship."
The 25-year-old Finn, last year's runner-up in the GP2 championship, was Renault's test driver in 2006, covering over 28,000kms.
"Everybody at Renault is very optimistic about our driver line-up for 2007 and beyond," said Renault team boss Flavio Briatore, who also announced he will be staying with the team at least until 2008.
"We have taken the conscious decision to build for the future, without compromising the stability of the team in the short term.
"Giancarlo is a proven force in Formula One and Heikki is already fully integrated into the team. After seeing performances in testing this season, we have very high hopes for him."
Still no confirmation on that, last news was that they were "close" to a deal. Sato is confirmed though.
Same deal with Toro Rosso, nothing confirmed but no rumors of them changing the lineup.
The only really open ride left is the second Spyker seat. Might be Montiero, might be Klein or someone else.
Oh and KAX, Button and Rubens were confirmed for Honda awhile ago. :)

Aguri confirm Davidson to race in 07.
Super Aguri confirm Davidson for 2007
Wednesday, November 15th 2006, 12:08 GMT
Briton Anthony Davidson will race with the Super Aguri team next season alongside Japanese driver Takuma Sato.
Davidson left his position as Honda's test driver after six seasons with the outfit.
He will return to racing for the first time since he took part in last year's Malaysian Grand Prix, where he replaced Sato at Honda but retired after just a handful of laps.
"This is a great opportunity for me and I'm really excited about my first full season as a race driver in Formula One," said Davidson. "I'd like to thank everyone at the Super Aguri team and Honda for giving me this chance.
"I'm looking forward to working with everyone at SAF1 - I've been impressed with the improvements the team has made through the 2006 season, and I can already see from my first visits to the factory that the team is very hard-working and highly motivated. I can't wait to get started."
The 27-seven-year-old had made his Grand Prix debut with the Minardi team in 2002.
Super Aguri made their Formula One debut this season, finishing in 11th position with no points.
Team principal Aguri Suzuki added: "I am delighted to have Takuma and Anthony as our drivers for next year. Takuma performed outstandingly in our first year and I hope that he will be able to build on this with us next year.
"As you know, Anthony has been with Honda as a test driver for a while now and he brings to us a wealth of experience in Formula One.
"I believe that he will make a positive impact on the team and that he will fit in perfectly with the family atmosphere that we have at Super Aguri team. I am looking forward to seeing both of our drivers rising to the challenge of the 2007 season."

McLaren comment on Hakkinen return
Tuesday, November 14th 2006, 13:36 GMT
McLaren say they do not currently plan to draft in former champion Mika Hakkinen as Fernando Alonso's Formula One teammate next season, amid speculations that the Finn could make a comeback.
The Mercedes-powered team did confirm, however, that the 38-year-old Finn had recently spent time in their race simulator.
"Mika has been in the simulator, and following his visit to Brazil (last month) wished to understand if he could contribute to our programme," said McLaren chief executive Martin Whitmarsh.
"We currently have no plans to run Mika alongside Alonso next year. The identity of our second driver will be announced in due course."
Hakkinen, world champion with McLaren in 1998 and 1999, retired from Formula One at the end of 2001 and has been racing for Mercedes in the DTM German touring car series.
He was in Brazil as a guest of Mercedes to watch old Ferrari rival Michael Schumacher bow out in the final race of the championship.
The Finn revealed earlier this year he had turned down a chance to drive for Williams last year after that Formula One team approached him in 2004.
Spaniard Alonso, 25, joins McLaren from Renault at the end of the year after becoming the youngest double champion in Formula One history.
His teammate for 2007 has yet to be confirmed, with Kimi Raikkonen departing for Ferrari and McLaren saying only that they expect to make an announcement before the end of the year.
Briton Lewis Hamilton, 21, is a front runner while 35-year-old Pedro de la Rosa hopes to be part of an all-Spanish line-up after moving up from being a test driver to replace Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya as a race stand-in this year.
Montagny showed how good the car could be. Speaking of which, why didn't Montagny keep his seat? Didn't he outperform Yamamoto every time?

Montagny switched teams. I think its good Ant got a drive, but I think he is a bit overrated (sort of like Jenson) but it will be interesting seeing how he does next year. I think SA will be a lot better then they were this year. If they have a new chassis I think they could be competting with Midland easily and possibly even STR.

Klien is also a test driver for Honda too.

i dont think SA will be up with Spyker yet. they have to build another new car, or modify last years since they cant do customer stuff until 08. it would be great if they manage it, but im not holding my breath.
