spec c vent or sunroof? part 1

David Glasscock 10-10-2006 05:05 PM

spec c vent or sunroof?
i know it's my car and i should do what i want to do to it, but i'm not sure what would stand out more? i see a lot of cars have spec c sunroof which looks great, but you dont get a lot of sunlight but it's jdm. on teh other hand they are now installing sunroofs in sti's limited. nice thing about it is you get sun and air.

sunroof

or

spec c- roof scoop
Paintballguy 10-10-2006 05:14 PM

I really want one of those spec c roof vents.

The sunroof is just gonna add weight. They are nice but when I had one I never really used it. I just like the idea of having that vent.
tacomaprime 10-10-2006 05:15 PM

Hmmm, tough call. I would almost rather have the sunroof due to the larger opening. But the spec c vent is pretty frickin cool. I have been debating something like this for me wagon. I was inquiring at the local ziebart on a powered sunroof this last weekend. 499 for a powered sunroof with a lifetime warranty against leaks.
calib17a 10-10-2006 07:30 PM

I had a sun/moon roof on my 93 gsr and I kind of miss it. I don't have this mod but definitely on my future mod list, next to JDM rear wiper windshield mod.
Here are some pros and cons:

Sunroof:
1. You will lose a couple of inches of head room.
2. Didn't provide any direct stream of air unless you keep your hand cupped above your head while you drive or you can crack another window open, but then you get a tornado in the car.
3. Adds a considerable amount of high cg weight which will affect handling.
4. I'm weary of aftermarket sunroofs leaking even if there is a lifetime warranty. I'm sure they'll fix it but what you have to deal with trying to fix a leak multiple times? That would be annoying really fast.
5. Good for smokers
6. Nice to stare at the stars when your parked.

JDM roof vent:
1. Very little added weight if any, will not affect handling.
2. Direct stream of outside air w/o opening any other window.
3. You will lose you map lights.
4. Very JDM, and unique to Subaru showing a part of it's rally heritage. You can even add the rally roof scoop.
5. No loss of power due to having A/C on.
6. May even help with keeping windows from getting fogged up.
7. No loss of headroom.
8. Cannot see full view of big/small dipper.
subywrx 10-10-2006 07:48 PM

If you want to go for looks/or something folks hardly has in US then the roof vent (very rare mod). If you like that whole sun roof thing then get that. Also the new STi Limited have sun roof if you plan on making your look like that.
enewtabie 10-10-2006 08:56 PM

I like the roof vent myself, but sometimes I wish I had a sunroof.
JBravo920 10-10-2006 09:34 PM

The problem with having a sunroof in a car that doesnt come stock with one is that you will have to cut/remove the support beam that is under the headliner, and from what Ive heard, on the issue of saftey anyway, is that you dont want to remove this, with the roof vent this piece will stay in tact. I would recommend the roof vent, I think it looks better, it has more effect, and its just plain JDM mad tyte yo!!!!
BrigadoonB 10-10-2006 09:44 PM

I would get a roof vent but they are just too damn expensive! If someone was to make an inexpensive set-up and sell them at a "out the door" price, they would be rich!!
Legba 10-10-2006 09:58 PM

I like the roof vent although I imagine it's pretty loud going down the highway.
I would get a roof vent but they are just too damn expensive! If someone was to make an inexpensive set-up and sell them at a "out the door" price, they would be rich!!
I have been dying for one of the mad scientists at DIY stuff to come up with a $40 home depot special roof vent (obviously it would need to be paint matched, so that would cost more) I know someone can do it, they just havent put their imagination to it yet. It would be hard considering they have the big piece that takes up where the map lights are and everything. But Im sure somebody could figure something out, and maybe even let us keep our map lights in the process!!! So, Kings of DIY, I beg of you to create something that will work!!!! I have done almost every other DIY mod to my car, I need something new to look forward to!!!!
subaru222 10-10-2006 10:51 PM

I love my roof vent its great frist 06 sti in the usa to have it done it was my frist mod:devil:

007WRX 10-11-2006 02:05 AM

Sun roof.
turbokonejo 10-11-2006 02:09 AM

Damn I just did a search and I cant belive I've had this thing collecting dust for 1 year now. I was in Phase one. I have been thinking about selling it but I would most likely end up buying another one down the road once I'm about done with the car. Sorry I think ill still hold one to it.
3. You will lose you map lights.
I saw a rear mirror replacement, that looked OEM (probably was the same company) and had compass, temp, and two map lights. My wife wants the temperature, and the map lights looked like a bonus to me.

Products->Automotive->Interior Mirrors->Auto Dimming (E/C) Mirrors

or go here http://www.cipausa.com/autodimming.htm

I'm looking at #36501, but if you want just the map lights you can use #36301. Or even cheaper is the 36000, no auto dimming, but it has the map lights.

Roof vent FTW!!!
designfate 10-11-2006 01:26 PM

just a note.

Roof vents are made for the rally cars. It opens just enough to shoot cool air into the cars cabin to cool down the drivers. It has nothing to do with sunlight. You probably wouldnt get much light considering it opens only a few inches.

I say go for the Spec-c vent. It looks sick and i wat go get one aswell haha.
dancemf6 10-11-2006 03:26 PM

Also the roof vents arent for speeds over 75mph.
subaru222 10-11-2006 03:29 PM

I driven over 75 with it open
JBravo920 10-11-2006 03:50 PM

I believe you arent supposed to open them at any fast speeds, they can be open, just not opened while the 75mph wind blows by it.
subaru222 10-11-2006 04:03 PM

I belive it 40mph not open at
EnterTheDragon 10-11-2006 04:25 PM

neither, leave the roof alone!
juste_frank 10-11-2006 04:40 PM

Get the spec C roof vent with the cover. I'm doing it next summer, it looks great!
dangerousatom 10-11-2006 04:56 PM

I have driven over 100mph with mine in quick bursts with no problems. You definetly dont want to pop it over say 30mph and you rilly cant even close it once your goin over 55-60mph. It brings an emence amount of air into the cabin . . . . along with to ocasional pissed off hornet unless you have the oober top secret mesh hook-up ;) If U ask I may tell U where to get it.....?
Also the roof vents arent for speeds over 75mph.
Not true. That's not even close to accurate. The warning(in Japanese) says not to open above 80kmh(50mph). Once it's already open, it's safe to go over 50mph. I've personally been over 100mph with mine open. At the track.
Mann Made Legacy 10-11-2006 05:37 PM

While I personally wouldn't want one, the install must be fun!

dangerousatom 10-11-2006 08:59 PM

^^ its a carbon fiber vinal......those cluthes are 4sale!!

^ the install aint too hard, its prety straight forward and simlpe......comes with absolutly no instructions or templits

Last I checked www.Gruppe-s.com was $375 and the cheepest I belive
WhiteFox 10-11-2006 09:08 PM

I don't like the sunroof in these cars. It seems too far back, and its small.
David Glasscock 10-11-2006 09:37 PM

Legba 10-12-2006 11:41 PM

I want one!
arfrce 10-15-2006 09:11 PM

OK you guys check this S%!$ out. I know that vent is jdm an all. And yes it came on the homologated subie. This vent opens forward and backward and you get to keep your map lights as well. Atleast I would think you could. And with the cowl on top of it, well you be the judge of that let me know what you think after you go to the sight. (just scroll down)
http://www.writerguy.com/primitive/body.htm
This one is made for rallying. And that is the real deal. Thats where these cars made themselves any way.Let me know later.

Oh and it is 180 for the cowl and the vent. The vent has a screen on it as well.So you don't have to beg a fellow scoobier where he got his.
dangerousatom 10-15-2006 11:34 PM

I dout its as nice as the Spec C. It proably doesn't come with any trim pieces to blend itself into the roof of the car. It looks from the picture that it needs to be rivited-screwed-welded into place to make it secure. I assume most rally cars dont even have hood liners so the vent probably seals rite to top and bottom of the roof steel.....making it difficult to blend nicely with the hoof liner. Also since it can be opened forward or backward....I assume again that it doesnt rilly lock down tight ( to prevent opening from outside the car ) I know my Spec C is prety much impossible to open from out side the car and would be screwed up if I where to try and pry it up. Dont forget, you have to get the ?fiberglass? scoop cover painted where the Spec C is factory painted to match.

The stainless steel mesh inserts I make are freekin cheep
BrownBoy 10-15-2006 11:42 PM

Well...I have a sunroof, but if I were to buy a roof scoop, it would be this one:

arfrce 10-16-2006 04:49 AM

Yeah thats the same Scoop in on that web page. What he is talkin about is the vent that is on the web page. I'll have to e-mail them and ask about it locking, and about the mounting it with the roof liner in. If it makes a difference or not. Hey on your spec-C you think you could mount that just behind the map lights? In between the dome and map? I wanna be able to retain my map and dome.. If I could keep both I'm cool with the subaru one. how do you post pics on here? I have tried it the other way but does not work for some reason
Thanks
dangerousatom 10-16-2006 03:20 PM

The Spec C comes with a welded steel bracket-brace the mounts into factory spots up in the frount of the roof assembly. So you dont have any other place to put it, sept for where its got to go
JBravo920 10-16-2006 04:27 PM

I hate the fact that I actually really like that roof scoop! I see it and think it would look kind of ricer, but if its actually functional then its not really ricer...Its a good price and I think it looks great, but I just dont know if I could put that huge scoop on my roof, and I hope it would seal as well as the other roof scoop.
arfrce 10-16-2006 11:35 PM

I am waiting to hear back from the company. But let me say this. The cowl that the sight has advertised is damn near the exact same thing. And the price difference is like 100 bucks compared to 500 at one sight. I won't name any names. All it is, is fiberglass, for 500 bucks it better be carbon fiber!!! LoL. I mean damn 500 bucks for a small cowl like that give me a break. Yeah I just looked that rally sight is 502 thats a savings of 400 bucks Over this sights cowl...http://www.writerguy.com/primitive/body.htm

Hey how much were those hood shocks? And where did you get them?
David Glasscock 10-17-2006 01:18 AM

well gruppe-s sells it for 375.00 shipped, for the spec c roof vent..

should have it in a week!
arfrce 10-17-2006 07:21 AM

Well let me know how the install goes. I wanna know how the kit sets you up for the inside modification. Or if it does at all. And if you see some kind of a pattern under the head liner. thanks jeff

Oh and good luck on cutting your roof lol.. that is if you are doing it not someone else.
David Glasscock 10-17-2006 10:27 AM

nope going to have it installed. that way i know it's done right!lol
dangerousatom 10-17-2006 11:22 AM

It comes with no instructions or templets. . . . basicly you remove the A-B-C pillars, rear mirror, and head liner, install the steel bracket, install the interior trim piece and then trace a line on the underside of the roof. ( outside of trim ) Then take it all out, and cut the hole in the roof. Now you have to put the head liner back in to get the spot for the hole that goes in it. Its a back and forth process to do it rite and well . . . .remember cut small 1st cuz if it the hole is too big .....mmmm sucks to be you

In all reality its a fairly easy install just take Ur time, it will make sense when U get the pieces and start puting them in place
dangerousatom 10-17-2006 11:29 AM

Ah it took me a while to find it but here is the full install with detailed pic's
