NOW HERES THE FUNNY PART!
if you read in the speed channel forums
they changed it because they think americans want instant gradification. sooo
they reasoned that people wouldn't/didn't want to wait till the next day to see what happened ..
soo they re-edit the whole thing and air it a WEEK later
i knew they were dumb ####s but this is unbelievable
the thread at speed.tv.com here
wonder why they didn't do the same thing with dakar .. and release it in oh say july

#1 it's pretty cool of Speed to actually have someone involved and on the boards and asking the fans questions.
#2 that thread was in November... no way it was missed by impreza.net until now right?
#3 if it helps get more people into WRC in the long term that means we will get same day coverage back I'm sure...

To me an extra 3 or 4 days doesnt matter. I know who won before it's on TV anyways(www.rally-live.com). And now I wont have to stay up until midnight 4 nights to see it.

Or coverage of one way adjustable anti-sway bars - you know the suspension is either stiff on the left side, or stiffer on the left side.
And to set the record straight - yes they still would be brother and sister, and yes she would still be his mama.

Honestly guys and gals, how many of you were actually at home at night when the same day coverage came on? Only times I was was when it was either too cold to go out or if I wasn't feeling too good.
This is kinda why the XFL went under after only 1 season, its target TV audience was out at bars drinking while the games were on.
Most of the WRC's fans here in the US were out about town on Friday, Saturday, and even Sunday night.
And yeah, I'll take quality over quantity anytime, and I've been a WRC fan since WAY before most everyone even knew what 'FiA' meant......

I actually do watch whatever ones I can live. For thoes I can't make, that's what TIVO is for. If they were going to reformat to one show per rally I would prefer it to be aired on the last day of the rally - same day. Not this week or so later crap.
| TimStevens | 01-23-2003 10:54 PM |
I religiously taped every show and watched it the next night. Yes, it was on too late, but these are modern times, and that's easy enough to fix for yourself.

So bummed.
I know I will be wathcing much less speedvision just by default of these changes.
Taped and viewed every rally for the last 4 years.
Week later is a move back to when we didnt even get live f1 coverage in the early years of speedvision. Bad move.

This is the best move speed has made since it was speedvision.
Their coverage last year was nothing short of completely sucked. I have watched their coverage for many years and last year was one of the worst by far.
So what if it was same day, the fact was the coverage blew. The announcer sucked and the footage was boring and replayed about three times the same show. The best part of the show was the rally xs show on monday night, after it was already over. This gave them time to edit and only use the good footage.
What happens this year remains to be seen, but I have no issues with waiting a few days if the coverage improves and the footage is actually exciting. Two hours of great footage a week late is much better than one hour of so so footage a night on the same day.
If you want the coverage to stay you need people to watch it, and last years coverage did not draw fans, if anything it drove away more fans (most everyone I knew that watched religiously years before hardly watched at all last season). This is good move if it makes the coverage exciting enough to draw in fans.

I'm with Jimmy and a couple others. Last year's coverage was appalling.
The continual showing of the same in-car shots was obnoxious and in the earlier part of the season there was no organization to what they were showing. One minute you're watching an in-car on Stage 5 and then Ralphie's giving us the results for Stage 2. It made little to no sense for half the season. By then I had quit watching.
I'm for QUALITY over quantity in this case. I'll gladly wait a week to get the much better quality that we had in years prior to last. 2001 was thousands of times better than 2002 was even though we had a small fraction of coverage.
Sorry, I'm not going to be signing anything, especially since it won't change a thing!!! Do you really expect them to say "hey, we screwed up! Let's bring Ralph back to give us the piss poor coverage we had last season that no one watched!"

Guys, you're forgetting one thing. Last years (and the years previous) coverage were put together by the UK folks who do the rally coverage for Europe. They've been doing it for years... do you really thing Speed is going to be able to do a much better job than them?
I'm maintaining hope, but not holding my breath.

$20 bucks says they are later so they can get Nicky Grist on every broadcast. Who will take this bet?
I was bummed at first, then it came to me last night in bed. I have no problem waiting a few extra days for Nicky, cause like TS, I am listening to rally radio and know what is happening anyway.

If it's nicky and not whatshisface, then I'll post on here and quite sincerely say I was wrong, and that the delay is a good thing :)

No, it will be both, I predict. Just like you would never want Madden to do play by play (because we need to be told that the team that gets the ball in the end zone more will win the game  ). Nicky will be a color commentator, and I doubt they will get rid of Ralph.
For some reason, I am kinda getting to like his comments. I think he started to figure out that the WRC and its fans are not at all like nascar fans. He is getting better every rally. I hated him at first, too.

I live right in the middle of hill billy NASCAR country in Charlotte, NC. The only light that I had was that I could get away from all the left hand turns and watch WRC on Speed Channel. I will save myself the money and cancel the extra cable. Next thing they are going to take away is Two Wheel Tuesdays. I am sure there is something NASCAR they can put in that spot. Then it is F1 and the list goes on. I can't remember a time that I did not turn on Speed and not see something NASCAR. Maybe a channel like FOX sports or ESPN 2 will pick it up.
| jaybird | 01-24-2003 09:32 AM |
I've been a Rally fan for almost 10 years. I'm with the others last years coverage could have been better to say the least. I remeber when we got a blurb if we were lucky. If a few day delay = better quality then I'm all for it. The time slot is better too. Nicky Grist is the host. Should be all good. I'm withholding judgment until it airs.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks there's going to be a jump in quality with the 2 hour shows. It's still going to be Ralf, so the only thing that will change is more crappy American porno-quality rock, and a lack of repetitive in-car footage (jeez, was it really that bad? Get up and grab a beer or something during it...).
I'm in the "watched same day coverage everytime I could" camp. Personally, I think I'll probably stop watching altogether. A week later I will have forgotten about it entirely, especially since I already know who won and am looking forward to next rally. Watching same day coverage gives a sense of tension (and thus excitement) that you can't get otherwise.
Hopefully Speed will notice a decline in viewership and bring back the same day coverage. Those who agree can help by joining me in my personal boycott. It's honestly enough to make me drop my expanded cable coverage and save a few bucks each month.
Grist in the mill in new media life
Monte Carlo 24/01/2003 14:00:10
Nicky Grist is finding his new life in the media an exciting but tiring choice. Having moved away from co-driving after his split with Colin McRae after they retired from Rally New Zealand in 2002, Grist is on the Monte and in his new role.
"I'm absolutely shattered after just half a day of the rally," admitted the Welshman. "It is quite exciting. I'm involved in the sport I love and I'm able to share my experiences with so many people."
Grist explained his new life now he has relinquished the post as McRae's co-driver. "I'm doing an international programme for WRC TV on Eurosport, Speed TV etc and I'm writing columns for various magazines around the world. I'm busier than ever."
 Copyright wrc.com
I've seen somewhere else that Nicky IS doing the Speed Coverage.
The new WRC website is great! The dashboard is really cool. I'm listening now. She is talking about the coverage on Speed Channel in the States.

It is entirely possible that Sheheen is still doing the coverage, but if the video is improved that will be a step in the right direction. The babbling of Sheheen along with the repetitive footage is what was so dissapointing last season.
I think Speed will do a good job putting it together, they will use the same footage and just cut out a lot of the repeitive footage.
Also, those that think that a drop in ratings will bring back the same day coverage, I think you are on the wrong track. I know that the ratings for the same day coverage were worse than the season before when they just had the 1 hour recap shows. So they are listening to the ratings, the fact the coverage took a turn for the worse last season and people watched less is what has lead to this new format. Hopefully it will live up to what is expected.

I posted this petiton a while ago and got a very negative response.
So many non WRC people on this board...you all suck. I still say you don't know what owning a Subaru is all about. I'm sorry but going as fast as possible in a strait line is not what owing a subaru is all about...the WRC is.
From what I can tell most people in North America can't tell left turns from..."square right, don't cut".
Hence speed tv's coverage.

I'm also in the camp of people wondering why everyone is freaking out now. Speed told everyone they were doing exactly this months ago.
As for those of you who are going to boycott, I hope you realize you're just helping to see to it that WRC is dropped completely. As was pointed out above, the ratings for the same day coverage were lower than the 1-hour recaps that were delayed by weeks. So Speed is trying a different format; if the ratings drop further, you can expec to see even LESS WRC, I assure you.
With the ownership of FOX, Speed is no longer about showing only what enthusiasts want to see. Fox expects to make money from it, I'm sure. If 4 hours of WRC coverage doesn't pay for 4 hours of air time, it'll go away. If re-runs of Outlaws or NASCAR do better, they'll take WRC's place.

High Frequency High Pitch Noise

I would still like same day coverage, but the squeal generated from the wireless transmission of audio or some other technical side affect has made most of the cockpit shots unbearable to listen to.
Has anybody else noticed the terrible droning whistle sound from the Peugot team ?
Uggghh. As long as they do a better job of post-production this time I guess it will be OK, but I am going to miss it. Oh well more Playstation Rallying then.

As for why the broadcasts weren't popular last year, people have mentioned the main reasons already: lack of promotion and bad air-times.

Actually I cannot fault promotion, you could not watch a single show last season without a WRC ad coming on during it. They were constantly running ads, so people did know about them.
As for time slots, when do you suggest they do it? I dont know how much better 8-11pm could be (west to east coast). If they are gonna be same day that is prime time, maybe a little late on the east coast, but that has to happen if its not gonna be too early on the west. I could actually see the time slots being a problem since they were on Friday-Sunday night, the nights people go out. Maybe it was better because the season before they were on Monday night when people were around, but then again, that would not be same day.
Lastly, I dont blame either of those things because its not like it was just low, but actually went down, meaning many regulars from the year before were not watching this past season.
Now one thing that may have played the most important role which we can not know for sure, is the fact that they were played a hundred times a month. This might have lead to the low same day ratings since people knew they would have plenty of times to catch it again if missed. I know I thought this way many times. If I missed it, oh well, I can watch it again about three times this week.
What I actually watched the most though was the monday night recap show. Sweet, to the point, all the action with none of the boring stuff, and on a night I was around. The best of all worlds.

If it is about commercials, viewership and promotion, I highly doubt that people would watch all ready reruns of "Racing Mercedes" or "Champions Forvever" more than same day WRC coverage.
These show are good, but for real??

If my boycott results in Speed dropping WRC, great. Maybe OLN or ESPN2 will grab it and post same day coverage using the original British audio track. That way it could be given better timeslot since they don't have to repurpose the audio, and all the Ralf haters would have to shaddap.
As for the timeslot - yes, 11pm on Friday and Saturday sucks. For me it means either cutting short my weekend night-time activities, staying home just for WRC (hard to convince the fiancee to do) or missing it (which it sounds like is the option a lot of people went for). I don't have a VCR, so recording isn't an option. The only reason the same-day coverage is given that timeslot is because it needs to be repurposed. This means extra time, and it means that Ralf has to take time off from his busy schedule to do the commentary which means more money for Speed to fork out. Personally, I'd prefer the original commentary but I understand that we're a nation of xenophobic ignoramusses (ignoramusi?) who won't watch something if the guy is "talkin' funny".

I really don't have a problem with the new time format, but let's be realistic, would you watch the superbowl next Sunday? If the new timeslot was say in the afternoon on the Sunday the weekend of the Rally that would be a hell of a lot better than having to wait a week to know who won. I will have checked the WRC website well before the show airs, which takes most the fun out of it. Also, they really should try and sign Nicky Grist, and drop Ralph, that would be excellent.

signed it! 1410 sigs so far. can only go up from there.

I obviously live in Nebraska, so I love football. But heck, I was watching "The Quick and the Dead- Champions Forever" sunday night.
Our local Impreza club is getting together to watch the coverage. I guess we can console eachother. The survey is really working well, I've been watching it since it had 150 sig's.
About the time. Yes I am a active member on WRC.com, but I still want to see the footage I'm listening too on Rally Radio. WRC is about intoxication of a drug called excitement. I must get drunk once a month on rally.

Here's something that I haven't read anywhere:
Why are all of us pushing Speed Channel only? Maybe we should be petitioning FIA/WRC instead? You may not know, but many sports broadcast on Sunday network TV, or on any cable channels, including ESPN, and especially ESPN2, are paid for by that sports, and not the other way around. If FIA/WRC really wants to build an audience and followers of WRC in the US, maybe they should pick up the bill and buy time for their rallies on the same day, prime time!

I repeat...

If it's a seamless, coherent two-hour show bereft of repetition, in a better time slot which makes it possible to WRC to become more popular, instead of this little inside secret for the anointed, I'm all for it.
The secret to longevity is popularity, hence, any move that can potentially make WRC more popular I'm all for. When you cut the junk and repetition from the 4 hours of coverage from each race last season, you get less than two hours of action, fyi.
Also, something interesting is that WRC is intruding, so to speak, into the NASCAR block. You know Speed Channel is serious about pushing this form of racing when that occurs. People carp about all of the NASCAR programming, yet when Speed Channel moves WRC from the difficult 10 p.m. slot to prime time, and NASCAR time, people complain about that.
The programmers at Speed Channel must be thinking that WRC fans are impossible to please.

I agree with you in principle. I want what is best for the sport, but I don't think this is it.
I think that Speed is correct in saying that American audiences want instant gratification. But I disagree with their conclusion that since they can't give it to us live, they're going to delay it for a week. I think a better solution is to stop repurposing the content, and air it in a better timeslot. Make it a half hour if they're having to stretch the content as much as they are.
Personally, I don't care if the 4 hours of content is compressable into 2 hours. You seem to keep forgetting that the new 2 hour show is going to contain commercials, so the actual coverage will most likely be nearer to 1 1/2 hours. At any rate, that's not the point. I want to be able to follow the WRC day by day. That's the only way that makes watching an event have any sort of tension in it.
Ultimately, the coverage we get is always going to be a poor substitute for being there. Nothing can match the excitement of seeing a day of racing (or hearing about the results, more like), and going to sleep thinking about what's going to happen the next day. Anything that Speed can do to maintain that excitement and tension in watching the coverage is going to make the experience better.
I think this is most comparable to events like the Tour de France. Certainly you'd hear fans of that race bitching if they don't get day to day coverage, and they wouldn't be happy with getting a single compressed version later. But at the same time, I'm sure you hear the same argument with the studio execs over that coverage as well.
Maybe we need to come to terms with the idea that WRC just doesn't make good television, and leave it at that. But a lot of people involved in the WRC having been trying to change that, and I can only view this as a step backwards.

I dunno Idjit, I think that WRC makes for great television. I recall having a Duke Video tape of the '95 season on at the office once, and everybody who saw it, got into it, admittedly from a "How in the heck do they do that," perspective. But there's nothing like flying cars to get someone's attention.
The same-day Tour coverage is boring as spit, and I'm a 22-year veteran bicycle racer. The problem with that coverage is that there's no middle ground between the recap packages offered by Famous Cycling Videos, and 3-4 hours of the day's stage on OLN.
If they were going to do same-day coverage, I would want to see a much better-edited version. I don't want to see them working on cars, I don't really care what the drivers think in between stages. I want as much action as I can get. The same-day stuff was coming up woefully short in that regard.
I'm not sure what the answer is, and I hope that Speed Channel figures it out. I do know that anything's better than what we used to get...an hour, a month or so after the event.
On the other hand, anything's better than nothing.

Remember they're not finished making it into the NASCAR channel. They need more room for the NASCAR, pets of the crew episodes. Shows like, what's the favorite chew amongst the drivers show.
Crap like that. I can't believe all teh sh_t they find to talk about when nothing's even going on.

Again, I think we agree for the most part. I think WRC makes great TV, I was referring to some articles I've read on the net that say the only thing that's given WRC wider acceptance is the proliferation of in-car footage. Not sure if I necessarily agree with that, I was playing devil's advocate for the most part.
On a personal level, I love the driver interviews and seeing the feats that the team technicians perform - so to each his own. Some of the coverage has done a great job of blending in-car footage with the helicopter and "corner" shots (with the single in-car co-driver audio track over all of it) - hopefully this trend will continue.
Your comment on the Tour points out the importance of balance in the coverage, and I agree. I think that the WRC coverage one-hour chunks are perfect. If it were at a more reasonable time, it just long enough to have the good stuff but short enough so that you can tell your loved ones "It's just an hour!".
Does anyone know the length of the programming as it airs in Britain? I think one of the reason you get the superfluous in-car footage is because the UK doesn't use the same 1/2 hour and hour chunks with the same ratio of commercials that Speed uses. So, it's not quite short enough to make it a half hour, but not quite long enough for an hour. My hunch is that this is why there's a higher ratio of commercials than for normal cable programming and they have to pad the content itself a bit to get it to fit the hour timeslot.

Good question about the UK coverage. I heard (I think I read it on ScoobyNet) that they don't get the 4 hours that we did last year. I wonder about the ultimate quality of the coverage, if that's true.
Do I have the only wife who watches WRC and F1 (except when we're tired, the engine sounds put us to sleep :D ) right alongside me?

If Speedvision hadn't become Speed Channel, you'd still be getting an hour-long wrapup show, a month or two after the event, if anything at all. You'd be getting worse F1 coverage, and you wouldn't be getting live F3000 races at all. British Touring Car action would be about the same, probably, but you'd be getting less German Touring Car, and no Japan or Australian racing series.
I was there when it was Speedvision. Speed Channel is better for the stuff that I want to see.
As far as it becoming the NASCAR channel, forget it---that won't happen, despite the protestations of people on this board. Speed Channel doesn't, and will never have enough clearance to warrant the live race coverage necessary for them to legitimately become the NASCAR channel, unless the series suffers a dramatic popularity dropoff that makes the list of networks vying to show it (Fox, Turners, CBS, NBC...) goes away completely.
But as long as they exist, Speed Channel becomes the little sister, with the lowest coverage and least amounts of money to throw at NASCAR.
Further, Speed Channel will never abandon its core audience, a demographic that is wealthier and more intelligent (hence their presumption that they will change channels when their preferred programming isn't on) and more faithful to a channel that looks out for their interests.
