Sti Clock Colour part 1

2cati 01-02-2004 08:31 AM

2004 Sti Clock Colour
Guys - Completed converting the HVAC controls, Stereo (Canadian car), ignition illumination ring to red.

This is the way it should have left the factory...A few small things left (i.e. Intercoller waterspray, door switches..etc).

Has anyone coverted the dash clock to RED or upgraded it to a red backlit LCD unit (like the STi dash) ?

Thanks!
Sith_Lord 01-03-2004 12:34 AM

I have an 02. Not sure if the clock is the same, but I also changed my dash colors. I had that damn clock apart and I can't see any way to change the color of it.

on this thread someone mentions changing the clock color and the method used.

anyone else tried this??

Probably a dumb question, but how did you change the color of the ignition ring? Did a search, but didn't find anything.
2cati 02-16-2004 07:23 AM

You remove the phillips scew under the steering wheel column and the lower cover should slide off - that will give you access to the "ring and bulb. I think the largher 0.2" lamp cover fit . The whole ring slide off the ignition giving you easy access to the bulb...very dramatic change ..I love it!!.

anyone get that clock color changed yet?
2cati 02-16-2004 09:37 PM

Thanks Tobey for the link - I reviewed the thread but unfortunately there is little evidence in that thread to indicate it actually has been successfully completed.

When I have time (in a few weeks) I'll remove the clock assembly but my initial impression it uses green "seven segment" LEDs or gas discharge - the filter (or the tinted panel where the "H", "M" & "S" buttons are located) may also be green - I can assure you there are no "lamp" condoms used as this clock does not have "back lighting" as the LCD based radio display or STi dash (odmeter/trip/temp).

I've given this conversion lower priority as I suspect in may involve more work.

I've been tempted to get the OEM auto dimming mirror but held back because of the - again "green" display - Maybe it can be modified - lol! when does it stop! I want everything RED -

If anyone has sucessfully changed the clock color - please let us know!

Thanks
Tobey 02-16-2004 10:08 PM

i pulled my clock out today to attempt a color change. i didn't find any leds or anything that would require simply changing bulb covers (as you said). the only thing i can think of is removing a type of film, howevere i can't find any such film. the lcd assembly looks to be epoxied together, i ain't goin in there!!

check this:

Cool - Thanks Tobey.

I'll have a look in a few weeks and if I come up with any ideas I'll let everyone know.

Did you have to remove the stereo unit to remove the clock or were you able to pry it off from the top?

i just removed the cup holder and the piece beside it, takes 2 seconds. the clips for that clock pod are a PAIN to pop out, they are rugged. it would be real easy to snap one or bend it so much that the plastic on the pod turns white, so i pushed up from underneath.

if you break a tab (i am guessing) that the pod will not sit flush, it would look like ass.

the picture above is from an sti, wonder if the 04 clock is different???

The OEM autodimming mirror is made by Donnelly. I have been told that the new ones have a blue display instead of green. Something to check out I guess.

I have a 04 STi - looks the same to me other than mine looking "more" green ....color may off in the photo above...

mmmm...Interesting..will have to check the new ones it out at the dealer...Thanks!

I think I would check some independant web sites that sell
Donnelly and ask them. If Subaru buys in bulk I have to guess they standardized to green.

Why not just go to a hobby shop, buy a rattle can of "Transparent Candy Apple Red" by Testors.

Spray a thin coat. Since the clock is black when non-illuminated, you wouldn't see the red unless you were really looking.

i think that would make an awful color when mixed with green lighting wouldn't it?

i am game for anything really, i just don't want green... or brown!
BAC5.2 02-19-2004 10:48 PM

ahh, in Tobey's picture, it looked white, not green. My bad.

You could always just replace the clock entirely. I'm sure an online robotics store sells red LCD clocks that'll fit in the space there.
silvscorp 02-19-2004 11:19 PM

chage the clock light is not simple, the led display itself is green, the only way to do it is to either add a red or orange filter infront of the green display or change to a red led clock
2cati 02-19-2004 11:47 PM

I promise to be sucessful!! When I have time ...sorry guys...

no in that picture it is white. it is from someones sti which makes me wonder if the clocks are different in the 04 models. the guy that posted the pic (of his car) doesn't know how the clock color changed, so i am baffled.

changing that green out (to me) looks like a pain in the ass (if it's even possible) for my car. i am thinking of trying a red film type idea behind the faceplate. maybe if there are enough red layers it will make the green go away... and it will probably be real dim!
silvscorp 02-20-2004 12:51 PM

i've changed everything in my car to red, cluster (pain in the ass to do, had to scratch all the green film off the back), radio, cruise control, foglight switch...etc. Clock and the rear auto dim mirror are the only things that has green lights on, kinda annoying. I've tried that like hafl year ago, seems to me the only way to get the clock to display red is to put a film, either red or orange. I tried to put a red fim over and I was able to see the display in somewhat red but kind of darkish red. I don't know if the orange filter can make the color brighter.

I remember reading some where about chaning the rear view mirror. I think the guy opened up the mirror assembly and changed the bulb or something.
2cati 02-20-2004 11:23 PM

Same here - I need that clock colour changed! Lol!

I finally posted some pics of my radio, HVAC & ignition key change to red (as well as other STi pics..).

I love the way it looks - this is the way the STi should have left the factory (clock included)

i just installed my sti cluster and did my interior too with the red bulb covers. that clock is pissing me off though! :furious:

i am going to try a red film type mod to that clock and see what happens. what can i use for a fery deep, red film?

anyone?
Silverwheels 02-21-2004 10:21 PM

I hate that damn cheap green clock display too - it's the wrong color, it's too dim and too small. Some bright day I'm gonna kill myself driving into a tree while I'm peering at the thing trying to tell the time.

The display (at least in my STi) is made up of green 7-segment led displays, and no filter is going to work very well, there's just not enough red light emitted to do any good. I can almost guarantee there is an exact equivalent display in red, but you might need to be handy with a soldering iron to replace it.

If I can ever get the time I'm going to replace the display with a bigger red one if a functional equivalent exists. Meantime, if someone can find a 12 volt red clock that fits in the pod let us know!

i agree, there has to be a very similar display out there somewhere, it would just need to be wired in.

so now, where do we look? does anyone know who exactly makes the wrx clock?

I have been buying a few different types of used Honda clocks with a red display. I am going to try to incorperate them into the bezel to see if I can make it look stock.
I also found this at JCWhitney. It actually fits very well. Unfortunatley it is just not bright enough in the day time.

2cati 03-12-2004 07:28 AM

I've completed my audio items and this is my next item to tackle.

Guys - while I had the head unit out, I tried to pop that clock housing off (two tabs near the ducts under the dash) but it did not budge.

How many "tabs" are there unders the dash and which ones are ket to removing the clock?

Thanks!!
brunetmj 03-15-2004 12:55 PM

4 tabs. Two in front and two in the back. I usually start with the rear ones on one corner until it pops. Then i go after the 2nd rear one. Just pull real hard you woun't hurt anything.
Extraze 03-21-2004 03:24 PM

just a little peice of information that seems to be false in here.

the clock is NOT green, its is a white-blueish color... what is turning the clock green is the filter in front (where the S, M and H) are... if someone knows how to mold plastic, (RED PLASTIC) and punch 3 holes in them (print S, M and H on it if possible) that person would make alot of money by selling these things ! :)
brunetmj 03-22-2004 01:11 PM

I have been experimenting using clocks from other model cars and inserting them into the existing bezel. This is a clock from a Honda civic which has a white display. They have a red plastic
internal sheet of plastic. I took two apart and added a layer of red plastic into another. Once i find something I am satisfied with I would then modify the back of the clock bezel to fit the clock.
It is not very bright during the day (but still viewable) and easily read at night. I have a couple of other clocks from other cars on the way and I am still experimenting.

It sure looks to be a light shade of green to me. Even with the smoked plexiglass off.

Yeah, I've taken out the hole assembly before. It looks like the green LED with smoked plastic cover.

How about waiting for the red on red defi bf guages and putting them where the clock goes? That's what i'm planning on doing!

I thought these coloring mods on the bulbs all failed in time. I thought the color bleached out and everything goes back to green in time... what method are you guys using to change the color?
Extraze 04-23-2004 06:59 AM

just paint all the blubs with hight heat paint ...

everything looks perfect on mine ... and its been close to 6-7 months now
baltik 04-23-2004 10:01 AM

Well,
If all else fails, just get the gauge pod and put in this analog clock along with the matching boost and egt. The red is a perfect match.

not the cheapest solution but you should have a boost gauge anyway.

I took a peice of lighting Gel from my roomates theatre, and doubled it up in front of the clock. during hte day it looks black (i dont care cause i use my stereo clock) and at night its a nice red. I'll try to remember to take photos soon, but its really simple.

brunetmj 05-11-2004 05:15 PM

Thanks. Below is a link from where I got the clock. Blue display with black cover. I posted the info before but I cant find it so forgive me for repeating.

I bought a used clock bezel, removed all the plastic clock retaining plastic on the back. I them used a dremmel to enlarge the inside edge of the clock opening (it doesn't require a whole lot cutting). I then glued the clock in using silicone adhesive and a few pieces of supporting plastic.

http://www.dakotadigital.com/Detail.cfm/-/Category=140/PartNumber=ODY-16-1/product.htm

and here is the clock outside of the car
