You could probably grind it down into whatever shape you want, then aim the beams slightly lower.
Otherwise I have seen these types of shields custom fabricated out of a aluminum soda can.

I wonder...
What would happen if you just took that plate out altogether? It'd be a little brighter up high but with non hid would it really matter?

HID or not, the function of the plate in a projector type light unit is to prevent light from being transmitted onto undesirable directions. For example, if the plate had a simple straight edge like ones in Hella optilux projector lights (as opposed to the one in this STi light), and the plate were to be placed to cover the lower half of the projector lens, then it would prevent reflected light (from the reflector behind the bulb) to strike upwards. It's easier to explain this with a picture, but unfortunately I couldn't find one.
In short, removing the plate would make the light unit transmit light in just about any direction, which:
(1) would blind others
(2) may reduce the amount of light that could have been directed correctly (since some are scattered all over).
Not a good thing unless blinding others is the objective. Imho, this would also render the light unit completely useless in fog, as the whole area in front of you will glow.

Someone try this with a set of the JDM STi headlights.

I'm gonna try to get it done today.
However, the car is in the shop, so I won't know for a couple weeks how well it works.
Also, I don't have a digital cam, so you'll have to wait till I get the pics developed the old fasioned way

Already been done: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=2421
The plate which produces the cutoff is curved in the STI headlights, unlike those Hella units linked above.
