STI SCC flat black paint job

did anyone see the STI in the latest Sport Compact Car?? i've been interested in something that looks like that for a long while now, and very interested in how well something like this will hold up. it looks like all they used was a matte black spray paint, with no clear coat or anything... the bottles said "rust lock" or something like that on them.... maybe they won't have to worry too much about rain or whatever being in california, and it being a project car. any comments/info would be appreciated
thanks

Umm, That looks like silver? The one he's talking about is all black. I don't know if I would spray paint it, I'd rather buy some flat black and shoot it. Some say it looks good, some say it looks like booty. I think it looks OK, but I wouldn't want to do it.

what about a clear coat or what not?? would you still do one?
oh, and i've seen that prodrive car... it's cool, but still a a bit of a "lust" to it...

No, you don't clear a flat color unless you want it to be glossy. The paint that was already there will sufice to seal out the elements. If you have a crappy job to begin with then take care of protecting the metal before you coat the car with a flat color.
| senomar | 10-01-2004 02:33 PM |
are you saying that one should just spray the flat paint over the existing (in my case stock) paint job?? i think on the SCC car, they at least sanded it down...

The bastards at SCC RATTLE CANNED   the damned car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
| senomar | 10-01-2004 03:30 PM |
i know.... so? besides being really cheap, what's wrong with that?
| Jon Bogert | 10-01-2004 03:51 PM |
John Deere Blitz Black, professionally applied, looks amazing. It's not quite flat, but definitely not glossy. Probably a lot tougher than the factory paint, too.
| Buckeye Kid | 10-01-2004 03:59 PM |
I can't believe what those guys at SCC do to the vehicles they get sometime. They apply a 'ghetto' paint job to a 33k car. A flat black paint job may look good if you mod the crap out of an 89 Supra, but to wreck a brand new paint job like that.... I feel they have been sabotaging the STi since they bought it. Praxis AIR SUSPENSION for god's sake! The SCC guys are all pro-EVO.
I would like car mags to simply do what we cannot to a vehicle, since they have a combination of unlimited money and great hook-ups from the best aftermarket companies out there. To rattle-can a paint job and install luxury-car suspension on a sport compact car, well I could have done that.

They got rid of the Praxis and have HKS coilovers. I think it looks good, considering all the blue Subaru's out there. it crossed my mind after someone keyed my car. besides, don't hate on the Evo as its not a bad car and has certain advantages over the STI.
| senomar | 10-02-2004 11:17 AM |
good point buckeye... i still think it looks sweet, and would like to have the confidence to take the plunge on my own car..
| chadly7 | 10-02-2004 11:53 AM |
I was horrified at the thought of flat black spray on the wingless beast, until I saw pictures. Call me old school, but the idea of a sleeper (now that they got rid of the Praxis) is pretty sweet. On the topic: a buddy did a spray job to an older camaro, and while it looked awesome, it quickly chipped and cracked in the harsh michigan weather. I'd imagine california is a little more tolerable.
| DieselClown | 10-02-2004 12:02 PM |
i think they f'ed it up royally with the flat black.
| needsboost2005 | 10-02-2004 05:53 PM |
I remember that they took teh wing off and Spray painted the car !
| Nick M | 10-02-2004 07:15 PM |
A friend of mine saw the car in person, said it looks horrible, professional photography hides the million imperfections using a spray paint can created.

what about flat black is "sleeper"?
every damned sport-compact tuner wanna-be has their car "primered" in flat black but lacks the funds to get a quality paint job. i see a flat black car and figure they at least have an enormous exhaust, probably a crappy cold air intake, and probably a couple other toys, maybe many more. but to be honest, the whole idea of the flat black paint job is to state "I've already spent all my money on go-fast-bits, and now I'm saving for the looks to go with the demeanor."
I agree with those who think that the flat black paint on the STi was a Crap idea.

I believe flat black used to be a thing for domestics...it symbolized your car was badass...but you had to find out the hard way. As for the wannabes that lack funds...it might be because its a quick solution to getting a one color car. :P I lack funds right now and debating on paint it flat black....I actually would use Rustoleum(sp?) primer since it sticks really well without sanding and can be remove with alot of acrylic laquer.
BTW...I don't have a WRX....or a Subaru at all.
How did Prodrive get there car like that?

Prodrive probably started with the shell of a car and just painted it a beautiful satin silver. They have all the luck. ;)

won't piss me off.... i think if it's done well (the debate is still out on the the SCC car) it can be cool. i think the challenge is doing it well, and not making it look like a $15 paint job. and it doesn't really seem like anyone's come up with a quality solution besides the Prodrive guys, and even the info on that car seems to be lacking (as far as which paint, clear coat or not, etc).... anyway, as they say... to each their own guys... thanks for the comments

i don't know i still don't think that flat black looks the part on an import. Flat black started with the muscle cars and i think it should stay there. as for the spraypaint... they could have just gone to maaco and got the same deal... and saved themselves a day

After seeing the Prodrive car, my 240's paintjob is pretty well decided, so thanks for posting it! We'll be stripping the car down to a shell and building it up as my ultimate dream car, 240 fastback with a T78 RB26, yay. My Impreza is prepared to be winter car, it might get a little spray job too, I'm sick of the green... :( So, I just wanted to mention that. I don't really like the SCC STi, and hearing that it looks like crap in person makes sense, photos are amazing at making **** look like gold.
Oh, and I've heard of a guy who rubberized his 240 fastback, top that

| senomar | 10-03-2004 06:47 PM |
i think the main advantage to the flat paint (and now rubberizing) is the radar absorbing properties....;)
| projectrally | 10-04-2004 08:33 PM |
Eh, rattle-canning has its place. Prodrive's car looks damn good rattle-canned. The SCC car looks okay in the ONE photo we got of it finished. Only time and daylight will decide that one, though. As for the rattle-canning, I think it's best employed when you have an old car that's got really bad paint, miscolored body parts from various cars, or a combination of both.
OR if you're trying to create a sleeper, cause it gets mad stealth points.

Ok the rattle can method is the cheap "I don't have a buddy with a paint booth" method. If you have it done by a prefessional flat black cars are fricking awesome. There is guy around here that has a wide body supra, with about 40,000 in upgrades ( car dynoed at 800whp) anyway, it is flat black, with blacked out taillights, and looks fricking amazing. There is something tough about flat black cars.. I don't know if anyone has ever seen the Sylvester Stallone movie "Cobra" That is about as flat as I would want to ever go, but in my opinion.... tough.
| eastcoastbumps | 11-08-2004 11:39 PM |
I think it looks bad ass. Would I ever do it? Nope, not to my WRX. I wouldn't even do it to my beater.
| AlbanianImpreza | 11-09-2004 12:04 AM |
flat black on a new STi i dont know, but Flat Black on the Gc8s with complete brushed aluminum rims flat black painted exhaust dropped, with slicks....very nice...but thats just me
| Blue Rabbit 02 | 11-09-2004 12:12 AM |
if i ever get that project 240 goin, itll prolly be flat black, at least the interior will be
| mw1029h | 11-09-2004 12:57 AM |
 Well,if any real Sti owner paints his or her car with cans of spray paint they should be placed under a 72hr psychiatric hold and their car should be impounded until they regain the senses. Those bone heads at SCC are nothing more the EVO slaps, that EVO can do nothing wrong in their eyes and Subaru continue to provide those A holes with cars to distroy and degrade. You never see those punks screwing the EVO. I wished I had caught them I would have had them arrested for vandalism freak'n jerks.

 I thought about doing this when I got pissed from all the door dings I was getting. I wouldn't do it to a nice car, but I would have considered it for a beater. The main reason I shot it down wasn't looks, but weight. I thought it would make the car heavy. I never would have went through w/ it anyways, but I still kinda like the idea. :alien:

| HolyCrikey | 11-09-2004 02:26 AM |
My friend did it on his '85 corolla gt-s simply cause it's a beater. I think it should be kept at that. Why do a high dollar car like an STI in crap paint? Just doesn't make sense. I always believed the flat black was simply a way to make the car look decent without giving a crap about dents/dings/wear and tear. Too bad the fad picked up to other, higher priced cars. I certainly wouldn't show off my flat-black car as if it were special :) (my .02)
| Raslian | 11-09-2004 03:51 AM |
I believe the finish acheived on the prodrive car comes from the clearcoat, and not the paint itself. I thought I remember that they sprayed the paint just like normal, but topped it with a satin clearcoat, instead of one that provides an ultra high shine.

If you go flat black like the SCC STI or any number of 50's t-buckets and Mercs, check out the duplicolor can paints. The nozzle is adjustable like a real paint gun, and you can get a handle for about $5. You'll avoid the running and uneven problems that plagues the SCC guys.
I suggest that after the alcohol/mineral spirits/sanding, a light coat of black self etching primer.
The flat paint wil be a pain when a bird ****s on it, or you have oil/tar to clean up. The paint will wear off or shine when rubbed with bug and tar remover and many automotive cleaners. God forbid you get armor all on it. I'm not sure if a coat or two of satin or flat clear coat will help, or what it would look like.
No Fear. Get er done, and post photos.
I would never do it to my daily driver. My lotus replicar--maybe..

well when you car gets keyed, has it's clear eaten away from bird $hit, and inconsiderate people that ding your car, i think flat black is cheap alternative to a +2k paint job. I agree with Bonjo2 that it will be difficult to maintain an even finish, but rarely is that case for a rattle can job anyways.

Boy, I haven't seen this thread in a while. On a similar subject I'm planning on re-painting my car satin dark blue similar in color to the blue ridge pearl but a semi-flat or satin finish (possibly even a few shades lighter) pretty soon since the previous owner watched TF&TF too many times and gave it the ricer paintjob from hell.
