STi Wing FAQ part 2

I'm keeping the wing. It is one of the items that set the STi apart from other posers.

Would you remove the wing from a Porsche GT2 or GT3 even though it is your daily driver?

I don't think so.;)
Hell no I wouldnt take it off of a Porsche-it actually looks nice. But this is a subaru and I think the wing is kinda nasty. To each his own though!

Took the wing off of my 05. Love it without.

I went by a motorcycle cop friday doing 70ish in a 45 (everyone in town speeds there-it's basically a 4 lane interstate). He very obviously was clocking me going by and went back to watching others. (I took it off more for cosmetic reasons, but hey being stealth is cool too)

The car just looks like your average sedan to me now...which is fine with me. I doubt 1/100 people would know what my car is, wing or no wing. I'll ditch the hood scoop (FMIC) when I can afford to blow the cash.

I like mine without. I don't race. I kept my lid/wing in case I do someday. Those of you that love the wing and dont race can say hi to Vin Diesel for me :P No really, I'm glad you like your car. It rocks with or without.

The wing sucks...because I can't check out the hottie in the SUV behind me anymore. It chops them off about 90% of the time

Step 1 - look at wing, note wing is not very wing shaped. More oval shaped than airfoil shaped (and with no significant angle of attack, see typical racecar - major airfoil [curved] shape & high angle of attack).

Step 2 - drive car at high speed, note how "wing" vibrates. How would soft material wing transfer significant downforce?

Step 3 - look at lower wing section, note duck-tail spoiler shape. Used to produce downforce in many cars.

Step 4 - drive two totally different vehicles with totally different suspension setups, determine that one with big "wing" is more stable at high speed.

Question - is high speed stability fuction of A) suspension setup, B) lower spoiler section, C) wing, D) psychology/placebo effect, or E) all of the above.

I think E, with benefit of wing section being fairly limited.

Note: for all the "Subaru wouldn't put the wing on if it wasn't fuctional" guys, 90% of all production car wings/spoilers have no areodynamic function. Its all marketing, someone paying an extra $5-8K for an STi usually doesn't want one that looks just like a much cheaper WRX. See all the "don't take off the wing it won't be a real STi/won't look right" comments.

heh.... posers such as...? other subarus who put the wing on? or just the wrx? a guy in my area put an lanevo8 cf wing on his rsx, looks pretty good actually.....

devils advocate...did you know the wing on another impreza is still fair game? the same wing can be found on the wrx NB-R in japan as well as the v-limited std version of the wrx? (of course i was reffering this to the general public, not just powerslide23) :D

to wing or not to wing, whatever floats peoples boat is also fair game, i happen to like it myself, maybe because of its wrc roots... who knows.....

In order to homologate the WRX STi for racing (in its class) it has to be sold to the general public with the features it will be raced with. If it didn't have a wing, it couldn't race with one...

Go to Bonneville and check out the cars going 150-300, guess what is on the back of the car/truck.... a big wing, not there for looks. Our Salt Flats car only does 160 and even at that speed the ass wants to slide out evne in a straight line. IMO at high speeds the STI wing is fuctional, go drive the car 140+, it's not the only thing keeping me planted but it works with what else is there.

As far as keeping it or taking it off I look at it this way, it's your car do what you want with it. As long as you are making the payment you can paint it titty pink. I personally have two trunks, one with and one with out.
stripperluva 05-05-2005 09:15 AM

I would like to see a pic of an STI trunk after the wing was removed but before the holes were filled. that way I can see how big of a pain in the @ss removing it would be as far as filling holes. Odds are I would get tired of the wingless after a while so I am kind of curios as to whether or not body color painter plastic plugs would look like TOTAL ass while I decided if the wing belongs or not.

I.E. I am too lazy to remove my own wing to check this out.

Anyhow, I understand what you're getting at, but is there really a form of racing the STI was built for? It comes with street tires, a non-adjustable suspension, ordinary seatbelts, etc. It's not a race car. It's really easy to make it into one, but I would suggest that right off the lot, it's meant for boulevard cruising as much as an M3..
I like the FAQ minus that part. The STi is designed to be a street performance car. If it was purely a race car it would have racing tires, roll cage, no back seat cushions, racing seat belts, etc. It is really designed along the lines of other street performance cars such as the M3.
Has anyone taken one of these sti wings apart, benefits aside,I was wodering if you could just take off the top section and fabricate some caps or some tipe of fins, for a quick change option?
i've seen caps that go on the bottom section, i think i saw it on an STi in Drive
N1te 11-03-2005 11:04 AM
