WRC Rally Japan <---talk about it here part 1

WRC Rally Japan <---talk about it here
I know it's still a week away, but I am tired of talking about Petter crashing, so.....

 w00t! Go Subaru!!! w00t!

New event = good for the young guys (Mikko, are you listening?!?!)
The only problem I see is that Seb Loeb did the recce last year so he does have a bit of an advantage. But it should be wet and dirty so SWRT should be fine!
WRXinWhite 08-26-2004 09:27 PM

Judging by the Entry List it is going to be a Mitsubishi Festival. Hope Subaru will have a nice run at home... :p
Lightning Jack 08-26-2004 09:58 PM

never know.. anything can happen...
yes i want to see Solberg finishes
stiski 08-26-2004 11:08 PM

There are only 9 WRC cars entered. What a joke!! There could potentially be a group N car in the top five.

Marcus
WRXedUSA 08-27-2004 12:02 AM

My money is on Marcus.
Kuro 08-27-2004 06:21 AM

Bah...too many stages and not enough entrants. It should be the other way around. :(
akuhner 08-27-2004 09:44 AM

I do think that the teams should be protesting the expanded calendar if they are going to have all the "cost cutting" measures forced on them. It's stupid logic to say that they are spending too much, then expand the calendar. Using a few less tires, and not paying for a gravel crew will probably barely make up for the expanded calendar (not that I know anything about WRC budgets!). Anyway, I hope they keep it for next year, and get more entrants, because I want to go back to Japan to visit and see the rally!

Any bets on Toshi Arai doing well? It's his home turf, and he won it last year. I would also expect to see more than a few totally random Japanese names up there when they show the full standings down to 16th.

Check out the rally guide on their site, some interesting stuff there:
http://www.rallyjapan.jp/e/
It looks to me like they have 3 super special stages on each leg of the rally! And it's pretty compact, just on the outskirts of the host city.

Alex
DrBiggly 08-27-2004 11:07 AM

Should be an interesting event. :)
dwx 08-27-2004 02:25 PM

I think the home guys will do pretty well in the rally. I think Solberg, Loeb, and Martin will be ahead of the others though.

I looked at the calendar recently, they have way too many events. They are running 16 events this year, I think 12 events is enough to run in one year. Have a set number of events that are run every year, and then rotate some around.
WRXMaster 08-27-2004 04:53 PM

While watching wrc mexico......... talked to some guy driving a wrc focus for the the whole wrc championship. He said it cost about 2 mil to run a old wrc car in the whole championship.
WRXedUSA 08-27-2004 07:28 PM

Warmbold or Villamaki?
WRXMaster 08-27-2004 08:13 PM

Warmbold--- German --- he had a female co driver
squeech 08-29-2004 03:19 AM

I, too, would simply like to see Petter finish and put this little rut behind him. I'm not expecting him to score very high though.

I would also expect to see a lot of Japanses names on the leaderboard. I think this rally is going to very much mirror what we expect from Finland every year..."If you're not finnish, you don't do well at all in Finland." That's why Marcus always wins that one
kotaro 08-29-2004 04:21 AM

Although loeb did the recce last year, subaru has been racing this rally for who knows how many years with Gr.N cars (yes some stages are new but not all of them...right?)...probably at least one of those teams will be able to give swrt some helpful info...their pacenotes and setup data could be analysed by swrt and come up with a fairly competitive setup for the WRCars? Methinks (or mehopes actually :D) subaru might have a better base setup for this rally than other teams.

Hopefully petter will win this one...
stiski 08-29-2004 11:10 PM

Is Phil 100% back?
WRCar 08-30-2004 04:16 PM

Benami:
It sounds like Phil is more gung-ho about getting back into it than Petter.
Check out the story on www.wrc.com . Petter says he is going to ease back into it while Phil seems ready to go.

So everyone start doing your bi-weekly rain dance and let's try to help our boys out!

Solberg leads a close battle
Japan : SS 4 - 2.80 km [03/09/04 - 03:51]

Another stage victory for Petter Solberg, his third since the start of Rally Japan. The short Rikubetsu stage was a close battle between the first two drivers, Marcus Gronholm finishing only six tenths behind the Subaru driver.
Carlos Sainz is third in SS 4 and closes in on Markko Martin who is fourth in the general standings. The gap between the two drivers is 1"2.
Sebastien Loeb sets the fourth best time in this last stage of the morning. Despite losing only two seconds on Gronholm, Loeb slips back to third place in the overall results while Gronholm climbs up to second position!
Markko Martin and Francois Duval are fifth and sixth respectively, followed by Harri Rovanpera in seventh place. The Peugeot driver managed to set a faster time than Mikko Hirvonen in eighth position, despite having lost his fourth gear on his 307 WRC.
Toshi Arai is the Group N leader. The Japanese star is followed by Fumio Nutahara in second position, 18"9 seconds behind him in the general standings.

Hirvonen went out of the rally, as he had hydraulic problems and he couldn't get out of fifth gear. He wasn't able to start stage 24. Good to see a 1/2/3 in GroupN still. Only two more stages to go.

Some interesting facts:

Mikko Hirvonen has been allowed to continue despite being unable to finish the Super Special earlier today. The Finn took advantage of a rule that stipulates that a driver can continue if his car fails during a Super Special. The Subaru driver received a calculated time equal to the fastest runner plus three minutes in the Super Special, then his Impreza was repaired at the service park. Mikko is seventh in SS 25.

I'm very glad Subaru did well. They needed this a lot.
